Lightweight Data Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks Using Huffman Coding, Henry P. Medeiros, Marcos C. Maciel, Richard D. Souza, Marcelo E. Pellenz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper presents a lightweight data compression method for wireless sensor networks monitoring environmental parameters with low resolution sensors. Instead of attempting to devise novel ad hoc algorithms, we show that, given general knowledge of the parameters that must be monitored, it is possible to efficiently employ conventional Huffman coding to represent the same parameter when measured at different locations and time periods. When the data collected by the sensor nodes consists of integer measurements, the Huffman dictionary computed using statistics inferred from public datasets often approaches the entropy of the data. Results using temperature and relative humidity measurements show …

Clinical Collaborations: Going Global To Advance Social Entrepreneurship, Deborah Burand, Susan R. Jones, Jonathan Ng, Alicia E. Plerhoples
Articles
In the summer of 2012, transactional law clinics from three U.S. law schools: George Washington University; Georgetown University; and the University of Michigan launched a collaboration to serve a common client — Ashoka, a global nonprofit organization that supports close to 3,000 social entrepreneurs across 76 countries. While clinic collaborations within universities happen occasionally, clinic collaborations across universities are unusual. This essay focuses on the motivations, operations, lessons, and next steps of this cross-university, clinical collaboration aimed at advancing social entrepreneurship globally. Specifically, this essay examines why the collaboration was launched, how the collaboration is structured, what the collaboration offers …
Thermal Tuning Of Mems Buckled Membrane Actuator Stiffness, Robert A. Lake, Kyle K. Ziegler, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.
Thermal Tuning Of Mems Buckled Membrane Actuator Stiffness, Robert A. Lake, Kyle K. Ziegler, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The thermal tuning characteristics of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) buckled membrane exhibiting regions of both positive and negative stiffness is examined and analyzed using finite element method (FEM) simulation and through experimentation. The membranes are fabricated by releasing a silicon/silicon dioxide (Si/SiO2) laminated membrane from a silicon on insulator (SOI) wafer. The difference in thermal expansion coefficients between Si and SiO2 induces a compressive stress in the SiO2 layer causing out-of-plane buckling of the membrane. This structure is found to have positive and negative stiffness regions when actuated with a transverse force. It is demonstrated that the …

The Conceptual Framework And Assessment Methodology For The Systematic Reviews Of Community-Based Interventions For The Prevention And Control Of Infectious Diseases Of Poverty, Zohra S. Lassi, Rehana A. Salam, Jai K. Das, Zulfiqar A. Bhutta
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
This paper describes the conceptual framework and the methodology used to guide the systematic reviews of community-based interventions (CBIs) for the prevention and control of infectious diseases of poverty (IDoP). We adapted the conceptual framework from the 3ie work on the 'Community-Based Intervention Packages for Preventing Maternal Morbidity and Mortality and Improving Neonatal Outcomes' to aid in the analyzing of the existing CBIs for IDoP. The conceptual framework revolves around objectives, inputs, processes, outputs, outcomes, and impacts showing the theoretical linkages between the delivery of the interventions targeting these diseases through various community delivery platforms and the consequent health impacts. …
An Unnatural Divide: How Law Obscures Individual Environmental Harms, Katrina Fischer Kuh
An Unnatural Divide: How Law Obscures Individual Environmental Harms, Katrina Fischer Kuh
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Many of the forces that obscure the connections between individuals and the environment have their origin in extralegal constraints, such as economic forces, cognitive limitations, and the limits of scientific understanding. These constraints are often systemic and, while perhaps influenced by law, not directly a product of law. However, there are some ways in which law perpetuates and exacerbates a misleading and artificial separation between individuals as separate from, instead of an interdependent part of, nature. Laws that obscure the connection between individuals and nature can be grouped into several categories: (1) laws that employ individual exceptionalism, that is, focus …

