Modeling The Performance Of A Laser For Tracking An Underwater Dynamic Target, Thomas J. Dill Jan 2014

Modeling The Performance Of A Laser For Tracking An Underwater Dynamic Target, Thomas J. Dill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Options for tracking dynamic underwater targets using optical methods is currently limited. This thesis examines optical reflectance intensities utilizing Lambert’s Reflection Model and based on a proposed underwater laser tracking system. Numerical analysis is performed through simulation to determine the detectable light intensities based on relationships between varying inputs such as angle of illumination and target position. Attenuation, noise, and laser beam spreading are included in the analysis. Simulation results suggest optical tracking exhibits complex relationships based on target location and illumination angle. Signal to Noise Ratios are a better indicator of system capabilities than received intensities. Signal reception does …

Mobile Docking Of Remus-100 Equipped With Usbl-Aps To An Unmanned Surface Vehicle: A Performance Feasibility Study, Mario Ii Miranda Jan 2014

Mobile Docking Of Remus-100 Equipped With Usbl-Aps To An Unmanned Surface Vehicle: A Performance Feasibility Study, Mario Ii Miranda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The overall objective of this work is to evaluate the ability of homing and docking an unmanned underwater vehicle (Hydroid REMUS 100 UUV) to a moving unmanned surface vehicle (Wave-Adaptive Modular Surface Vehicle USV) using a Hydroid Digital Ultra-Short Baseline (DUSBL) acoustic positioning system (APS), as a primary navigation source. An understanding of how the UUV can rendezvous with a stationary USV first is presented, then followed by a moving USV. Inherently, the DUSBL-APS is susceptible to error due to the physical phenomena of the underwater acoustic channel (e.g. ambient noise, attenuation and ray refraction). The development of an APS …

New York's Little Syria, 18810-1935, Gregory J. Shibley Jan 2014

New York's Little Syria, 18810-1935, Gregory J. Shibley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis argues that, from 1880 to 1935, Syrian immigrants, who comprised an enclave on the Lower West Side of Manhattan in New York City, sought to control the pace and extent of their assimilation into mainstream American society, by distancing themselves from their ethnicity, or by using their ethnicity to their advantage, or by combining both approaches to varying degrees, as they determined individually, rather than monolithically.

Serum chemistries values were also compared between free-ranging Bald Eagle and Osprey nestling in Florida Bay estuary in southern Florida (Chapter 2). There were significant differences between serum values of Bald Eagle and …

Multi-Scale Characterization Of Dissolution Structures And Porosity Distribution In The Upper Part Of The Biscayne Aquifer Using Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr), Gregory J. Mount Jan 2014

Multi-Scale Characterization Of Dissolution Structures And Porosity Distribution In The Upper Part Of The Biscayne Aquifer Using Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr), Gregory J. Mount

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The karst Biscayne aquifer is characterized by a heterogeneous spatial arrangement of porosity, making hydrogeological characterization difficult. In this dissertation, I investigate the use of ground penetrating radar (GPR), for understanding the spatial distribution of porosity variability in the Miami Limestone presented as a compilation of studies where scale of measurement is progressively increased to account for varying dimensions of dissolution features. In Chapter 2, GPR in zero offset acquisition mode is used to investigate the 2-D distribution of porosity and dielectric permittivity in a block of Miami Limestone at the laboratory scale (< 1.0 m). Petrophysical models based on fully saturated and unsaturated. water conditions are used to estimate porosity and solid dielectric permittivity of the limestone. Results show a good correspondence between analytical and GPR-based porosity estimates and show variability between 22.0-66.0 %. In Chapter 3, GPR in common offset and common midpoint acquisition mode are used to estimate bulk porosity of the unsaturated Miami Limestone at the field scale (10.0-100.0 m). Estimates of porosity are based on the assumption that the directly measured water table reflector is flat and that any deviation is attributed to changes in velocity due to porosity variability. Results show sharp changes in porosity ranging between 33.2-60.9 % attributed to dissolution areas. In Chapter 4, GPR in common offset mode is used to characterize porosity variability in the saturated Biscayne aquifer at 100-1000 m field scales. The presence of numerous diffraction hyperbolae are used to estimate electromagnetic wave velocity and asses both horizontal and vertical changes in porosity after application of a petrophysical model. Results show porosity variability between 23.0-41.0 % and confirm the presence of isolated areas that could serve as enhanced infiltration or recharge. This research allows for the identification and delineation areas of macroporosity areas at 0.01 m lateral resolution and shows variability of porosity at different scales, reaching 37.0 % within 1.3 m, associated with areas of enhanced dissolution. Such improved resolution of porosity estimates can benefit water management efforts and transport modelling and help to better understand small scale relationships between ground water and surface water interactions.

