(De)Psychologizing Shangri-La: Recognizing And Reconsidering C.G. Jung's Role In The Construction Of Tibetan Buddhism In The Western Imagination, Alec M. Terrana Jan 2014

(De)Psychologizing Shangri-La: Recognizing And Reconsidering C.G. Jung's Role In The Construction Of Tibetan Buddhism In The Western Imagination, Alec M. Terrana

Pomona Senior Theses

Popular literature on Tibetan Buddhism often overemphasizes the psychological dimension of the religion's beliefs and practices. This misrepresentative portrayal is largely traceable to the writings of the psychoanalyst C.G. Jung. By employing distinctly psychological terminology and interpretive strategies in his analyses of the Tibetan Book of the Dead and mandala symbolism, Jung helped to establish precedents that were adopted in subsequent analyses of the religion. Imposing a psychological lens on Tibetan Buddhism obscures other essential elements of the tradition, such as cosmology, physiology, and ritualism, thereby silencing the voices of Tibetans in analyses of their own practices. Jung's imposition of …

International Relations Or International Sanitations? Exploring Student Perceptions Of Intro To Ir Course Content, Nick Sundback Jan 2014

International Relations Or International Sanitations? Exploring Student Perceptions Of Intro To Ir Course Content, Nick Sundback

Pomona Senior Theses

This thesis draws on student testimony, curriculum analysis, and statistical tests to explore 1) the degree to which gender, financial aid status, and race/ethnicity correlate with student perceptions of Intro to IR course content and 2) the degree to which students conceptualize IR as interrelated with social identities, as opposed to an abstracted state-centric discipline.

Bridging The Justice Gap: Exploring Approaches For Improving Indigent Access To Civil Counsel, Kelsey Atkinson Jan 2014

Bridging The Justice Gap: Exploring Approaches For Improving Indigent Access To Civil Counsel, Kelsey Atkinson

Pomona Senior Theses

The United States is among one of the only democratic industrialized nations in the world that does not provide guaranteed access to civil representation in cases involving basic human need. This leaves indigent litigants who are at risk of losing their homes or their children left to seek counsel through insufficient pro-bono programs or limited scope legal self-help centers. This thesis provides a history of the struggle for the right to civil counsel, known as Civil Gideon, and explores a variety of proposed solutions to bridge the justice gap for indigent litigants. Despite considerable support for Civil Gideon among scholars …

The Clarification Of Proposition 209: Gauging The Impact On Native Americans At The University Of California, Charles R. Herman Jan 2014

The Clarification Of Proposition 209: Gauging The Impact On Native Americans At The University Of California, Charles R. Herman

Pomona Senior Theses

Proposition 209 banned the consideration of race or ethnicity in admission decisions to the University of California (UC). The UC “clarified” their policy in 2008, recognizing that Native Americans enrolled in a federally recognized tribe enjoy a political status that enables them to be offered affirmative action, even when the consideration of race or ethnicity is banned. The Clarification led to a statistically significant surge in the Native American applicant share, acceptance rate, admit share, and enrollment share. Enrollment share increased by 56% from 2008 to 2010 at the UC, even as the three-tiered California system of higher education saw …

Differentiated Instruction For Responsive Teaching In Elementary Education Student Teachers' Classrooms, Laurie Dillon Guy Jan 2014

Differentiated Instruction For Responsive Teaching In Elementary Education Student Teachers' Classrooms, Laurie Dillon Guy

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore what differentiated instruction looked like in three student teachers' classrooms. I sought to understand the challenges and successes these student teachers experienced with differentiation, the conditions they were able to control or not control, and how the relationship with the cooperating teacher impacted their capacities to practice differentiation as a method for responsive teaching. Methods included observation, interviews, and collecting student teaching artifacts. Data analyses were completed through Atlas ti, a computer program that supports qualitative research synthesis.

The theoretical framework underpinning this study was Tharp and Gallimore's neo-Vygotskian learning …

Improving Satellite Quantitative Precipitation Estimates By Incorporating Deep Convective Cloud Optical Depth, Ronald Stenz Jan 2014

Improving Satellite Quantitative Precipitation Estimates By Incorporating Deep Convective Cloud Optical Depth, Ronald Stenz

Theses and Dissertations

As Deep Convective Systems (DCSs) are responsible for most severe weather events, increased understanding of these systems along with more accurate satellite precipitation estimates will improve NWS (National Weather Service) warnings and monitoring of hazardous weather conditions. A DCS can be classified into convective core (CC) regions (heavy rain), stratiform (SR) regions (moderate-light rain), and anvil (AC) regions (no rain). These regions share similar infrared (IR) brightness temperatures (BT), which can create large errors for many existing rain detection algorithms. This study assesses the performance of the National Mosaic and Multi-sensor Quantitative Precipitation Estimation System (NMQ) Q2, and a simplified …

