Beneath The Glass Ceiling : What Causes Some Qualified Female Educators To Remain In The Classroom While Others Obtain Leadership Roles?, Allison J. Jordan
Beneath The Glass Ceiling : What Causes Some Qualified Female Educators To Remain In The Classroom While Others Obtain Leadership Roles?, Allison J. Jordan
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
There is a dispoportionate number of female administrators in relation to the number of female-helmed classrooms in the United States. Jordan tackles the issue of gender in educational leadership. While the removal of legal and social barriers to administrative leadership in the twentieth century may have seemed to point the way toward a female-dominated leadership structure, she finds that female educational leaders are underrepresented at all levels. The study focused on Central Virginia. Jordan tried to uncover the common themes among female educators, including what differences existed between qualified classroom teachers and women who held positions of educational leadership.

Experiences Of Ex-Ex-Gay Individuals In Sexual Reorientation Therapy: Reasons For Seeking Treatment, Perceived Helpfulness And Harmfulness Of Treatment, And Post-Treatment Identification, Annesa Flentje, Nicholas C. Heck, Bryan N. Cochran
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Therapy meant to change someone’s sexual orientation, or reorientation therapy, is still in practice despite statements from the major mental health organizations of its potential for harm. This qualitative study used an inductive content analysis strategy (Patton, 2002) to examine the experiences of thirty-eight individuals (31 males and seven females) who have been through a total of 113 episodes of reorientation therapy and currently identify as gay or lesbian. Religious beliefs were frequently cited as the reason for seeking reorientation therapy. Frequently endorsed themes of helpful components of reorientation therapy included connecting with others and feeling accepted. Harmful aspects of …

Design Considerations For Visually-Aided Discussion Prompts: Emphasizing Mathematical Reasoning In Teacher Education, Anne Marie S. Marshall, Kadian M. Callahan
Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators
The availability and familiarity of online discussion tools create new instructional options that teacher educators can use to foster prospective teachers’ understanding of mathematics. In particular, online discussion blogs provide an avenue through which teacher educators can press prospective teachers to explore mathematical concepts and share their mathematical reasoning with peers. Furthermore, by incorporating visual stimulations as a design component of these discussion blogs, prospective teachers can make sense of and respond to others’ ideas about mathematical concepts with greater clarity. This paper shares preliminary findings of a research study that examined the extent to which the design of a …
Broken At Both Ends: The Need To Reconnect Energy And Environment, Steven Ferrey
Broken At Both Ends: The Need To Reconnect Energy And Environment, Steven Ferrey
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
In the post-industrial economy, key national environmental laws and energy regulations can impose contradictory demands, pursuant to which it is impossible to comply with both. Do regulated companies follow orders to generate essential energy supply or adhere to environmental emissions limits or orders not to generate? The United States Congress and federal agencies have each ignored creating a critical joinder of national policy, and there is no judicial precedent to resolve this conflict. The conflict between energy and environmental regulation creates a new constitutional challenge of essential first impression.
