Ciclos De Acaparamiento De Tierras En Centroamérica: Un Argumento A Favor De Historizar Y Un Estudio De Caso Del Bajo Aguán, Honduras, Marc Edelman, Andrés León Jan 2014

Ciclos De Acaparamiento De Tierras En Centroamérica: Un Argumento A Favor De Historizar Y Un Estudio De Caso Del Bajo Aguán, Honduras, Marc Edelman, Andrés León

Publications and Research

Total Voice Leading, Joseph N. Straus Jan 2014

Total Voice Leading, Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

The total voice leading between sets X and Y is defined as the complete collection of ordered pc intervals formed between the pcs in X and the pcs in Y. These interval multisets (imultisets) describe the sonic signature of the motion from X to Y, and they always have the property of transpositional combination. In some cases, the same total voice leading may be produced by different pairs of X and Y (Cohn 1988 refers to this as “multiple parentage”). In such cases, the total voice leading may remain the same even though the generating chords differ.

Achievement Outcomes Of Sixth-Grade Students With A Military Parent Deployed To A War Zone Or A Military Parent Not Deployed Compared To Same School Students Whose Parents Have No Military Affiliation, Robert L. Ingram Iii Jan 2014

Achievement Outcomes Of Sixth-Grade Students With A Military Parent Deployed To A War Zone Or A Military Parent Not Deployed Compared To Same School Students Whose Parents Have No Military Affiliation, Robert L. Ingram Iii

Student Work

The need for accurate information about the achievement of students whose military parents are deployed to a war zone or whose military parents are eligible although not currently deployed to a war zone is important in order to ensure that we are providing for the educational wellbeing of these children as their parents defend our nations freedoms. The purpose of this posttest-only comparative efficacy study was to determine the achievement outcomes of sixth-grade students with a military parent deployed to a war zone (n = 10) or sixth-grade students with a military parent not deployed to a war zone (n …

Hacia Una Anatomía Del Textum: Corporalidad Y Discurso En El Cine Contemporáneo Argentino., Guillermo Abel Severiche Jan 2014

Hacia Una Anatomía Del Textum: Corporalidad Y Discurso En El Cine Contemporáneo Argentino., Guillermo Abel Severiche

LSU Master's Theses

Focal Stacking Of Microscopic Images Using Modified Harris Corner Response Measure, Madhu Sudan Sigdel Jan 2014

Focal Stacking Of Microscopic Images Using Modified Harris Corner Response Measure, Madhu Sudan Sigdel

Theses

Automated image analysis of microscopic images such as protein crystallization images and cellular images is one of the important research areas. For proper analysis of the microscopic images, it is necessary to have images where all objects are in good focus. If objects in a scene (or specimen) appear at different depths with respect to the camera's focal point, objects outside the depth of field usually appear blurred. It is not possible to get all objects in focus simultaneously by changing the focal point of a lens of camera. Therefore, scientists capture a collection of images with different depths of …

Twisting Algorithm For Controlling F-16 Aircraft With Performance Margins Identification, Akshay Kulkarni Jan 2014

Twisting Algorithm For Controlling F-16 Aircraft With Performance Margins Identification, Akshay Kulkarni

Theses

A Twisting algorithm based second order sliding mode controller is designed for tracking of command angles for nonlinear flight dynamics of an F-16 aircraft, before and after the battle damages. The high frequency switching controller is designed in terms of control derivative so that the actual control function is continuous. The practical robustness performance margins are identified in terms of maximal additional gain (Practical Gain Margin) and phase lag (Practical Phase Margin) added to the frequency characteristic of the linear part of the open loop system that yield acceptable loss of command angle tracking performance in terms of admissible parameters …

Pickets, Politics, Perdition, And Perspectives : The 1934 Textile Strike In North Alabama, Nathan Walker Raby Jan 2014

Pickets, Politics, Perdition, And Perspectives : The 1934 Textile Strike In North Alabama, Nathan Walker Raby

Theses

The 1934 textile strike was the result of presidential rhetoric as millworkers believed that Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal was going to improve their workplace and economic conditions. The corporatism of the First New Deal, however, demonstrated that the newly formed National Recovery Administration and its leader Hugh S. Johnson allowed mill owners and executives the ability to regulate and control their mills by influencing how industry codes were written. The workers' strike was an effort to reclaim their own dignity and the promises from Roosevelt of a New Deal for Americans. The strike began in North Alabama in July …

An Evaluation Of A Passively Cooled Cylindrical Spectrometer Array In Lunar Orbit, Jason Waggoner

