On The Evolution Of The Heavenly Spheres: An Enactive Approach To Cosmography, David Mcconville
On The Evolution Of The Heavenly Spheres: An Enactive Approach To Cosmography, David Mcconville
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The ability to view the world from multiple perspectives is essential for tackling complex, interconnected challenges. Yet conventional academic structures are designed to produce knowledge through ever-increasing specialization and compartmentalization. This fragmentation is often reinforced by tacit dualistic assumptions that prioritize linear thinking and abstract ways of knowing. Though the need for integrated approaches has been widely acknowledged, effective techniques for transcending disciplinary boundaries remain elusive. This thesis describes a practical strategy that uses immersive visualizations to cultivate transdisciplinary perspectives. It develops an enactive approach to cosmography, contending that processes of visualizing and interpreting the cosmos iteratively shape ‘views’ of …
Creative Responses To Maltese Culture And Identity: Case Study And Portfolio Of Compositions, Mariella Cassar
Creative Responses To Maltese Culture And Identity: Case Study And Portfolio Of Compositions, Mariella Cassar
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between place, identity and musical practice. The study is inspired by Malta’s history and culture. This work presents a portfolio of seven musical compositions with a written component that highlights the historical and socio-cultural issues that had a bearing on the works presented. A case study of the Maltese composer Charles Camilleri is also provided. Camilleri is both a great example of a composer for whom the articulation of national identity was a primary concern and a constant source of inspiration for the author of this thesis. The pieces presented …
The Impact Of Terrain On British Operations And Doctrine In North Africa 1940-1943., Neal Dando
The Impact Of Terrain On British Operations And Doctrine In North Africa 1940-1943., Neal Dando
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis focuses on the extent to which the physical terrain features across Egypt, Libya and Tunisia affected British operations throughout the campaign in North Africa during the Second World War. The study analyses the terrain from the operational and tactical perspectives and argues that the landscape features heavily influenced British planning and operations. These should now be considered alongside other standard military factors when studying military operations. This thesis differs from previous studies as it considers these additional factors from June 1940 until the Axis surrender in May 1943. Until now it has been widely assumed that much of …
The British Way Of War In North West Europe 1944-45: A Study Of Two Infantry Divisions, Louis Paul Devine
The British Way Of War In North West Europe 1944-45: A Study Of Two Infantry Divisions, Louis Paul Devine
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis will examine the British way of war as experienced by two British Infantry Divisions - the 43rd ‘Wessex’ and 53rd ‘Welsh’ - during the Overlord campaign in North West Europe in 1944 and 1945. The main locus of research centres on the fighting components of those divisions; the infantry battalions and their supporting regiments. In order to understand the way the British fought this part of the war, the thesis will consider the British Army’s history since 1918: its level of expertise at the end of the First World War; the impact of inter-war changes, and the experience …
Grassroots Capitalism Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Financial Risk In The Exempt Market And Love Equity Crowdfunding, Marco Figliomeni
Grassroots Capitalism Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Financial Risk In The Exempt Market And Love Equity Crowdfunding, Marco Figliomeni
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Crowdfunding represents a successful grassroots response to the funding gap present in many independent creative projects. While it traditionally operates on the basis of donations and rewards, the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) has proposed implementing equity crowdfunding, which would permit the online sale of corporate securities to retail investors. This paper posits that equity crowdfunding should be adopted in Ontario. The ensuing growth in capital markets will ultimately benefit the Canadian economy and, in particular, the entertainment sector. The OSC’s proposed regulatory framework for a crowdfunding prospectus exemption is a step in the right direction. The streamlined process makes it …
In Idi Amin’S Shadow: Women, Gender, And Militarism In Uganda, Alicia C. Decker
In Idi Amin’S Shadow: Women, Gender, And Militarism In Uganda, Alicia C. Decker
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
In Idi Amin’s Shadow is a rich social history examining Ugandan women’s complex and sometimes paradoxical relationship to Amin’s military state. Based on more than one hundred interviews with women who survived the regime, as well as a wide range of primary sources, this book reveals how the violence of Amin’s militarism resulted in both opportunities and challenges for women. Some assumed positions of political power or became successful entrepreneurs, while others endured sexual assault or experienced the trauma of watching their brothers, husbands, or sons “disappeared” by the state’s security forces. In Idi Amin’s Shadow considers the crucial ways …

