Reevaluation Of The Aapm Tg-43 Brachytherapy Dosimetry Parameters For An 125I Seed, And The Influence Of Eye Plaque Design On Dose Distributions And Dose-Volume Histograms, Prakash Aryal

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

The TG-43 dosimetry parameters of the AdvantageTM 125I model IAI-125A brachytherapy seed were studied. An investigation using modern MCNP radiation transport code with updated cross-section libraries was performed. Twelve different simulation conditions were studied for a single seed by varying the coating thickness, mass density, photon energy spectrum and cross-section library. The dose rate was found to be 6.3% lower at 1 cm in comparison to published results. New TG-43 dosimetry parameters are proposed.

The dose distribution for a brachytherapy eye plaque, model EP917, was investigated, including the effects of collimation from high-Z slots. Dose distributions for …

Magneto-Optical Effects And Precision Measurement Physics: Accessing The Magnetic Faraday Effect Of Polarized 3He With A Triple Modulation Technique, Gretchen Phelps Jan 2014

Magneto-Optical Effects And Precision Measurement Physics: Accessing The Magnetic Faraday Effect Of Polarized 3He With A Triple Modulation Technique, Gretchen Phelps

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

This work is comprised of the study of two magneto-optical phenomena: the Kerr effect and the Faraday effect. Neutron physics experiments often utilize polarized neutrons, and one method to generate or guide polarized neutrons involves the use of a system of magnetic super-mirrors. Experience shows that the magnetization of the super-mirror may decay with time; therefore, we implemented the surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE) to study the temporal behavior of the magnetization of a magnetized remnant super-mirror sample, where a sensitivity of 0.1 mrad was obtained. Unique to our set-up was the method in which the various magnetization directions were …

The Dijet Cross Section Measurement In Proton-Proton Collisions At A Center Of Mass Energy Of 500 Gev At Star, Grant D. Webb Jan 2014

The Dijet Cross Section Measurement In Proton-Proton Collisions At A Center Of Mass Energy Of 500 Gev At Star, Grant D. Webb

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Polarized deep inelastic scattering experiments play a vital role in the exploration of the spin structure of the proton. The polarized proton-proton collider at RHIC provides direct access to the gluon spin distribution through longitudinal double spin asymmetry measurements of inclusive jets, pions, and dijets. This thesis presents the measurement of the dijet double differential cross-section in proton-proton collisions at center of mass energies of √s = 500 GeV. The data represent an integrated luminosity of 8.7 pb-1 recorded by the STAR detector during the 2009 RHIC run. A comprehensive jet analysis was performed to determine the ideal …

Time Dependent Holography, Diptarka Das Jan 2014

Time Dependent Holography, Diptarka Das

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

One of the most important results emerging from string theory is the gauge gravity duality (AdS/CFT correspondence) which tells us that certain problems in particular gravitational backgrounds can be exactly mapped to a particular dual gauge theory a quantum theory very similar to the one explaining the interactions between fundamental subatomic particles. The chief merit of the duality is that a difficult problem in one theory can be mapped to a simpler and solvable problem in the other theory. The duality can be used both ways.

Most of the current theoretical framework is suited to study equilibrium systems, or …

Nuclear Structure Relevant To Double-Beta Decay: Studies Of ⁷⁶Ge And ⁷⁶Se Using Inelastic Neutron Scattering, Benjamin P. Crider Jan 2014

Nuclear Structure Relevant To Double-Beta Decay: Studies Of ⁷⁶Ge And ⁷⁶Se Using Inelastic Neutron Scattering, Benjamin P. Crider

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

While neutrino oscillations indicate that neutrino flavors mix and that neutrinos have mass, they do not supply information on the absolute mass scale of the three flavors of neutrinos. Currently, the only viable way to determine this mass scale is through the observation of the theoretically predicted process of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ). This yet-to-be-observed decay process is speculated to occur in a handful of nuclei and has predicted half-lives greater than 10²⁵ years. Observation of 0νββ is the goal of several large-scale, multinational efforts and consists of detecting a sharp peak in the summed β energies at the Q-value …

A New Set Of Spectroscopic Metallicity Calibrations For Rr Lyrae Variable Stars, Eckhart Spalding Jan 2014

A New Set Of Spectroscopic Metallicity Calibrations For Rr Lyrae Variable Stars, Eckhart Spalding

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

RR Lyrae stars are old, iron-poor, Helium-burning variable stars. RR Lyraes are extremely useful for tracing phase-space structures and metallicities within the galaxy because they are easy to identify, have consistent luminosities, and are found in large numbers in the galactic disk, bulge, and halo. Here we present a new set of spectroscopic metallicity calibrations that use the equivalent widths of the Ca II K, Hγ, and Hδ lines to calculate metallicity values. Applied to spectroscopic survey data, these calibrations will help shed light on the evolution of the Milky Way and other galaxies.

