Does Parent Management Of Past Childhood Sibling Aggression Predict Young Adult Emotion Regulation? A Retrospective Study, Joseph P. Berry
Does Parent Management Of Past Childhood Sibling Aggression Predict Young Adult Emotion Regulation? A Retrospective Study, Joseph P. Berry
Masters Theses
Childhood sibling aggression and its influence on an individual's ability to regulate emotions later in life have not been extensively studied at this point in time. Prior research indicates that repeatedly being the victim of childhood aggression can lead to concurrent social, psychological, and emotional difficulties (Crick, Bigbee, & Howes, 1996). This study used a retrospective approach to explore whether 139 college students' experiences of overt and relational childhood sibling aggression are related to current difficulties with emotion regulation in young adulthood. Overt sibling aggression or relational sibling aggression in childhood predicted difficulties in current emotion regulation. Beliefs about the …

Exploring The Relationship Between Self-Reported Religiosity And Alcohol Usage Among Undergraduate Students, Angelica Maria Bradley
Exploring The Relationship Between Self-Reported Religiosity And Alcohol Usage Among Undergraduate Students, Angelica Maria Bradley
Masters Theses
Alcohol usage is one of the greatest high-risk behaviors that institutions face today. In this study, 166 undergraduates were surveyed to explore the relationship between their religiosity and alcohol usage. The data revealed that religious students drink less than unsure or spiritual students, supporting the Social Identity Theory, which suggests that a group a student most identifies with influences them the greatest. The study also suggests that we should seek to understand this relationship, which can lead to a better understanding of why students use alcohol, and therefore, a step closer to helping them succeed where it matters most.
Anglo-American Relations Between The 1953 Coup And The 1956 Suez Crisis, Aaron F. Psujek
Anglo-American Relations Between The 1953 Coup And The 1956 Suez Crisis, Aaron F. Psujek
Masters Theses
The Cold War and global politics brought upheaval to the Middle East in the 1950s. The conflict between the United States and Soviet Union shaped the history of the region at the same time it brought war to Korea. Britain's relationship with the U.S., especially in the Middle Eastern theater, was shaped by the Cold War. British intelligence, political, and press members and agents used the tensions to bring the United States in to help them in the various crises that swept the Middle East in the 1950s. This strategy served to bring the two countries closer together in the …
Parent Knowledge Of Child's Level Of Play: Implications For Early Childhood And Preschool Assessment, Jessie Shuemaker
Parent Knowledge Of Child's Level Of Play: Implications For Early Childhood And Preschool Assessment, Jessie Shuemaker
Masters Theses
The purpose of the study was to examine how accurately parents were able to report on their own child's play skills. Additionally, the study sought to examine if the addition of a parent interview used in conjunction with an observational play-based assessment would warrant a more comprehensive and accurate picture of a child's skills. A Spearman Rank Order Correlation was conducted to examine the relationship between a parent interview developed specifically for this study and an observational play-based assessment. Kappa Coefficients were also conducted to determine the level of agreement between the interviews and observations. Results suggested a weak positive …

Grief, Loss And Stress Burden Among Spouse Caregivers Of The Person With Young-Onset Dementia, Sharbari Ganguly
Masters Theses
The effects of young/early-onset dementia are devastating not only for the person who has been diagnosed with young/early-onset dementia, but also for their primary caregivers (de Vugt & Verhey, 2013). The major aim of this study is to focus on the level of grief, loss, and stress burden that are associated with the partner or the spouse caregivers of someone with young-onset dementia. This study has used a previously unanalyzed set of data consisting of 55 partner or spouse young-onset dementia caregivers. Three instruments were used for data collection including the Marwit-Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory (MMCGI), the Zarit Burden Interview …
Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal
Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal
Masters Theses
Explores representations in American news media of women who have been involved sexually with male politicians and women who are politicians through a critical rhetorical lens. Through the use of poststructural feminism, the term "mistress" is problematized. Attention is given to the news media's focus on women's bodies as sites of dangerous sexual temptations as well as the media's constant attention to women's physical features, which reduces women to objects. It is shown that similar coverage regarding bodies is not given to men. Also discusses the news media's frequent interrogation of women's minds. Explores aspects of confession and apology through …
Methods Development In Biological Mass Spectrometry: Application In Glycoproteomics, Sanja Trajkovic
Methods Development In Biological Mass Spectrometry: Application In Glycoproteomics, Sanja Trajkovic
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Proteomics refers to global characterization of the full set of proteins present in a biological sample. Various analytical disciplines contribute to proteomics but mass spectrometry became method of choice for analysis of complex protein samples.
Mass spectrometry allows for high throughput analysis of the proteome but, moreover, it has the ability to acquire higher-order information such as post-translational modifications (PTM). Glycosylation is the most abundant PTM on eukaryotic proteins.
This dissertation will focus on method development for structural proteomics that will be utilized to explain the glycoproteome of obligate intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii as a model system.

