Allied Unshackling: British, Canadian, And American Prisoner Of War Diplomacy During The Shackling Reprisals, 1942-43, Kiera Bridley
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Prisoner of war studies have largely focused their research on the experiences of the men and women within their captor countries. Although some country-specific work has been done regarding prisoner of war policy, there has been a significant gap in research regarding prisoner of war policy during the Second World War. This research focuses on the convergence of prisoner of war policy and diplomatic relations between Great Britain, Canada, and the United States during the shackling reprisals with Germany from 1942-43. The shackling reprisals represented the first conjunction of the three nations in diplomatic relations with Germany over the issue …
Second Amendment Decision Rules, Non-Lethal Weapons, And Self-Defense, A.J. Peterman
Second Amendment Decision Rules, Non-Lethal Weapons, And Self-Defense, A.J. Peterman
Marquette Law Review
General public debate about the Second Amendment has focused almost exclusively on the regulation of firearms. After Heller and McDonald, the scope of the Second Amendment’s protection has been hotly contested. One area of the Second Amendment that has been less discussed is the decisional rules that would govern non-firearms and levels of protection based on location. This Comment proposes two Second Amendment Constitutional decisional rules. Broadly, this Comment suggests that the “common use” test for “arms” should be modified for the development of new arms, such as non-lethal weapons, that are subject to the Second Amendment. The proposed …

Costume Design: A Vision From Paper To Reality, Caitlin Joye Moraska
Costume Design: A Vision From Paper To Reality, Caitlin Joye Moraska
Theses and Dissertations
What is art? Thomas Merton said, "Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time." This thesis is a detailed reflection of my process as a designer and how I have grown not only as a person but also, as an artist during my three years at the University of South Carolina. It describes my process and effort to refine my skills as a costume designer and to create the indelible world; that captures a plays mood, its characters, genre and time period.
Magdelena Abakanowicz stated that, "Art will remain the most astonishing activity of mankind …
A Response- 2014, Barbara Hardy
A Response- 2014, Barbara Hardy
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Against Marianne Burton's carefully argued case for the consummation of the Casaubon marriage are images and hints which I mentioned in The Appropriate Form: an Essay on the Novel' and Particularities: Readings in George Eliot,' especially: the Cadwallader and Chettam opinions: 'A great bladder for dried peas to rattle in, and 'no good red blood'; the onanistic echo of 'the seeds of joy are forever wasted', (Middlemarch, Ch. 42); Casaubon's lack of bliss; post-marital absence of expectations of issue; 'the way' in which 'years to come' ... might be filled with joyful devotedness' became less clear …
George Eliot And Psychosomatic Illness: A Footnote To The Biographies, Brenda Mckay
George Eliot And Psychosomatic Illness: A Footnote To The Biographies, Brenda Mckay
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
A reader of George Eliot's novels, with their luminous intelligence and authoritative command of a fictional world, might be surprised to learn that this author was actually frequently tormented by crises of confidence, exhaustion and bodily pain. Her illnesses were often exacerbated by her novel-writing; but certainly not always. '[M]y life’, as she wrote, 'has always been much broken by physical malaise'.' She later commented that, despite extensive medical tests, the doctors could find nothing wrong with her. The word 'malaise' suggests extreme somatic discomfort, not necessarily associated with disease, but also depression. Eliot herself was aware, as she acknowledged …
Review Of George Eliot In Context, Margaret Harris
Review Of George Eliot In Context, Margaret Harris
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
This collection offers a wide range of individual and rigorous criticism, with essays by the most informed specialists: amongst others, Margaret Harris on 'Biographies’, John Rignall on 'Landscape' and 'Metropolitanism’, Melissa Raines on 'Language', Leonee Ormond on 'The Visual Arts', Ruth Livesey on 'Class' and 'Transport', Joanne Shattock on 'Editions ' and 'Publishing and Publishers’, Richard Menke on 'Industry and technology'. Texts in context include journalism as well as fiction and poetry.
I have a few reservations. Most of the essays are remarkably condensed but one or two have more breadth than depth. In 'Travel and Tourism' Judith 10hnston touches …

Westgate Shootings: An Emergency Department Approach To A Mass-Casualty Incident, Benjamin Wachira, Ramadhani Abdalla, Lee Wallis
Emergency Medicine, East Africa
At approximately 12:30 pm on Saturday September 21, 2013, armed assailants attacked the upscale Westgate shopping mall in the Westlands area of Nairobi, Kenya. Using the seven key Major Incident Medical Management and Support (MIMMS) principles, command, safety, communication, assessment, triage, treatment, and transport, the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) emergency department (ED) successfully coordinated the reception and care of all the casualties brought to the hospital. This report describes the AKUH,N ED response to the first civilian mass-casualty shooting incident in Kenya, with the hope of informing the development and implementation of mass-casualty emergency preparedness plans by other …

Deletion Of Menaquinone (Vitamin-K) Biosynthetic Gene Mena Restores Ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q) Biosynthesis In Ubib Mutant Strain., Garrett Silo Carlson
Honors Capstones
It is well established that for aerobic growth E.coli requires either Menaquinone (MK), Ubiquinone (Q) or 2-octaprenyl-3-methyl-6- methoxy-1,4-benzoquinone (MMQ) as electron carrier to grow on glycerol minimal medium (GMM). Therefore, a double mutant strain blocked in both the MK and Q pathways shouldn’t grow on GMM. The following double mutant strains were tested for growth on GMM (A ubiE Amen A, AubiH Amen A, AubiF Amen A, AubiB AmenA and AyigP AmenA). Surprisingly, it was found that the AubiB AmenA mutant grew after a long lag and AubiF AmenA mutant grew as expected due to the Q pathway intermediate MMQ …

This session uses verbatim theatre techniques (Favorini, 1995; Saldaña, 2011) to expand stories from four narrative interviews shared by an accomplished, middle school teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. These stories were spoken the summer after the teacher’s tenth year and describe students she cared for and the challenges of her work. Audience members are given excerpts from the verbatim texts that make up the playscript when they walk in the door, and they are asked to use this material to discuss the show’s guiding question before and after the performance: “Can a teacher care too much and instruct too …

Discourses Of Inter-Expertise Creative Collaborative Performance In The Terra Nova Of Dublin’S Science Gallery, Diane Tangney, Olivia Freeman, Brendan O'Rourke
Conference papers
Discourses of creativity tempt us with promises of treasures from terra incognito (Cox, 2005). Creativity is central to the enterprise culture of our age and there is a dark side to such temptations (O'Rourke, 2010;Osborne, 2003; Rehn & De Cock, 2009). Creativity’s role in the enterprise culture may mean that like other aspects of enterprise culture, though many are called, few are chosen (Ainsworth & Hardy, 2008). This paper presents preliminary findings on data deriving from a larger project investigating creativity on the interactions between some special people that might be expected to be particularly creative (discipline experts from different …
