Development Of A Collaborative Goal Setting Measure For Patients With Diabetes, Heather Morris
Development Of A Collaborative Goal Setting Measure For Patients With Diabetes, Heather Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: The potential benefits of collaborative goal setting in the clinical setting have been shown. However, we have a limited understanding about what needs to have transpired between a patient and his or her clinician for them to report that they engaged in collaborative goal setting. Therefore, our ability to monitor and foster collaborative goal setting remains limited. Methods: My three-manuscript dissertation used a mixed-methods approach utilizing both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The aims of my study were to: (1) develop a conceptual model of collaborative goal setting as perceived by patients; (2) generate a list of survey items …
Characteristics Of Effective Communication About Mental Health In An African American Urban Community: A Qualitative Analysis, Jeannette Porter
Characteristics Of Effective Communication About Mental Health In An African American Urban Community: A Qualitative Analysis, Jeannette Porter
Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown African Americans experience mental health issues at the same rate as the general population but seek treatment at only one-third that rate. Eleven African American low-income urban community leaders with basic training in mental health issues were interviewed about their perceptions of African American patterns of communication on mental health issues. Findings included a general consensus that the topic is generally not discussed, although passing references to a party’s perceived mental illness may be made using humor. When such discussion does take place, it happens only in a “safe space” with a trusted dialogue partner. Non-verbal cues …
Multiferroic Nanomagnetic Logic: Hybrid Spintronics-Straintronic Paradigm For Ultra-Low Energy Computing, Mohammad Salehi Fashami
Multiferroic Nanomagnetic Logic: Hybrid Spintronics-Straintronic Paradigm For Ultra-Low Energy Computing, Mohammad Salehi Fashami
Theses and Dissertations
Excessive energy dissipation in CMOS devices during switching is the primary threat to continued downscaling of computing devices in accordance with Moore’s law. In the quest for alternatives to traditional transistor based electronics, nanomagnet-based computing [1, 2] is emerging as an attractive alternative since: (i) nanomagnets are intrinsically more energy-efficient than transistors due to the correlated switching of spins [3], and (ii) unlike transistors, magnets have no leakage and hence have no standby power dissipation. However, large energy dissipation in the clocking circuit appears to be a barrier to the realization of ultra low power logic devices with such nanomagnets. …

Characterization Of The Effects Of Iron On Neisseria Gonorrhoeae Surface Protein Modulation And Host Cell Interactions, Aminat Oki
Theses and Dissertations
Iron is an essential nutrient that is sequestered by iron-binding proteins in the human host resulting in a hostile environment for microbes. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, however, can utilize numerous iron-binding proteins such as transferrin and lactoferrin to acquire this nutrient. During initial infection, gonococci have access to transferrin and lactoferrin present in semen and vaginal fluids, as well as to hemoglobin present in blood during menses or disseminated infections. Consequently, the gonococcus likely encounters conditions of high iron at some stages in the course of natural infection. Potential contributions of iron to gonococcal invasion have however been largely over looked in …
Evaluation Of The Allometric Exponents In Prediction Of Human Drug Clearance, Da Zhang
Evaluation Of The Allometric Exponents In Prediction Of Human Drug Clearance, Da Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Background. Allometric scaling (AS) is widely used in predicting human clearance (CL) based on animal data. Substantial prediction errors have been commonly observed and various modifications to AS have not provided a broad reliable improvement. In this study, an extensive data set was assembled including animal and human systemic CL and physiochemical properties. The allometric exponents were calculated based on multiple species AS and single-species AS methods. The correlations between the allometic exponents and physiochemical properties were evaluated in an attempt to find covariates that may explain the inter-compound variability in the allometric exponents. Lastly, the statistical approaches in analyzing …
Computational Study Of Protein-Protein Interactions In Misfolded States, Oscar Bastidas