Boredom And Memory For Positively And Negatively Valenced Words, James Kirchner
Boredom And Memory For Positively And Negatively Valenced Words, James Kirchner
Honors Theses
The purpose of the present study was to determine whether boredom affected memory for positively and negatively valenced words in addition to class names (e.g., History) that were presented in an auditory modality while participants listened to a recorded script. This was accomplished by comparing the recall of a doodling group, who were asked to shade in shapes while listening to a recorded script, with a non-doodling group, who simply listened to the script. The results indicated that participants in the non-doodling group recalled more class names (e.g. History) from the script than participants in the doodling group. In addition, …
Reconciling Brundibár: Practical Considerations For Producing Hans Krása’S Children’S Opera, Daniel W. Chetel
Reconciling Brundibár: Practical Considerations For Producing Hans Krása’S Children’S Opera, Daniel W. Chetel
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Brundibár, the children’s opera by Czech composer Hans Krása (1899–1944), is the story of two children who go to town to seek some milk to help their sick mother. When they arrive the children are bullied by the Brundibár, a mean adult who plays the organ grinder and takes the children’s money. To fight back against the overbearing Brundibár the children seek the help of the town’s young people—along with three fairy-tale animals—to make the town square a safe place again.
The piece was performed in 1942 by the children of Prague’s Jewish orphanage, and then presented with child singers …
Re-Thinking Paris At The Fin-De-Siècle: A New Vision Of Parisian Musical Culture From The Perspective Of Gabriel Astruc (1854-1938), Cesar A. Leal
Re-Thinking Paris At The Fin-De-Siècle: A New Vision Of Parisian Musical Culture From The Perspective Of Gabriel Astruc (1854-1938), Cesar A. Leal
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Gabriel Astruc (1864-1938), a French impresario of Jewish background, is mostly known for his collaborative work as an impresario with Sergei Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes. His role within Parisian musical culture at the fin de siècle, however, was much broader. He was a critic, creator of a leading periodical, producer of musical and circus events, music publisher, and associate of many important cultural figures of his day. Although Astruc has been mentioned in scholarly literature, his multifaceted activities have never been carefully studied.
Following the revisionist initiatives of previous scholars (e.g., Pasler, Huebner, Garafola, Fauser), this project offers …

Theses and Dissertations--Music
American mezzo-soprano, Beverly Wolff has not received the credit or respect that she deserves in operatic history. Her career began in 1952 and flourished until her retirement from the stage in 1981. Her intense characterizations, innate musicianship, and intelligence made her one of the most sought-after performers from the 1950s to the 1970s. For thirty years, she worked with some of the operatic world’s finest musicians, including Leonard Bernstein, Gian-Carlo Menotti, Samuel Barber, Ned Rorem, Beverly Sills, Norman Triegle, Placido Domingo, among others.
She was represented by Columbia Artists Management Inc (CAMI), one of New York’s oldest and most prestigious …
Commercializing The Digital Canvas: Renewing Rights Of Attribution For Artists, Authors, And Performers, Jon M. Garon
Commercializing The Digital Canvas: Renewing Rights Of Attribution For Artists, Authors, And Performers, Jon M. Garon
Texas A&M Law Review
Over the past two decades, a series of trends in constitutional and intellectual property have significantly reshaped the impact of traditional intellectual property laws for the art community. Attribution of a work to the artist and protection of the integrity of a work from alternation are historical bedrocks of artistic protections, but those protections have been diminished for digital artists. The Visual Artists Rights Act excludes digital works from the definition of works of visual art, thus excluding these works from rights of attribution and integrity. 3 At the time, rights of attribution and integrity were seen as quasi-trademark rights, …

