Bodily Knowledge In Dance Transferred To The Creation Of Sculpture, Nazare Feliciano
Bodily Knowledge In Dance Transferred To The Creation Of Sculpture, Nazare Feliciano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The main focus of this dissertation is a discussion of how an artist uses her dance bodily knowledge to develop in a static art form a more bodily sense of movement. For this purpose this dissertation examines four clay sculptures by contemporary artist Mary Frank. The analysis suggests that the uncharacteristic sense of movement displayed in these works derives from her experiential knowledge of dance. This sense of movement is achieved through the considered assemblage and inextricable relationship between Frank’s dance bodily knowledge (body knowledge a dancer acquires through years of dance practice) and the manipulation of clay, the plastic …

The highly complex role of the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) requires the refinement of a multitude of competencies and leadership skills in this unprecedented time of healthcare reform. As the senior most patient advocate in our medical centers the CNO is responsible for translating research into practice, policy development and implementation creating value based patient-centric strategies to transform health care. The ability to sustain and thrive in this role is essential in repositioning nursing as a knowledgeable discipline actively contributing to the redesign of healthcare. This exploratory descriptive phenomenological study was designed to explore and describe the elements that contribute …
Bulk Diffusion Of High Performance Concrete Specimens Exposed To Different Levels Of Sodium Chloride And Seawater, Wendy J. Arias
Bulk Diffusion Of High Performance Concrete Specimens Exposed To Different Levels Of Sodium Chloride And Seawater, Wendy J. Arias
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance to chloride penetration of specimens made with three base compositions (three different supplementary cementitious materials) and water to cementitious ratios of 0.35, 0.41, or 0.47. The specimens were subjected to bulk diffusion test or full immersion. The mixes were exposed to 0.1 M, 0.6 M, or 2.8 M sodium chloride solution for different periods of time. Also, partially immersed specimens were exposed to indoor and outdoor exposures (tidal, splash, barge). Chloride concentration profiles were obtained and the apparent diffusion coefficient was calculated. The skin effect was found only on some …
Understanding Behavioral Antitrust, Avishalom Tor
Understanding Behavioral Antitrust, Avishalom Tor
Journal Articles
Behavioral antitrust – the application to antitrust analysis of empirical evidence of robust behavioral deviations from strict rationality – is increasingly popular and hotly debated by legal scholars and the enforcement agencies alike. This Article shows, however, that both proponents and opponents of behavioral antitrust frequently and fundamentally misconstrue its methodology, treating concrete empirical phenomena as if they were broad hypothetical assumptions. Because of this fundamental methodological error, scholars often make three classes of mistakes in behavioral antitrust analyses: First, they fail to appreciate the variability and heterogeneity of behavioral phenomena; second, they disregard the concrete ways in which markets, …
Case Report: Elder Mistreatment, Eric Lutzwick
Case Report: Elder Mistreatment, Eric Lutzwick
Theses and Dissertations
Elder maltreatment is a widespread and growing healthcare problem in the United States. The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) defines elder mistreatment as "intentional actions that cause harm or create a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable elder by a caregiver or other person who stands in a trust relationship to the elder. This includes failure by a caregiver to satisfy the eider's basic needs or to protect the elder from harm". This paper is going to examine a case report highlighting the difficulties that healthcare providers must overcome in order to diagnose elder maltreatment as well as …

Yield And Timing Constrained Spare Tsv Assignment For Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits, Yu Guang Chen, Kuan Yu Lai, Ming Chao Lee, Yiyu Shi, Wing Kai Hon
