Prevalence Of Malaria And Selected Arboviral Infections In Patients Presenting With Undiagnosed Febrile Illness In Rusinga Island, Kenya, Purity Ngina Kipanga Jan 2014

Prevalence Of Malaria And Selected Arboviral Infections In Patients Presenting With Undiagnosed Febrile Illness In Rusinga Island, Kenya, Purity Ngina Kipanga

All Master’s Theses

Onset of uncomplicated malaria is characterized by fever, headache, joint pains, myalgia and lack of appetite. These non-specific signs and symptoms also present in patients with arthropod borne viral (arboviral) infections complicate differential diagnoses. The lack of diagnostics that can detect arboviral infections in Kenyan public hospitals coupled with malaria diagnostic tools incapable of detecting low Plasmodiumparasitemia, has led to diagnosis based on clinical symptoms only, favouring malaria diagnosis at the expense of arboviral infections detection.Investigations were conducted to detect Plasmodiumparasites undetected by microscopy and rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and determine Sindbis and Bunyamwera viruses neutralizing antibodies among undiagnosed febrile ill patients …

Effect Of Herbivore-Induced Plant Volatiles Of Brachiaria Brizantha On Neighbouring Maize For Chilo Partellus Management In Suba District, Homa-Bay County, Kenya, Henlay Juma Otieno Magara Jan 2014

Effect Of Herbivore-Induced Plant Volatiles Of Brachiaria Brizantha On Neighbouring Maize For Chilo Partellus Management In Suba District, Homa-Bay County, Kenya, Henlay Juma Otieno Magara

All Master’s Theses

The Lepidopteran stemborer Chilo partellus is a key constraint to cereal production in most resource-poor farming systems as it causes damage to the crop, accruing up to 80%. When plants are damaged by herbivorous insects, they produce herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) which can act as repellants for these insect pests and as attractants for organisms antagonistic to these pests (parasitic wasps and predators). Plants can also produce signals that warn other plants of impending attack. Thus, HIPVs potentially have a practical role in crop protection by directly deterring further colonization in already infested and neighbouring plants and indirectly by attracting …

Educating A New Generation Of Library And Information Science Professionals: A United States Perspective, Krystyna K. Matusiak, Mary Stansbury, Ewa Barczyk

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the U.S model of library and information science (LIS) education in light of the changes brought about by information and communication technology. The accepted model of professional preparation in the United States has emphasized graduate education on a Master’s level from LIS programs accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). The authors trace the historical development of this approach and provide an overview of the ALA accreditation process. Furthermore, they examine the strategies of LIS programs in adjusting to the changing information environment, present the debate about the iSchool movement, and discuss the evolution of the core …

Remembering The Concentration Camps: Aleksander Kulisiewicz And His Concerts Of Prisoners' Songs In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Barbara Ann Milewski Jan 2014

Remembering The Concentration Camps: Aleksander Kulisiewicz And His Concerts Of Prisoners' Songs In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Barbara Ann Milewski

Music Faculty Works

This chapter considers the performances of Aleksander Kulisiewicz, a Polish political prisoner who composed and collected songs in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. In the 1960s and 1970s, he would perform these works on stages across Europe, with frequent appearances in East and West Germany (in front of highly diverse audiences. When compared to other forms of musical commemoration at the time, his appearances uniquely operate somewhere in between performance and historical witnessing by building on his authentic experience and profound belief in remembrance. While Kulisiewicz’s activity evolved out of his personal Holocaust experience, musicians and composers of subsequent generations also …

Corruption Temptation, Guy-Uriel Charles Jan 2014

Corruption Temptation, Guy-Uriel Charles

Faculty Scholarship

In response to Professor Lawrence Lessig’s Jorde Lecture, I suggest that corruption is not the proper conceptual vehicle for thinking about the problems that Professor Lessig wants us to think about. I argue that Professor Lessig’s real concern is that, for the vast majority of citizens, wealth presents a significant barrier to political participation in the funding of campaigns. Professor Lessig ought to discuss the wealth problem directly. I conclude with three reasons why the corruption temptation ought to be resisted.