Computational Study Of Protein-Protein Interactions In Misfolded States, Oscar Bastidas
Theses and Dissertations
Protein-protein interactions (PPI’s) play important roles in biological systems. In particular, intra-protein interactions help create and maintain correctly folded protein states and mutations that result in misfolded states may be associated with significant changes in PPI behavior. Six unrelated protein systems with known structure files, each consisting of a wild-type and mutant strain, were studied using the computational algorithm OpenContact©. OpenContact© is a simple tool that can be used to rapidly identify or map interactions “hot-spots” in a protein and was, consequently, used in this study as a starting point to examine the potential or possible role of PPI’s on …
Discovering Spam On Twitter, Ioana-Alexandra Bara
Discovering Spam On Twitter, Ioana-Alexandra Bara
Theses and Dissertations
Twitter generates the majority of its revenue from advertising. Third parties pay to have their products advertised on Twitter through: tweets, accounts and trends. However, spammers can use Sybil accounts (fake accounts) [21] to advertise and avoid paying for it. Sybil accounts are highly active on Twitter performing advertising campaigns to serve their clients [5]. They aggressively try to reach a large audience to maximize their influence. These accounts have similar behavior if controlled by the same master. Most of their spam tweets include a shortened URL to trick users into clicking on it. Also, since they share resources with …
Prediction Of Human Systemic, Biologically Relevant Pharmacokinetic (Pk) Properties Using Quantitative Structure Pharmacokinetic Relationships (Qspkr) And Interspecies Pharmacokinetic Allometric Scaling (Pk-As) Approaches For Four Different Pharmacological Classes Of Compounds, Gopichand Gottipati
Theses and Dissertations
This research developed and validated QSPKR models for predicting in-vivo human, systemic biologically relevant PK properties (i.e., reflecting the disposition of the unbound drug) of four, preselected, pharmacological classes of drugs, namely, benzodiazepines (BZD), neuromuscular blocking agents (NMB), triptans (TRP) and class III antiarrhythmic agents (AAR), as well as PK allometric scaling (PK-AS) models for BZD and NMB, using pertinent human and animal systemic PK information (fu, CLtot, Vdss and fe) from published literature. Overall, lipophilicity (logD7.4) and molecular weight (MW) were found to be the most important and statistically significant molecular properties, affecting biologically relevant systemic PK properties, and …
The Effect Of Simultaneous, Irrelevant Auditory And Visual Stimuli On A Forced-Attention Dichotic Listening Test, Keri Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Many of the studies examining cognitive control during selective attention across different sensory modalities conflict. This study was designed to study the effect of an irrelevant visual stimulus and an auditory distraction of backward speech on a forced attention dichotic listening test. I predicted that the visual stimulus and backward speech would not have a significant effect on the ear advantage. The results showed that all subjects were able to force their attention to the ear regardless of the visual or auditory distracters. In addition, I found that an irrelevant visual stimulus affects auditory attention more so in the left …
Applications Of 4-State Nanomagnetic Logic Using Multiferroic Nanomagnets Possessing Biaxial Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy And Experiments On 2-State Multiferroic Nanomagnetic Logic, Noel D'Souza
Theses and Dissertations
Nanomagnetic logic, incorporating logic bits in the magnetization orientations of single-domain nanomagnets, has garnered attention as an alternative to transistor-based logic due to its non-volatility and unprecedented energy-efficiency. The energy efficiency of this scheme is determined by the method used to flip the magnetization orientations of the nanomagnets in response to one or more inputs and produce the desired output. Unfortunately, the large dissipative losses that occur when nanomagnets are switched with a magnetic field or spin-transfer-torque inhibit the promised energy-efficiency. Another technique offering superior energy efficiency, “straintronics”, involves the application of a voltage to a piezoelectric layer to generate …
Early Prediction Of Fracture In Bodies Bounded By Random Rough Surfaces, Hector Medina
Early Prediction Of Fracture In Bodies Bounded By Random Rough Surfaces, Hector Medina
Theses and Dissertations