Laser Spectroscopy Of Radicals Containing Group Iiia And Va Elements, Robert A. Grimminger
Laser Spectroscopy Of Radicals Containing Group Iiia And Va Elements, Robert A. Grimminger
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Radicals are interesting to study because of importance in so many processes such as semiconductor growth or stellar evolution. Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and wavelength resolved emission spectra of jet cooled HPS, HAsO, AsD2, H2PS, and F2BO have been measured using the pulsed discharge jet technique.
Several bands in the à 1A′′ − X̃ 1A′ transition of HPS were observed and assigned with the help of ab initio calculations. The ab initio geometries showed that HPS does not follow Walsh’s predictions for the angle change upon electronic excitation; Walsh predicts an increase …
Nuclear Structure In Transitional Regions: Studies Of ¹³²,¹³⁴Xe And Lifetimes In The Stable Zr Nuclei With The (N,N′Γ) Reaction, Erin Elizabeth Peters
Nuclear Structure In Transitional Regions: Studies Of ¹³²,¹³⁴Xe And Lifetimes In The Stable Zr Nuclei With The (N,N′Γ) Reaction, Erin Elizabeth Peters
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Nuclei at closed shells tend to be spherical and are well-described by the shell model, while those between closed shells are deformed and better described by collective models. The nuclei which are in transitional regions between spherical and deformed may be studied to gain insight into the nature of this transition. The stable isotopes of zirconium and xenon span such transitional regions and are the subject of this dissertation. Gamma-ray spectroscopy following inelastic neutron scattering has been performed on the stable isotopes of Zr as well as 132,134Xe at the University of Kentucky Accelerator Laboratory. Level lifetimes have been …
Applications Of Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry And Capillary Electrophoresis For The Analysis Of Lignocellulosic Biomass Pretreatment, Dawn M. Kato
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The focus of this dissertation centers on the development and applications of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and capillary electrophoresis methodologies to quantify monomeric compositions of the β-O-4 linkages in lignin. Pretreatment is a required step in the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for biofuels. Lignin is the target of pretreatment because it hinders the accessibility of enzymes and chemicals to cellulose. The effects of pretreatment are commonly assessed utilizing enzymatic saccharification and lignin assays. However, these techniques do not elucidate the effects of pretreatment on the monomeric make up of lignin.
The overarching hypothesis of this dissertation is that changes in individual …
Temperature-Dependent Tunable Photoluminescence Properties Of Carbon Nanodots Derived From Polyethylene Glycol, Sin Hea Yeom
Temperature-Dependent Tunable Photoluminescence Properties Of Carbon Nanodots Derived From Polyethylene Glycol, Sin Hea Yeom
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
Fluorescent carbon dots (C-dots) are well known for their low cell-cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, low preparation cost, excitation dependent photoluminescence, and excellent photostability. Typically, raw C-dots have low quantum efficiency and thus researchers have been utilizing biocompatible polymers such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a passivation agent in order to increase fluorescence signal. In this work, we report fluorescent self-passivated carbon nanodots (CNDs) synthesized from PEG by using it as a carbon source as well as a passivating agent. Importantly, the addition of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) during the synthesis of self-passivated CNDs can tune photoluminescence property. The results of bioimaging and …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In the first section of this thesis I explore how Osvaldo Soriano resorts to parody as a way to express his dissatisfaction with Argentinian politics in his novel Una sombra ya pronto seras. I reflect on the lives of the protagonist and author and reveal how they both share similar ideologies. I also explore the translation process in depth and provide solutions and explanations for my translations. I discuss how losses are inevitable in any type of translation, regardless if the translation has been domesticated or foreignized. In the second section I provide a foreignized English translation of the first …
A Straw Tube Tracking Detector For The New Muon G-2 E989 Experiment, Mary Elizabeth Shenk
A Straw Tube Tracking Detector For The New Muon G-2 E989 Experiment, Mary Elizabeth Shenk
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The New Muon g-2 E989 Collaboration at Fermilab will measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment a&mgr; to a precision of 140 ppb, which represents a four-fold improvement in the experimental precision of the current value. Central to the E989 experiment is the muon storage ring magnet previously used by the E821 Collaboration at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The storage ring produces a highly precise magnet field. Muons will circulate the storage ring within a vacuum, and as the spin angular momentum of each muon precesses about the axis of the applied magnetic field, the muons will decay into positrons emitted preferentially …
Where Does Racial Discrimination Occur? An Experimental Analysis Across Neighborhood And Housing Unit Characteristics, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley
Where Does Racial Discrimination Occur? An Experimental Analysis Across Neighborhood And Housing Unit Characteristics, Andrew R. Hanson, Zackary Hawley
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This paper examines racial discrimination across several neighborhood and housing unit characteristics including racial composition, rent, and distance from the urban core. We find that African Americans face higher rates of discrimination than whites in a wide range of racially mixed neighborhoods, in higher rent areas, closer to central cities, and in low vacancy areas. These results are robust to various parameterizations of the local smoothing empirical specification and within a multivariate nonlinear parametric estimation technique. The location of discrimination supports the current/future customer prejudice and perceived preference hypotheses as a cause of discrimination in housing markets but not the …