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Through Silicon Via (TSV) is a critical enabling technique in three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs). However, it may suffer from many reliability issues. Various fault-tolerance mechanisms have been proposed in literature to improve yield, at the cost of significant area overhead. In this paper, we focus on the structure that uses one spare TSV for a group of original TSVs and study the optimal assignment of spare TSVs under yield and timing constraints to minimize the total area overhead. We show that such problem can be modeled through constrained graph decomposition. An efficient heuristic is further developed to address this …
On The Deployment Of On-Chip Noise Sensors, Tao Wang, Chun Zhang, Jinjun Xiong, Yiyu Shi
On The Deployment Of On-Chip Noise Sensors, Tao Wang, Chun Zhang, Jinjun Xiong, Yiyu Shi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Runtime noise management systems can enforce power integrity without significantly increasing design margins. These systems typically respond to on-chip noise sensors to accurately capture voltage emergencies. Unfortunately, it remains an open problem in the literature how to optimally place a given number of noise sensors for best voltage emergency detection, or how to best set the threshold voltage for these sensors. In this paper, we formally define the problem of noise sensor placement along with a novel sensing quality metric to be maximized. We then put forward an efficient algorithm to solve it, which is proven to attain the best …
Calcite Dissolution Under Turbulent Flow Conditions: A Remaining Conundrum, Matthew D. Covington
Calcite Dissolution Under Turbulent Flow Conditions: A Remaining Conundrum, Matthew D. Covington
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
A significant body of experimental and theoretical work has examined the dissolution rates of calcite, and other carbonate minerals, under varying chemical and hydrodynamic conditions (see Morse & Arvidson (2002) for a comprehensive review). The relationships derived from this work have been applied extensively to the development of mechanistic models of speleogenesis (e.g. Dreybrodt 1996; Dreybrodt et al. 2005; Birk et al. 2005; Rehrl et al. 2008; Kaufmann 2009; Szymczak & Ladd 2011). However, the primary focus of these models has been on the early stages of cave formation, with less attention toward the later stages of cave evolution and …
How Corporations Manage Industry And Consumer Expectations Via The Csr Report, Sarah Bonewits Feldner, Kati Tusinski Berg
How Corporations Manage Industry And Consumer Expectations Via The Csr Report, Sarah Bonewits Feldner, Kati Tusinski Berg
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
With increased stakeholder scrutiny, it is increasingly salient to consider how corporations make the case that their CSR activities are sufficient, appropriate, and successful. The CSR report is the vehicle by which organizations communicate the breadth of activities they engage in to make a difference in society. Using rhetorical analysis and surveys, we argue that the CSR report functions as a means by which corporations manage stakeholder expectations and seek to legitimate corporate behaviors. Our findings indicate that most reports are structured based on external guidelines but include the use of classic rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos to …
The Short-Term Effects Of A Routine Poisoning Campaign On The Movements And Detectability Of A Social Top-Predator., B L. Allen, R. M. Engeman, L. K-P. Leung
The Short-Term Effects Of A Routine Poisoning Campaign On The Movements And Detectability Of A Social Top-Predator., B L. Allen, R. M. Engeman, L. K-P. Leung
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Top-predators can be important components of resilient ecosystems, but they are still controlled in many places to mitigate a variety of economic, environmental and/or social impacts. Lethal control is often achieved through the broadscale application of poisoned baits. Understanding the direct and indirect effects of such lethal control on subsequent movements and behaviour of survivors is an important pre-requisite for interpreting the efficacy and ecological outcomes of top predator control. In this study, we use GPS tracking collars to investigate the fine-scale and short-term movements of dingoes (Canis lupus dingo and other wild dogs) in response to a routine poison-baiting …

Toxicokinetics And Coagulopathy Threshold Of The Rodenticide Diphacinone In Eastern Screech-Owls (Megascops Asio), Barnett A. Rattner, Katherine E. Horak, Rebecca S. Lazarus, David A. Goldade, John J. Johnston
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