A Study Of Periodic And Aperiodic Ferromagnetic Antidot Lattices, Vinayak S. Bhat Jan 2014

A Study Of Periodic And Aperiodic Ferromagnetic Antidot Lattices, Vinayak S. Bhat

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

This thesis reports our study of the effect of domain wall pinning by ferromagnetic (FM) metamaterials [1] in the form of periodic antidot lattices (ADL) on spin wave spectra in the reversible regime. This study was then extended to artificial quasicrystals in the form of Penrose P2 tilings (P2T). Our DC magnetization study of these metamaterials showed reproducible and temperature dependent knee anomalies in the hysteretic regime that are due to the isolated switching of the FM segments. Our dumbbell model analysis [2] of simulated magnetization maps indicates that FM switching in P2T is nonstochastic. We have also acquired …

Analysis Of Herbicide Treatment Effectiveness On Common Reed (Phragmites Australis) Of Delaware Bay Salt Marshes, Laura Rosa Ruggeri

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Management of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., or common reed, an invasive species within the Delaware Bay, U.S. has been ongoing since 1994 as part of the Estuary Enhancement Program (EEP) for Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG). Phragmites is known to alter the habitat by creating a monoculture, increasing sediment trapping, and decreasing water circulation resulting in decreased biodiversity. Herbicide treatment at EEP Phragmites-dominated sites began as a means to mitigate for loss of nekton species resulting from operations of the Hope Creek-Salem Generating Station once-through cooling system. Using ArcGIS, effectiveness of herbicide treatment was compared at two of …

Nursing Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: The high mortality and morbidity rates associated with heart failure are still not well explained. A few psychosocial factors have been studied and explain some of this risk, but other factors, like stress, remain largely unexplored in heart failure. This study aimed to (1) examine the association of stress with 6-month cardiac event-free survival, (2) examine the relationship of stress with salivary cortisol, and (3) examine the association of salivary cortisol level with 6-month cardiac event-free survival.

METHOD: A total of 81 heart failure patients participated. Stress was measured using the brief Perceived Stress Scale. Cortisol was …

Resilience To Discrimination Stress Across Ethnic Identity Stages Of Development, Andrea J. Romero, Lisa M. Edwards, Stephanie A. Fryberg, Michele Orduña Jan 2014

Resilience To Discrimination Stress Across Ethnic Identity Stages Of Development, Andrea J. Romero, Lisa M. Edwards, Stephanie A. Fryberg, Michele Orduña

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Ethnic identity development may increase resilience to discrimination and prejudice, which are often common and stressful for ethnic minority adolescents. Based on ethnic identity development theory and resilience theory, we hypothesize that under high discrimination stress, ethnic affirmation and ethnic identity stage will have protective moderating effects on self-esteem and depressive symptoms. A cross-sectional self-report study with 125 ethnic minority adolescents (13–18 years) found that ethnic affirmation (p < .05) had protective effects on depressive symptoms (p < .05) and protective-enhancing effects on self-esteem at high levels of discrimination stress. Achieved ethnic identity stage (p < .05) had protective-stabilizing effects on self-esteem at high discrimination stress. Our findings demonstrate that the protective elements of ethnic identity are feeling positive about one's ethnic group, having learned about one's history, and having resolved conflicts about one's ethnic group.

Treatment Outcomes For At-Risk Young Children With Behavior Problems: Toward A New Definition Of Success, Michael P. Fung, Robert A. Fox, Sara E. Harris

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined the outcomes of Early Pathways (EP), an in-home parent–child therapy program with 447 at-risk children younger than 5 years of age who were referred for severe behavior and emotional problems, such as aggression, oppositional behavior, and separation anxiety. EP emphasized parent-directed training of child behavior strategies including psychoeducation regarding child development, child-led play, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Outcomes were assessed using a unique 2-dimensional definition of treatment completion, which consisted of treatment duration and an assessment of reliable change for the primary outcome measure of child behavior problems. Results showed that the majority of children (63.4%) met or …

A Qualitative Study Of Supervisees’ Internal Representations Of Supervisors, Sarah Knox, William Caperton, David Phelps, Nate Pruitt Jan 2014

A Qualitative Study Of Supervisees’ Internal Representations Of Supervisors, Sarah Knox, William Caperton, David Phelps, Nate Pruitt

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Eleven US-based doctoral student supervisees were interviewed regarding their internal representations (IRs) of their clinical supervisors. Data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research. In speaking about their overall IR experiences, supervisees reported that their exposure to IRs occurred at off-site practicum placements. The IRs, which were both spontaneous and intentionally invoked, usually were auditory in form, were stimulated by supervisees’ clinical work, were used to guide their clinical performance, and were considered a normal part of their development. When describing one specific IR, supervisees characterized the relationship with the supervisor as positive, and noted that supervision focused on clinical interventions. …

Humor Works In Funny Ways: Examining Satirical Tone As A Key Determinant In Political Humor Message Processing, Heather L. Lamarre, Kristen D. Landreville, Dannagal Young, Nathan Gilkerson Jan 2014

Humor Works In Funny Ways: Examining Satirical Tone As A Key Determinant In Political Humor Message Processing, Heather L. Lamarre, Kristen D. Landreville, Dannagal Young, Nathan Gilkerson

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This multi-experiment study builds upon extant political entertainment theory, testing whether satire type (horatian versus juvenalian) cues varying processing mechanisms (message discounting versus resource allocation), and if consequential differences to argument scrutiny levels or message persuasiveness result. Using novel stimuli (e.g., animated cartoons, study one) and real-world late-night political satire (The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, study two), results suggest that satire type was a key antecedent in political humor message processing. Additionally, the varying mechanisms had differential effects on political argument scrutiny levels and message persuasiveness.

Finding The Lost Involuntary Public Figure, Jeffrey Omar Usman Jan 2014

Finding The Lost Involuntary Public Figure, Jeffrey Omar Usman

Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article begins in Part I through observation of the beginning and development of the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on the constitutional limitations imposed upon defamation actions under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Part II of the Article then briefly sets forth the constitutional framework that the Supreme Court imposed in 1974 on defamation actions in Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc. The Article then addresses in Part III how the pressures of the First Amendment have eroded the structure that Gertz built. In doing so, Part III specifically explores the expanding definition of who constitutes a public official …
