Design Of A Heat Pump Assisted Solar Thermal System, Kyle G. Krockenberger, John M. Degrove, William J. Hutzel, J. Christopher Foreman
International High Performance Buildings Conference
This paper outlines the design of an active solar thermal loop system that will be integrated with an air source heat pump hot water heater to provide highly efficient heating of a water/propylene glycol mixture. This system design uses solar energy when available, but reverts to the heat pump at night or during cloudy weather. This new design will be used for hydronic heating in the Applied Energy Laboratory, a teaching laboratory at Purdue University, but it is more generally applicable for a residential scale system that could be used for both hydronic heating and hot water production. This combined …
Energy Modeling Of A Botanical Air Filter, Daniel W. Newkirk, William J. Hutzel, Michael Dana, Ming Qu
Energy Modeling Of A Botanical Air Filter, Daniel W. Newkirk, William J. Hutzel, Michael Dana, Ming Qu
International High Performance Buildings Conference
According to the U.S. EPA Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors where indoor air is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Toxins in the built environment have been found to cause adverse physical and mental health effects on occupants and are estimated to cost the U.S. 125 billion dollar annually in lost productivity. To address this challenge a novel botanical air filter was developed for improving indoor air quality in buildings. The “Biowall” is envisioned as an integral part of the heating and cooling system for a home or small commercial building; where it will …

Microgrids For Improving Manufacturing Energy Efficiency, Terance J. Harper, William J. Hutzel, Athula Kulatunga, J. Christopher Foreman, Aaron L. Adams
International High Performance Buildings Conference
Thirty-one percent of annual energy consumption in the United States occurs within the industrial sector, where manufacturing processes account for the largest amount of energy consumption and carbon emissions. For this reason, energy efficiency in manufacturing facilities is increasingly important for reducing operating costs and improving profits. Using microgrids to generate local sustainable power should reduce energy consumption from the main utility grid along with energy costs and carbon emissions. Also, microgrids have the potential to serve as reliable energy generators in international locations where the utility grid is often unstable. For this research, a smart microgrid system was designed …
Although The “Get-Tough” Approach Is Popular Among The American Public And Policymakers Alike, Incarceration Does Not Reduce Crime, Marika Dawkins-Cavazos
Although The “Get-Tough” Approach Is Popular Among The American Public And Policymakers Alike, Incarceration Does Not Reduce Crime, Marika Dawkins-Cavazos
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The prevalence of crime has been of great concern to policymakers for decades, with many factors being blamed and many solutions suggested. Since the 1970s’ punitive incarceration policies have found favor, and are now being replicated for juvenile offenders as well. Using state-level data on crime and juvenile residential placement (which have now become very similar in their operations to those of adult facilities), Marika Dawkins finds that such placements do not lead to a reduction in juvenile offending or crime. She argues that, in this light, community-based sanctions as well as greater support for families should take precedence over …
Bipolar Nanosecond Electric Pulses Are Less Efficient At Electropermeabilization And Killing Cells Than Monopolar Pulses, Bennett L. Ibey, Olga N. Pakhomova, Caleb C. Roth, Shu Xiao, Karl Schoenbach, Andrei G. Pakhomov
Bipolar Nanosecond Electric Pulses Are Less Efficient At Electropermeabilization And Killing Cells Than Monopolar Pulses, Bennett L. Ibey, Olga N. Pakhomova, Caleb C. Roth, Shu Xiao, Karl Schoenbach, Andrei G. Pakhomov
Bioelectrics Publications
Multiple studies have shown that bipolar (BP) electric pulses in the microsecond range are more effective at permeabilizing cells while maintaining similar cell survival rates as compared to monopolar (MP) pulse equivalents. In this paper, we investigated whether the same advantage existed for BP nanosecond-pulsed electric fields (nsPEF) as compared to MP nsPEF. To study permeabilization effectiveness, MP or BP pulses were delivered to single Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and the response of three dyes, Calcium Green-1, propidium iodide (PI), and FM1-43, was measured by confocal microscopy. Results show that BP pulses were less effective at increasing intracellular calcium …
Old Earth Theology: A Factor That Explains Inconsistent Belief Of Inerrancy Among Florida Southern Baptists, David A. Mcgee
Old Earth Theology: A Factor That Explains Inconsistent Belief Of Inerrancy Among Florida Southern Baptists, David A. Mcgee
Faculty Publications and Presentations
A major shift in thinking seems to be occurring in contemporary evangelical thinking. Southern Baptists overwhelmingly rejected the views of twentienth-century liberal Southern Baptist professors in favor of a literal translation of Genesis. Now, however, this debate may not be so one-sided among Southern Baptists. Within the current evangelical community there is a belief that the age of the earth has no bearing upon the doctrine of inerrancy. A study was conducted in 2013 that reveals belief in the age of the earth is one factor that contributes to the degree to which the doctrine of inerrancy is affirmed. The …

