Evolutionary computation is applied to many domains and one of the most important is data mining. Data mining is a relatively broad field that deals with the automatic knowledge discovery from databases and it is one of the most developed fields in the area of artificial intelligence. Classification is a data mining method that assigns items in a collection to target classes with the goal to accurately predict the target class for each item in the data. Genetic programming (GP) is one of the …

A New Coupling Metric: Combining Structural And Semantic Relationships, Mamdouh Khalaf Alenezi Jan 2014

A New Coupling Metric: Combining Structural And Semantic Relationships, Mamdouh Khalaf Alenezi

Computer Science

Maintaining object-oriented software is problematic and expensive. Earlier research has revealed that complex relationships among object-oriented software entities are key reasons that make maintenance costly. Therefore, measuring the strength of these relationships has become a requirement to develop proficient techniques for software maintenance. Coupling, a measure of the interdependence among software entities, is an important property for which many software metrics have been defined. It is widely agreed that the level of coupling in a software product has consequences for its maintenance. In order to understand which aspects of coupling affect quality or other external attributes of software, this dissertation …

Simple Identity Manager, Sunil Kolluru

Computer Science

Identity management is a key area for any enterprise. Maintaining user profiles, including e-mail, passwords, and other personal information, and providing a way to manage them is ubiquitous for any company. Specifically, one could not rule out the necessity of basic operations, such as creating a user profile, modifying it, changing the password, finding/resetting a forgotten password, finding a forgotten userID, and enabling/disabling a user account. Identity management is observed on any website that needs credentials to login. Companies are investing millions of dollars in identity management products because, the corporations are aware that it is inevitable. This paper presents …

Anemia, or low blood hemoglobin (Hgb) levels, afflicts 2 billion people worldwide. Currently, Hgb levels are typically measured from blood samples using hematology analyzers, which are housed in hospitals, clinics, or commercial laboratories and require skilled technicians to operate. A reliable, inexpensive point-of-care (POC) Hgb test would enable cost-effective anemia screening and chronically anemic patients to self-monitor their disease. We present a rapid, standalone, and disposable POC anemia test that, via a single drop of blood, outputs color-based visual results that correlate with Hgb levels.

METHODS. We tested blood from 238 pediatric and adult patients with anemia of varying …

A Comparative Study Of Nuclear Power Risk Perceptions With Selected Technological Hazards, David Edwin Duff Jan 2014

A Comparative Study Of Nuclear Power Risk Perceptions With Selected Technological Hazards, David Edwin Duff

Emergency Management

How people perceive risk or threats is important to many disciplines that seek to assist policy makers in developing policies, regulations and laws. Using the previous work of Slovic et al. (Fischhoff, Slovic, Lichtenstein, Read and Combs, 2000; Slovic P., 1992; Slovic, Fischhoff, and Lichtenstein, 2000) in development of the psychometric paradigm, a sample of residents (n=600) from a region with a large number of nuclear reactors was surveyed. The question set was expanded to include demographic questions to determine if they impact risk perception. Two aspects of risk perception were examined, perception of overall risk and perception of riskiness …

Chemistry Students’ Attitudes About Peer-Led Team Learning Workshops: Comparison To The Six Critical Components, A.E. Dreyfuss, Janet Liou-Mark, Leo Gafney

Publications and Research

While tracking students’ performance and perseverance is important to determine the effect of the incorporation of workshops in courses, little has been published on students’ attitudes toward workshops: How do students feel about PLTL workshops? One method of examining this question is through a questionnaire developed by Gafney. This paper will present the results of a three-semester study using this questionnaire on how students view workshop in their introductory chemistry courses.

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Real-time sensing and computing technologies are increasingly used in the delivery of real-time health behavior interventions. Auditory signals play a critical role in many of these interventions, impacting not only behavioral response but also treatment adherence and participant retention. Yet, few behavioral interventions that employ auditory feedback report the characteristics of sounds used and even fewer design signals specifically for their intervention. This paper describes a four-step process used in developing and selecting auditory warnings for a behavioral trial designed to reduce indoor secondhand smoke exposure. In step one, relevant information was gathered from ergonomic and behavioral science literature to …

Disability, Repressive Regimes, And Health Disparity: Assessing Country Conditions In North Korea, Jae-Chun Won, Janet E. Lord, Michael Ashley Stein, Yosung Song Jan 2014

Disability, Repressive Regimes, And Health Disparity: Assessing Country Conditions In North Korea, Jae-Chun Won, Janet E. Lord, Michael Ashley Stein, Yosung Song

Articles

This article examines the potential of international human rights standards to account for heightened risk and vulnerability to human rights abuses for persons with disabilities in politically repressive environments. We offer a preliminary assessment of whether and how a disability-cognizant accounting of human rights in repressive regimes can lead to a more credible and comprehensive understanding of disability in such contexts. In so doing, we make the case for a more thorough and thoughtful application of international disability rights standards to better inform human rights investigations, transitional justice approaches, and international criminal law proceedings. To illustrate this methodology, we analyze …

Our Records Panopticon And The American Bar Association Standards For Criminal Justice, Stephen E. Henderson Jan 2014

Our Records Panopticon And The American Bar Association Standards For Criminal Justice, Stephen E. Henderson

Oklahoma Law Review

“Secrets are lies. Sharing is caring. Privacy is theft.” So concludes the main character in Dave Egger’s novel, The Circle, in which a single company that unites Google, Facebook, and Twitter—and on steroids—has the ambition not only to know, but also to share, all of the world’s information. It is telling that a current dystopian novel features not the government in the first instance, but instead a private third party that, through no act of overt coercion, knows so much about us. This is indeed the greatest risk to privacy in our day, both the unprecedented, massive collection and retention …