Under certain loading conditions, surfaces topography coupled with materials degree of brittleness can significantly compromise the mechanical performance of structures. The foregoing remains valid even if roughness is intentionally introduced for engineering reasons. In either case, stress can concentrate. The case of the stress concentration in surfaces having randomly distributed pits is a problem that, although being very practical, yet it remains unsolved. The complexity of a random configuration renders difficult the problem of analytically finding relationships between surface parameters and markers indicative of mechanical failure. Another difficulty is the reproducibility of replicates of specimens possessing random rough surfaces, for …
Joining And Hermetic Sealing Of Silicon Carbide Using Iron, Chromium, And Aluminum Alloys, Andrew Morgan
Joining And Hermetic Sealing Of Silicon Carbide Using Iron, Chromium, And Aluminum Alloys, Andrew Morgan
Theses and Dissertations
Silicon Carbide (SiC) is increasingly gaining attention as a potential fuel cladding material, on account of its favorable thermo-mechanical and neutronic properties. The major limitations of such a cladding is currently associated with joining and hermetic sealing. The work presented here investigated the use of Al, Cr and Fe metals and a specialized alloy (FeCrAl) to achieve hermetic sealing of SiC tubes as well as a joining technology of SiC. Major part of solving this issue requires addressing joining of ceramic and metallic components, which are largely dissimilar in both thermal and mechanical properties. Preliminary experiments to bond SiC with …
The Role Of Toll-Like Receptor 9 In Periodontitis, Paul Kim
The Role Of Toll-Like Receptor 9 In Periodontitis, Paul Kim
Theses and Dissertations
Periodontitis is a biofilm-initiated inflammatory disease, resulting in soft tissue damage and alveolar bone loss. A nucleic acid sensor, toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9), has been recently implicated in periodontal inflammation. This study utilized an in vivo periodontitis model using TLR9 knockout (TLR9-/-) mice to assess the role of TLR9 in periodontitis. Significant bone loss was observed in wild type, but not in TLR9-/- mice. Further experiments using ex vivo assays revealed significantly higher IL-6 production in splenocytes of wild type mice compared to knockout cells in response to Porphyromonas gingivalis (a keystone pathogen for periodontitis) challenge. In conclusion, TLR9 contributes …

Theses and Dissertations
A growing body of research is examining effective treatment(s) for individuals with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol dependence (AD). However, treatments for this comorbid population have been inadequately studied in the longer term. This study represents a long-term follow-up assessment of a randomized controlled trial that compared combined therapy (prolonged exposure + naltrexone) with monotherapies (prolonged exposure or naltrexone) for patients with PTSD and AD (see Foa, Yusko, McLean et al., 2013). Attempts were made to contact 120 participants 5-10 years after the original trial to assess the maintenance of treatment gains. Nineteen individuals were located and agreed …
A Low Cost Implementation Of Autonomous Takeoff And Landing For A Fixed Wing Uav, Thomas Carnes
A Low Cost Implementation Of Autonomous Takeoff And Landing For A Fixed Wing Uav, Thomas Carnes
Theses and Dissertations
The take-off and landing of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is often the most critical and accident prone portion of its mission. This potential hazard coupled with the time and resources necessary to train a remote UAV pilot makes it desirable to have autonomous take-off and landing capabilities for UAVs. However, a robust, reliable, and accurate autonomous takeoff and landing capability for fixed-wing aircraft is not an available feature in many low-cost UAV flight control systems. This thesis describes the design of an autonomous take-off and landing algorithm implemented on an existing low-cost flight control system for a small fixed …

Historical Tidal Forest Composition And Contemporary Woody Recruitment Following Dam Removal From A Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain Tidal Freshwater Wetland, Richard E. Ward Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Tidal freshwater forest restoration after dam removal has been unexplored to date. This study elucidated pre-dam forest composition, as well as post-dam edaphic and microtopographical attributes and woody species recruiting along a narrow ecotone of a 29.3-ha tidal freshwater wetland. The ≈65-year-old historical forest (15 species, 200 stems ha-1) and ≈7-year-old contemporary forest (40 species and 11,009 stems ha-) community dominants were dissimilar (Fraxinus spp. vs. Liquidambar styraciflua, respectively). Pre-dam environmental conditions were unknown. Post-dam edaphic water content, organic matter, redox potential and microtopography differed significantly across tidal sites but were less variable in non-tidal sites. Shifts in the contemporary …