Output Gap As A Predictor Of Risk-Premium In The North American Financial Markets, Ryan Richard Wolbeck Jan 2014

Output Gap As A Predictor Of Risk-Premium In The North American Financial Markets, Ryan Richard Wolbeck

Theses and Dissertations

I examine the relationship between output gap and value premiums in North American financial markets between January, 1977 and December, 2013. My analysis contributes to the literature by analyzing the influence of output gap on the specific investment strategy of value and growth stocks, whereas previous literature looked at the effect of output gap on major US stock market indices. I compare the influence of output gap on value and growth stocks in full period as well as in up and down markets. My results suggest that value and growth stocks are not sensitive to output gap in the full …

Relationship Between Diabetes And Indoor Air Pollution: An Exploratory Analysis, Sandeep Mishra Jan 2014

Relationship Between Diabetes And Indoor Air Pollution: An Exploratory Analysis, Sandeep Mishra

All ETDs from UAB

India has the second highest number of people with diabetes. The high prevalence of diabetes in India cannot be explained on the basis of established risk factors like obesity. The role of air pollution in diabetes has recently received attention. Studies have indicated the possibility that air pollution generated by traffic might be associated with increased risk of diabetes. Published literature lacks studies that assess the relationship between indoor air pollution and diabetes, although indoor air pollution can lead to higher levels of pollutants in house compared to traffic pollution. The current study determined the relationship between indoor air pollution …

On The Continued Fraction Expansion Of Some Hyperquadratic Functions, Khalil Ayadi, Fatma Taktak Jan 2014

On The Continued Fraction Expansion Of Some Hyperquadratic Functions, Khalil Ayadi, Fatma Taktak

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we consider continued fraction expansions for algebraic power series over a finite field. Especially, we are interested in studying the continued fraction expansion of a particular subset of algebraic power series over a finite field, called hyperquadratic. This subset contains irrational elements \alpha satisfying an equation \alpha = f(\alpha^r), where r is a power of the characteristic of the base field and f is a linear fractional transformation with polynomials coefficients. The continued fraction expansion for these elements can sometimes be given fully explicitly. We will show this expansion for hyperquadratic power series satisfying certain types of …

The New Method Of Determining Koebe Domains For The Class Of Typically Real Functions Under Montel's Normalization, Leopold Koczan, Pawel Zaprawa Jan 2014

The New Method Of Determining Koebe Domains For The Class Of Typically Real Functions Under Montel's Normalization, Leopold Koczan, Pawel Zaprawa

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We consider the class T(r) of typically real functions with the normalization f(0)=0 and f(r)=r for a fixed r \in (0,1). In the limiting case, when r tends to 0, the class T(r) coincides with the class T of typically real functions normalized by f(0)=f'(0)-1=0. In 1980, Lewandowski and Miazga determined the Koebe domain for T(r), i.e. the set of the form \bigcap_{f\in T(r)} f(\Delta). They used the method applied earlier by Goodman. In this paper we present a new, complete method of determining this set. As a corollary, we obtain the Koebe set for T.

An Existence Result For A Quasilinear System With Gradient Term Under The Keller--Osserman Conditions, Dragos Patru Covei Jan 2014

An Existence Result For A Quasilinear System With Gradient Term Under The Keller--Osserman Conditions, Dragos Patru Covei

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We use some new technical tools to obtain the existence of entire solutions for the quasilinear elliptic system of type \Delta _pu_i+h_i(\vert x\vert) \vert \nabla u_i\vert ^{p-1}=a_i(\vert x\vert ) f_i(u_{1},u_2) on R^N (N\geq 3, i=1,2) where N-1\geq p>1, \Delta_p is the p-Laplacian operator, and h_i, a_i, f_i are suitable functions. The results of this paper supplement the existing results in the literature and complete those obtained by Jesse D Peterson and Aihua W Wood (Large solutions to non-monotone semilinear elliptic systems, Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, Volume 384, pages 284--292, 2011).

Osserman Lightlike Hypersurfaces Of Indefinite S-Manifolds, Letizia Brunetti Jan 2014

Osserman Lightlike Hypersurfaces Of Indefinite S-Manifolds, Letizia Brunetti

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We mainly deal with the problem of admissibility for screen distributions on a lightlike hypersurface of both a semi-Riemannian manifold and an indefinite S-manifold. In the latter case, we first show that a characteristic screen distribution is never admissible, and then we provide a characterization for admissible screen distributions on proper totally umbilical lightlike hypersurfaces. Finally, in studying Osserman conditions, we characterize Osserman totally umbilical hypersurfaces of a semi-Riemannian manifold, obtaining explicit results on the eigenvalues of the pseudo-Jacobi operators in the case of lightlike hypersurfaces with Lorentzian screen leaves.