Management Of Dental Extraction In A Female Patient With Fanconi Anemia, Andre Peisker, Gregor F. Raschke, Arndt Guentsch, Korosh Roshanghias, Stefan Schultze-Mosgau
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
Oral surgery in patients with bleeding disorders is associated with a high risk of bleeding during and after surgery. This article is aimed to present the case of an eight-year-old girl suffering from severe Fanconi anemia with pancytopenia who underwent a dental extraction. The hemostatic effect of local administration of tranexamic acid in combination with a primary suture seems to be extremely helpful in order to reduce the necessity of blood products and the risk of postoperative bleeding.
Building A Professional Learning Community At The University Level: A Case Study Of An Information Fluency Initiative, Susan Bennett Slavicz
Building A Professional Learning Community At The University Level: A Case Study Of An Information Fluency Initiative, Susan Bennett Slavicz
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An examination of the research regarding the problems associated with student academic writing indicated that two abilities, writing abilities and information literacy skills, intersect, and that an accepted term for this intersection is information literacy. The University of Central Florida’s Information Fluency Initiative recognized information literacy as a key component in developing students’ information fluency skills. This qualitative case study of the initiative used semi-structured interviews, study of documents, and observations to gather data in order to describe how the university planned, developed, and implemented the initiative. Study of relevant literature, narrative analysis (Tierney & Lincoln, 1997), inductive analysis (Hatch, …
E Pluribus Unum? Liberalism And The Search For Civility In America, Jeannemarie Halleck
E Pluribus Unum? Liberalism And The Search For Civility In America, Jeannemarie Halleck
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores issues of civility in liberal democracy, and in particular, how civility and civic engagement must be regenerated in order to forward the democratic ideals of equal rights, citizen equality and collective self-government in a meaningful way. Liberal democracy presupposes a level of civility in order to uphold standards of individual liberty and freedom, however as a theory it fails to compel citizens to support levels of mutual respect.
An etymological exploration of the term civility introduces the work of puritan theologian Roger Williams, whose early writings on individual liberty as well as the role of civility and …
Gender Differences In High Sensitivity C - Reactive Protein And Self-Reported Muscle Strengthening Activity Among U.S. Adults, Michael R. Richardson
Gender Differences In High Sensitivity C - Reactive Protein And Self-Reported Muscle Strengthening Activity Among U.S. Adults, Michael R. Richardson

The Effect Of Music Familiarity On Driving: A Simulated Study Of The Impact Of Music Familiarity Under Different Driving Conditions, Zachary N. Jimison
The Effect Of Music Familiarity On Driving: A Simulated Study Of The Impact Of Music Familiarity Under Different Driving Conditions, Zachary N. Jimison
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Music is one of the most popular activities while driving. Previous research on music while driving has been mixed, with some researchers finding music to be a distractor and some research finding music to be facilitative to driving performance. The current study was designed to determine if familiarity with the music might explain the difference found between self-selected and experimenter-selected music, and whether the difficulty of the driving conditions affected music’s relationship to driving performance. One hundred and sixty-five University students participated in a driving simulation both with music and without music. Under the “with music” condition, participants were randomly …
The Effects Of Sampling Design On Abundance And Distribution Of Bottlenose Dolphins In The St. Johns River, Florida, Samantha Ryanne Nekolny
The Effects Of Sampling Design On Abundance And Distribution Of Bottlenose Dolphins In The St. Johns River, Florida, Samantha Ryanne Nekolny
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is tasked with upholding the regulations prescribed in the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. One of the ways this is accomplished is by producing regular stock assessment reports. For these reports, knowledge about a species abundance and distribution is a vital component, allowing informed management decisions to be made that may potentially reduce the natural and anthropogenic impacts on the organisms. In 2010, an Unusual Mortality Event (UME) occurred in the lower St. Johns River, resulting in an unusually large number of bottlenose dolphin strandings. As the data regarding this population was …
The Performance Of Simple Artificial Floating Wetland Communities And Their Effects On Aquatic Nutrient Levels And Algal Abundance, Bradley L. Sleeth
The Performance Of Simple Artificial Floating Wetland Communities And Their Effects On Aquatic Nutrient Levels And Algal Abundance, Bradley L. Sleeth
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Harmful algal blooms are exponential increases in autotrophic microorganisms that proliferate in such a way that the surrounding environment, the local economy and the health of regional populations are negatively affected. Among the causes of these blooms are anthropogenic inputs of excess nitrogen and phosphorus into the environment through overfertilization. Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) have emerged as a novel method of reducing the negative impacts of these nutrient inputs by using artificial rafts to float normally emergent wetland plants on the surface of water bodies to assimilate excess nutrients. Because their use is so new, only limited research has been …