Supplying Compliance: Why And When The United States Complies With Wto Rulings, Rachel Brewster, Adam Chilton Jan 2014

Supplying Compliance: Why And When The United States Complies With Wto Rulings, Rachel Brewster, Adam Chilton

Faculty Scholarship

In studies of compliance with international law, the focus is usually on the “demand side” – that is, how to increase the pressure on the state to comply. Less attention has been paid, however, to the consequences of the “supply side” – who within the state is responsible for the compliance. This Article is the first study to systematically address the issue of how different actors within the United States government alter national policy in response to the violations of international law. The Article does so by examining cases initiated under the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU). …

Factors That Promote And Inhibit Client Disclosure Of Suicidal Ideation, Robert William Orf Jan 2014

Factors That Promote And Inhibit Client Disclosure Of Suicidal Ideation, Robert William Orf

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Approximately 36,000 people commit suicide in the U.S. each year, making it the fourth leading cause of death for adults between 18 and 65-years-old. Clients participating in psychotherapeutic treatment are at elevated risk for suicide, due to the emotional distress that drives their entry into psychotherapy. Therapists cannot know the full extent of their clients’ risk for suicide if clients do not fully confide their thoughts and intentions. The current study sought to discover factors that inhibit and promote client disclosure of these thoughts and behaviors. The study utilized the Suicidal Ideation in Psychotherapy Questionnaire (SIPQ), a questionnaire developed for …

Exploiting Fluencies: Educational Expropriation Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training, Lucinda Rush, Dylan E. Wittkower Jan 2014

Exploiting Fluencies: Educational Expropriation Of Social Networking Site Consumer Training, Lucinda Rush, Dylan E. Wittkower

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

The idea of the digital native was based on abstraction; when we look in detail at the digital activities of high-school and college students, we see deskilling and consumer training rather than information literacy or technical fluency. Yet that training is still training, and may be adaptable in such a way that it can become a literacy—in, for example, the way militaries have mobilised skill-sets produced through gaming. We too can and should mine the narrow and profit-driven consumer training that emerging adults have undergone for kinds of inquiry and critical engagement for which they may have inadvertently been given …

Prune-And-Score: Learning For Greedy Coreference Resolution, Chao Ma, Janardhan Rao Doppa, J. Walker Orr, Prashanth Mannem, Xiaoli Fern, Tom Dietterich, Prasad Tadepalli

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

We propose a novel search-based approach for greedy coreference resolution, where the mentions are processed in order and added to previous coreference clusters. Our method is distinguished by the use of two functions to make each coreference decision: a pruning function that prunes bad coreference decisions from further consideration, and a scoring function that then selects the best among the remaining decisions. Our framework reduces learning of these functions to rank learning, which helps leverage powerful off-the-shelf rank-learners. We show that our Prune-and-Score approach is superior to using a single scoring function to make both decisions and outperforms several state-of-the-art …

Beginning Library & Information Systems Strategies

Scholarly or academic journals are essential resources for doing academic research. While popular magazines like Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report are excellent sources of information on nearly any topic, they are written with the average reader in mind and do not include the depth of coverage that an academic researcher would need. For in‐depth examination of a topic, academic, scholarly publications should be the researcher's first choice.

Public Shaming In The Digital Age: Are Criminal Laws The Most Effective Means To Regulate Revenge Porn?, Luke Fiedler Jan 2014

Public Shaming In The Digital Age: Are Criminal Laws The Most Effective Means To Regulate Revenge Porn?, Luke Fiedler

Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review

This Note attempts to develop an initial framework for best regulating the growing trend of online harassment known as “revenge porn.” Revenge porn is the act of widely disseminating via the Internet nude or otherwise explicit photos or videos that were produced and exchanged while two individuals shared an intimate encounter or relationship. Oftentimes revenge porn “attacks” occur out of spite or scorn felt by one of the individuals as a way to publically humiliate the other individual. This Note argues for copyright law as the ideal area of the law from which revenge porn can and should be regulated. …

Unidirectional Rotary Tendency Of A Wave-Driven Rotor, Yingchen Yang Jan 2014

Unidirectional Rotary Tendency Of A Wave-Driven Rotor, Yingchen Yang

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Ocean waves can directly drive WECs (wave energy converters) to perform two types of motion—reciprocating motion and unidirectional rotary motion. In general, the efficiency of a reciprocating WEC is strongly wave-frequency dependent, whereas the efficiency of a rotary WEC can be somewhat wave-frequency independent. To date, a huge majority of WEC technologies under development in industry belong to the reciprocating class, and only a few WEC concepts fall in the unidirectional rotary class. In the present work, a wave-driven rotor for unidirectional rotary motion was proposed and characterized. A numerical tool has been developed for characterization of the rotor’s unidirectional …
