Modulation Of Immunity Via Antibodies Displayed On In Situ Forming Peptide Co-Assemblies, Yi Wen Jan 2014

Modulation Of Immunity Via Antibodies Displayed On In Situ Forming Peptide Co-Assemblies, Yi Wen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many diseases are associated with disruption of immune homeostasis. Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) targeting soluble antigens or immune cell surface molecules have been developed to modulate immunity. However, systemic administration can lead to severe immune related side effects. This dissertation investigated a versatile platform to display antibodies locally in diseased tissues to minimize unwanted systemic exposure. This system is a stimuli-responsive and injectable formulation utilizing in situ forming peptide co-assemblies and two linker proteins. The self-assembling peptides EAK16-II and EAKIIH6 co-assemble into fibrous structures with accessible His-tags when exposed to salts. Anti-His-tag antibodies (αH6-IgG) bind to these His-tags and provide fragment …

Revisiting The Question “More Guns, Less Crime?” New Estimates Using Spatial Econometric Techniques, Donald J. Lacombe, Amanda Ross Jan 2014

Revisiting The Question “More Guns, Less Crime?” New Estimates Using Spatial Econometric Techniques, Donald J. Lacombe, Amanda Ross

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

In a highly debated paper, Lott and Mustard (1997) found that allowing citizens to carry concealed handguns reduced crime. Since then, numerous researchers have questioned the validity of the findings. In addition, ongoing work has shown there is an important spatial component to crime. In this paper, we use spatial econometric techniques to estimate the impact of adoption of concealed weapons laws by some states on crime rates across the U.S. We find there are spillover effects of concealed weapons laws and that spatial dependence plays an important role when estimating the effect of these laws on crime.

Religion And Aids In Sub-Saharan Africa: Unbundling Religious Institutions, Amanda Mandzik, Andrew T. Young Jan 2014

Religion And Aids In Sub-Saharan Africa: Unbundling Religious Institutions, Amanda Mandzik, Andrew T. Young

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Evidence of relationships between religious affiliation and the African AIDS pandemic is found in the medical, religion, and sociology literatures. In particular, studies have shown that predominantly Christian countries tend to have higher HIV rates than predominantly Muslim countries. These relationships have been largely unexplored by economists and we seek to identify underlying institutions using a panel of up to 43 sub-Saharan African countries for 1990- 2010. Catholic antagonism towards condom use has often but proposed, but we report that the protestant (rather than the Catholic) population share drives the Christianity/HIV correlation. (Also, condom use actually correlates positively with HIV …

State Bankruptcy Law And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From A Border Analysis, Shawn M. Rohlin, Amanda Ross Jan 2014

State Bankruptcy Law And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From A Border Analysis, Shawn M. Rohlin, Amanda Ross

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper examines how differences in state bankruptcy laws, specifically the amount of the homestead exemption, affect business location decisions within a few miles of the state boundary. By focusing on these border areas, we are able to more effectively control for unobserved local attributes and isolate the effect of more wealth protection. We find that an increase in the homestead exemption attracts new businesses. We also find that a more generous homestead exemption has a positive impact on existing businesses, suggesting that asset protection through bankruptcy law encourages successful entrepreneurs to incur the risks. Our results indicate that the …

Local Government Border Congruence And The Fiscal Commons: Evidence From Ohio School Districts*, Joshua C. Hall Jan 2014

Local Government Border Congruence And The Fiscal Commons: Evidence From Ohio School Districts*, Joshua C. Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

School district and municipal borders do not always align. Noncongruent borders can create a fiscal commons problem where new development does not entirely “pay its way.” In response, frustrated citizens often respond by voting for lower school spending. Using GIS data on Ohio school districts, the degree of non-congruence between school district and municipal territory is calculated. The results indicate that school districts with non-congruent borders generate less revenue from local sources and that these effects seem to increase with the degree of non-congruence. The findings are robust between OLS and treatment effects regression.

Housing Vouchers And The Price Of Rental Housing, Michael D. Eriksen, Amanda Ross Jan 2014

Housing Vouchers And The Price Of Rental Housing, Michael D. Eriksen, Amanda Ross

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We estimate the effect of increasing the supply of housing vouchers on rents using a panel of housing units in the American Housing Survey. We do not find that an increase in vouchers affected the overall price of rental housing, but do estimate differences in effects based on an individual unit’s rent before the voucher expansion. Our results are consistent with voucher recipients renting more expensive units after receiving the subsidy. We also find that the largest price increases were for units near the maximum allowable voucher rent in cities with an inelastic housing supply.