The Margin Of Appreciation In International Investment Law, Julian Arato
The Margin Of Appreciation In International Investment Law, Julian Arato
Articles
Investment treaties tend to say nothing, or only very little, about the appropriate standard of review for arbitrating disputes between sovereign states and foreign investors. Most treaties do not address whether states should be afforded any deference in their own assessment of their treaty obligations. Neither do they specify the converse, that state action must be strictly reviewed. They are simply silent – and their silence has been interpreted in innumerable ways by different tribunals. This interpretive chaos has generated calls for a unified approach – one that would resolve the uncertain and fragmented status quo, while being sufficiently flexible …

Cytosolic Carboxypeptidase 5 And Cilia Development In Zebrafish, Philip E. Giddings Iv
Cytosolic Carboxypeptidase 5 And Cilia Development In Zebrafish, Philip E. Giddings Iv
Honors Theses
My research project is focused around a specific gene - cytosolic carboxypeptidase 5 (CCP5). Previous research suggests that the CCP5 gene is essential for the modification of alpha-tubulin which is necessary for normal growth of cilia in the olfactory pit of zebrafish. Using a CCP5-MO to knockdown the gene I was able to compare the resulting phenotype to that of a control specimen in order to determine any visible differences with respect to cilia morphology. Through analysis by scanning electron miscroscopy I wasw able to that cilia morphology did appear to be effected by the knockdown of CCP5. However, similar …
The Role Of Sabbath-Keeping, Christian Internalization, Need Satisfaction, And Parental Environment In Well-Being, Paola S. Caceres
The Role Of Sabbath-Keeping, Christian Internalization, Need Satisfaction, And Parental Environment In Well-Being, Paola S. Caceres
Honors Theses
Identifying which specific religious practices promote religious internalization is crucial in understanding the relationship between practice and well-being. The current study employs surveys along with an episodic memory recall task to examine whether the relationship between Sabbath-keeping internalization and well-being is mediated by Christian religious internalization, parental environment, and basic need satisfaction as outlined in Self-Determination Theory. Our mediation analysis results demonstrate a large mediation effect size for daily basic needs satisfaction (autonomy, competence, and autonomy) on the relationship between internalization of Sabbath-keeping and well-being. Small to medium effect sizes were found for a general measure of Christian internalization and …
The Effects Of "Stress Inoculation" On Anxiety-Related Behaviors In A Rodent Model, Rebecca Ruth Clouse
The Effects Of "Stress Inoculation" On Anxiety-Related Behaviors In A Rodent Model, Rebecca Ruth Clouse
Master's Theses
Problem. Humans may face psychological stressors in their everyday life due to their ability to contemplate future events. While long-term stress exposure may be detrimental to health, this study examines the possibility that exposure to unpredictable/controllable, moderate stress may cause resilience against future stressors. This is referred to as the "stress inoculation hypothesis." The effects of unpredictable/controllable stress can be illustrated as a rightward shift in an inverted U-shaped curve, where optimal performance (the top of the curve) can be maintained at higher stress levels. -- Method. Thirty-three male Sprague-Dawley rats were tested on the elevated-plus maze (EPM) for trait …

Constructing Short Fiction: The Creative Writing Process, Mark Joslin
Honors Theses
This project explores a creative fiction writer's process through writing four pieces of short fiction. Documenting his progress along the way, the writer uses peer-revision to refine his work. This method is intended to improve early drafts by both interacting with readers and utilizing the examples of well-know authors. The writer's stories will be considered successful if their plot moves at a bright pace, if the characters and setting are authentic, and if they come to a satisfying conclusion. The project will consist of these stories and an accompanying writer's notebook, which examines revisions representative of a move to good …

This paper demonstrates the acquisition of advanced circuit board performance parameters from breakaway test coupons measured right at the PCB fabricator. We show how to acquire S-parameter and TDR-based measurements up to 30 GHz using robust probes and test coupon fixtures. The measurements provide pass/fail tests for process control and they provide model parameters as feedback to improve channel design. By way of example, we demonstrate measurements of several representative test coupons, perform total loss tests, such as SET2DIL, and extract design parameters that can be used to improve EDA channel models. We also demonstrate measurement and tests of impedance …
Egg Cannibalism In A Gull Colony Increases With Sea Surface Temperature, Lynelle M. Weldon, Shandelle M. Henson, James Hayward, Brianna G. Payne, Libby C. Megna, Andre E. Moncrieff
Egg Cannibalism In A Gull Colony Increases With Sea Surface Temperature, Lynelle M. Weldon, Shandelle M. Henson, James Hayward, Brianna G. Payne, Libby C. Megna, Andre E. Moncrieff
Faculty Publications
Cannibalism occurs regularly across a broad range of taxa with a variety of ecological and evolutionary consequences. Rises in sea surface temperature (SST) have been linked to increased cannibalism in some species, including polar bears (Ursus maritimus), Peruvian anchovy (Engraulis ringens), and Peruvian hake (Merluccius gayi peruanus), and might be expected in birds that depend on marine food webs for sustenance. Increased SSTs are associated with lowered ocean thermoclines and weakened upwellings. These changes, in turn, lead to decreased productivity in surface water and movement of surviving forage fish to deeper water, thereby food-stressing surface feeders such as gulls, diminishing …
Te Amo Mujer: A Film, Ivan Ruiz
Te Amo Mujer: A Film, Ivan Ruiz
Honors Theses
Te Amo Mujer is a documentary film project exploring the story of Don Gustavo Jimenez, an old man who lives in a small village in the south of Mexico, and the grandfather of the filmmaker. The film seeks to use the narrative of Don Gustavo to explore the question of why we live where we live. The thesis of the film - or more accurately the suggestion, as the film is a very personal work - is that we live where we do, and how we do, out of love for the people that are closest to us.