Biodegradation Of Drilling Fluid Used In South Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Andrea Xamplas Greer
Biodegradation Of Drilling Fluid Used In South Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica, Andrea Xamplas Greer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The Antarctic Geological Drilling (ANDRILL) researchers obtained a rock core from below the sea-floor in South McMurdo Sound (SMS), Antarctica. During the core retrieval, approximately 5.6 x105 liters of drilling fluid was lost in the subsurface. The loss of this fluid, which contained biodegradable components, may significantly alter the in situ microbial ecology as well as the geochemistry of the subsurface. The introduction of drilling fluid into the subsurface can be viewed as a source of contamination. However, it also provides the opportunity to indirectly study the microbial communities of the subsurface through analyses of the return drilling fluids. This …

We will show how the dynamics depend on the parameters.
"Amorous Ghosts" By Paco Ignacio Taibo Ii : Translation Of "Amorosos Fantasmas" From The Spanish, Shevon Porter
"Amorous Ghosts" By Paco Ignacio Taibo Ii : Translation Of "Amorosos Fantasmas" From The Spanish, Shevon Porter
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is a translation into English of Paco Ignacio Taibo II's Mexican detective novel, Amorosos fantasmas. The approach used in translating was in line with Lawrence Venuti's concept of foreignization. This approach was employed in favor of a more common style of domestication. Foreignization allows the translated text to retain some linguistic and cultural elements that are important or distinctive in the source text. In doing so, it evokes a feeling of foreignness. The reader of this translation may feel aware that he or she is reading a book that was not originally written in English; it is intentionally …
"Unseen And Unheard" : Representations Of Mental Illness In Contemporary American Immigrant Literature, Ellen D. Stuart
"Unseen And Unheard" : Representations Of Mental Illness In Contemporary American Immigrant Literature, Ellen D. Stuart
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Focusing on two novels, Wendy Law-Yone's The Coffin Tree and Julia Alvarez's How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, this analysis employs a framework drawn from research on mental health, which recognizes the cumulative impact of the immigrant's experiences through the process of migration on his/her development of mental illness by dividing migration into three stages: pre-migration, peri-migration, and post-migration. Because each stage carries its own set of factors potentially increasing the immigrant's vulnerability to mental illness, the experiences of the individual characters during the stages of migration are examined, as are their experiences of specific mental illnesses. Reading immigrant …

