Detecting Covert Communication Channels In Raster Images, Brian Cusack, Jarrett Chambers
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
Digital image steganography is a method for hiding secret messages within everyday Internet communication channels. Such covert communications provide protection for communications and exploit the opportunities available in digital media. Digital image steganography makes the nature and content of a message invisible to other users by taking ordinary internet artefacts and using them as cover objects for the messages. In this paper we demonstrate the capability with raster image files and discuss the challenges of detecting such covert communications. The contribution of the research is community awareness of covert communication capability in digital media and the motivation for including such …
Social Justice Issues In The Education Of Aboriginal English Speakers, Ian G. Malcolm
Social Justice Issues In The Education Of Aboriginal English Speakers, Ian G. Malcolm
Language as a Social Justice Issue Conference
Most Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia use a variety of Aboriginal English for communication, at least within their own speech communities. This paper provides an overview of some of the issues of social justice which are entailed in providing for these people, as Australian citizens, a fair and equitable education.
Concerns are raised in four areas:
- Linguistic myths surrounding Aboriginal English and Standard English (SE). Traditionally, SE has been assumed to be unified, accent-free, inherently superior and unchanging. On the other hand, traditionally Aboriginal English has been ignored or variously described as a non-language, a poor …

Winged Seed Songs: 32 Poems In Musical Forms & Musical Moods, Glen Phillips
ECU Books
Winged Seed Songs is a special selection of my poetry written over the last forty years or so. These poems were inspired in the main by listening to some of the world’s greatest musical works often performed in our remarkable Perth Concert Hall. I have always felt somewhat chastened by the poet’s achievements compared to those of the composer. The immediacy and universality of music’s appeal and its power to instantly induce very physical responses must make the poet envy this art form. I continue to crave the power to induce audience or reader responses as immediate and strong as …

Using Acl2 To Verify Loop Pipelining In Behavioral Synthesis, Disha Puri, Sandip Ray, Kecheng Hao, Fei Xie
Using Acl2 To Verify Loop Pipelining In Behavioral Synthesis, Disha Puri, Sandip Ray, Kecheng Hao, Fei Xie
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Behavioral synthesis involves compiling an Electronic System-Level (ESL) design into its RegisterTransfer Level (RTL) implementation. Loop pipelining is one of the most critical and complex transformations employed in behavioral synthesis. Certifying the loop pipelining algorithm is challenging because there is a huge semantic gap between the input sequential design and the output pipelined implementation making it infeasible to verify their equivalence with automated sequential equivalence checking techniques. We discuss our ongoing effort using ACL2 to certify loop pipelining transformation. The completion of the proof is work in progress. However, some of the insights developed so far may already be of …

Theorizing Billable Hours, Theresa M. Beiner
Theorizing Billable Hours, Theresa M. Beiner
Montana Law Review
This article looks at the ethical and diversity implications of high billable hour requirements. While corporate counsel have increasingly demanded a diverse legal workforce and emphasized the need to lower the costs of outside counsel, law firms have not responded to these concerns in a manner that is producing results. Instead, women continue to drop out of law firm practice at higher rates than their male counterparts and the costs of legal services remain high. High billable hour requirements exacerbate both these problems and have implications as well for ethical lawyering. Using data from a variety of disciplines, the article …
The Unrealistic Geographic Limitations Of The Supreme Court's School-Speech Precedents: Tinker In The Internet Age, Lee C. Baxter
The Unrealistic Geographic Limitations Of The Supreme Court's School-Speech Precedents: Tinker In The Internet Age, Lee C. Baxter
Montana Law Review
Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District is regarded as one of the most influential decisions of the United States Supreme Court. Tinker owes its distinguished status to its position as the Court’s first decision to affirmatively uphold students’ First Amendment rights and to the popularity of public school cases. These cases do, after all, draw more than their fair share of attention because “a single case can tremendously change longstanding community paradigms.” In time spent, public schools are a second home to most American children; hence, the rules applicable to schools vividly impact the country. The Tinker Court …

Treaty Termination And Historical Gloss, Curtis A. Bradley
Treaty Termination And Historical Gloss, Curtis A. Bradley
Faculty Scholarship
The termination of U.S. treaties provides an especially rich example of how governmental practices can provide a “gloss” on the Constitution’s separation of powers. The authority to terminate treaties is not addressed specifically in the constitutional text and instead has been worked out over time through political-branch practice. This practice, moreover, has developed largely without judicial review. Despite these features, Congress and the President—and the lawyers who advise them—have generally treated this issue as a matter of constitutional law rather than merely political happenstance. Importantly, the example of treaty termination illustrates not only how historical practice can inform constitutional understandings …

Improvements in muscular strength require an individual to train with progressively increased external loads over time. While it is well documented that the initial adaptations to strength training occur rapidly, previous researchers have not thoroughly examined the most effective means of inducing these changes. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability to add 2.27 kg to the barbell for 20 consecutive training sessions, and to compare these responses between the sexes. Thirty-four subjects ([mean ± SD age = 23 ± 3 years] men, n = 17; women, n = 17) participated in this study. The subjects were …

