But as precedents survive like the clavicle in the cat, long after the use they once served is at an end, and the reason for them has been forgotten, the result of following them must often be failure and confusion from the merely logical point of view.

The Ford Model A was advertised as “the latest and best” in the world in 1903 and sparked global interest to design and create better, faster, and more complex machines than had ever traveled on land. Fast forward to the 21st century and creating machines that can travel around the world’s airspace appears to be the latest fascination. Until relatively recently, only airplanes and helicopters dominated the friendly skies. But now, the public is catching on to the idea that building an aircraft is easier that one might expect. In fact, a pilot is no longer necessary. Drones, also referred …

Stockbrokers are subject to one of the most comprehensive public disclosure regimes. They must disclose substantial information about their backgrounds, their employment history, and their disciplinary history. FINRA, the self-regulatory organization that regulates the brokerage industry, also requires that brokers disclose customer complaints and makes much of this information available to the public through an online database called BrokerCheck. The allegations of wrongdoing remain on the broker’s record permanently, unless the broker succeeds at having customer dispute information expunged. The broker is able to accomplish this by requesting that the arbitration panel that hears the customer dispute grant expungement, and …

The French adoption of a corporate board quota for women reflects Europe’s increasingly stakeholder-oriented approach to corporate governance, one that stands in marked contrast with that of the United States. This Article discusses how the corporate board quota will shift French and European corporate governance. The change accentuates an already established stakeholder corporate culture widespread in Europe, most notably evidenced by the presence of worker representation on boards. In contrast, the United States’ corporate governance structure increasingly places the shareholder at its center. The proliferation of quotas for women on corporate boards in the national and transnational European contexts is …

High Hopes: Fostering A Culture Of Hope At A Community College, Mary Wells, Emily Gilbert, Lisa Mahle-Grisez, Reece Newman, Kathy Rowell
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
A recent report from the American Association of Community Colleges indicates that about half of first-year students do not return for a second year, and 35% of students withdraw despite having an A or B average. These students may have particularly challenging circumstances, such as juggling family and work obligations along with school. The authors suggest that students’ sense of “hopefulness” forecasts their academic success and persistence, and offer an account of their ongoing campus-wide efforts to create more hopeful classrooms and experiences for their students.

The relationships between adolescent ethnic identity and attitudes toward school and school climate are investigated in a small, multiracial/multiethnic city in the Great Lakes region with ethnically diverse adolescents taught by primarily White teachers. The mixed methods investigation of 986 eighth through eleventh grade students during the 2010-2011 academic year suggests that the relationship between ethnic identity and attitude toward school is a complex interaction among individual characteristics of ethnicity/race, ethnic identity, gender, and ecological context. Quantitative results reveal that White female and Hispanic and African American male students exhibit strong ethnic identity that correlates positively with school attitude; however, …
Teacher Evaluation And The Problem Of Professional Development, Mark A. Smylie
Teacher Evaluation And The Problem Of Professional Development, Mark A. Smylie
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
During the past 10 to 15 years, nearly every state and school district across the nation has begun to dramatically overhaul their evaluation systems for teachers. Such evaluation systems are ultimately aimed at improving teachers’ instructional practices. However, the evidence on the efficacy and effectiveness of these systems is weak and equivocal at best. One of the major factors associated with the lack of impact of these systems is the troublesome relationship between evaluation and professional development – the opportunities for teachers to learn and improve their practice in response to and beyond the process of evaluation itself. Policies governing …

Development Of An Improved Rna Interference Vector System For Agrobacterium-Mediated Plant Transformation, Umut Toprak, Cathy Coutu, Doug Baldwin, Martin Erlandson, Dwayne Hegedus
Turkish Journal of Biology
Plant-mediated RNA interference (RNAi) has shown a great potential in pest control and requires i) subcloning of sense/antisense regions in compatible vectors, ii) transfer of the silencing cassette into a binary vector, iii) transformation of Agrobacterium tumefaciens with desired binary plasmids, and iv) transformation of plants with Agrobacterium. The procedure is long and should ensure plasmid backbone stability; however, plasmid recombination due to antibiotic selection is a common problem. pGSA1252 is an RNAi silencing binary vector allowing direct cloning of hairpin structure; however, it possesses a chloramphenicol selection marker leading to plasmid recombination in various Agrobacterium strains. To solve this …

Turkish Journal of Biology
A high-quality and low-cost genomic DNA isolation method is needed for use in microbiology laboratories. In this study, we developed a new modified guanidinium isothiocyanate method to isolate DNA from Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype Typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus and compared it with 4 other DNA isolation methods. The results show that the modified guanidinium isothiocyanate method developed in our laboratory is simple, fast, and inexpensive and yields DNA whose quality and quantity are similar to that of 2 commercial extraction kits but far better than 2 conventional DNA extraction methods used for comparison.