In the United States, new regulations on second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides will likely be offset by expanded use of first-generation anticoagulant rodenticides. In the present study, eastern screech-owls (Megascops asio) were fed 10 mg diphacinone/g wet weight food for 7 d, and recovery was monitored over a 21-d postexposure period. By day 3 of exposure, diphacinone (DPN) was detected in liver (1.63 mg/g wet wt) and kidney (5.83 mg/g) and coagulopathy was apparent. By day 7, prothrombin time (PT) and Russell’s viper venom time (RVVT) were prolonged, and some individuals were anemic. Upon termination of exposure, coagulopathy and anemia were resolved …

Detecting An Elusive Invasive Species: A Diagnostic Pcr To Detect Burmese Python In Florida Waters And An Assessment Of Persistence Of Environmental Dna, Antoinette J. Piaggio, Richard M. Engeman, Matthew W. Hopken, John S. Humphrey, Kandy L. Keacher, William E. Bruce, Michael L. Avery
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Recent studies have demonstrated that detection of environmental DNA (eDNA) from aquatic vertebrates in water bodies is possible. The Burmese python, Python bivittatus, is a semi-aquatic, invasive species in Florida where its elusive nature and cryptic coloration make its detection difficult. Our goal was to develop a diagnostic PCR to detect P. bivittatus from water-borne eDNA, which could assist managers in monitoring this invasive species. First, we used captive P. bivittatus to determine whether reptilian DNA could be isolated and amplified from water samples. We also evaluated the efficacy of two DNA isolation methods and two DNA extraction kits commonly …
New York Police Department Stop, Question, And Frisk Program: Experiences Across Race And Gender, Thomas Mrozla
New York Police Department Stop, Question, And Frisk Program: Experiences Across Race And Gender, Thomas Mrozla
Theses and Dissertations
There is an ongoing discussion on how race influences the likelihood of police contact. The findings of the existing literature on how race influences the likelihood of contact with the police is fairly mixed. Although much literature exists on race alone, we know little about how different policing strategies are experienced by males and females. This research explores the effect that a suspect's gender and race will have on the likelihood that a stop will result in the suspect being frisked, arrested, or have force used against them in the five boroughs of New York City. The data for this …
Heterogeneous Immunological Landscapes And Medieval Plague : An Invitation To A New Dialogue Between Historians And Immunologists., Fabian Crespo, Matthew B. Lawrenz
Heterogeneous Immunological Landscapes And Medieval Plague : An Invitation To A New Dialogue Between Historians And Immunologists., Fabian Crespo, Matthew B. Lawrenz
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Efforts to understand the differential mortality caused by plague must account for many factors, including human immune responses. In this essay we are particularly interested in those people who were exposed to the Yersinia pestis pathogen during the Black Death, but who had differing fates—survival or death—that could depend on which individuals (once infected) were able to mount an appropriate immune response as a result of biological, environmental, and social factors. The proposed model suggests that historians of the medieval world could make a significant contribution to the study of human health, and especially the role of human immunology in …
Self-Esteem, Emotions And Relationships, Kristyn Smith
Self-Esteem, Emotions And Relationships, Kristyn Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Presently there is a lack of research examining how geographical differences may related to different manifestations of hook up culture. Females from rural communities' were focused on in order to try to account for the gap in literature focusing on whether females' affect and self-esteem predicted future hook-up behaviors. Among young females, those who are from a rural community engage in hook-ups more frequently than those from an urban area; as well as report negative experiences within the community after they engage in a hook-up. The relationship between female's self-esteem and their intent to participate in a hook-up in the …

The direction of any theatrical production is fraught with challenges and opportunities for growth. In textual analysis and research of Neil Simon's Rumors and directing methods, skills were developed to better direct the University of North Dakota Theatre Department's 2014 production of Rumors. The project culminated in a well-received production of Rumors that challenged the student/actors of UND to learn a farcical style of acting and the director to stage, communicate style, and organize a fully mounted production.
