Automated Evaluation Of Approximate Matching Algorithms On Real Data, Frank Breitinger, Vassil Roussev Jan 2014

Automated Evaluation Of Approximate Matching Algorithms On Real Data, Frank Breitinger, Vassil Roussev

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Bytewise approximate matching is a relatively new area within digital forensics, but its importance is growing quickly as practitioners are looking for fast methods to screen and analyze the increasing amounts of data in forensic investigations. The essential idea is to complement the use of cryptographic hash functions to detect data objects with bytewise identical representation with the capability to find objects with bytewise similarrepresentations.

Unlike cryptographic hash functions, which have been studied and tested for a long time, approximate matching ones are still in their early development stages and evaluation methodology is still evolving. Broadly, prior approaches have …

Private Enforcement Of The Kansas Wage Payment Act, Joseph Schremmer Jan 2014

Private Enforcement Of The Kansas Wage Payment Act, Joseph Schremmer

Faculty Articles

The argument of this article is that there should be greater private enforcement of the KWPA, and that this goal can be achieved by amending the KWPA to include an attorney fee shifting provision that awards prevailing plaintiffs their reasonable attorney fee. A fee shift is necessary for three reasons. First, without a fee shift, deserving employees are unfairly barred from enforcing their wage payment claims in court. Second, an attorney fee shift is necessary to give meaning to the rights granted by the KWPA, which are rendered hollow by the lack of enforcement under the present system. And third, …

Seeking A Comprehensive Worldview: The Religious Seeker In The Modern World, Michael Gregory

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Anecdotally, the casual observer of anthropological phenomenon may be led to believe that every human is basically the same. Indeed, many may assume that groups of people possess identical beliefs, religions, and expressions that hardly vary across different cultures and generations. Throughout the plethora of different cultures and the countless varieties of religious expression and experience it may seem that all of humanity is merely following the same lifestyles and worldviews as their parents and ancestors with very little change save for the gradual evolution in society. A religious studies scholar, or any scholar of the humanities, however, may notice …

Resource To Support Teaching Local History In Baxter, Iowa, Greg Pickett

Graduate Research Papers

National, state, and local standards are the forerunners in what educators are using to teach students in the classrooms. A lack of resources for young students can be detrimental when teaching students while also trying to follow those standards. The upper elementary grades at Baxter Community School District are lacking in those resources to teach about the local history of their town. The purpose of this project is to create an interactive book that can be used to help fulfill those needs in the teaching of local history. A concern for this project was determining what items to include in …

A Role For Law In Preparing For Death, Barbara A. Noah Jan 2014

A Role For Law In Preparing For Death, Barbara A. Noah

Faculty Scholarship

This Article discusses the limits of how end of life law can address threats to patient autonomy. The reluctance of physicians, patients and family to discuss end of life matters and to confront the certainty of death, together with a culture that actively denies the aging process itself, interferes with a patient’s ability to exercise choice as death approaches. Thus, patients often suffer needlessly from the continuation of treatments and life-supportive measures that they would choose to decline if better informed about their choices and the importance of choosing. Advance directives, as a legal mechanism, often fail fully to protect …

Of "Texans" And "Custers": Maximizing Welfare And Efficiency Through Informal Norms, M. Alexander Pearl Jan 2014

Of "Texans" And "Custers": Maximizing Welfare And Efficiency Through Informal Norms, M. Alexander Pearl

Faculty Articles

Professor Robert Ellickson (Yale) theorized that the informal norms of a close-knit community maximize aggregate welfare and Professor Barak Richman (Duke) identified two distinct types of private ordering systems: “shadow of law” and “order without law.” Under the Ellickson-Richman structure, many Indian tribes qualify as close-knit groups where informal norms effectively operate. The additional trait of isolation — both geographic and cultural — makes them ideal communities for the prioritization of informal norms. The imposition of external law, such as state law, is harmful and unnecessary to the maintenance of order in these communities. Recent legislative efforts to ameliorate criminal …