Reconstructing The Contours Of The Copyright Originality And Idea- Expression Doctrines Regarding The Right To Deny Access To Works, Michael D. Murray
Texas A&M Law Review
Access to innovative scientific, literary, and artistic content has never been more important to the public than now, in the digital age. Thanks to the digital revolution carried out through such means as super-computational power at super-affordable prices, the Internet, broadband penetration, and contemporary computer science and technology, the global, national, and local public finds itself at the convergence of unprecedented scientific and cultural knowledge and content development, along with unprecedented means to distribute, communicate, and access that knowledge.
This Article joins the conversation on the Access-to-Knowledge, Access-to- Medicine, and Access-to-Art movements by asserting that the copyright restrictions affecting knowledge, …
Blending Informational Texts And Readers Theatre To Promote Authentic Inquiry, Dawan Coombs, Terrell A. Young
Blending Informational Texts And Readers Theatre To Promote Authentic Inquiry, Dawan Coombs, Terrell A. Young
Faculty Publications
Learning with informational texts doesn’t need to be restricted to the recall of information and facts; instead, challenging students to interpret and present their findings in the form of readers theatre performances requires the application of synthesis and analysis skills. This article frames informational texts and readers theatre as complimentary approaches that, when used together, address the demands of the reading, presenting, and writing standards of 21st century English language arts classrooms while also providing opportunities for students to write creativity. Through an example based on a student-directed inquiry of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the authors present an …

Yoruba Folktales, The New Media And Postmodernism, Sesan Azeez Akinwumi
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The Yoruba pristine orality in its entirety has been given new directions with the popularity of the postmodernist tenets as shown in the utilitarian use of the new media in literary production, dissemination and consumption. This paper seeks to examine how the postmodernist material and immaterial culture have influenced the literary and cultural values of Yoruba folktales. Data for this study are gathered through field investigations at Omi Adio, Aba Ebu ( Moniya) and Badeku, all in Oyo State, Nigeria. Archival documents on the subject matter are also consulted. It is observed that apart from affecting the physical and cultural …
Bringing Anime To Academic Libraries: A Recommended Core Collection, Laura Pope Robbins
Bringing Anime To Academic Libraries: A Recommended Core Collection, Laura Pope Robbins
Publications
The author discusses Japanese anime and manga in the context of academic libraries. She notes that, while collections support the study of popular culture and give students access to materials that will engage them...they fail to include amime.
To rectify this, the author discusses a core list of anime titles for academic library collection development. This list was assembled based upon the author’s twenty-plus years of viewing anime and is the culmination of a sabbatical in which the author studied the history of Japanese animation and read extensively from acknowledged experts in the field. The films included here have stood …

The Choice Is Yours! Researchers Assign Subject Metadata To Their Own Materials In Institutional Repositories, Maira Bundza
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
The Digital Commons platform for institutional repositories provides a three-tiered taxonomy of academic disciplines for each item submitted to the repository. Since faculty and departmental administrators across campuses are encouraged to submit materials to the institutional repository themselves, they must also assign disciplines or subject categories for their own work. The expandable drop-down menu of about 1,000 categories is easy to use, and facilitates the growth of the institutional repository and access to the materials through the Internet.

Chapman University is a private medium-sized liberal arts university located in Orange, California. With aspirations of national prominence, Chapman University is poised to enter the national stage in the United States and the university library will play an important role in this endeavor. One way that the library has demonstrated this commitment has been to create a scaffolded information literacy program that encourages lifelong-learning and provides instruction to our undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students.
A crucial element of any highly effective information literacy program is a diversified approach to assessment. The Leatherby Libraries sought out new ways to assess our …
