Physical Therapy And Depression: A Pilot Study On Screening For Depressive Symptoms, Allison Hatten

Honors Theses

The current paper presents a pilot study of mental health screening in a physical therapy clinic. It aimed to determine the feasibility of integrating simple, scientifically-sound methods of capturing symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, sleep patterns, and physical pain. A total of 10 patients recruited from University of Mississippi Physical Therapy Clinic participated in the study. Participants were given the DASS-21 with additional questions on pain ratings, hours ofsleep, and reason for physical therapy. The measure was administered twice with a three-week interval of time in between. Data were analyzed by conducting individual ttests for change in the variables of …

The Flash Crash: An Examination Of Shareholder Wealth And Market Quality, Thomas J. Boulton, Marcus V. Braga-Alves, Manoj Kulchania Jan 2014

The Flash Crash: An Examination Of Shareholder Wealth And Market Quality, Thomas J. Boulton, Marcus V. Braga-Alves, Manoj Kulchania

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We investigate stock returns, market quality, and options market activity around the flash crash of May 6, 2010. Abnormal returns are negative on the day of and the day after the flash crash for stocks that had trades that executed during the crash subsequently cancelled by either Nasdaq or NYSE Arca. Consistent with studies that suggest that other sources of liquidity withdrew from the markets during the flash crash, we find that the fraction of trades executed by the NYSE increases during this volatile period. Market quality deteriorates following the flash crash as bid-ask spreads increase and quote depths decrease. …

The Sluggs Survey: New Evidence For A Tidal Interaction Between The Early Type Galaxies Ngc 4365 And Ngc 4342, C. Blom, D. Forbes, C. Foster, Aaron Romanowsky, J. Brodie

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We present new imaging and spectral data for globular clusters (GCs) around NGC 4365 and NGC 4342. NGC 4342 is a compact, X-ray luminous S0 galaxy with an unusually massive central black hole. NGC 4365 is another atypical galaxy that dominates the W' group of which NGC 4342 is a member. Using imaging from the MegaCam instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) we identify a stream of GCs between the two galaxies and extending beyond NGC 4342. The stream of GCs is spatially coincident with a stream/plume of stars previously identified. We find that the photometric colours of the stream …

Dynamic Feature Extraction And User Classification Using Touchanalytics™, Clay Mcleod Jan 2014

Dynamic Feature Extraction And User Classification Using Touchanalytics™, Clay Mcleod

Honors Theses

Security systems for modern computing devices suffer from a multitude of weaknesses that can render users helpless against an attack on their system. Various attempts at incorporating human characteristics into security systems have achieved varying levels of success in improving security. In this paper, we study the usefulness of TouchAnalytics™ - a second-level security system that attempts to authenticate a user based on touch-data gathered from an interaction with the device. Through the use of machine learning algorithms, we developed a system that is successful at au- thenticating users, achieving under 0.05% False Authentication Rate (FAR). We conclude that the …

#Livetweetmylecture: A Look At Note-Taking Consolidation, Retention, And Test Performance In Students Using Twitter Vs. Traditional Typed Notes, Samra B. Ward

Honors Theses

This study investigated how different types of note-taking affect college students' retention of classroom material. In particular, this study looked at whether live-tweeting lecture material would result in better retention of the material presented in a lecture than traditional note-taking on a laptop. It was hypothesized that students who took notes via live-tweeting would have comparable results to those who took notes in the traditional computer format. In addition, it was also hypothesized that a person's familiarity with Twitter would likely affect his or her ability to use Twitter as an educational tool. In order to test this hypothesis, participants …

School Leaders' Perceptions Of Caribbean Students' English Language Needs, Erica Pike Jan 2014

School Leaders' Perceptions Of Caribbean Students' English Language Needs, Erica Pike

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Although British West Indian Caribbean (BWIC) immigrant students are considered to be English speaking students by U.S. public schools, many of them speak other languages. These students experience hardships and have unique remediation needs that many schools are not providing. The conceptual frameworks that guided this case study were sociocultural theory, acculturation theory, and leadership theory. These theories postulate that culture influences learning, second language acquisition is linked to adapting to a new culture, and leadership is important to implement system-wide changes. Qualitative data included interviews with 6 teachers and 3 administrators who work closely with BWIC students, New York …

Can We Institute Medical Trust? An Exploratory Case Study Of Patient-Staff Relations At A Community Health Center In The Mississippi Delta, Emma L. Willoughby Jan 2014

Can We Institute Medical Trust? An Exploratory Case Study Of Patient-Staff Relations At A Community Health Center In The Mississippi Delta, Emma L. Willoughby

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to use the concept of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model and the case of the community health center (CHC) to explore social interaction and trust between patients and medical providers. While the PCMH model is being championed as revolutionizing and improving healthcare delivery, little evidence has yet to support the formation of basic social and health mechanisms, such as trust, that would result in positive health outcomes. The model's guidelines focus more on healthcare organization and information technology than developing interpersonal relationships and adapting services to meet the specific needs of diverse populations. …

Energy Drinks And Caffeine: The Science Behind The Billion- Dollar Industry, Eric Villarreal Jan 2014

Energy Drinks And Caffeine: The Science Behind The Billion- Dollar Industry, Eric Villarreal

Honors Theses

Ask any college student how he or she gets through long study sessions, all-nighters, and the always grueling finals week and he or she will most likely reference some caffeine-containing beverage as the antidote, with energy drinks becoming an ever increasing option. The effects, both physiological and psychological, of the ingredients in energy drinks (caffeine and, to a lesser degree, glucose) dictate their usefulness to consumers. A review of the available research literature from http://scholar.google.com using the following keywords: caffeine, energy drink, Red Bull, caffeinated beverage, caffeine drink, energy drink industry, energy drink company, and glucose yielded the references that …

