With the vast number of cancer diagnoses each year, it is crucial that comprehensive oncology treatment provides the best possible treatment for all patients. In addition to traditional palliative care, understanding of patients’ religious beliefs and practices is an integral piece to providing overall comfort and personalized, integrative care. Multi-segment biomechanical foot models are commonly used to track foot kinematics during motion analysis, but due to the complexity of foot mechanics there is a lack of technical uniformity in existing foot models. Two of the most commonly used multi-segment models are the Oxford and Leardini foot models. The purpose of this study was to compare selected foot kinematics collected using these models. While many studies have examined the relationship between stress and dementia, there is no general consensus on what the relationship is, or even whether such a relationship exists at all (Fountoulakis, 2011; Wang, 2012). This literature review consequently considers a broad range of hypotheses on the topic. The central focus of this review was to identify what aspects of stress – throughout life – increase the likelihood of dementia in the elderly. Prevalence Of Synesthesia In College Students, Sara Niester

Synesthesia is a rare neurological phenomena that when triggered causes two senses to be presented simultaneously, usually occurring because the senses are abnormally linked. We studied the prevalence of grapheme to color synesthesia in college students, and found a prevalence of 4.2% among test subjects, higher then the previously estimated prevalence of the condition. We estimated prevalence in college students using three different styles of testing. Two tests to produce a consistency score for graphemes, a memory test as a latency period between the consistency tests, and a survey that participants rated themselves on their synesthetic perceptions.

There has been an ongoing debate over women’s impact on corporations, specifically in top executive roles. This study looks at the stock price reaction to the appointment of the first female to the board of directors of Fortune 250 companies. Using the Fama-French three factor model we observed the abnormal stock price reaction that occurred when a company announced the first woman being appointed. Analysis revealed that although the initial stock price reaction was zero, the post-five year returns were statistically significantly positive. This is the first study to show that having a woman on a firm’s board of directors …

Firefighters require a high level of physical fitness in order to meet the demands of their profession. While physical fitness testing is required to join the department, firefighters are not subject to further formal exercise testing throughout the duration of their careers. Active, career firefighters were tested on a variety of physical fitness measures related to body composition, strength, power, and endurance over three testing sessions. 49 firefighters (40.5 ± 8.3 yr, 89.5 ± 13.0 kg, 27.8 ± 3.6 kg/m2) were found to have a resting heart rate of 57.7 ± 8.2 bpm, blood pressure of 121.5 ± 11.9/71.5 ± …

Police services are responding to the current realities of diversity. Specifically, police services attempt to adopt diversity policies, initiatives, and practices as a way to reflect community representation. The present study examines how minority police officers’ perceive and experience organizational diversity. While diversity is a broad term encompassing such variables as race, sex and sexual orientation, the present study focuses primarily on racial diversity. Through in-depth interviews with 12 Canadian police officers and 1 diversity trainer, as well as descriptive statistical data pertaining to the last 15 years of recruitment trends, the perceptions held by participants suggest that police services …

This dissertation studies two different techniques for analyzing control systems whose dynamics include impulses, or more specifically, are measure-driven. In such systems, the state trajectories will have discontinuities corresponding to the atoms of the Borel measure driving the dynamics, and these discontinuities require further definition in order for the control system to be treated with the broad range of results available to non-impulsive systems. Both techniques considered involve a reparameterization of the system variables including state, time, and controls. Burkholderia glumae is the major causal agent of bacterial panicle blight of rice, a disease that can cause significant yield losses. This bacterial pathogen produces a number of virulence factors that contribute to disease development. The phytotoxin, toxoflavin is required for full virulence and is the most important virulence factor in B. glumae. The known regulatory cascade of toxoflavin production involves the TofI-TofR quorum-sensing system, the transcriptional activators ToxJ and ToxR, and the toxoflavin biosynthesis and transport genes. Transposon mutagenesis of toxoflavin-producing B. glumae strains generated a number of mutants with increased toxoflavin production. Several of these mutants contained …

Historical studies on higher education often utilize traditional historical methods. This practice has produced a body of literature, both historical and contemporary, which has a particular focus on (a) the histories and mythologies of institutions, (b) the individuals who function within the system at the administrative or student levels, and (c) the individuals who have been excluded from the system. The explosive growth in access to the Internet has led to a commensurate increase in the availability, anonymity, andaffordabilityofpornography.Anemergingbodyofresearch has shown associations between pornography and certain behaviors and attitudes; yet, how pornography actually influences these outcomes has not been documented. In two studies (Study 1N=969; Study 2N=992) we examined the hypothesis that pornography influences potentially risky sexual behavior (hooking up) among emerging adults via sexual scripts. Our results demonstrate that more frequent viewing of pornography is associated with a higher incidence of hooking up and a higher number of unique hook up partners. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an online training program designed for part-time undergraduate Desk Assistants (DAs) employed by Louisiana State University’s (LSU) department of Residence Education. The evaluation of the training program included a comparison of video and lecture versions of a training program with comparable content to determine the effectiveness across a set of four outcomes: motivation during training, motivation after training, satisfaction, and learning. Plantations are one of the long-standing symbols of the U.S. South. Today, almost four hundred former plantation sites are museums. Over the last fifteen years a sustained, critical consideration of how slavery is remembered at these sites has developed in the academic literature. Distracted driving continues to remain a cause of concern for a number of bodies, including government agencies, traffic safety advocacy groups and law enforcement agencies, because of its traffic safety risks. The driving simulator continues to be popular with researchers in collecting data on performance variables that provide scientific knowledge of the effects of distracted driving. Several of these performance variables can be used to quantify a single distracting effect, resulting in a multivariate dataset. Latent infection with the apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) has been associated with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and self-harm behaviour. However, the potential relationship between T. gondii immunoglobulin G antibody (IgG) seropositivity and generalised-anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) has not been investigated. The associations between serum reactivity to T. gondii and major depressive disorder (MDD), GAD and PD were evaluated in a total sample of 1 846 adult participants between the ages of 20 and 39 years from the United States Center for Disease Control's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