A Comparison Of Solar Prominence Data Between Hα And Euv (He Ii-304Å), Jonathan Schiralli
A Comparison Of Solar Prominence Data Between Hα And Euv (He Ii-304Å), Jonathan Schiralli
Theses and Dissertations
Two spectral lines are often used to observe solar prominences: Hα and He II 304 Å. Both emission lines capture the same prominence structure but at vastly different temperatures: Hα is visible at ~10,000K while He II 304 Å. at ~80,000K. The He II 304 Å images provide the ability to identify the relatively hotter outer region of a prominence, although they lack the details seen in the cooler lower regions. Hα conversely shows great detail in the cooler lower regions of a prominence but lack any detail in the hotter outer region of a prominence. Two prominences will be …
Determinants Of Gold Returns: An Austrian Perspective, Justin Nicholas Theriot
Determinants Of Gold Returns: An Austrian Perspective, Justin Nicholas Theriot
Theses and Dissertations
In this article, I offer a comprehensive analysis on the factors that influence the gold market in relation to returns to demonstrate that gold moves as a currency. I employed a wide range of macroeconomic and commodity variables to investigate the underlying movements in the gold market. The methodology followed four simple steps; 1) correlation tests, 2) vector autoregression model of two lags, 3) auto-regressive integrated moving average model and 4) generalized autoregressive conditional heoteroskedasticity. This methodology enabled me to
convey that gold moves more as a currency and not as an investment. The main findings of this paper provided …
Analysis Of Multi-Platform Mobile Application Development, Courtney B. Thaden
Analysis Of Multi-Platform Mobile Application Development, Courtney B. Thaden
Theses and Dissertations
The variety of mobile devices and their operating platforms has rapidly increased. With this increase come separate standards, programming languages, and distribution markets. Typically developers want to deliver their products to a variety of users encompassing various platforms; however choosing to develop using a native program for a platform can delay the development and release on another platform. Multi-platform development applications were created in order to deploy applications to various platforms in a more timely and cost efficient manner by using a single code base.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the multi-platform development applications MoSync, Appcelerator, and …
Study Of The Suit Inflation Effect On Crew Safety During Landing Using A Full-Pressure Iva Suit For New-Generation Reentry Space Vehicles, Suzuki Wataru
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, manned space capsules have been recognized as beneficial and reasonable human space vehicles again. The Dragon capsule already achieved several significant successes. The Orion capsule is going to be sent to a high-apogee orbit without crews for experimental purposes in September 2014. For such human-rated space capsules, the study of acceleration impacts against the human body during splashdown is essential to ensure the safety of crews. Moreover, it is also known that wearing a full pressure rescue suit significantly increases safety of a crew, compared to wearing a partial pressure suit. This is mainly because it enables the use …
Application And Prospect Of Orthogonal On-Off Keying As An Error Control Coding In Laser Communication, Tasbirun Nahian Upal
Application And Prospect Of Orthogonal On-Off Keying As An Error Control Coding In Laser Communication, Tasbirun Nahian Upal
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis work, a bandwidth efficient coded modulation technique has been proposed for LASER based communication. It offers reliable error correction and bandwidth optimization for free space connectivity. Laser communication has been emerging as a potential alternative of Radio Frequency (RF) communication for long-haul connectivity. It provides several advantages over RF systems. Some of specific advantages are its high speed data transfer, higher bandwidth, robust security, immunity to electromagnetic interference, lower implementation cost. However, as any other communication system, it requires an error control system that detects and corrects error in the data transmission. The proposed technique blends well …

Genetic Engineering, A Hope For Sustainable Biofuel Production : Review., Sudip Paudel, Michael Menze
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The use of recently developed genetic engineering tools in combination with organisms that have the potential to produce precursors for the production of biodiesel, promises a sustainable and environment friendly energy source. Enhanced lipid production in wild type and/or genetically engineered organisms can offer sufficient raw material for industrial transesterification of plant-based triglycerides. Bio-diesel, produced with the help of genetically modified organisms, might be one of the best alternatives to fossil fuels and to mitigate various environmental hazards.