Development And Testing Of An Instrument To Measure Holistic Attributes Of Nurse Practitioner Care, Elizabeth V. Kinchen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

With passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the publication of the Institute of Medicine’s report on the future of nursing, nurses are slated to take on an expanded role in primary healthcare delivery in the near future. Nurse practitioners, in particular, will be instrumental in filling the gap in primary care availability engendered by the increasing specialization of physician practice and increased access to healthcare made possible by the provisions of the PPACA. The need for this study was identified through gaps in the literature related to nurse practitioner practice; specifically, the paucity of quantitative …

Decade Of Progress: Origins Of The Pérez Art Museum Miami, Erica Ando Jan 2014

Decade Of Progress: Origins Of The Pérez Art Museum Miami, Erica Ando

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation reconstructs and investigates the origins of the Pérez Art Museum Miami. In 2013, the museum re-opened in a new, county-funded building to great acclaim and international attention, but the museum’s origins in the 1970s have been largely forgotten. A result of the 1972 “Decade of Progress” bond vote by county taxpayers that allocated funds to build a new art museum, the museum opened as the Center for the Fine Arts in 1983 as a non-collecting institution dedicated to displaying traveling exhibitions. The new institution represented the combined efforts of local government, business, and art to construct not only …

Development And Application Of A New Comprehensive Image-Based Classification Scheme For Coastal And Benthic Environments Along The Southeast Florida Continental Shelf, Christopher Makowski Jan 2014

Development And Application Of A New Comprehensive Image-Based Classification Scheme For Coastal And Benthic Environments Along The Southeast Florida Continental Shelf, Christopher Makowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The coastal (terrestrial) and benthic environments along the southeast Florida continental shelf show a unique biophysical succession of marine features from a highly urbanized, developed coastal region in the north (i.e. northern Miami-Dade County) to a protective marine sanctuary in the southeast (i.e. Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary). However, the establishment of a standard bio-geomorphological classification scheme for this area of coastal and benthic environments is lacking. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis and answer the research question of whether new parameters of integrating geomorphological components with dominant biological covers could be developed and applied across …

Molecular dynamics is a computer simulation technique for expressing the ultimate details of individual particle motions and can be used in many fields, such as chemical physics, materials science, and the modeling of biomolecules. In this thesis, we study visualization and pattern mining in molecular dynamics simulation. The molecular data set has a large number of atoms in each frame and range of frames. The features of the data set include atom ID; frame number; position in x, y, and z plane; charge; and mass. The three main challenges of this thesis are to display a larger number of atoms …

Optimal Chunk-Based Resource Allocation For Ofdma Systems With Multiple Ber Requirements, Tianzhou He Jan 2014

Optimal Chunk-Based Resource Allocation For Ofdma Systems With Multiple Ber Requirements, Tianzhou He

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In wireless orthogonal frequency division multiple-access (OFDMA) standards, subcarriers are grouped into chunks and a chunk of subcarriers is made as the minimum allocation unit for subcarrier allocation. We investigate the chunk-based resource allocation for OFDMA downlink, where data streams contain packets with diverse bit-errorrate (BER) requirements. Supposing that adaptive transmissions are based on a number of discrete modulation and coding modes, we derive the optimal resource allocation scheme that maximizes the weighted sum of average user rates under the multiple BER and total power constraints. With proper formulation, the relevant optimization problem is cast as an integer linear program …

Perceived Risk Versus Actual Risk To Sea-Level Rise: A Case Study In Broward County, Florida, Keren P. Bolter Jan 2014