On The Size Of The Third Homotopy Group Of The Suspension Of An Eilenberg--Maclane Space, Peyman Niroomand, Francesco Russo Jan 2014

On The Size Of The Third Homotopy Group Of The Suspension Of An Eilenberg--Maclane Space, Peyman Niroomand, Francesco Russo

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The nonabelian tensor square G \otimes G of a group G of G = p^n and G' = p^m (p prime and n,m \ge 1) satisfies a classic bound of the form G \otimes G \le p^{n(n-m)}. This allows us to give an upper bound for the order of the third homotopy group \pi_3(SK(G,1)) of the suspension of an Eilenberg--MacLane space K(G,1), because \pi_3(K(G,1)) is isomorphic to the kernel of \kappa : x \otimes y \in G \otimes G \mapsto [x,y] \in G'. We prove that G \otimes G \le p^{(n-1)(n-m)+2}, sharpening not only G \otimes G \le p^{n(n-m)} but …

Degenerate Hopf Bifurcations, Hidden Attractors, And Control In The Extended Sprott E System With Only One Stable Equilibrium, Zhouchao Wei, Irene Moroz, Anping Liu Jan 2014

Degenerate Hopf Bifurcations, Hidden Attractors, And Control In The Extended Sprott E System With Only One Stable Equilibrium, Zhouchao Wei, Irene Moroz, Anping Liu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we introduce an extended Sprott E system by a general quadratic control scheme with 3 arbitrary parameters for the new system. The resulting system can exhibit codimension-one Hopf bifurcations as parameters vary. The control strategy used can be applied to create degenerate Hopf bifurcations at desired locations with preferred stability. A complex chaotic attractor with only one stable equilibrium is derived in the sense of having a positive largest Lyapunov exponent. The chaotic attractor with only one stable equilibrium can be generated via a period-doubling bifurcation. To further suppress chaos in the extended Sprott E system coexisting …

Seiberg--Witten-Like Equations On 5-Dimensional Contact Metric Manifolds, Nedi̇m Deği̇rmenci̇, Şenay Bulut Jan 2014

Seiberg--Witten-Like Equations On 5-Dimensional Contact Metric Manifolds, Nedi̇m Deği̇rmenci̇, Şenay Bulut

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we write Seiberg--Witten-like equations on contact metric manifolds of dimension 5. Since any contact metric manifold has a Spin^c-structure, we use the generalized Tanaka--Webster connection on a Spin^c spinor bundle of a contact metric manifold to define the Dirac-type operators and write the Dirac equation. The self-duality of 2-forms needed for the curvature equation is defined by using the contact structure. These equations admit a nontrivial solution on 5-dimensional strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds whose contact distribution has a negative constant scalar curvature.

Adjoints Of Rationally Induced Composition Operators On Bergman And Dirichlet Spaces, Aliakbar Goshabulaghi, Hamid Vaezi

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We will state a connection between the adjoints of a vast variety of bounded operators on 2 different weighted Hardy spaces. We will apply it to determine the adjoints of rationally induced composition operators on Dirichlet and Bergman spaces.

Essential Norms Of Weighted Composition Operators Between Zygmund-Type Spaces And Bloch-Type Spaces, Amir Hossein Sanatpour, Mostafa Hassanlou

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We investigate the boundedness of weighted composition operator u C_{\varphi} mapping the Zygmund-type space Z^{\alpha} into the Bloch-type space B^{\beta}. Then we give essential norm estimates of such an operator in terms of u and \varphi.

General Rotational Surfaces In The 4-Dimensional Minkowski Space, Georgi Ganchev, Velichka Milousheva Jan 2014

General Rotational Surfaces In The 4-Dimensional Minkowski Space, Georgi Ganchev, Velichka Milousheva

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

General rotational surfaces as a source of examples of surfaces in the 4-dimensional Euclidean space were introduced by C. Moore. In this paper we consider the analogue of these surfaces in the Minkowski 4-space. On the basis of our invariant theory of spacelike surfaces we study general rotational surfaces with special invariants. We describe analytically the flat general rotational surfaces and the general rotational surfaces with flat normal connection. We classify completely the minimal general rotational surfaces and the general rotational surfaces consisting of parabolic points.

\Xi^{\Perp}-Submanifolds Of Para-Sasakian Manifolds, Selcen Yüksel Perktaş, Mukut Mani Tripathi, Erol Kiliç, Sadik Keleş Jan 2014

\Xi^{\Perp}-Submanifolds Of Para-Sasakian Manifolds, Selcen Yüksel Perktaş, Mukut Mani Tripathi, Erol Kiliç, Sadik Keleş

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Almost semiinvariant \xi^{\perp}-submanifolds of an almost paracontact metric manifold are defined and studied. Some characterizations of almost semiinvariant \xi^{\perp}-submanifolds and semiinvariant \xi^{\perp}-submanifolds are presented. A para-CR-structure is defined and it is proven that an almost semiinvariant \xi^{\perp}-submanifold of a normal almost paracontact metric (and hence para-Sasakian) manifold with the proper invariant distribution always possesses a para-\textit{CR}-structure. A counter example is also given. Integrability conditions for certain natural distributions arising on almost semiinvariant \xi^{\perp} -submanifolds are obtained. Finally, certain parallel operators on submanifolds are investigated.