Loss Aversion, Team Relocations, And Major League Expansion, Brad Humphreys, Li Zhou Jan 2014

Loss Aversion, Team Relocations, And Major League Expansion, Brad Humphreys, Li Zhou

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Professional sports teams receive large public subsidies for new facility construction. Empirical research suggests that these subsidies cannot be justified by tangible or intangible economic benefits. We develop a model of bargaining between local governments and teams over subsidies that includes league expansion decisions. The model features loss aversion by fans that captures lost utility when a team leaves a city. The model predicts that teams exploit this loss aversion to extract larger than expected subsidies from local governments, providing an explanation for these large subsidies and highlighting the importance of anti-trust exemptions in enhancing teams' bargaining positions.

Has The War Between The Rent Seekers Escalated?, Russell S. Sobel, Joshua C. Hall Jan 2014

Has The War Between The Rent Seekers Escalated?, Russell S. Sobel, Joshua C. Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Vedder and Gallaway (1991) develop and test a unique theory about the interactions between the levels of spending captured by rent-seeking interest groups. They hypothesize that initially rent seekers cooperate in ways that expand government spending and rents. At some point, however, groups can only expand their rents at the expense of other rent-seekers and that this relationship will strengthen over time. In this brief note, we update their empirical model 20 years into the future and find their prediction was accurate. The relationship is now stronger and more states have moved into the negative range.

The Direct And Indirect Effects Of Small Business Administration Lending On Growth: Evidence From U.S. County-Level Data, Andrew T. Young, Matthew J. Higgins, Donald J. Lacombe, Briana Sell Jan 2014

The Direct And Indirect Effects Of Small Business Administration Lending On Growth: Evidence From U.S. County-Level Data, Andrew T. Young, Matthew J. Higgins, Donald J. Lacombe, Briana Sell

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Conventional wisdom suggests that small businesses are innovative engines of Schumpetarian growth. However, as small businesses, they are likely to face credit rationing in financial markets. If true then policies that promote lending to small businesses may yield substantial economy-wide returns. We examine the relationship between Small Business Administration (SBA) lending and local economic growth using a spatial econometric framework and a sample of 3,035 U.S. counties for the years 1980 to 2009. We find evidence that a county’s SBA lending per capita is associated with direct negative effects on its income growth. We also find evidence of indirect negative …

Lost And Found: Immigrant Conversion Stories, The New Evangelization, And Parish Life, Brett C. Hoover Jan 2014

Lost And Found: Immigrant Conversion Stories, The New Evangelization, And Parish Life, Brett C. Hoover

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The author reflects on a conversion narrative that emerged in the context of a yearlong ethnographic study of a Catholic parish in the Midwest. The study was intended to uncover the practices and understandings of parish life in a shared parish, that is, a parish with two or more distinct cultural communities with their own masses and ministries but sharing the same parish facilities. The “lost and found” narrative of conversion that emerged in the parish’s Latino/a community has roots in Latin American manifestations of the new evangelization but has taken particular form here in the United States. It frames …

A New Framework For Assessing Clinical Data Transparency Initiatives, Erika Lietzan Jan 2014

A New Framework For Assessing Clinical Data Transparency Initiatives, Erika Lietzan

Faculty Publications

Biopharmaceutical companies submit vast amounts of clinical data and analysis to support approval of their medicines, expecting the information to be kept confidential, as has been the practice of regulators around the world for decades. Over the last ten years, however, pressure has been mounting for regulators or industry to release this information. Legal scholars have generally taken the view that no relevant doctrines or bodies of law preclude the release of this material and that public policy considerations compel its release. This article argues that the scholarship to date has overlooked key considerations: the special issues presented by operation …

Performance Assessment Of Capture Zones Generated By Pv-Powered Pump And Treat Systems, Yovanna Cortes Di Lena Jan 2014

Performance Assessment Of Capture Zones Generated By Pv-Powered Pump And Treat Systems, Yovanna Cortes Di Lena

Doctoral Dissertations

"Pump and treat (P&T) is a technology that has been extensively used to remove and/or contain contaminated groundwater. Hydraulic containment of contaminants is accomplished by generating capture zones through pumping of groundwater. An appropriate delineation of capture zones is necessary to design an effective P&T system. P&T systems conventionally operate continuously to achieve steady-state capture zones, which require significant amounts of energy. The use of renewable energies to meet power demands of remedial systems may reduce a project's carbon dioxide emissions. The hydraulic effectiveness of a photovoltaic (PV) powered P&T system without energy storage was characterized using data collected at …

Speciation Dynamics Of An Agent-Based Evolution Model In Phenotype Space, Adam David Scott Jan 2014

Speciation Dynamics Of An Agent-Based Evolution Model In Phenotype Space, Adam David Scott

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is an exploration of phase transition behavior and clustering of populations of organisms in an agent-based model of evolutionary dynamics. The agents in the model are organisms, described as branching-coalescing random walkers, which are characterized by their coordinates in a two-dimensional phenotype space. Neutral evolutionary conditions are assumed, such that no organism has a fitness advantage regardless of its phenotype location. Lineages of organisms evolve by limiting the maximum possible offspring distance from their parent(s) (mutability, which is the only heritable trait) along each coordinate in phenotype space. As mutability is varied, a non-equilibrium phase transition is shown …