Effects Of Plastic Pollution Density On The Crawling Rates Of Hawksbill Hatchlings In Utila, Honduras, Kyungje Sung
Effects Of Plastic Pollution Density On The Crawling Rates Of Hawksbill Hatchlings In Utila, Honduras, Kyungje Sung
Honors Theses
The hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is a critically endangered species. Hence, various conservation efforts by groups such as ProTECTOR are taking place to stabilize its population. To support such efforts, my study focused on the turtle population in and around the island of Utila, Honduras. Specifically, I sought to determine if various densities of plastic pollution had an effect on crawling times during the migration of hawksbill turtle hatchlings from nest to water. A reduction in crawling time could increase predation time and cause the hatchling to expend additional energy before they reach the ocean. We constructed four experimental corridors …
Processing Load And Biopotentials: An Evaluation Of A Consumer Electroencephalogram (Eeg), Kristen M. Bishop
Processing Load And Biopotentials: An Evaluation Of A Consumer Electroencephalogram (Eeg), Kristen M. Bishop
Honors Theses
The general public is extremely interested in mental training and the use of brain imaging to study the mind. One device that combines the two and is currently on the market for consumers is a single channel EEG band produced by NeuroSky which claims to measure concentration. However, the claim that they have developed a single channel measure of concentration and meditation have not been tested. EEG power is related to cognitive memory and performance, which both contribute to concentration. In addition to EEG waves, pupil size is a reliable physiological index of processing load and concentration. The first purpose …
The Diversity Of Color: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Color Symbolism, Erica L. Bradfield
The Diversity Of Color: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Color Symbolism, Erica L. Bradfield
Honors Theses
Does a person's perception of color symbolism depend on their cultural geographic origin? As color is often connected to different cultural elements, this study is intended as a contribution to advancing cross-cultural understanding in a globalizing world. The hypothesis states that the color perceived to be symbolic of various life events such as weddings, births, and deaths as well as emotions such s happiness or sadness, will vary based on a person's cultural geographic origin. Using eleven basic color terms as determined by Berlin and Kay (196), subjects' perceptions of color symbolism was explored through responses to an online survey …
The Relationship Between Student Motivation, Resilience, And Parental Environment, Eliana Iller
The Relationship Between Student Motivation, Resilience, And Parental Environment, Eliana Iller
Honors Theses
Does parental environment influence the relationship between resilience and student motivation for university students? The goal of this research is to better understand how student motivation and resilience are related to parental environment, distinguishing between parental involvement and parental conflict. Data was taken from 235 Andrews University students via online survey. The hypotheses were partially supported that parental conflict would be positively correlated to motivation and resilience while parental conflict was negatively correlated. The strongest correlation was found between resilience and identified academic motivation. Mediation analyses showed small to moderated effect sizes of parental conflict and parental involvement on this …
Hcnabc Operon Transcription Of Pseudomonas Putida Under Varying Iron And Oxygen Concentrations And Culture Age, Christine Lee
Hcnabc Operon Transcription Of Pseudomonas Putida Under Varying Iron And Oxygen Concentrations And Culture Age, Christine Lee
Honors Theses
The species Pseudomonas putida produces hydrogen cyanide (HCN) through the transcription of the hcnABC operon. Previous research by Myrna Biswas (2010) demonstrated that microaerobic +FeCl3 cultures had the greatest HCN production, but the effects of varying iron and oxygen levels on HCN production were unclear. Isaac Kim (2011) assessed HCN production of P. putida in sand versus soil using different iron concentrations and found that iron was necessary for HCN production. The purpose of this experiment was to determine how the hcnABC operon is affected by varying levels of iron and oxygen, and the age of bacteria culture. To test …
The Effect Of Celite Formulated Rhizobium Rubi At3-4rs/6 And Tryptophan On Velvetleaf Plant Growth, Jonathon Ahn
The Effect Of Celite Formulated Rhizobium Rubi At3-4rs/6 And Tryptophan On Velvetleaf Plant Growth, Jonathon Ahn