Exploring Spirituality In Teaching Within A Christian School Context Through Collaborative Action Research, Alaster Gibson
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This article reports on a collaborative action research project conducted in New Zealand, during 2012, exploring spirituality in teaching within a Christian school context. The experienced primary school teacher participant chose to take action around the issue of personal fear and insecurity which were believed to be hindering professional growth and relationships. Through self-directed inquiry, critical reflective journaling, Bible study, fellowship and prayer with trusted friends, the teacher experienced a renewed sense of peace and freedom in Christ. This personal transformation was believed to be influential on subsequent professional practice, assisting the teacher to become more relational, responsive and compassionate. …
Researching The Teaching Context: Faithful Practice, Geoff Beech
Researching The Teaching Context: Faithful Practice, Geoff Beech
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Christian teachers are called to a teaching practice that is biblically grounded or based on a biblical world and life view, but can the same imperative be applied to those wishing to conduct research in Christian education contexts? This paper considers one approach to qualitative methodologies that considers the ultimate goal of truth-seeking in research in the sciences to be a deeply religious activity. The ultimate goal of biblically grounded research is proposed as being greatest-commandment driven, and to accomplish this, an epistemological base that is holistic and relational is proposed. This epistemology moves from a biblically oriented sense of …

As a Technical Editor for ICCTE and a Project Manager at Miller Technologies, I have a passion for helping others with technology. I remember a fellow student in the third grade asking me how to fix a problem in Microsoft Word. My reaction was to click yes to everything that popped up on the screen, because that made sense to me. I ended up erasing the entire document … oops, but my passion for helping others in their technology grew with a little more skill. I enjoy tech questions and getting to meet new people. Children-Robot Interaction: Eye Gaze Analysis Of Children With Autism During Social Interactions, Seyedmohammad Mavadati, Huanghao Feng, S. Silver, Anibal Gutierrez, Mohammad H. Mahoor
Electrical and Computer Engineering: Graduate Student Scholarship
Background:
Typical developing individuals utilize the direction of eye gaze and eye fixation/shifting as crucial elements to transmit socially relevant information (e.g. like, dislike) to others. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), deviant pattern of mutual eye gaze is a noticeable feature that may be one of the earliest (detectable) demonstrations of impaired social skills that would lead to other deficits in ASD Individuals (e.g. delaying development of social cognition and affective construal processes). This can significantly affect the quality of human’s social interactions. Recent studies reveal that children with ASD have superior engagement to the robot-based interaction, and it …
The Impact Of Quantitative Materiality, Perceived Responsibility And Machiavellianism On Tax Professionals’ Decision Making Regarding Fraud Detection And Reporting In The Prc, Qian Yu
Lingnan Theses
Research on fraud detection in accounting has long focused primarily on financial statement fraud and responsibilities of auditors and company management relating to such frauds. While tax fraud is also clearly significant, and tax professionals have responsibilities relating to fraud detection, little prior research has addressed this issue. The current research examines the impact of quantitative materiality, perceived responsibility (based on the triangle model of responsibility) and Machiavellianism on several aspects of tax professionals’ decision making regarding fraud detection and reporting.
I surveyed all tax professionals in the People’s Republic of China working for one of the Big 4 public …
Tax-Induced Earnings Management, Auditor Conservatism, And Tax Enforcement, Yongbo Li
Tax-Induced Earnings Management, Auditor Conservatism, And Tax Enforcement, Yongbo Li
Lingnan Theses
Prompted by the recent statutory corporate income tax-rate reduction in China, in this study I investigate whether the constraining effect that quality auditors have on tax-related discretionary current accruals (DCA) differs for two sub-groups of listed firms with tax incentives to manage earnings upward versus downward. I also explore whether the effectiveness of tax authority scrutiny (i.e. tax enforcement) on DCA differs for the same two groups.
I find that the firms’ two external monitors are sensitive to the direction of managerial incentives for earnings management. Specifically, higher-quality auditors are associated with smaller amounts of reported DCA and this association …
Open-Minded Discussion In Interdepartmental Collaboration : Contribution Of Goal Interdependence And Social Motives, Jiewei, Antonia Lu