The Structure And Properties Of Ternary Zinc Phosphate Glasses For Optical Applications, Charmayne Elizabeth Smith Jan 2014

The Structure And Properties Of Ternary Zinc Phosphate Glasses For Optical Applications, Charmayne Elizabeth Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation focuses on the properties and structures of ternary zinc phosphate glasses that have recently been investigated as substrates for femto-second (fs) laser writing. Although these glasses have potential for use as optical substrates, their poor chemical properties limit their applications. In this work, ternary zinc phosphate glasses were studied to find compositions with enhanced chemical durability and the properties and structures of the investigated glasses are reported.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 include the first systematic studies of the properties, structures of zinc aluminophosphate (ZAP) glasses and phase relationships in the ZnO-Al₂O₃-P₂O₅ system, respectively. Adding alumina to a …

Rapid Repair Of Severely Damaged Rc Columns Under Combined Loading Of Flexure, Shear, And Torsion With Externally Bonded Cfrp, Ruili He

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research aimed to develop a technique to rapidly repair reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns for emergency service restoration after severe earthquake damage has occurred. Experimental and analytical studies were conducted to study the performance and effectiveness of the proposed repair method. The experimental study included a series of 1/2-scale RC square bridge columns originally tested to failure under constant axial and increasing cyclic lateral loadings resulting in combined flexure, shear, and torsion with different torsional-to-flexural moment ratios. Using externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets, each column was repaired over a 3-day period and then retested under the …

Identifying And Overcoming The Barriers To Sustainable Construction, Cristin Szydlik Jan 2014

Identifying And Overcoming The Barriers To Sustainable Construction, Cristin Szydlik

Doctoral Dissertations

"Sustainable construction has become increasingly more prevalent over the last decade. All federal and most state government buildings are mandated to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification (at the silver level at a minimum). Although sustainable construction is increasingly more common, there are still barriers to the successful completion of a sustainable project, specifically with regards to projects achieving LEED certification. There are still holes in the guidance on how to successfully achieve LEED certification. Even though government agencies have mandated LEED certification, the existing barriers are preventing buildings from achieving certification, which can delay the building …

Emission Source Microscopy For Electromagnetic Interference Source Localization, Pratik Rajesh Maheshwari Jan 2014

Emission Source Microscopy For Electromagnetic Interference Source Localization, Pratik Rajesh Maheshwari

Doctoral Dissertations

"For complex and large systems with multiple sources, it is often difficult to localize the sources of radiation. Near-field electromagnetic scanning is used often for root-cause diagnosis by determining field distribution close to the PCB. In the near-field, the evanescent waves are dominant, which may lead to the misinterpretation of them being the dominant sources contributing to the far-field. Another limitation of near-field scanning is that the probe may not be able to access all locations near the PCB due to the complex geometry and high component density. Two-dimensional synthetic aperture radar is a well-known technique used for antenna diagnostic …

Local Liquid Velocity Measurement Of Trickle Bed Reactor Using Digitial Industrial X-Ray Radiography, Khairul Anuar Mohd Salleh Jan 2014

Local Liquid Velocity Measurement Of Trickle Bed Reactor Using Digitial Industrial X-Ray Radiography, Khairul Anuar Mohd Salleh

Doctoral Dissertations

"Trickle Bed Reactors (TBRs) are fixed beds of particles in which both liquid and gas flow concurrently downward. They are widely used to produce not only fuels but also lubrication products. The measurement and the knowledge of local liquid velocities (VLL) in TBRs is less which is essential for advancing the understanding of its hydrodynamics and for validation computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Therefore, this work focused on developing a new, non-invasive, statistically reliable technique that can be used to measure local liquid velocity (VLL) in two-dimensions (2-D). This is performed by combining Digital Industrial X-ray Radiography (DIR) and …

Functionally Graded Ti6sl4v And Inconel 625 By Laser Metal Deposition, Syamala Rani Pulugurtha Jan 2014

Functionally Graded Ti6sl4v And Inconel 625 By Laser Metal Deposition, Syamala Rani Pulugurtha

Doctoral Dissertations

"The objective of the current work was to fabricate a crack-free functionally graded Ti6Al4V and Inconel 625 thin wall structure by Laser Metal Deposition (LMD). One potential application for the current material system is the ability to fabricate a functionally graded alloy that can be used in a space heat exchanger. The two alloys, Inconel 625 and Ti6Al4V are currently used for aerospace applications. They were chosen as candidates for grading because functionally grading those combines the properties of high strength/weight ratio of Ti6Al4V and high temperature oxidation resistance of Inconel 625 into one multifunctional material for the end application. …

