Linkage Banking And Outreach: A Case Of Microfinance Cooperatives In Tanzania, Esther Ishengoma Dec 2014

Linkage Banking And Outreach: A Case Of Microfinance Cooperatives In Tanzania, Esther Ishengoma

Business Management Review

While microfinance cooperatives (MFCs) involved in linkage banking has increased in order to overcome their financing gap and thus expand their outreach, studies associating microfinance institutions (MFIs) outreach with sustainability, cost efficiency and profitability signal the possibility of MFIs involved in linkage banking to reduce their outreach. Previous studies relating outreach to linkage banking are biased toward banking institutions. Based on semi-regression model applying primary data collected from 102 MFCs, this paper assesses the relationship between outreach and linkage banking. The results reveal missing and mixed effects of financial linkages on MFCs outreach. Explanations of these resultsinclude poor organisation of …

Geologic Analysis Of The Upper Jurassic Cotton Valley Formation In Jefferson County, Mississippi, James Michael Brooke Dec 2014

Geologic Analysis Of The Upper Jurassic Cotton Valley Formation In Jefferson County, Mississippi, James Michael Brooke

Theses and Dissertations

Though the Cotton Valley Group is productive in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, little is known about production potential of the Bossier Formation (Lower Cotton Valley Shale) in southwest Mississippi. The Bossier Formation in Jefferson County, Mississippi is an organic-poor, carbonate-rich mudrock with siliciclastic intervals. Examination of cuttings by petrographic and scanning electron microscopy revealed fractures that have been filled by calcite and poreilling pyrite. Porosity exists within and around pyrite framboids, in unfilled fractures, and within peloid grains. Organic matter is rare in Lower Cotton Valley samples suggesting it is not self-sourcing. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) values are low (0.86-1.1% …

Thermomechanical Performance Assessment of Bio-based PU Adhesives Derived from Castor Oil

An Abstract of the Thesis by

Anand V. Patel

Adhesives play a critical role in binding diverse materials, thereby promoting structural integrity and functional versatility across numerous daily applications. A significant challenge remains in developing polyurethane adhesives that exhibit exceptional bonding strength, as many are derived from petroleum products. To reduce dependence on non-renewable resources and offer sustainable and affordable alternatives, vegetable oils are being utilized to create a range of polyurethane adhesives. These oils are preferred due to their low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, and reduced environmental impact. This research …

Who Decides? A Study Of The Effects On Decision Unit Dynamics In Crisis And Crisis Transition, Janet Leigh Drake Dec 2014

Who Decides? A Study Of The Effects On Decision Unit Dynamics In Crisis And Crisis Transition, Janet Leigh Drake

Dissertations

Foreign policy decision-making is often an obscured process, particularly when it involves threats to national security or national interests. Despite the lack of transparency, though sometimes necessary, foreign policy decisions can have far-reaching consequences. Policymakers establish and affect relationships with other governments, and can commit state resources for cooperation or for conflict. The purpose of this study is to determine what types of decision units make foreign policy decisions and what factors influence the dynamics of the unit. I employ the decision units (DU) framework developed by Margaret Hermann to decisions made by the United States and Israel during the …

Developing, Implementing, And Evaluating A No-Child-Left-Inside Pilot Program, Claudia Radel, Jamie C. Brand, Roslynn Brain Dec 2014

Developing, Implementing, And Evaluating A No-Child-Left-Inside Pilot Program, Claudia Radel, Jamie C. Brand, Roslynn Brain

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

We describe experience with a pilot week-long, No-Child-Left-Inside (NCLI), outdoor program implemented in Cache Valley, Utah, in 2012. Through response analysis of a “pre-then-post” children's survey and a parent-completed demographic survey, we assess program effectiveness in raising children's enthusiasm for nature-related behaviors and in reaching a target audience of all local families. The program reached many families with low participation in other conservation programs but failed to reach families from the growing Latino population. Participating children experienced increased excitement to spend more time outdoors exploring and learning, accomplishing NCLI goals of laying a groundwork for children's enhanced environmental literacy.