Leg Lean Mass Adaptations Following Short-Term Barbell Training In Women, Jacob A. Mota, Matt S. Stock, Kendra D. Olinghouse, Alexander S. Drusch, Brennan J. Thompson
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Participations in a resistance training program results in both neural adaptations and increases in lean body mass, the latter of which is considered a slow process. The majority of previous investigations that have examined the time course associated with muscular adaptations have utilized exercise machines or single-joint movements. Furthermore, the adaptations associated with resistance training in women are not as well understood as those for men. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of a four week resistance training intervention on changes in leg lean mass in untrained, college-aged women. Thirty-five women (mean ± SD age = …

Relationships Between Anthropometric And Performance Variables In Youth: Predictors Of Lower-Body Vertical Jump Peak Power, Alexander S. Drusch, Elias M. Carrillo, Jacob Adam Mota, Kendra D. Olinghouse, Matt S. Stock, Marc R. Lochbaum, Brennan J. Thompson
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Anthropometric and physical performance measurements are commonly used for identifying specific physical traits in youth. Laboratory-based tests (e.g., linear velocity transducers), while accurate, provide practical limitations due to high costs and technical necessities. Thus, commonly used field tests may be useful alternatives for assessing fitness/performance characteristics of youth. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between anthropometric measures and lower-and upper-body power and strength measures; and to assess the predictive ability of these measures for lower-body vertical jump peak power (PP) output in youth. Thirty-nine pre-adolescent (mean±SD, range: age=7.8±1.7, 5-12 years) children volunteered to participate in this …

This article comments on National League of Cities v. Usery, 426 U.S. 833 (1976) and the role played by Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. It argues that the decision did not constitute any “return” to “constitutional federalism” and that, despite claims to the contrary, its inspiration came from the political goals of the Court’s conservative Justices. More specifically it argues that Justice Powell’s role was not influenced simply by contemporary critiques that undermined the “political safeguards of federalism” theory but, rather, that Justice Powell’s political views likely shaped both his understanding of the “political safeguards” thesis and his rejection of …
The Hidden Daubert Factor: How Judges Use Error Rates In Assessing Scientific Evidence, John B. Meixner Jr., Shari Seidman Diamond
The Hidden Daubert Factor: How Judges Use Error Rates In Assessing Scientific Evidence, John B. Meixner Jr., Shari Seidman Diamond
Scholarly Works
In Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, the United States Supreme Court provided a framework under which trial judges must assess the evidentiary reliability of scientific evidence whose admissibility is challenged. One factor of the Daubert test, the “known or potential rate of error” of the expert’s method, has received considerably less scholarly attention than the other factors, and past empirical study has indicated that judges have a difficult time understanding the factor and use it less frequently in their analyses as compared to other factors. In this paper, we examine one possible interpretation of the “known or potential rate of …

An Analysis Of The Structure And Dynamics Of The Philippine Macroeconomy: Results From A Dsge-Based Estimation, Ruperto P. Majuca
DLSU Business & Economics Review
I use Bayesian methods to estimate a medium-scale closed economy dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model for the Philippine economy. Bayesian model selection techniques indicate that among the frictions introduced in the model, the investment adjustment costs, habit formation, and the price and wage rigidity features are important in capturing the dynamics of the data, while the variable capital utilization, fixed costs, and the price and wage indexation features are not important. I find that the Philippine macroeconomy is characterized by more instability than the U.S. economy. An analysis of the several subperiods in Philippine economic history also reveals some …

Liberalizing The Philippine Mining Industry: A Cge Approach Into Analyzing Its Sectoral Impacts On The Economy, Jesus Carlos Exequiel D. Castillo, Krista Danielle S. Yu
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The mining industry in the Philippines was once a promising venture that could contribute to the growth of output in the economy. Numerous legislations in support of mining in the Philippines that were passed through the years have proven ineffective in spurring development in the industry. Despite the spotted history of mining in the Philippines, the rising prices of precious metals in the world would seem that mining as a venue for output is as lustrous as ever. Due to the economic downturn in the mid 2000s, the markets turned their attention back to heavy investments in metals, causing most …

Martingales In Floating Asean+3 Currencies*, Cesar C. Rufino
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The martingale properties of the floating exchange rates of the ASEAN+3 region are analyzed in this study using contemporary (2000 to 2012) weekly data of inter-bank call rates. The main goal of the analysis is to see if informational efficiency is a feature floating (managed or independently floating) currencies in this coalition of countries still possess despite the current credit crisis and other economic shocks during the period. Employing relevant state-of-the-art econometric techniques, the study sets to empirically determine the presence of two important ingredients of informationally efficient market—the existence of the unit root component and the presence of uncorrelated …

Estimating The Efficiency Of Philippine Public High Schools Using Spatio-Temporal Stochastic Frontier Analysis, Michael Ralph M. Abrigo, Rouselle F. Lavado, Erniel B. Barrios, Brian C. Gozun
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper proposes a method for modeling production function of education using a stochastic frontier model with spatial temporal terms. Using a unique dataset that combines school achievement scores with school characteristics from 2005-2008, the efficiency of 4,900 public high schools in the Philippines in converting school inputs into test scores was estimated. Results show that the average inefficiency is at 41% and that there is a significant positive spatial externality in efficiency, which means that efficiency in one school can spill over to its neighbors. The model was found to be robust to various environmental variables included in the …

