The E-Team Project: A Teamwork Approach To Clinical Legal Education, Hilary Evans Cameron Jan 2014

The E-Team Project: A Teamwork Approach To Clinical Legal Education, Hilary Evans Cameron

Journal of Law and Social Policy

In this article the author argues that the University of Toronto’s Emergency Team (E-Team)—a student pilot project created to assist people facing deportation on short notice—provided a critical service to its clients and gave its student members a unique opportunity to learn real-world legal skills. The first part of this article reviews the project’s outcomes and concludes that it was a success: the E-Team won nine of its ten cases, and its members credit the project both with teaching them crucial legal competencies that they did not encounter elsewhere and with fostering their passion for social justice law. The second …

Framing Supervisory Relationships In Clinical Law: The Role Of Critical Pedagogy, Gemma Smyth, Marion Overholt Jan 2014

Framing Supervisory Relationships In Clinical Law: The Role Of Critical Pedagogy, Gemma Smyth, Marion Overholt

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Clinical work in law offers important opportunities for students to learn critical, reflective and politicized approaches to legal identity and practice. Such an approach is most meaningful when it is engaged by supervising lawyers and social workers in a clinical placement. The authors of this article, the Academic Clinic Director and Executive Director of two Windsor-based clinic programs, offer context, perspective and examples of how critical pedagogy (influenced by, but distinct from, critical legal studies) provides a roadmap for supervising lawyers and the programs in which they work. The paper briefly sets the context of the authors' teaching and practice. …

Journal of Law and Social Policy

The purpose of this paper is to examine the importance of self-care and stress management in the legal profession, specifically within the context of clinical legal education. Studies have shown that the legal profession exhibits one of the highest rates of mental health and addiction issues. In proactively addressing the importance of self-care and stress management amongst students, clinical legal educational programs can become a part of the solution. Using the student experience at Parkdale Community Legal Services, and drawing from other student legal clinics across Canada and the United States, several recommendations around self-care and stress management training in …

Not So Dangerous Liaisons: A Clinical Perspective On Interdisciplinarity, Judith Mccormack Jan 2014

Not So Dangerous Liaisons: A Clinical Perspective On Interdisciplinarity, Judith Mccormack

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Clinical education represents a site where conflicting accounts of law are at maximum tension, in part because the clinical experience tends to highlight the startling contrast between the narratives and social realities of law. While this contrast provides some of the fodder for the critical exploration that characterizes clinical education, the idiosyncratic shape of law as a discipline means that much of what students require to handle that fodder in a rigorous, analytical way is located elsewhere. A clinical lens indicates that exposing students to interdisciplinary perspectives is crucial if students are to be able to understand and engage with …

Understanding The Relevance Of Drug User And Sex Worker Community-Based Organizations And Their Interactions With Government Officials And Health Care Providers In Vietnam: A Qualitative Study, Leah Thi Le

Public Health Theses

Background & Objective: To address the HIV epidemic in Vietnam, groups of former drug users and sex workers established grassroots organizations throughout Vietnam in the early 2000s, called community-based organizations (CBOs). The objectives of this study are to understand the purpose of the CBOs, the government-CBO interactions, the perceived stigma toward drugs users and sex workers, and the attitudes of government officials about the purpose of the CBOs. Thereafter, we aspire to recommend changes to promote collaboration between the CBOs and the government programs. Methods: Thirty-two individuals from the drug user and sex worker CBOs and relevant government programs participated …

The Oncogenic Role Of Piwi Proteins In Breast Carcinogenesis, Donghai Liang Jan 2014

The Oncogenic Role Of Piwi Proteins In Breast Carcinogenesis, Donghai Liang

Public Health Theses

As the leading source of cancer death among women worldwide, breast cancer has experienced a steady increase in prevalence in recently years, a trend that is most evident in industrialized nations. One possible explanation for this epidemic phenomenon is the exposure to light at night through shiftwork, which has been linked to both aberrant DNA methylation and increased risk of breast cancer development. Based on a whole-genome methylation analysis on a selected sample of the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health prospective cohort, we observed statistically significant hypomethylation in the PIWIL1 gene, a member of the PIWI protein family, among night …

Is Smoking Protective Against The Development Of Endoleak?, Ziyi Li Jan 2014

Is Smoking Protective Against The Development Of Endoleak?, Ziyi Li

Public Health Theses

Background: Endoleak has been reported as a major complication among patients who have undergone endovascular repair of their abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Several studies made efforts towards identifying the risk factors for the development of endoleak through various studies and data analyses. Among all the findings, one result--smoking significantly lowers a patient's risk for an endoleak--has been confirmed multiple times. But such a result appears to be contradictory to what researchers have anticipated; yet the contradictory has not been closely studied.

Methods: Data on endoleaks from the Department of Veterans' Affairs Open Versus Endovascular Repair (OVER) randomized controlled trial was …

Switched-Capacitor Voltage Doubler Design Using 0.5 Μm Technology, Hanfeng Wang Jan 2014

Switched-Capacitor Voltage Doubler Design Using 0.5 Μm Technology, Hanfeng Wang

Theses

While integrated circuit (IC) power management has been an eternal topic for chip designers, inductor based DC-DC converters have been dominant in the field for years. However, because of the natures of inductors: large electro-magnetic interference, high coupling noise, and difficult silicon fabrication process, they are not favorable to on-chip solutions. Switched-capacitor (SC) DC-DC converters, which adopt capacitors for their energy storage components, have become increasingly popular among both the academia and the industry, because, apparently, they avoid the drawbacks of the inductor counterparts, and can be directly implemented on-chip without additional fabrication process.

In this paper, we will investigate …

International Political Economy: How Does Freedom Correlate With Economic Success?, Trevis Harrold Jan 2014

International Political Economy: How Does Freedom Correlate With Economic Success?, Trevis Harrold

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

It is thought by many that the size of a nation's economy determines the amount and kind of services that any individual in that nation can access. This paper explores how freedom affects a country's economic success in terms of GDP per capita. The conclusions are that the amount of freedom a country has, as determined by Freedom house measures, does have an effect on Gross Domestic Product per Capita.

Generally, the more freedom a country has the higher the GDP per capita is. Countries should promote and establish free regimes in order to have the best economic output. In …

Meta-Analysis Of Male And Female Function In Plants With Contrasting Architecture And Mating Systems, Lisa Wyse Jan 2014

Meta-Analysis Of Male And Female Function In Plants With Contrasting Architecture And Mating Systems, Lisa Wyse

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

A plant has limited resources to invest in growth and reproduction. A plant's inflorescence architecture and mating system are predicted to influence investment in sexual function. Investment in male and female function (pollen and ovules) represents one measure of such balance. However, few studies have considered architecture and mating system in combination. P:O ratio, as well as information regarding inflorescence structure and lifespan was assembled and analyzed to test the hypothesis that pollen: ovule ratio is contingent upon combined plant architecture and mating system. Across different mating systems, xenogamous species had significantly larger P:O ratios than autogamous and facultative species. …