A (Re)Conception Of The City : Commercialization, Domestication, And Resistance In New York City From Melville To Mckay, James Baltrum
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation characterizes the historical changes that shaped nineteenth and twentieth century New York City by examining how Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, John Dos Passos, and Claude McKay expressed these changes in their literary works. I employ the ideological principles of scholars such as Henri Lefebvre, who viewed physical spaces including the modern city as socially constructed products, and the methodology of writers such as Michel Foucault, whose genealogical approach prompts an open-ended and multi-faceted analysis. Consequently, my argument shows how various economic, social, cultural, political, and technological developments worked with and against each other to shape (and …
A Classification Of Class Two And Class Three Nilpotent Table Algebras, Caroline Kettlestrings
A Classification Of Class Two And Class Three Nilpotent Table Algebras, Caroline Kettlestrings
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Table algebras are generalizations of adjacency algebras, and of the character ring of a finite group. Extensions of groups by groups have been well studied, and Hirasaka and Bang have generalized this to the study of extensions of association schemes by association schemes. In this dissertation, we study central extensions of table algebras by table algebras, in the case where the extension is either class two nilpotent (which means it is an extension of a group algebra by a group algebra), or class three nilpotent (which means it is an extension of a class two nilpotent table algebra by a …
A Comparative Analysis Of Primate First Metatarsals : Implications For Ardipithecus Ramidus, Kristine Mitchell
A Comparative Analysis Of Primate First Metatarsals : Implications For Ardipithecus Ramidus, Kristine Mitchell
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Ardipithecus ramidus is a controversial fossil in terms of its phyletic position relative to the hominid lineage. Lovejoy and White argue that Ar. ramidus is a stem hominid while others, like Wood, Harrison and Sarmiento do not agree and propose alternative interpretations. These later authors argue that the proposed "human-like" characteristics used by Lovejoy and White to support their stem hominid hypothesis can also be attributed to other lineages, like fossil apes, and they further believe that Ar. ramidus might not even be a hominid at all. Given these alternative interpretations concerning Ardipithecus, the first metatarsal of Ar. ramidus was …
A Comprehensive Phylogenetic Study Of The Core Genome Of Thirteen Bacillus And Related Species Using Known And Novel Techniques, Jennifer Diane Hintzsche
A Comprehensive Phylogenetic Study Of The Core Genome Of Thirteen Bacillus And Related Species Using Known And Novel Techniques, Jennifer Diane Hintzsche
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
A comprehensive study into the phylogeny of the Bacillus core genome was accomplished using two primary studies. The first study involved two previously studied methods, MUMmer and BSR, and one novel approach, RINC, to compare core genome phylogeny. BSR analysis revealed genomic rearrangements among the genomes of interest. MUMmer was used to confirm these genomic rearrangements and provide evidence that 76.2% of the inverted regions were statistically significant. Circular chromosome comparisons connecting homologous core genes revealed an ancestral inversion pivoted on the terminus in several species. The inversions were resolved, allowing for the identification of the location of the core …

Exploring Faculty Beliefs Regarding Teaching African American Freshmen To Interpret Social Cues At A Minority-Serving Institution, Concetta A. Williams
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Through the use of critical qualitative methodology, this dissertation explored faculty beliefs at an urban, minority-serving institution regarding the ability of African American first-time, full-time freshmen to interpret social cues in higher education contexts. Specifically, this study examined [1] faculty-student interaction as a process of socialization for students and [2] how faculty members teach students to interpret or read social cues as they relate to higher education contexts. The definition of literacy is considered in broad terms as a transaction between a reader and either the spoken word or a given context (verbal and nonverbal).||This examination found that participants: [1] …
Exploring The Link Between Attribution Biases And Aggressive Behavior Among Adolescents : Are Parents' Attributions And Management Of Peers Contributing Factors?, Haeli Gerardy
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The current thesis project investigated two parental influences on adolescents' hostile intent attributions and aggression - mothers' hostile intent attributions regarding adolescents' peers and management of peer relationships. Consistent with the small literature on parent-child concordance of hostile attributions, mothers' instrumental hostile intent attributions (IHIAs) were related in a positive fashion to adolescents' hostile attributions about peers in the same scenarios. Findings were the first among a sample of mothers and adolescents older than fifth grade. There was some evidence for an interactive effect of mothers' instrumental hostile attributions on higher levels of boys', but not girls', overt aggression. Mothers' …
Exponential Random Graph Models For Multilevel Networks, Daniel Tattersall
Exponential Random Graph Models For Multilevel Networks, Daniel Tattersall
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This master's thesis investigates the use of exponential random graph models for multilevel networks. It begins by describing some basic ideas in network analysis and then moves into the use of models to describe observed networks. After establishing modeling concepts for single-level networks, the discussion expands to modeling multilevel networks, which is a less common practice, and provides a brief multilevel modeling application. Focus is given to ERGM theory basics and highlights potential problems that researchers may encounter when employing these methods. Ultimately, the reader leaves with a sense of how and why network complexity can be modeled and some …