Perceived Risk Versus Actual Risk To Sea-Level Rise: A Case Study In Broward County, Florida, Keren P. Bolter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Global climate change stressors downscale to specific local vulnerabilities, requiring customized adaptation strategies. Southeast Florida has a high likelihood of sealevel rise impact to due to the low-lying porous limestone geology. High risk is coupled with high exposure due to high-valued coastal properties, productive ecosystems, and dense populations. Coastal populations are particularly at risk due to erosion, inundation and storm surge, but interior populations are also susceptible to rising water tables and extended periods of inundation. All of these impacts are amplified by sea-level rise. Robust sea-level rise adaptation options require significant economic costs. If perceived risk does not adequately …

Rain-Wind-Induced Cable Vibrations In Cable-Stayed Bridges, Oscar F. Calle Jan 2014

Rain-Wind-Induced Cable Vibrations In Cable-Stayed Bridges, Oscar F. Calle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This research is aimed at investigating and analyzing the rain-windinduced cable vibration phenomena experienced in cables of cable-stayed bridges and also the countermeasures employed by engineers to mitigate the large-amplitude vibration problem reported by various researchers around the world. In order to investigate the problem of the water rivulet creation at the top of the cable surface, a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) analytical model was developed and analyzed. This thesis studies the aerodynamic instability of cables in cable-stayed bridges by doing literature review of a typical in-situ test, developing a single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) analytical model, and an ANSYS finite element model. Furthermore, …

Pubertal Timing As A Moderator Of The Associations Between Parental Restrictiveness And Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, Daniel J. Dickson Jan 2014

Pubertal Timing As A Moderator Of The Associations Between Parental Restrictiveness And Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, Daniel J. Dickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Adolescent alcohol abuse increases across the adolescent years. If left unchecked, alcohol abuse can give rise to delinquency, poor grades, and risky sexual behavior (Stueve & O’Donnell, 2005; Ellickson, Tucker, & Klein, 2003). Past research suggests that minimal parental oversight increases the risk for adolescent alcohol abuse. There is also evidence, however, that parents withdraw from oversight in the face of adolescent problem behaviors (Barber & Olsen, 1997; Hafen & Laursen, 2009). Each may vary according to the child’s physical development. Parents may respond to pubertal maturation with reduced supervision and early maturing girls may be sensitive to parent supervision …

Reliability And Validation Study Of The Online Instinctual Variant Questionnaire, Sherry Andre Jan 2014

Reliability And Validation Study Of The Online Instinctual Variant Questionnaire, Sherry Andre

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Leaders often manage both chaos and diversity. We can improve our leadership effectiveness by better understanding our motives and behaviors, and those of our followers. A potential tool for leadership development is the Instinctual Variant Questionnaire (IVQ). Based on Enneagram theory (pronounced “ANY-a-gram”), this online instrument is designed to assist users in identifying how three behavioral drives, or variants, may be helping or hindering their dispositions. Each reside in us, but one typically dominates, one supports, and one tends to impede our behaviors and motives. Through an understanding of one’s variants and order of preference, it is possible to increase …

Public-Private Partnerships And Questions In Public Procurement, Adam Williams Jan 2014

Public-Private Partnerships And Questions In Public Procurement, Adam Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study explores the connections of public procurement official perceptions of public-private partnerships and their contracting decisions for public infrastructure projects. Detailed discussion of previous scholarship and its focus on policymaking and project evaluation of public-private partnerships leaves a gap in the public policy process – implementation. Procurement officials are presented in the role of policy implementers rather than agents in a principalagent approach. This attempts to address a shortcoming of the description that these officials do nothing more than purchase. Arguments are put forth that these officials are given additional levels of discretion when faced with contracting decisions. Specifically, …

Prognostic Copd Healthcare Management System, Piyush Jain Jan 2014

Prognostic Copd Healthcare Management System, Piyush Jain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Hospital readmission rates are considered to be an important indicator of quality of care because they may be a consequence of actions of commission or omission made during the initial hospitalization of the patient, or as a consequence of poorly managed transition of the patient back into the community. The negative impact on patient quality of life and huge burden on healthcare system have made reducing hospital readmissions a central goal of healthcare delivery and payment reform efforts. In this project, we will focus on COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) which is one of the leading causes of disability and …