Ncaa At The Crossroads: How O'Bannon V. Ncaa Could Change College Sports, Evan Brewster Jan 2014

Ncaa At The Crossroads: How O'Bannon V. Ncaa Could Change College Sports, Evan Brewster

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the current model of American college athletics and how football and basketball, specifically, have become extremely commercialized. This piece begins with an analysis of the current state of amateur college athletics and the changes that have taken place recently. O'Bannon v. NCAA signifies the one of the most recent challenges to NCAA power, attempting to change the unjust system that requires student-athletes to remain amateur while universities profit off the athletic contests. An evaluation of previous legal challenges to the NCAA help frame an assessment of the case itself thus far. To conclude, cases like O'Bannon and …

Octocoral Physiology: Calcium Carbonate Composition And The Effect Of Thermal Stress On Enzyme Activity, Hadley Pearson Jan 2014

Octocoral Physiology: Calcium Carbonate Composition And The Effect Of Thermal Stress On Enzyme Activity, Hadley Pearson

Honors Theses

Octocorals are a diverse group of organisms, and within the Caribbean they contribute substantially to coral-reef cover. In this thesis, two different studies performed on these marine organisms are detailed. In Section I, the percent calcium carbonate composition of several species was analyzed. Octocorals produce sclerites: calcium carbonate crystals that serve as the skeletal elements of the coral. Determining the percent calcium carbonate composition of eight Caribbean octocoral species can give comparative insight into the form and function in these animals. This study also offers clues about potential evolutionary tradeoffs between rigidity and flexibility, as well as establishes some basic …

Passive Sampling For Quality Monitoring Of Irish Marine Waters, Philip White Jan 2014

Passive Sampling For Quality Monitoring Of Irish Marine Waters, Philip White

Doctoral

This study details the steps involved in fabrication, deployment and retrieval of mainly polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) passive sampling devices deployed in a number of locations in and around Ireland in an attempt to derive dissolved water concentrations of contaminants in-situ. PDMS samplers were initially deployed in the Burrishoole catchment, Co. Mayo in conjunction with the collection of biological tissues and sediment to investigate the source of elevated dioxins in the catchment. Passive samplers were used to generate dissolved water concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and also to successfully screen for the presence of dioxins in the water column. The …

Ethnic Variation In Breastfeeding And Complementary Feeding In The Republic Of Ireland, Patricia Castro, Richard Layte, John Kearney Jan 2014

Ethnic Variation In Breastfeeding And Complementary Feeding In The Republic Of Ireland, Patricia Castro, Richard Layte, John Kearney

Articles

Early nutrition plays a pivotal role in long-term health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life, with the gradual introduction of solids after this period. However, studies in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) have shown poor compliance with guidelines. The ROI continues to have one of the lowest breastfeeding rates worldwide. Our objective was to analyse differences in breastfeeding and complimentary feeding behaviours between Irish and non-Irish mothers residing in the ROI, as well as the role of acculturation on these behaviours, using the national longitudinal study, Growing Up in Ireland (GUI). …

Investigation Of The Cellular And Molecular Mechanisms Of Radiation-Induced Bystander Effects, Hayley Furlong Jan 2014

Investigation Of The Cellular And Molecular Mechanisms Of Radiation-Induced Bystander Effects, Hayley Furlong

Doctoral

The overall aim of this study was to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in radiation-induced bystander effects in HaCaT cells, predominantly at low-doses of irradiation. They do not follow the original dose-response theory and exhibit a unique cascade of signalling events, which are under intense investigation for radiation risk purposes. An in vitro system was first used to observe the bystander effect, comparing two cell viability assays while measuring apoptotic cell death in these known reporter HaCaT cells and established the most sensitive assay for bystander responses Downstream bystander signalling events were then investigated through gene expression studies …

Low-Toxicity Diacetone Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer For Applications In Holography, Dervil Cody

Doctoral

Photopolymers are fast becoming one of the most popular holographic recording media due to their suitability for a wide range of holographic applications, such as sensors, diffractive optics and data storage. The majority of the investigated water-soluble holographic photopolymers are Acrylamide (AA) based. However, the toxic and carcinogenic nature of AA is a growing concern. In order for photopolymer recording media to be a viable option for holographic applications, efforts must be made to remove any occupational and environmental hazards involved in large-scale material development and device fabrication. The main objective of the work presented here is the development and …

The Eureka Myth: Creators, Innovators, And Everyday Intellectual Property, Jessica Silbey Jan 2014

The Eureka Myth: Creators, Innovators, And Everyday Intellectual Property, Jessica Silbey

Books

Are innovation and creativity helped or hindered by our intellectual property laws? In the two hundred plus years since the Constitution enshrined protections for those who create and innovate, we're still debating the merits of IP laws and whether or not they actually work as intended. Artists, scientists, businesses, and the lawyers who serve them, as well as the Americans who benefit from their creations all still wonder: what facilitates innovation and creativity in our digital age? And what role, if any, do our intellectual property laws play in the growth of innovation and creativity in the United States?

Incentivizing …

Act, Values, And Christian Psychology: A Response To Sisemore, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2014

Act, Values, And Christian Psychology: A Response To Sisemore, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

“Amen, brother” is probably too brief a response for an academic journal, but it would be a fitting summary for my observations of Sisemore’s (2015) article, “Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: A Christian Translation.” Sisemore demonstrates both a good understanding of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Christian wisdom. Rather than repeating all our points of agreement, I limit my observations to two anecdotes about ACT and Christianity, a few positive reflections regarding Sisemore’s article, and two suggestions for further translation work.
