Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Amblyomma americanum is the most commonly-encountered tick species in southeastern Virginia, representing approximately 95% of the human-biting tick population in this area. Here we investigated the prevalence of Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Ehrlichia ewingii in questing Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor variabilis ticks collected from multiple sites in southeastern Virginia from 2010–2011. Although both Ehrlichia species were detected in Amblyomma americanum, no evidence of either pathogen was found in Dermacentor variabilis. Prevalence of E. chaffeensis varied by location, ranging from 0 – 5.08% among Amblyomma americanum populations. Ehrlichia ewingii prevalence was slightly higher, ranging from 0 – 8.20% among A. …

Domestic Megalithic Architecture: An Analysis Of Status And Community At And Around The Ancient Maya Site Of Uci, Yucatan, Mexcio, Joseph S. Stair

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

Variation in domestic architecture results from the agency households exercise in their daily lives. This study defines the domestic expression of the megalithic architectural style, based on data collected in and around the ancient Maya site of Ucí, Yucatan, Mexico, by comparing it to its expression in monumental structures. It also shows how the analysis and documentation of architectural variability away from the monumental core can locate more than just commoners and elites within the social organization of the Ancient Maya. This analyzes provides evidence for higher social status for households that possess megalithic architecture since they also possess larger …

Does Proximity To Wetland Shrubland Increase The Habitat Value For Shrubland Birds Of Small Patches Of Upland Shrubland In The Northeastern United States?, Bill Buffum, Richard A. Mckinney

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

The loss of shrubland habitat is linked to population declines for many wildlife species, including several bird species of conservation concern. Conservation agencies in the northeastern United States encourage private landowners to clearcut patches of forest to create shrubland habitat. Many private landowners are only willing to create small clearcuts; therefore, it is important to understand how to maximize the impact of small clearcuts on bird habitat use. In this study we examined whether proximity to wetland shrubland increases the habitat value of small patches of upland shrubland. We conducted point counts at 22 sites containing small patches of upland …

A Comparative Study Of Public Service Motivation Among Organizational Units In A Public University, Demerris Rochelle Brooks-Immel Jan 2014

A Comparative Study Of Public Service Motivation Among Organizational Units In A Public University, Demerris Rochelle Brooks-Immel

Doctoral Dissertations

In the current economic climate of decreased utilitarian and extrinsic rewards, public higher education organizations are challenged to identify low-cost yet satisfying ways to motivate their employees. Previous researchers suggested that the motivation of public employees is a significant aspect of job satisfaction and job choice, attendance, retention, and performance, all of which impact organizational effectiveness. An understanding of what aspects of the organization, its values, and its mission are appealing to employees provides the organization with insight into how best to design work to be meaningful and rewarding; therefore, public-employee motivation should garner the attention of recruiters, managers, and …

Perspective-Taking And Willingness To Engage In Intergroup Contact, Cynthia S. Wang, Kenneth Tai, Gillian Ku, Adam D. Galinsky Jan 2014

Perspective-Taking And Willingness To Engage In Intergroup Contact, Cynthia S. Wang, Kenneth Tai, Gillian Ku, Adam D. Galinsky

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The current research explored whether perspective-taking increases willingness to engage in contact with stereotyped outgroup members. Across three studies, we find that perspective-taking increases willingness to engage in contact with negatively-stereotyped targets. In Study 1, perspective-takers sat closer to, whereas stereotype suppressors sat further from, a hooligan compared to control participants. In Study 2, individual differences in perspective-taking tendencies predicted individuals’ willingness to engage in contact with a hooligan, having effects above and beyond those of empathic concern. Finally, Study 3 demonstrated that perspective-taking’s effects on intergroup contact extend to the target’s group (i.e., another homeless man), but not to …

Influences Of The Digest Classification System: What Can We Know?, Richard A. Danner Jan 2014

Influences Of The Digest Classification System: What Can We Know?, Richard A. Danner

Faculty Scholarship

Robert C. Berring has called West Publishing Company’s American Digest System “the key aspect of the new form of legal literature” that West and other publishers developed in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Berring argued that West’s digests provided practicing lawyers not only the means for locating precedential cases, but a “paradigm for thinking about the law itself” that influenced American lawyers until the development of online legal research systems in the 1970s. This article discusses questions raised by Berring’s scholarship, and examines the late nineteenth and early twentieth century legal environment in which the West digests were …

The Unidroit Principles As Global Background Law, Ralf Michaels Jan 2014

The Unidroit Principles As Global Background Law, Ralf Michaels

Faculty Scholarship

After twenty years of existence, it becomes apparent that the role actually played by the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) is quite different from the one originally intended. This article first presents nine surprising findings concerning the actual use of the PICC, as it can be assessed on the basis of published opinions, legislation, and scholarship. It then uses these findings to suggest that the PICC should not be viewed as a code or even a non-state law. Instead, their nature is that of a Restatement of global general contract law, and their function is that of a …

Long-Range Propagation, Interaction, And Dissipation Of Small-Scale Gravity Waves In The Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere, Christopher J. Heale