Theses

This thesis evaluated a passively cooled cylindrical spectrometer array in lunar orbit characterizing the thermal response to provide context for decision-making to scientists and engineers. To provide perspective on thermal issues and controls of space science instruments, a background search of historical lunar missions is provided. Next, a trial science mission is designed and analyzed which brings together the elements of the background search, lunar orbit environment and passive cooling. The proposed Lunar Occultation Observer astrophysics mission which will utilize the moon for occultation in order to locate, identify and map deep space high-energy sources was chosen as the trial …

Understanding The Components Of Online Identity Disclosure : Trust And Risk, Casey Thomas Jan 2014

Understanding The Components Of Online Identity Disclosure : Trust And Risk, Casey Thomas

Theses

Disclosure of personal information online has been associated with identity theft. Effective warnings can potentially decrease identity theft by decreasing personal information disclosed online. The present experiment explored whether disposition to trust, trust beliefs in the warning, risk perceptions, perceived ease of use of the website, and the source of the warning could affect disclosure of personal information online. The model is unique to the literature because it has multidimensional constructs of trust and multifaceted constructs of risk that may explain disclosure as an online behavior. The model was tested using a 2 (identity: email address and driver's license) x …

Genetic Mechanisms Underlying The Pathogenicity Of Cold-Stressed Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium In Cultured Intestinal Epithelial Cells, J. Shah, P. T. Desai, B. C. Weimer Jan 2014

Genetic Mechanisms Underlying The Pathogenicity Of Cold-Stressed Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium In Cultured Intestinal Epithelial Cells, J. Shah, P. T. Desai, B. C. Weimer

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Salmonella encounters various stresses in the environment and in the host during infection. The effects of cold (5 C, 48 h), peroxide (5 mM H2O2, 5 h) and acid stress (pH 4.0, 90 min) were tested on pathogenicity of Salmonella. Prior exposure of Salmonella to cold stress significantly (P < 0.05) increased adhesion and invasion of cultured intestinal epithelial (Caco-2) cells. This increased Salmonella-host cell association was also correlated with significant induction of several virulence-associated genes, implying an increased potential of cold-stressed Salmonella to cause an infection. In Caco-2 cells infected with cold-stressed Salmonella, genes involved in the electron transfer chain were significantly induced, but no simultaneous significant increase in expression of antioxidant genes that neutralize the effect of superoxide radicals or reactive oxygen species was observed. Increased production of caspase 9 and caspase 3/7 was confirmed during host cell infection with cold-stressed Salmonella. Further, a prophage gene, STM2699, induced in cold-stressed Salmonella and a spectrin gene, SPTAN1, induced in Salmonella-infected intestinal epithelial cells were found to have a significant contribution in increased adhesion and invasion of cold-stressed Salmonella in epithelial cells.

Genome -Scale Reconstruction Of Metabolic Networks Of Lactobacillus Casei Atcc 334 And 12a, Elena Vinay-Lara, Joshua J. Hamilton, Buffy Stahl, Jeff Broadbent, Jennifer L. Reed, James L. Steele Jan 2014

Genome -Scale Reconstruction Of Metabolic Networks Of Lactobacillus Casei Atcc 334 And 12a, Elena Vinay-Lara, Joshua J. Hamilton, Buffy Stahl, Jeff Broadbent, Jennifer L. Reed, James L. Steele

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Lactobacillus casei strains are widely used in industry and the utility of this organism in these industrial applications is straindependent. Hence, tools capable of predicting strain specific phenotypes would have utility in the selection of strains forspecific industrial processes. Genome-scale metabolic models can be utilized to better understand genotype-phenotyperelationships and to compare different organisms. To assist in the selection and development of strains with enhancedindustrial utility, genome-scale models for L. casei ATCC 334, a well characterized strain, and strain 12A, a corn silage isolate, were constructed. Draft models were generated from RAST genome annotations using the Model SEED database and refined …

Coalition Formation In A Legislative Voting Game, Nels Christiansen, Sotiris Georganas, John H. Kagel Jan 2014

Coalition Formation In A Legislative Voting Game, Nels Christiansen, Sotiris Georganas, John H. Kagel

Economics Faculty Research

We experimentally investigate the Jackson and Moselle (2002) model where legislators bargain over policy proposals and the allocation of private goods. Key comparative static predictions of the model hold with the introduction of private goods, including "strange bedfellow" coalitions. Private goods help to secure legislative compromise and increase the likelihood of proposals passing, an outcome not predicted by the theory but a staple of the applied political economy literature. Coalition formation is better characterized by an "efficient equal split" between coalition partners than the subgame perfect equilibrium prediction, which has implications for stable political party formation.