"Recurrent events (RE) occur in many disciplines, such as biomedical, engineering, actuarial science, sociology, economy to name a few. It is then important to develop dynamic models for their modeling and analysis. Of interest with data collected in a RE monitoring are inferential problems pertaining to the distribution function F of the time between occurrences, or that of the distribution function G of the monitoring window, and their functionals such as quantiles, mean. These problems include, but not limited to: estimating F parametrically or nonparametrically; goodness of fit tests on an hypothesized family of distributions; efficient of tests; regression-type models, …

Plant Uptake Of Environmental Contaminants: Applications In Phytoscreening, Matthew Alan Limmer Jan 2014

Plant Uptake Of Environmental Contaminants: Applications In Phytoscreening, Matthew Alan Limmer

Doctoral Dissertations

"Plants interact directly with their surroundings, extracting nutrients and water from the subsurface to support growth and development of the plant. Through the roots, plants also exude and uptake numerous chemicals. Many of the pathways can also be used by environmental contaminants to be translocated to above ground plant tissues. Such uptake of contaminants has proven useful in remediation and phytoscreening - the use of plants to delineate contaminant plumes. Sampling of trees at contaminated field sites has been used to identify areas of groundwater contaminated with a variety of chlorinated solvents. The use of plants as contaminant biosensors requires …

Energy Efficient And Latency Aware Adaptive Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Thomas Mark Daniel Szalapski Jan 2014

Energy Efficient And Latency Aware Adaptive Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Thomas Mark Daniel Szalapski

Doctoral Dissertations

"Wireless sensor networks are composed of a few to several thousand sensors deployed over an area or on specific objects to sense data and report that data back to a sink either directly or through a series of hops across other sensor nodes. There are many applications for wireless sensor networks including environment monitoring, wildlife tracking, security, structural heath monitoring, troop tracking, and many others. The sensors communicate wirelessly and are typically very small in size and powered by batteries. Wireless sensor networks are thus often constrained in bandwidth, processor speed, and power. Also, many wireless sensor network applications have …

The Effect Of Composition On The Viscosity, Crystallization And Dissolution Of Simple Borate Glasses And Compositional Design Of Borate Based Bioactive Glasses, Kathryn Lynn Goetschius Jan 2014

The Effect Of Composition On The Viscosity, Crystallization And Dissolution Of Simple Borate Glasses And Compositional Design Of Borate Based Bioactive Glasses, Kathryn Lynn Goetschius

Doctoral Dissertations

"Borate glasses have recently been developed for a variety of medical applications, but much less is known about their structures and properties than more common silicate glasses. Melt properties and crystallization tendency for compositions in the Na2O-CaO-B2O3 system were characterized using differential thermal analysis and viscosity measurements. Characteristic viscosity (isokom) temperatures varied with the ratio between the modifier content (Na2O+CaO) and B2O3, particularly at lower temperatures, consistent with the changes in the relative concentrations of tetrahedral borons in the glass structure.

Similar glasses were used to study dissolution processes …

Effect Of Solid Solutions And Second Phases On The Thermal Conductivity Of Zirconium Diboride Ceramics, Gregory John Kenneth Harrington Jan 2014

Effect Of Solid Solutions And Second Phases On The Thermal Conductivity Of Zirconium Diboride Ceramics, Gregory John Kenneth Harrington

Doctoral Dissertations

"The research presented in this dissertation is focused on the thermal conductivity (k) of ZrB2 ceramics. The goal was to develop a better understanding of how various solid solutions and second phases affect the thermal and electrical transport in ZrB2, with a focus on the effect of C, W, and ZrC. The first study showed C additions improved densification and it was proposed that the reduction of boria was the impetus for this result. Boron carbide was formed by the reaction of excess C with reduced B and its formation was mitigated by the addition of ZrH …

Radio Frequency Interference (Rfi) Modeling Of Complex Modules In Mobile Devices And System-Level Modeling For Transient Esd Simulation, Tianqi Li Jan 2014

Radio Frequency Interference (Rfi) Modeling Of Complex Modules In Mobile Devices And System-Level Modeling For Transient Esd Simulation, Tianqi Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"The thesis is composed of three papers, which cover the systematic modeling of radio-frequency-interference (RFI) and electro-static-discharge (ESD) problems happened in mobile devices.

In the first paper, an averaging technique is developed, for phase resolved scanning over random fields generated by multiple uncorrelated stochastic sources. This method can separate the field contribution of each noise source and resulting field patterns as if the out-of-interest sources were turned off. The scanned data can be used for emission source localization, far-field pattern calculation and Huygens's box modeling.

In the second paper, using Huygens's Equivalent Theorem a systematic approach for the modeling of …