A Characterization Of The Projective Transformation In Minkowski 3-Space, Yasemi̇n Alagöz Jan 2014

A Characterization Of The Projective Transformation In Minkowski 3-Space, Yasemi̇n Alagöz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

We consider transformations preserving asymptotic directions of surfaces in Minkowski 3-space and show that a transformation preserves the asymptotic directions of a surface if only if it is the projective one. Therefore, we obtain a characterization of the projective transformation.

A Cohen Type Inequality For Laguerre--Sobolev Expansions With A Mass Point Outside Their Oscillatory Regime, Edmundo José Huertas Cejudo, Francisco Marcellán Espanol, María Francisca Pérez Valero, Yamilet Quintana Jan 2014

A Cohen Type Inequality For Laguerre--Sobolev Expansions With A Mass Point Outside Their Oscillatory Regime, Edmundo José Huertas Cejudo, Francisco Marcellán Espanol, María Francisca Pérez Valero, Yamilet Quintana

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let consider the Sobolev type inner product \langle f, g\rangle_S = \int_0^{\infty} f(x)g(x)d \mu (x) + Mf(c)g(c) + Nf^{\prime}(c) g^{\prime}(c), where d\mu (x) = x^{\alpha} e^{-x}dx, \alpha > -1, is the Laguerre measure, c < 0, and M, N \geq 0. In this paper we get a Cohen-type inequality for Fourier expansions in terms of the orthonormal polynomials associated with the above Sobolev inner product. Then, as an immediate consequence, we deduce the divergence of Fourier expansions and Cesàro means of order \delta in terms of this kind of Laguerre--Sobolev polynomials.

On Transformations Of Index 1, Leyla Bugay, Osman Kelekci̇ Jan 2014

On Transformations Of Index 1, Leyla Bugay, Osman Kelekci̇

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The index and the period of an element a of a finite semigroup are defined as the smallest values of m \geq 1 and r \geq 1 such that a^{m+r}=a^m, respectively. If m=1 then a is called an element of index 1. The aim of this paper is to find some properties of the elements of index 1 in T_n, which we call transformations of index 1.

Obesogenic Environmental Influences On Young Adults: Evidence From Randomized Dormitory Assignment, Kandice A. Kapinos, Olga Yakusheva, Daniel Eisenberg Jan 2014

Obesogenic Environmental Influences On Young Adults: Evidence From Randomized Dormitory Assignment, Kandice A. Kapinos, Olga Yakusheva, Daniel Eisenberg

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This study utilizes a natural experiment—conditionally random dormitory assignments of first-year US college students—to investigate the influence of obesogenic environmental factors in explaining changes in weight and exercise behavior during the 2009–2010 academic year. The design addresses potential selection biases resulting from the likelihood that individuals sort into built environments that match their preferences for exercise and healthy eating. We find some evidence that the food environment, specifically access to campus dining, significantly affected the weight of female students in our study. Females assigned to dormitories where the nearest campus dining hall was closed on the weekends gained about 1 …

Leisure And Happiness: Evidence From International Survey Data, Miao Wang, M. C. Sunny Wong Jan 2014

Leisure And Happiness: Evidence From International Survey Data, Miao Wang, M. C. Sunny Wong

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

We study the statistical link between leisure and happiness. Using survey data from 33 countries in 2007, we find that (1) certain leisure activities, leisure’s role in self-fulfillment and social interaction, and leisure’s relation to work and other spheres of life are significantly linked to individual happiness; (2) the effect of leisure quantity is not as important as other aspects of leisure; and (3) some leisure activities can be negatively associated with happiness. Consistent with findings in previous studies, family income and individual demographic variables such as age and health condition are significantly associated with happiness. National unemployment and political …

Inflation And Inflation-Uncertainty In India: The Policy Implications Of The Relationship, Abdur Chowdhury Jan 2014

Inflation And Inflation-Uncertainty In India: The Policy Implications Of The Relationship, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose – Inflation and its related uncertainty can impose costs on real economic output in any economy. This paper aims to analyze the relationship between inflation and inflation uncertainty in India.

Design/methodology/approach – The methodology uses a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) model and Granger Causality test.

Findings – Initial estimates show the inflation rate to be a stationary process. The maximum likelihood estimates from the GARCH model reveal strong support for the presence of a positive relationship between the level of inflation and its uncertainty. The Granger causality results indicate a feedback between inflation and uncertainty.

Research limitations/implications – …
