The Rainbow Sea Change: The Impact Of Popular Culture On Homosexual Rights., Bradford J. Kelley
The Rainbow Sea Change: The Impact Of Popular Culture On Homosexual Rights., Bradford J. Kelley
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The rainbow sea change in homosexual tolerance and acceptance occurring in recent decades has been largely driven by popular culture. Homosexuality, however, has not always received favorable treatment under United States law. In Bowers v. Hardwick, Georgia maintained that society had the right to express its moral disapproval of homosexuality through criminal laws. Nonetheless, messages conveyed in influential popular culture mediums exerted a demonstrable effect on the ways in which judges, legislators, and executive officials viewed homosexual legal issues and policy considerations. The Bowers decision would ultimately be overruled in 2003 by Lawrence v. Texas, decriminalizing homosexuality. The following year …
A Critical Race Theorist Account Of Corporate Racial Standing., Jonathan Bailyn
A Critical Race Theorist Account Of Corporate Racial Standing., Jonathan Bailyn
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Without guidance from the Supreme Court, federal circuits have been left to develop a patchwork of theories of corporate standing for racial discrimination. This patchwork of theories has ultimately resulted in an unstable doctrine, as each court applies a different theory of corporate and racial identity and, from a different premise, reach a different conclusion. To stabilize the doctrine of corporate racialization and resolving conflicting circuit outcomes, the Supreme Court should step in and determine when a corporation has standing to sue for racial discrimination. To properly respond to both the epistemological conundrum of race and the ontological conundrum of …

Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, Andrea M. Grey
Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, Andrea M. Grey
Theses
Andrea M. Grey’s thesis, Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, explores Blanche Dubois from Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire as a proto-feminist figure. Challenging traditional interpretations of Blanche as merely fragile or delusional, Grey argues that Blanche exhibits traits of modern feminism, advocating for female independence, financial self-sufficiency, and resistance to patriarchal oppression.
Blanche’s education, career as a teacher, and efforts to manage her family’s estate position her as an independent woman in a male-dominated world. However, societal constraints and gendered double standards undermine her agency. Her sexual autonomy is condemned while her male counterparts’ indiscretions are ignored. Blanche’s opposition …

After Life History: An Interview With Raiford Guins On His "Game After: A Cultural Study Of Video Game Afterlife", Samuel Tobin
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Raiford Guins is a professor of culture and technology in the Department of Cultural Analysis and Theory at Stony Brook University, he is also a curator of the William A. Higinbotham Game Studies Collection there. In his new book Game After, Guins draws on both of his professional roles, bringing a curator’s concerns to game and design history and a historian’s and critic’s attention to bear on game collections and collectors.