Adam Smith And Entangled Political Economy, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2014

Adam Smith And Entangled Political Economy, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

Entangled Political Economy, the idea that the economy and the polity are a nexus of interrelations often with unplanned outcomes, is close to the concept of economics that Adam Smith presents, a concept which was not shaped by strict discipline barriers. I show that Adam Smith analyzes the nature and causes of the wealth of nations by analyzing the interaction of the economy with politics, ethics, and the law. In particular, Smith presents each of these systems as a network of relations with all the other systems: the economy is entangled not just with the polity, but also with other …

"Oppressed With My Own Sensations": The Histories Of Some Of The Penitents And Principled Piety, Robin Runia Jan 2014

"Oppressed With My Own Sensations": The Histories Of Some Of The Penitents And Principled Piety, Robin Runia

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Many scholars have observed the sentimentalization of the prostitute throughout the eighteenth century, and while this sentimentalization and its connection to the culture of sensibility have been compellingly theorized, the penitent prostitute's relationship to emotion, sensation, and piety has not been fully developed. The Histories of Some of the Penitents in the Magdalen House (1760) constructs an anxious equivalency between emotion and sensation, reflecting the vexed nature of sentimental discourse-the difficulty of distinguishing clearly between sensibility and sensuality. Examining this slippage reveals anxieties about women's abilities to accurately interpret and act upon the sensations of their bodies and their corresponding …

The Eighteenth-Century Novel And The Secularization Of Ethics: Book Review, Mary Ann Rooks Jan 2014

The Eighteenth-Century Novel And The Secularization Of Ethics: Book Review, Mary Ann Rooks

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

For many reasons-including religious reforms and controversies, doubts about the effectiveness of the clergy, the development of scientific advancements and Enlightenment ideologies, and disruptions of class and gender expectations coinciding with the emergence of a consumer economy-it is easy to imagine writers and readers in the eighteenth century searching for a locus of moral authority. The frequency of claims to "entertain and instruct;' a mantra of eighteenth-century prose fiction, indicates a need felt by many authors to address the suspected dangers of novel reading and defend the legitimacy-in part_icular the moral efficacy-of this emergent genre. In The Eighteenth-Century Novel and …

Preface, Brett C. Mcinelly Jan 2014

Preface, Brett C. Mcinelly

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

The first five articles in this volume represent a special section devoted to Eastern and Middle Eastern religions during the Enlightenment. These articles do not so much explore these religions on their own terms as consider how Western thinkers and writers responded to Buddhism, Islam, and other non-European religions; they examine how the religious and philosophical thought of the Far and Middle East, or at least the ways Western writers represented this thought, informed Enlightenment ideas and European religious, cultural, and textual practices. As they point out, non-Western religions often served as a lens through which individuals during the long …

An Introduction To Ignaz Edler Von Born And His Article "Concerning The Mysteries Of The Egyptians", Hans-Wilhelm Kelling

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Although well known during his own lifetime as a scientist, author, and promoter of Enlightenment ideals, Ignaz Edler von Born also made a significant impact in his less public life as a Freemason. In 1784 he was both Meister vom Stuhl of the Masonic Lodge "Zur wahren Eintracht" and editor in chief of the Journal fur Freymaurer, published quarterly for just three years by Christian Friedrich Wappler in Vienna. In its very first issue, Born, under the initials I.v.B.M.v.St., Ignaz von Born, Meister vom Stuhl, contributed an article important to the Freemasons titled "Ueber die Mysterien der Aegyptier:" In …

Mormonism And Intellectual Freedom, Rick Anderson Jan 2014

Mormonism And Intellectual Freedom, Rick Anderson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

To many outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (and to some of its members), the Church’s teachings and practices appear not only socially and experientially constraining, but intellectually restrictive as well, given its centralized system of doctrinal boundary maintenance and its history of sometimes sanctioning members who publicly dissent from its teachings. Do these practices amount to a constraint of intellectual freedom? This essay argues that they do not, and offers several possible explanations for the commonly-asserted position that they do.

Literacy And Orality In The Book Of Mormon, Brant A. Gardner Jan 2014

Literacy And Orality In The Book Of Mormon, Brant A. Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon is a literate product of a literate culture. It references written texts. Nevertheless, behind the obvious literacy, there are clues to a primary orality in Nephite culture. The instances of text creation and most instances of reading texts suggest that documents were written by and for an elite class who were able to read and write. Even among the elite, reading and writing are best seen as a secondary method of communication to be called upon to archive information, to communicate with future readers (who would have been assumed to be elite and therefore able to …
