Empirically Derived Effective Stiffness Expressions For Concrete Walls, Andrew Mock, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Laura Lowes, Dawn Lehman, Daniel Kuchma Jan 2014

Empirically Derived Effective Stiffness Expressions For Concrete Walls, Andrew Mock, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Laura Lowes, Dawn Lehman, Daniel Kuchma

Architectural Engineering

In most cases, analysis to determine component demands for seismic design of concrete buildings employs linear elastic models in which reduced, effective component stiffnesses are used. This document i) reviews the recommendations for defining the effective flexural, shear and axial stiffness of concrete walls that are included in current design codes, standards and guidelines and ii) compares these recommendations with stiffness expressions derived directly from experimental data by the authors and others. Section 2 reviews existing empirically derived and code‐, standard‐, and guideline‐based expressions for the effective stiffness of concrete walls. Section 3 presents the process used by the authors …

Summary Of Large-Scale C-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Wall Tests, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Andrew Mock, Laura Lowes, Dawn Lehman, Daniel Kuchma

Architectural Engineering

Flexural concrete walls (i.e., walls the yield in flexural prior to failure) are used commonly as the lateral load resisting system for mid‐ and high‐rise buildings on the West Coast. They are relatively stiff under service‐level loading, can take on various configurations to accommodate architectural constraints, and are generally assumed to exhibit ductile response under severe earthquake loading. Despite heavy reliance on concrete walls, relatively little research has been done to investigate the earthquake performance of walls with modern design details. Few data exist characterizing the performance of modern walls under variable levels of earthquake loading or the impact of …

Effects Of Zoledronic Acid On Osteoblasts In Three-Dimensional Culture, Flora Thibaut, Tanguy Watrin, Fleur Meary, Sylvie Tricot, Virginie Legros, Pascal Pellen-Mussi, Dominique Chauvel-Lebret

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Bisphosphonates (BPs) are synthetic drugs with antitumor and bone antiresorptive activities. The use of BPs is suspected to favor the emergence of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), a putative side effect whose pathogenesis remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to get insights about the impact of BPs on osteoblasts functions, using a three-dimensional (3D) culture model, which is suggested to be more similar to the in vivo tissues than monolayers. Materials and methods Effects of low (0.1 μM) and high (10 μM) concentrations of zoledronic acid were investigated on osteoblasts (hFOB 1.19), cultured as multicellular spheroids (MCS). Proliferation, apoptosis, …

Micro (Wind) Generation: 'Urban Resource Potential & Impact On Distribution Network Power Quality', Keith Sunderland Jan 2014

Micro (Wind) Generation: 'Urban Resource Potential & Impact On Distribution Network Power Quality', Keith Sunderland

Doctoral

Of the forms of renewable energy available, wind energy is at the forefront of the European (and Irish) green initiative with wind farms supplying a significant proportion of electrical energy demand. This type of distributed generation (DG) represents a ‘paradigm shift’ towards increased decentralisation of energy supply. However, because of the distance of most DG from urban areas where demand is greatest, there is a loss of efficiency. The solution, placing wind energy systems in urban areas, faces significant challenges. The complexities associated with the urban terrain include planning, surface heterogeneity that reduces the available wind resource and technology obstacles …

Keys To Understanding And Addressing Consumer Perceptions And Concerns About Processed Foods, Y. Meneses, K. J. Cannon, R. A. Flores

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Some processed food products have been targeted lately as “evils” that are preventing us from maintaining healthy lives. From the perspective of the food industry community, it seems as if this is one of those issues that should fade away with time, since the benefits of food processing are very obvious to us. We have never been so wrong! The challenges in front of us are big, and we need to do a better job of communicating with consumers about the benefits food processing offers, including increasing the availability of high-quality foods year round. We also need to promote the …

Profiling The Youth Leader: Personality And Emotional Intelligence Trends And Their Relationship To Leadership Skills, L. J. Mcelravy, Lindsay J. Hastings

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The transfer of leadership to younger generations is an important factor in agricultural communities and is likely one reason developing leaders is a central mission of many youth organizations, including 4-H and FFA. In adults, researchers have extensively explored the relationship between personality traits and leadership (Judge, Bono, Ilies, & Gerhardt, 2002), but a clear profile of youth leaders has not been developed. This profile could help in planning for and developing the next generation of community leaders. In this study, we explored the relationship between traits, including the Big-Five model of personality and emotional intelligence, and self-perceived leadership skills …

One of the approaches gaining ground in policy design is the implementation of combinations of policy measures as policy packages with the aim of increasing efficiency and effectiveness of the designed policies. In this paper, we describe the recent advancements in the developments of a virtual environment for the exploration and analysis of policy packages. The virtual environment uses an agent-based modelling approach for the generation of different configurations of policy measures in the policy packages. The benefit of using the approach is the proactive and flexible generation of policy packages as the agents can react to the changes that …

Styles, Strategies & Tasks: Are They Related?, Urarat Parnrod, Pornapit Darasawang, Wareesiri Singhasiri