An Examination Of The Predictors Of General Recidivism, Violent Recidivism, And Property Recidivism Among Juvenile Offenders, Megan Suzanne Stubbs-Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

Although studies examining juvenile recidivism have focused primarily on violent recidivism, the factors that predict recidivism likely differ by offense type. To examine general, property, and violent recidivism, this study combined individual-level data (i.e., offender and case characteristics) from the Mississippi Youth Court Information Data System (MYCIDS) for the years 2009-2011 and contextual-level data (i.e., county characteristics) from the 2010 U.S. Census and the 2010 Uniform Crime Reports (UCR). Results showed that offender characteristics predicted only general and property recidivism, but case characteristics mattered for all three types (i.e., general, violent, and property recidivism). Contextual characteristics (i.e., the percentage of …

Molecular And Proteomic Analysis Of Components Involved In Abscisic Acid (Aba) Signaling Network, Jie Song Dec 2014

Molecular And Proteomic Analysis Of Components Involved In Abscisic Acid (Aba) Signaling Network, Jie Song

Theses and Dissertations

Abscisic acid is an important plant hormone in the responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, which also regulates various growth and developmental processes in plants. Three major components-receptors (PYRs), the PP2C type phosphatases and the SnRK2 subtype kinases form a double negative regulatory system: PYR/PYL/RCARs inhibit the activity of PP2Cs while PP2Cs inhibit that of SnRK2s in ABA signaling pathway. The results of my studies showed that ABA would directly affect the interaction between SnRK2.2 and ABI1 in absence of PYRs. Furthermore, ABA can inhibit the catalytic activity of the SnRK2.2 kinase. These findings indicated that ABA may directly interact …

A New Fluid-Structure Interaction Point-Projection Method, Philip Robert Ivancic Dec 2014

A New Fluid-Structure Interaction Point-Projection Method, Philip Robert Ivancic

Theses and Dissertations

A new point-projection method was developed to transfer loads and displacements in a two-way coupled fluid-structure interaction problem. The existing method involved projecting the load at each computational fluid dynamics (CFD) node onto a corresponding computation structural dynamics (CSD) element. The load is distributed to the CSD nodes on that element. However, the solution is not unique and will vary the projection. In the new method, a rigid pyramid element is built upon the CSD element and that encompasses the CFD node. Thus, the CFD load will be uniquely distributed to the CSD nodes. After the CSD code updates the …

Trauma As Evangelical Anti-Abortion Strategy: A Qualitative Study Of Post Abortion Groups And The Personhood Amendment In Mississippi, Jonelle Henry Husain Dec 2014

Trauma As Evangelical Anti-Abortion Strategy: A Qualitative Study Of Post Abortion Groups And The Personhood Amendment In Mississippi, Jonelle Henry Husain

Theses and Dissertations

Post-abortion support groups are a new sub-movement or strategy of the broader anti-abortion movement that provide support to women who understand their prior abortions as problematic. These groups construct abortion as a form of trauma that causes post-abortion syndrome (PAS), a broad array of negative mental health and behavioral problems similar to post-traumatic stress disorder. Although these claims are not substantiated by empirical evidence, claims that abortion causes PAS are increasingly featured in the public domain to bolster national anti-abortion claims that abortion represents a public health issue. A majority of PAS support groups are offered by crisis pregnancy centers …

Effects Of Resveratrol On Post-Thaw Quality Of Stallion Sperm, Kelli Lynn Matheny

Theses and Dissertations

Current equine sperm cryopreservation methods fail to reliably prevent damages to important cellular structures such as the cell membrane and DNA. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of supplementing a stallion semen extender with 1 or 10 mM resveratrol on post-thaw sperm characteristics. Results showed that sperm death was increased with 10 mM compared to both the control and 1 mM (P < 0.05). DNA fragmentation was increased in the 1 mM treatment compared to the control (P < 0.05). ROS activity was reduced the most in the 10 mM with differences between all groups (P < 0.05). Membrane integrity was not different between groups (P > 0.05). Motility of the control was higher than the treatment groups (P < 0.05). Resveratrol was able to reduce ROS but was unable to preserve motility or viability at the concentrations tested.