Linking Masks With Majora: The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’S Mask And Noh Theater, Sterling Anderson Osborne Jan 2014

Linking Masks With Majora: The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’S Mask And Noh Theater, Sterling Anderson Osborne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The field of video game studies is young and requires innovation in its approach to its object of study. Despite the large number of Japanese games and game developers, most scholars in the West approach video games from a point of view that emphasizes Western thought and that is concerned with either very recent video games or the medium as a whole. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask defies Western interpretations as its inspiration and aesthetics are steeped in a Japanese theatrical tradition that dates to the early Middle Ages, namely Noh theater. The game’s emphasis on masks and possession …

Leveled Flight Control Of An Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Operating In A Wave Induced Environment, Joshua J. Potesta Jan 2014

Leveled Flight Control Of An Unmanned Underwater Vehicle Operating In A Wave Induced Environment, Joshua J. Potesta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) depth control methods typically use a pressure sensor to measure the depth, which results in the AUV following the trajectory of the surface waves. Through simulations, a controller is designed for the Ocean Explorer AUV with the objective of the AUV holding a constant depth below the still water line while operating in waves. This objective is accomplished by modeling sensors and using filtering techniques to provide the AUV with the depth below the still water line. A wave prediction model is simulated to provide the controller with knowledge of the wave disturbance before it is …

Linking Institutional, Economic, Technological And Cultural Context To Entrepreneurship In Regions Of Europe, Aycan Kara Jan 2014

Linking Institutional, Economic, Technological And Cultural Context To Entrepreneurship In Regions Of Europe, Aycan Kara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Researchers and policy makers consider entrepreneurship to be a major source of economic development and competitiveness. Determinants of entrepreneurship have been studied at individual, regional and national levels. Even though research indicates that variation in the levels of entrepreneurship across regions within nations is greater than the national differences and that these differences persist over time (Bosma & Schutjen 2009, 2011; Fritsch & Mueller 2006; Sternberg 2004; Tamásy 2006), we still do not know the full range of regional level determinants of entrepreneurship. I drew from Wennekers’ (2006) framework and link two lines of research (international entrepreneurship and international management) …

Postglacial Expansion Of Rhizophora Mangle L. In The Caribbean Sea And Florida, John Paul Kennedy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) was a period of massive range contraction for numerous taxa, including the water-dispersed mangrove species, Rhizophora mangle L. Following the LGM, R. mangle expanded poleward via propagule transport by ocean currents. In this study, we use microsatellite loci to characterize the genetic structure of nine R. mangle populations and compare potential expansion pathways that resulted in the colonization of the Florida peninsula and Caribbean islands. Results show comparatively greater genetic connectivity between the Caribbean mainland and Florida, a similar pattern between West Africa and Caribbean islands, and substantial admixture on the island of San Salvador, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The numerical method presented in this study attempts to predict the mean, non-uniform flow field upstream of a propeller partially immersed in a thick turbulent boundary layer with an actuator disk using CFD based on RANS in ANSYS FLUENT. Three different configurations, involving an infinitely thin actuator disk in the freestream (Configuration 1), an actuator disk near a wall with a turbulent boundary layer (Configuration 2), and an actuator disk with a hub near a wall with a turbulent boundary layer (Configuration 3), were analyzed for a variety of advance ratios ranging from J = 0.48 to J =1.44. CFD …

Potential Stimulus Contributions To Counterchange Determined Motion Perception, Cynthia Louise Smith Park Jan 2014

Potential Stimulus Contributions To Counterchange Determined Motion Perception, Cynthia Louise Smith Park

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Prior research has explored the counterchange model of motion detection in terms of counterchanging information that originates in the stimulus foreground (or objects). These experiments explore counterchange apparent motion with regard to a new apparent motion stimulus where the necessary counterchanging information required for apparent motion is provided by altering the luminance of the background. It was found that apparent motion produced by background-counterchange requires longer frame durations and lower levels of average stimulus contrast compared to foreground-counterchange. Furthermore, inter-object distance does not influence apparent motion produced by background-counterchange to the degree it influences apparent motion produced by foreground-counterchange.