Honors Theses
Rhizobium rubi AT3-4RS/6 and tryptophan may be useful in replacing chemical herbicides as biological control agents (Kennedy et al., 1990). Previous research has shown that Rhizobium rubi AT3-4RS/6 produces IAA-like compounds that are deleterious to weed growth. In this project R. rubi AT3-4RS/6 will be formulated in Celite, a granular, diatomaceous earth carrier. The purpose of this research is to analyze if tryptophan influences R. rubi AT3-4RS/6 populations in the velveltleaf rhizosphere, and if this colonization is associated with reduced root weight and shoot length. The experiment design consists of five soil treatments (bacteria+tryptophan+celite, tryptophan+celite, bacteria+celite, celite alone, and soil …
Evolution Over Revolution: A Generic Criticism Of The Muscle Car Genre, John C. Irvine
Evolution Over Revolution: A Generic Criticism Of The Muscle Car Genre, John C. Irvine
Honors Theses
The term muscle car appears to have atrophied to an automotive legend, or simply a marketing term synonymous with any powerful four seat sedan apart from heritage or point of origin. Through generic critical analysis, this thesis paper seeks to quantify the problematic identity of the muscle car. By use of transparent and theoretically consistent analytic procedures, this paper seeks to identify the rhetorical principles behind the genre's characteristic form, thereby producing a qualitative framework. This framework will then be utilized as a tool to qualitatively assess modern vehicles that identify as muscle cars, in order to determine whether they …
Factors Affecting Phonotaxis In Male House Crickets, Acheta Domesticus, Erik Thordarson
Factors Affecting Phonotaxis In Male House Crickets, Acheta Domesticus, Erik Thordarson
Honors Theses
This research addresses some of the possible factors that affect male Acheta domesticus phonotactic responses to calls of males of the same species. The study examines cricket age and social interaction with females as possible factors affecting this behavior. Through Friedman rank test analysis, the study attempts to demonstrate a link between these factors and the responsiveness of the male crickets in the study. As the crickets aged, they responded to a wider ranges of syllable periods, which may imply that they follow a similar pattern of decreasing selectivity in their response with age as their female counterparts. A Friedman's …
A Republic 'On Earth As It Is In Heaven': The Freedom Of The Fall In Paradise Lost And His Dark Materials, Jordan Arellano
A Republic 'On Earth As It Is In Heaven': The Freedom Of The Fall In Paradise Lost And His Dark Materials, Jordan Arellano
Honors Theses
The epic poem Paradise Lost (1667, 74) retells the Biblical creation story through the blind eyes of the Christian political-poet John Milton. Three hundred years later, Milton's work is recast by the atheist children's and fantasy novelist Philip Pullman in the His Dark Materials trilogy (1995, 97, 2000). Although one might assume that these two writers' perspectives would contradict one another, Pullman's adaptation - though a perverted story of the Fall - still pursues the same goal as Milton's by imagining a new and better social structure. And not only do they share that goal, but they also explore the …

A Composition Project: An Original 12-Tone Fugue Modeled After J. S. Bach's Bwv 847, Ilana Joyce Cady
Honors Theses
A prominent feature among great composers is they often attempt to expand the boundaries of expectation and strive to discover fresh, new, and innovative styles. Throughout the musical periods, composers have established standard compositional forms; among these processes is the fugue. The specific goal of this project is to explore the compositional techniques of the 12-tone system developed by Arnold Schoenberg in 1921, and apply these techniques to fugal writing. In this process I am taking Bach’s fugue, BWV 847, and using it as a blueprint for my original 12-tone fugue. I follow the same overarching structural pattern of BWV …
Connection And Isolation, Lynda Lee
Connection And Isolation, Lynda Lee
Honors Theses
As one of the most recurrent subjects of visual art, the human form as been an important means of communicating human experiences and expressing the philosophical and scientific thoughts of a society. During the early 20th century, artists in Europe began distorting and abstracting the human figure in ways that were unprecedented and often times visually unsettling to emphasize its withdrawn and isolated condition while also suggesting a sense of fragility and vulnerability. Although there are various forms of isolation that can result from a number of different causes, my project explores the concept of social isolation brought about by …