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

A 2-D nonlinear, compressible numerical model [Snively and Pasko, 2008] is used in conjunction with ray-theory to investigate the long-range propagation, dissipation and interaction of small-scale gravity waves in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region. The research in this thesis is made up of three distinct studies which build upon each other. The first investigates the thermospheric dissipation of three gravity wave packets representing: (1) A quasi-monochromatic packet, (2) A monochromatic, steady state wave, and (3) A spectrally broad packet, as well as an initial condition specified packet. It is found that dissipation due to molecular viscosity and …

Performance Evaluation Of Polyurethane Composites Using Vacuum Infusion Process, Mohaned M. Mohamed

Doctoral Dissertations

"Glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites have promising applications in infrastructures due to their low cost, high specific stiffness/strength, and corrosion resistance. The pultrusion process is often used to manufacture glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane (PU) composite. The objective of this study is to use thermoset PU resin to manufacture high quality composites for infrastructure applications using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. Using VARTM to fabricate PU resins presents unique challenges. Several modifications however have helped with overcoming these problems. In part I of the research, the mechanical performance of two different PU resin not only evaluated but also compared to one …

Combatting Reproductive Oppression: Why Reproductive Justice Cannot Stop At The Species Border, Marya Torrez Jan 2014

Combatting Reproductive Oppression: Why Reproductive Justice Cannot Stop At The Species Border, Marya Torrez

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the oppression of nonhuman animals and marginalized humans, particularly women of color and low-income women, are deeply interconnected, especially through reproductive exploitation. It contends that the reproductive justice movement must expand its scope to include nonhuman animals, as their exploitation mirrors and perpetuates the oppression of marginalized humans. The article emphasizes that achieving true reproductive justice requires addressing the intertwined systems of domination based on species and sex.

Steubenville And Beyond: The Constitutional Case For Comprehensive Sex Education, Kelly E. Mannion Jan 2014

Steubenville And Beyond: The Constitutional Case For Comprehensive Sex Education, Kelly E. Mannion

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that states are constitutionally required to provide comprehensive sex education to minors, as it is essential for their ability to exercise their constitutional rights to privacy, liberty, and autonomy. The denial of adequate sex education constitutes an undue burden on these rights and fails to meet legal standards for rationality and pedagogical interest. The right to receive information under the First Amendment, combined with the liberty right in sexual and reproductive choice under the Fourteenth Amendment, compels recognition of a state duty to provide such education.

Entanglements: A Study Of Liberal Thought In The Promise Of Marriage, Anat Rosenberg Jan 2014

Entanglements: A Study Of Liberal Thought In The Promise Of Marriage, Anat Rosenberg

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the paradoxical relationship between liberal ideals and status commitments, focusing on the promise of marriage as a microcosm of broader liberal thought. It argues that liberalism did not eliminate or preserve statuses but reinterpreted them, creating a complex interplay where statuses were both maintained and transformed. This analysis reveals persistent conceptual patterns in liberal ideology that entangle progress and hierarchy, challenging the progressive elimination or preservation of statuses. The study suggests that understanding these patterns is crucial for ideology critique and highlights their relevance to contemporary issues like multiculturalism and identity politics.

Give Me Internet Or Give Me Death: Analyzing The Constitutionality Of Internet Restrictions As A Condition Of Supervised Release For Child Pornography Offenders, Laura Tatelman Jan 2014

Give Me Internet Or Give Me Death: Analyzing The Constitutionality Of Internet Restrictions As A Condition Of Supervised Release For Child Pornography Offenders, Laura Tatelman

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that blanket bans on internet and internet-capable devices as a condition of supervised release for child pornography offenders are unconstitutional under the doctrine of unconstitutional conditions. These bans infringe on fundamental liberties such as speech, association, and access to information, disproportionately affecting offenders’ ability to reintegrate into society. The analysis advocates for a balanced approach that prioritizes public safety while respecting constitutional rights, suggesting alternatives like supervised release rather than outright internet prohibition.

Pregnant Pause: The Exclusion Of Pregnant Women From Clinical Research As Sex Discrimination, Richard M. Weinmeyer

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the exclusion of pregnant women from clinical research constitutes sex discrimination. This exclusion, rooted in historical and regulatory factors, has led to a significant lack of data on how medications affect pregnant women, putting their health at risk. The author advocates for legislative action to shift the research culture from exclusion to inclusion, ensuring that pregnant women receive necessary medical treatments with proper research backing.

In The Name Of The Son: The Strategic Importance Of Prenatal Personhood In Abortion Law, Alejandro Madrazo Jan 2014

In The Name Of The Son: The Strategic Importance Of Prenatal Personhood In Abortion Law, Alejandro Madrazo

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

Prenatal personhood has been used as a vehicle for restricting abortion rights and other reproductive rights. This Article explores how, through narrative, the question of the status of prenatal life shapes the structure of debates over abortion law and reproductive rights. Whether prenatal hfe is deemed a person or not determines the narrative structures that can be deployed around abortion and, in consequence, strategically orients these debates by determining the key questions that must be addressed and the scope of answers that can be provided. By carrying out a comparative analysis of opinions of local, national and international courts from …