DLSU Business & Economics Review
The situation of a typical Filipino household, overseas employment, and the culture of migration are deemed as determinants for investing in higher education such as in the specialized fields of accountancy, education science and teacher training, engineering, and nursing. We examine both local and international labor demand for accountants, teachers, engineers, and nurses as well as its underlying implications on the exodus of professionals. As such, the determination of the internal rate of return to investment is of crucial importance to households to fully maximize educational opportunities and for the government and other institutions to confront this globally-changing situation. Using …

The Strategy Dilemma: Why Big Business Moves Seldom Pan Out As Planned, Niceto S. Poblador
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This article looks at the complex dynamics that underlie organizational change and attempts to explain why, under present uncertain environmental conditions, it is not possible to determine in advance the results of strategic moves made by businesses and other types of organizations. It discusses an alternative approach to strategy in today’s world of business and explores the practical applications of experimental methods to the management of change in today’s highly complex, extensively interconnected, and knowledge-driven world.
Predictors Of Patterns In Pediatric Pneumococcal Vaccine Uptake In Connecticut, 2000-2009, Aimee Marie Mead
Predictors Of Patterns In Pediatric Pneumococcal Vaccine Uptake In Connecticut, 2000-2009, Aimee Marie Mead
Public Health Theses
Introduction:
Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important human pathogen with more than 92 identified serotypes of varying invasiveness. Asymptomatic colonization of the nasopharynx can later cause diseases such as sinusitis, AOM, or IPD. Children under age five are the major reservoirs of infection. Pediatric conjugate vaccines effectively reduce vaccine-type carriage and disease. Vaccinating children can have indirect effects on adults.
Materials and Methods:
This paper used CIRTS to describe patterns of three- and four-dose PCV uptake throughout Connecticut in 2000 to 2009 birth cohorts. Spatial cluster analysis was used to detect any clusters with higher than expected proportions of unvaccinated children. …
Playforward: Elm City Stories Interactive Group-Based Curriculum: An Intervention On Hiv Risk Behaviors In Urban Racial And Ethnic Minority Youth, Anna North

There is a growing epidemic of HIV in young, racial and ethnic minority populations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008). PlayForward: Elm City Stories is an evidence-based, theory-driven videogame intervention developed by the Yale School of Medicine research group, play2PREVENT to impact HIV risk behaviors in urban racial and ethnic minority youth, ages 11-14 (play2PREVENT). The PlayForward: Elm City Stories intervention manual seeks to build on the videogame by adding an in-person group dimension to the individualized intervention. The manual provides a group-based interactive, in-person curriculum addressing decision-making and risk behaviors for HIV exposure among 11-14 year olds, and …
Household Food Insecurity And Obesity Risk In An Urban Slum In Brazil, Krysta Peterson
Household Food Insecurity And Obesity Risk In An Urban Slum In Brazil, Krysta Peterson
Public Health Theses
Background: The prevalence of obesity is growing among the poor. Household food insecurity (HFI) may partly explain this trend as individuals experiencing it may cope by consuming low-cost high calorie meals with little nutritive value. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of HFI, identify its risk factors, and assess the relationship with obesity among adults in an urban slum community in Salvador, Brazil.
Design: This cross-sectional study interviewed participants at home to assess socioeconomic status, demographics, HFI (measured by the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA)), and health. Anthropometric measurements (height, weight, waist circumference) of each respondent were taken to …
Predictors Of Babesia Microti Infection In Ixodes Scapularis Ticks In New England, Usa, Matthew David Phelps
Predictors Of Babesia Microti Infection In Ixodes Scapularis Ticks In New England, Usa, Matthew David Phelps
Public Health Theses
Babesia microti is the primary etiological agent of human babesiosis (Vannier & Krause). Although it shares the same tick vector and mammal reservoirs as B. burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, the geographic extent of B. microti is limited to a subset of the range of B. burgdorferi (Diuk-Wasser et al.). Despite the slower spread of B. microti, it is equally prevalent in ticks in certain areas where both B. burgdorferi and B. microti have been endemic for long periods. The slower rate of B. microti expansion as compared to B. burgdorferi has been attributed to a lower efficiency …
The Association Between Perceived Stress And Worse Adherence To Medical Discharge Instructions After Acute Myocardial Infarction, Qiaochu Qi
Public Health Theses
Objectives: This study prospectively followed a cohort of 349 individuals recovering from an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) to investigate the relationship between their perceived stress and their adherence to medical discharge instructions.
Background: Experiencing a heart attack is stressful, and stress post-MI leads to poor outcomes. Worse adherence to discharge instructions can be a pathway, but no prior research has investigated the impact of perceived stress on AMI patients' ability to comply with discharge instructions.
Methods: We assessed adherence to hospital discharge instructions over 12 months among 349 individuals who were hospitalized with AMIs. Linear mixed-effects regression model was used …