Open-Minded Discussion In Interdepartmental Collaboration : Contribution Of Goal Interdependence And Social Motives, Jiewei, Antonia Lu
Lingnan Theses
Combining theories of social motives, goal interdependence, and conflict management, this study theorized a model in which interdepartmental goal interdependence affects conflict outcomes between different departments through open-minded discussion dynamics adopted by employees from different departments in the organization. This study also proposes that social motives moderate the link between inter-departmental goal interdependence and open-minded discussion.
A sample of 133 employees from different business organizations in China were interviewed to recall a critical incident when they had a conflict with their coworker from different departments. SEM results and other analysis results support the hypotheses that cooperative interdepartmental goal interdependence and …
Performance Persistence Of Institutional Investors In Ipo Market : Evidence From China, Sibo Liu
Performance Persistence Of Institutional Investors In Ipo Market : Evidence From China, Sibo Liu
Lingnan Theses
Using a dataset consisting of complete bid information for 477 bookbuilt IPOs that took place during Nov 2010 to Oct 2012 in China, I examine whether the performance of institutional investors demonstrates persistence in the IPO market. Building on the adverse selection model as developed by Rock (1986) and a twoperiod analysis, I develop three hypotheses and obtain empirical results that are consistent with the hypotheses. Firstly, I find that the performance of institutional investors continues into the next period. Secondly, I find that the performance persistence exists only for the investors with good past performance but not for investors …
The Emergence Of Civil Disobedience Movements In Hong Kong, Kwun Hong Chan
The Emergence Of Civil Disobedience Movements In Hong Kong, Kwun Hong Chan
Lingnan Theses
Civil disobedience, as a specific means of protest, has drawn intellectual attention worldwide, but few scholars in Hong Kong have studied this means of protest in depth. Focusing on the reasons why civil disobedience movements have emerged in Hong Kong, this research has used a case study methodology. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with people that participated in many of Hong Kong’s previous civil disobedience movements, from the Yau Ma Tei Boat People Incident of the 1970s, to the Anti-Public Order Ordinance demonstrations and Citizens’ Radio Incident of the early 2000s. In addition to describing how the emergence of specific …
The Politics Of Crisis Management In Post-1997 Hong Kong : A State-Society Interactive Framework, Hin Yeung Chan
The Politics Of Crisis Management In Post-1997 Hong Kong : A State-Society Interactive Framework, Hin Yeung Chan
Lingnan Theses
Most studies and research on crisis management and government crises put their focus on advanced, democratic nations, where governments have to bear the responsibility of handling of a crisis through elections. However, relatively little attention has been given on the consequences of crises, particularly governance crises, in regimes without full democracy. By using post-1997 Hong Kong, a liberal society with limited democracy, as an example, this thesis aims to examine the applicability of crisis management theories and models currently available, and to introduce an entirely new State-society Interactive Framework 1 to tackle their limitations.
The Five Tasks Leadership Approach suggested …

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
Introduction
Avascular necrosis of femoral head (ANFH) is a progressive disease that often leads to hip joint dysfunction and even disability in young patients. Although the standard treatment, which is core decompression, has the advantage of minimal invasion, the efficacy is variable. Recent studies have shown that implantation of bone marrow containing osteogenic precursors into necrotic lesion of ANFH may be promising for the treatment of ANFH.
Methods
A prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effect of bone-marrow buffy coat (BBC) grafting combined with core decompression for the treatment of ANFH. Forty-five patients (53 hips) with …

Textbook Cost-Lowering Initiatives: An Exploration Of Community College Faculty Experiences, Susan Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Faculty have been identified as critical players in the implementation of textbook affordability efforts at community colleges. Furthermore, emerging lower-cost alternatives to traditional textbooks present a wide and growing range of options that may help further efforts. This study sought to examine more closely the role of faculty with respect to textbook cost-lowering initiatives. The researcher utilized in-depth interviews to gain a rich picture of the experiences, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of nine full-time community college faculty as they confronted textbook affordability efforts and textbook alternatives. The interview data were analyzed using a thematic analysis process. Five major themes and …