An Environmental Conversation, William Murray Tabb Jan 2014

An Environmental Conversation, William Murray Tabb

Faculty Articles

Federal environmental law and policy ambitiously purports to provide clean air and water, protect endangered and threatened species, clean-up hazardous and toxic waste sites, and infuse environmental considerations into the decision-making process of all federal agencies with respect to major proposals impacting the environment. Despite such lofty goals and an expansion of the regulatory state, certain types of activities and associated risks have eluded statutory coverage. Additionally, these uncoordinated federal environmental statutes typically embody a singular and sometimes myopic focus, leading to unpredictable or undesirable regulatory gaps, constraints, and inefficiencies. Further, limitations on standing and judicial review may significantly limit …

How To Reach Disengaged Adolescents In Physical Education: A Review Of Causes And Solutions To The Crisis In Physical Education, Sam Backstrom

Graduate Research Papers

This paper reviews the current crisis of adolescent disengagement in physical education. Evidence suggests that current practices are not effectively engaging adolescent students in physical education classes, which may have negative consequences. This paper investigates 1 what factors are causing students to become disengaged with physical education. Environmental factors as well as classroom practices are examined to determine what is causing disengagement in students. When disengagement factors are discovered, solutions are offered on how best to engage students in the physical education environment. Solutions involving both practical applications for teachers as well as possible implications for broader school-based solutions are …

Gardasil Uptake In Boys: Barriers And Strategies To Increase Vaccination Rates, Shawna Allyson Haislet

Graduate Research Papers

The human papillomavirus affects over half of sexually active males and females at some point in their lifetime. Fortunately, there is a recommended vaccine, Gardasil, which can help protect both young males and females from acquiring certain strains of the HPV virus (CDC, 201 ld). The American Academy of Family Physicians, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine recommend HPV vaccination (CDC, 2012d). Even with these recommendations from highly trusted medical organizations and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' (ACIP) routine recommendation for use in 11 and …

The Impact Of Different Types Of Core Training In Stable And Unstable Environments On Markers Of Athletic Performance, Gerry Fitzpatrick Jan 2014

The Impact Of Different Types Of Core Training In Stable And Unstable Environments On Markers Of Athletic Performance, Gerry Fitzpatrick

Theses

Background: Research suggests that core stability and strength is important in facilitating athletes to effectively transfer force to the lower and upper extremities of the body. The purpose of the current research was to evaluate the impact of an eight week intervention of core training on stable and unstable surfaces, and in vertical and horizontal alignments, on markers of athletic performance relevant to team sports.

Methods: The athletic performance markers selected were bounce depth jump, counteiTnovement Jump, agility (T-test), 10 meter sprint, 30 meter sprints, and IRM leg strength as identified by Cressey (2007). Core stability and strength were measured …

The Unregulated Operational Energy Loads Of Low Energy Buildings: Considering The Idiogrpahic Theory Of Design Through Post-Occupancy Evaluation, Cian O'Driscoll Jan 2014

The Unregulated Operational Energy Loads Of Low Energy Buildings: Considering The Idiogrpahic Theory Of Design Through Post-Occupancy Evaluation, Cian O'Driscoll

Theses

The growing concern by building designers, owners and operators of the unregulated energy loads in their buildings is pushing research globally to address this issue. The term “unregulated” energy loads refers to a building’s energy demands outside of the “regulated” heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting loads (Whyte, J. and Gann, D.M., 2001). These unregulated energy loads are primarily produced by the equipment and activities of those who work in the building, as opposed to the energy that maintains basic building comfort. Energy research is continually compounding the urgent need to craft innovative design strategies, and sustainable feedback …

Receptive Ecumenism And Justification: Roman Catholic And Reformed Doctrine In Contemporary Context, Sarah Timmer Jan 2014

Receptive Ecumenism And Justification: Roman Catholic And Reformed Doctrine In Contemporary Context, Sarah Timmer

Dissertations (1934 -)

Receptive Ecumenism is a reassessment of the ecumenical process, in light of the remaining challenges and difficulties faced by ecumenists. It recognizes that ecumenism might need to adjust to the complex diversity of the Christian church today, especially amidst a culture that no longer sees diversity as a negative thing. The goal of traditional ecumenism, visible unity through theological and ecclesiological convergence, is put aside in favor of an ecumenism of mutual enrichment and self-examination. The Catholic-Lutheran Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification is an example of traditional ecumenism. This dissertation examines some strengths and weaknesses of the Joint …