PASAA

This qualitative study aims at investigating the relationship among cognitive styles, learning strategies and task. In order to determine the dominant cognitive styles of the subjects, questionnaires designed by Kolb (2005) were distributed to 778 engineering students. From the data analysis, it was found that two cognitive styles - 'diverger' and 'assimilator' are the dominant styles. This paper, therefore, focuses on two cases - one is a diverger and the other is an assimilator. The data show how engineering students from different dominant styles dealt with different subtasks, namely, note-taking, writing a story, and oral presentation under a 'Story Telling …

The findings showed a significant difference between the two groups' report of their use of the strategies in certain areas. Also, they …

Idea Sharing: Assessment In A Cooperative Learning Class, Siti Mina Tamah Jan 2014

Idea Sharing: Assessment In A Cooperative Learning Class, Siti Mina Tamah

PASAA

In Indonesia, it is common to see current classroom practices that incorporate the cooperative learning paradigm. In fact, there is a tendency to regard negatively a classroom without the label of 'cooperative learning' in which students are put into small groups. The current instructional practices then often make use of group work to encourage students to learn from one another in which they help and seek assistance from their fellow students besides from their teacher.

Idea Sharing: Introducing English As An International Language (Eil) To Pre-Service Teachers In A World English Course, Flora Debora Floris

PASAA

Today, English is truly regarded as an international language. It is the lingua franca in various international situations; it is also the most widely-learned and spoken second or foreign language in many countries. In recent years, the number of second and foreign language speakers has far exceeded the number of first language speakers of English. In fact, in 2008, the number of speakers of English reached a third of the world's population (Crystal, 2008).

Snapshots From The Margins: Transgressive Cosmopolitanisms In Europe, Feyzi Baban, Kim Rygiel Jan 2014

Snapshots From The Margins: Transgressive Cosmopolitanisms In Europe, Feyzi Baban, Kim Rygiel

Political Science Faculty Publications

Right-wing parties and governments in Europe have recently expressed greater hostility towards cultural pluralism, at times officially denunciating multiculturalism, and calling for the closure of borders and denial of rights to non-European nationals. Within this context, this article argues for rethinking Europe through radically transgressive and transnational understandings of cosmopolitanism as articulated by growing transnational populations within Europe such as immigrants, refugees, and irregular migrants. Transgressive forms of cosmopolitanism disrupt European notions of borders and identities in ways that challenge both liberal multiculturalism and assimilationist positions. This article explores the limits of traditional cosmopolitan thinking while offering a vision of …

Mechanism Design In M&A Auctions, Steven J. Brams, Joshua Mitts Jan 2014

Mechanism Design In M&A Auctions, Steven J. Brams, Joshua Mitts

Faculty Scholarship

The recent controversy over "Don't Ask, Don't Waive" standstills in M&A practice highlights the need to apply mechanism design to change-of-control transactions. In this Article, we propose a novel two-stage auction procedure that induces honest bidding among participants while potentially yielding a higher sale price than an open ascending, a sealed-bid first price, or a Vickrey second-price auction. Our procedure balances deal certainty with value maximization through the Nobel Prize-winning principle of incentive compatibility, making participation in the M&A auction and honest disclosure of reservation prices in the parties' interests rather than relying solely on heavy-handed ex-post enforcement. Moreover, the …

Health Rights In The Balance: The Case Against Perinatal Shackling Of Women Behind Bars, Brett Dignam, Eli Y. Adashi Jan 2014

Health Rights In The Balance: The Case Against Perinatal Shackling Of Women Behind Bars, Brett Dignam, Eli Y. Adashi

Faculty Scholarship

Rationalized for decades on security grounds, perinatal shackling entails the application of handcuffs, leg irons, and/or waist shackles to the incarcerated woman prior to, during, and after labor and delivery. During labor and delivery proper, perinatal shackling may entail chaining women to the hospital bed by the ankle, wrist, or both. Medically untenable, legally challenged, and ever controversial, perinatal shackling remains the standard of practice in most US states despite sustained two-decades-long efforts by health rights legal advocates, human rights organizations, and medical professionals. Herein we review the current statutory, regulatory, legal, and medical framework undergirding the use of restraints …

Social Entrepreneurship And Uncorporations, Jesse Finrock, Eric L. Talley Jan 2014

Social Entrepreneurship And Uncorporations, Jesse Finrock, Eric L. Talley

Faculty Scholarship

Larry Ribstein’s pioneering analysis of alternative business forms during the late twentieth century highlighted the contractarian freedom that these forms provided. The rise of the LLC model was of particular interest to Ribstein, who assessed how this model brought greater freedom to those who held duties and obligations within the corporate structure. This Article takes up Ribstein’s mantle by assessing the development the alternative “social enterprise” business forms manifested in benefit corporations (BC) and flexible purpose corporations (FPC). Both forms allow an incorporated entity to articulate and pursue a social benefit alongside the maximization of shareholder returns. Despite its utility, …

Neoliberal Constitutionalism: Lochnerism For A New Economy, Jedediah S. Purdy Jan 2014

Neoliberal Constitutionalism: Lochnerism For A New Economy, Jedediah S. Purdy

Faculty Scholarship

Neoliberalism has a constitutional face. It figures in judicial and popular interpretations of free speech, due process, equal protection, and federalism, as surely as it does in intellectual property, family law, health policy, and the other areas that our contributors address. In this article, I make the case that there is something special about the constitutional expression of neoliberalism, which arises from three features of constitutional law: its basicness, its breadth, and its integrating tendency.