Power And Legitimacy In The Medieval Muslim World: The Career Of Imad Al-Din Zengi (1085-1146), Nicholas D. Belotto Jan 2014

Power And Legitimacy In The Medieval Muslim World: The Career Of Imad Al-Din Zengi (1085-1146), Nicholas D. Belotto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

While known for his accomplishments surrounding the Fall of Edessa in 1144, the career of Imad al-Din Zengi receives little coverage in the modern Historiography on the Crusades. Even though the careers of other famous Muslim warriors during the Crusading period tend to overshadow his accomplishments, Zengi had a remarkable career which provided him the opportunities to advance his own agenda within the larger Saljuq political structure. This structure allowed Zengi the opportunity to establish power within the Levant (modern day Syria, Iraq). Zengi succeeded in further stabilizing his own military position through manipulation of both political relationships and religious …

Mind The Gap: Buck Angel And The Implications Of Transgender Male In/Visibility, Emilija Stanic Jan 2014

Mind The Gap: Buck Angel And The Implications Of Transgender Male In/Visibility, Emilija Stanic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis explores the implications of visibility and invisibility of transgender people, their constructed bodies, and how these bodies are used for both personal empowerment and education. By using various gender theorists for support, I argue that the transgender male body obtains power through visibility. Despite the many obstacles transgender males face, putting their bodies in a space of visibility gives them both personal power and the power to educate others about their bodies and sexuality. In doing a study of the human body and the different definitions applied to it, I show how we, as a society, are restricted …

Martial Arts As A Markup Language, Thomas Vo Jan 2014

Martial Arts As A Markup Language, Thomas Vo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis describes the modeling of Martial Arts as a markup language. Up until now Martial Arts has already been documented in books, videos, tradition and other methods. Though to represent Martial Arts knowledge consistently and uniformly in a digital era, we introduce the Martial Arts Markup Language (MAML), which is based on XML. Because XML provides a standardized, serializable and portable format, MAML also enables sharing among students, teachers and their peers across different platforms, media and networks. MAML provides the ability, with appropriate XML tools, to document a Martial Arts style in a structured way. To achieve this, …

Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase (Msr) Deficiency Leads To A Reduction Of Dopamine Levels In Drosophila, Caesar Hernandez Jan 2014

Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase (Msr) Deficiency Leads To A Reduction Of Dopamine Levels In Drosophila, Caesar Hernandez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Biological homeostasis relies on protective mechanisms that respond to cellular oxidation caused primarily by free radical reactions. Methionine sulfoxide reductases (Msr) are a class of enzymes that reverse oxidative damage to methionine in proteins. The focus of this study is on the relationship between Msr and dopamine levels in Drosophila. Dopaminergic neurons in Drosophila have comparable roles to those found in humans. A deficit in dopamine leads to the onset of many neurological disorders including the loss of fine motor control—a neurodegenerative condition characteristic of Parkinson’s disease (PD). We found that dopamine levels in the heads of MsrAΔ/ΔBΔ/Δ mutants are …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Knowledge of the geospatial distribution of vegetation is fundamental for resource management. The objective of this study is to investigate the possible use of airborne LIDAR (light detection and ranging) data to improve classification accuracy of high spatial resolution optical imagery and compare the ability of two classification algorithms to accurately identify and map wetland vegetation communities. In this study, high resolution imagery integrated with LIDAR data was compared jointly and alone; and the nearest neighbor (NN) and machine learning random forest (RF) classifiers were assessed in semi-automated geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) approaches for classification accuracy of heterogeneous vegetation …

Chloride Penetration Into Concrete Structures Exposed To The Marine Atmosphere, Scott Thompson Shill Jan 2014

Chloride Penetration Into Concrete Structures Exposed To The Marine Atmosphere, Scott Thompson Shill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Chloride ions present in the marine atmosphere contained in marine aerosols is investigated for a relationship with chloride that accumulated into concrete. Chloride profiles are conducted on several concrete mixes containing fly ash, silica fume, and slag, with water to cementitious ratios of 0.35, 0.41, and 0.47. The chloride accumulation in concrete samples exposed to the environment is investigated with relation to the chloride deposition from the marine atmosphere measured via the wet candle test. Results indicate a possible relationship for the total accumulated chloride in the concrete with the accumulated chloride deposition (wet candle). Over the exposure periods, concrete …