Restoration, Presence And Computer Use: How Computer Displays Incorporating Restorative Environments Effect Users' Sense Of Restoration And Presence, Jacob Bell
Theses and Dissertations
Recent technological advances provide opportunities for computer users to replace
desktop pictures with dynamic, audio-visual recordings. Such advances provide researchers with opportunities to better understand how specific video content may effect users' sense of restoration and presence. As described within Attention Restoration Theory, those perceiving restorative environments, which are found primarily within nature-based environments, experience a sense of restoration. Yet, prior research has largely focused on singular, and to an extent, non-interactive displays of restorative environments. The current research further investigated the restorative potential of environments having incorporated interactive, computer-based displays, with animated audio-visual environments. Participants were assigned to either …

Investigating The Effects Of Ocean Bubbles On Enhanced Aqua-Modis Aerosol Optical Depth Retrievals In The Mid-To-High Latitude Southern Oceans, Matt Christensen
Investigating The Effects Of Ocean Bubbles On Enhanced Aqua-Modis Aerosol Optical Depth Retrievals In The Mid-To-High Latitude Southern Oceans, Matt Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
While satellite remote sensing aerosol measurements are widely used for climate, visibility and air quality studies, issues exist in the current satellite aerosol products such as the Elevated Southern Oceans Anomaly (ESOA) phenomenon. The ESOA is an elevated aerosol optical depth (AOD) belt over high latitude southern oceans detected by passive satellites such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR). The ESOA feature, however, is not present in the ground based studies. Cloud contamination was found to have a significant impact on this anomaly, but it is not the only contributor. Wind generated ocean bubbles …
Affect Dysregulation As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma And Comorbid Substance Use Disorder And Bulimia Nervosa, Brianna Joelle Crawford
Affect Dysregulation As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma And Comorbid Substance Use Disorder And Bulimia Nervosa, Brianna Joelle Crawford
Theses and Dissertations
Eating disorders are serious, potentially life-threatening psychiatric disorders associated with a variety of negative medical, social, and psychological consequences. Comorbid mental disorders, such as substance use disorders, present an increasingly complex clinical picture. A significant body of research has been devoted to investigating the etiology of eating disorders and their comorbid conditions. One factor that has received research attention is that of childhood trauma experiences. Childhood trauma has been related to the development of both bulimia nervosa and substance use disorders, and more broadly, an impulsive, behaviorally dysregulated trajectory. Affect dysregulation is one factor proposed to play a role in …

Grade Level Retention: A Comparative Study Of Beliefs And Practices In North Dakota And Surrey, Kim Englund
Theses and Dissertations
Many regions of the United States retain students who are not performing at grade level, yet a large body of research shows the ineffectiveness of having students repeat an academic year. The United Kingdom practices social promotion rather than retention. This comparative study sought to better understand the practices in these two countries and the research surrounding retention. First, it compared the interventions before and alternatives to retention used by both a North Dakota school district in the United States and two schools in Surrey, England. Second, it outlined a plan for teachers, parents, school administrators, and school policy makers …
Trauma Experiences And Symptoms Reported By American Indian And Caucasian Sex Offenders, Regina Sioux Ertz
Trauma Experiences And Symptoms Reported By American Indian And Caucasian Sex Offenders, Regina Sioux Ertz
Theses and Dissertations
American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) people are known to have a history of man-made trauma that corresponds to the colonization of the Americans. Trauma experienced by AI/AN sex offenders has not been evaluated in the research as it relates to their treatment planning. The lack of data reflecting intervention needs for AI/AN sex offenders is problematic. The current study hypothesized that American Indian sex offenders would report a greater number of trauma experiences, endorse increased symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), display more traumatic cognitions, and endorse higher dissociative experiences than Caucasian sex offenders. Statistical results yielded did not support the …
Evaluation Of Cmip5 Simulated Clouds And Toa Radiation Budgets Using Nasa Satellite Observations, Erica Kay Dolinar
Evaluation Of Cmip5 Simulated Clouds And Toa Radiation Budgets Using Nasa Satellite Observations, Erica Kay Dolinar
Theses and Dissertations
A large degree of uncertainty in global climate models (GCMs) can be attributed to the representation of clouds and how they interact with incoming solar and outgoing longwave (Earth emitted) radiation. In this study, the simulated total cloud fraction (CF), cloud water path (CWP), top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation budgets and cloud radiative forcings (CRFs) from 28 CMIP5 AMIP models are evaluated and compared to multiple satellite observations from CERES, MODIS, ISCCP, CloudSat, and CALIPSO. The multimodel ensemble mean CF (58.6 %) is, on global average, under estimated by nearly 7 % compared to CERES-MODIS (CM) and ISCCP results, with an even …