Development Of Bivalent Ligands Targeting The Putative Ccr5-Mor Heterodimer, Thomas Raborg
Development Of Bivalent Ligands Targeting The Putative Ccr5-Mor Heterodimer, Thomas Raborg
Theses and Dissertations
Chemokine receptor CCR5 (CCR5) is a G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) predominantly expressed on leukocytes, or white blood cells.1–3 During inflammation, the body releases chemokines that bind to receptors such as CCR5 and attract leukocytes to the area of inflammation, leading to an immunological response.1 CCR5 is also an important receptor in the human immunodeficiency virus's (HIV-1) invasion of host cells, as CCR5 acts as a co-receptor that facilitates HIV-1 viral entry.4,5 The continued destruction of leukocytes as a result of HIV-1 viral entry produces a disease state called acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).5 Of note, this receptor is also expressed on …

Fabrication Of Micropatterns For The Spatial Control Of Cell Propagation And Differentiation, Mahmoud Moustafa
Theses and Dissertations
Challenges in the development of successful cell therapies involve engineering and control of cues to regulate the balance between differentiation and self-renewal. However, the complexity of architecture and function make this an intriguing problem in the context of forming functional connections. Here we present the design and fabrication of microstructured scaffolds that present a biomimetic framework along which neural cell lines can organize into oriented constructs. Specifically, we show microfabricated non-linear architectures that promote cellular fate related to propagation of human neuroblastoma cells and directed differentiation towards neurons. By mimicking biological networks that allow for spreading of the cells instead …

Due to the development of multidrug resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae, research has begun to define new drug targets for pneumonia therapy. Different research groups have identified a lipoprotein, PsaA that is important for pneumonia virulence. PsaA is a manganese transporter that is required for bacterial virulence and growth. We have employed computer modeling to virtually screen a small-molecule database for inhibition of PsaA function by targeting the metal binding pocket, performing receptor-based virtual screening and molecular docking and scoring to identify potential inhibitors of PsaA function. We have developed an assay for screening compounds, including the use of a PsaA …
Therapeutic Efficacy Of Combination Of Mtor Inhibitors And Ampk Activators In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer., Grinal Corriea
Therapeutic Efficacy Of Combination Of Mtor Inhibitors And Ampk Activators In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer., Grinal Corriea
Theses and Dissertations
Pemetrexed (PTX), an antifolate drug, has been approved by the US FDA for first line therapy of mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancer. In addition to its primary site of action on thymidylate synthase (TS), PTX also inhibits the second folate-dependent enzyme of purine biosynthesis aminoimidazolecarboxamide ribonucleotide formyltransferase (AICART). The accumulation of the substrate for AICART, ZMP, in PTX-inhibited cancer cells leads to activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) with subsequent inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and hypophosphorylation of its downstream targets responsible for protein synthesis and cell proliferation. Inhibitors of mTORC1 like Rapamycin and its analogs (rapalogs) …
An Investigation Of Nurbs-Based Deformable Image Registration, Travis J. Jacobson
An Investigation Of Nurbs-Based Deformable Image Registration, Travis J. Jacobson
Theses and Dissertations
Deformable image registration (DIR) is an essential tool in medical image processing. It provides a means to combine image datasets, allowing for intra-subject, inter-subject, multi-modality, and multi-instance analysis, as well as motion detection and compensation. One of the most popular DIR algorithms models the displacement vector field (DVF) as B-splines, a sum of piecewise polynomials with coefficients that enable local shape control. B-splines have many advantageous properties in the context of DIR, but they often struggle to adequately model steep local gradients and discontinuities. This dissertation addresses that limitation by proposing the replacement of conventional B-splines with a generalized formulation …