Allosteric Regulation Of The Hsp90 Dynamics And Stability By Client Recruiter Cochaperones: Protein Structure Network Modeling, Kristin Blacklock, Gennady M. Verkhivker Jan 2014

Allosteric Regulation Of The Hsp90 Dynamics And Stability By Client Recruiter Cochaperones: Protein Structure Network Modeling, Kristin Blacklock, Gennady M. Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The fundamental role of the Hsp90 chaperone in supporting functional activity of diverse protein clients is anchored by specific cochaperones. A family of immune sensing client proteins is delivered to the Hsp90 system with the aid of cochaperones Sgt1 and Rar1 that act cooperatively with Hsp90 to form allosterically regulated dynamic complexes. In this work, functional dynamics and protein structure network modeling are combined to dissect molecular mechanisms of Hsp90 regulation by the client recruiter cochaperones. Dynamic signatures of the Hsp90-cochaperone complexes are manifested in differential modulation of the conformational mobility in the Hsp90 lid motif. Consistent with the experiments, …

Quantum Non-Barking Dogs, Sara Imari Walker, Paul C. W. Davies, Prasant Samantray, Yakir Aharonov

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Quantum weak measurements with states both pre- and post-selected offer a window into a hitherto neglected sector of quantum mechanics. A class of such systems involves time dependent evolution with transitions possible. In this paper we explore two very simple systems in this class. The first is a toy model representing the decay of an excited atom. The second is the tunneling of a particle through a barrier. The post-selection criteria are chosen as follows: at the final time, the atom remains in its initial excited state for the first example and the particle remains behind the barrier for the …

Assessing Optimal Set Of Implemental Physical Parameterization Schemes In A Multi-Physics Land Surface Model Using Genetic Algorithm, S. Hong, X. Yu, S. K. Park, Y.-S. Choi, Boksoon Myoung Jan 2014

Assessing Optimal Set Of Implemental Physical Parameterization Schemes In A Multi-Physics Land Surface Model Using Genetic Algorithm, S. Hong, X. Yu, S. K. Park, Y.-S. Choi, Boksoon Myoung

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Optimization of land surface models has been challenging due to the model complexity and uncertainty. In this study, we performed scheme-based model optimizations by designing a framework for coupling "the micro-genetic algorithm" (micro-GA) and "the Noah land surface model with multiple physics options" (Noah-MP). Micro-GA controls the scheme selections among eight different land surface parameterization categories, each containing 2–4 schemes, in Noah-MP in order to extract the optimal scheme combination that achieves the best skill score. This coupling framework was successfully applied to the optimizations of evapotranspiration and runoff simulations in terms of surface water balance over the Han River …

Interpolation By Polynomials With Symmetries, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz Jan 2014

Interpolation By Polynomials With Symmetries, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We here specialize the standard matrix-valued polynomial interpolation to the case where on the imaginary axis the interpolating polynomials admit various symmetries: Positive semidefinite, Skew-Hermitian, J- Hermitian, Hamiltonian and others.

The procedure is comprized of three stages, illustrated through the case where on $i\R$ the interpolating polynomials are to be positive semidefinite. We first, on the expense of doubling the degree, obtain a minimal degree interpolating polynomial P(s) which on $i\R$ is Hermitian. Then we find all polynomials Ψ(s), vanishing at the interpolation points which are positive semidefinite on $i\R$. Finally, using the fact that the set of positive semidefinite …

Predictability And Nonobviousness In Patent Law After Ksr, Christopher A. Cotropia Jan 2014

Predictability And Nonobviousness In Patent Law After Ksr, Christopher A. Cotropia

Law Faculty Publications

In KSR International Co. v. Teleflex, Inc., the Supreme Court addressed the doctrine of nonobviousness, the ultimate question of patentability, for the first time in thirty years. In mandating a flexible approach to deciding nonobviousness, the KSR opinion introduced two predictability standards for determining nonobviousness. The Court described predictability of use (hereinafter termed "Type I predictability" )-whether the inventor used the prior art in a predictable manner to create the invention-and predictability of the result (hereinafter termed "Type II predictability")-whether the invention produced a predictable result-both as a means for proving obviousness. Although Type I predictability is easily explained as …

Coke Deposition On Wox/Sio2 Catalyst Physically Mixed With Magnesium Oxide For Metathesis Reaction Of Ethylene And 2-Butene, Thidaya Thitiapichart Jan 2014

Coke Deposition On Wox/Sio2 Catalyst Physically Mixed With Magnesium Oxide For Metathesis Reaction Of Ethylene And 2-Butene, Thidaya Thitiapichart

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The presence of MgO physically mixed with silica supported tungsten oxide catalysts was investigated in metathesis reaction using ethylene and trans-2-butene as feeds. Adding MgO could enhance the conversion of trans-2-butene and propylene yield, comparing with a catalyst mixed with SiO2 as a referenced one. However, the presence of MgO with silica supported tungsten oxide catalysts surprisingly elevated the coke deposition. The coke precursor was formed by MgO from isomerization of undesired products like C5+ and moved to deposit on the acid sites of silica supported tungsten oxide catalysts which is a coke site of the catalysts. Furthermore, the distance …

Modification Of W/Sio₂ Catalysts By Second Metal For Metathesis Of Ethylene And 2-Butene, Narongrat Poovarawan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In this thesis, the main goals were to study the effect of the dispersion of the tungsten active phase and the modification of WO3/SiO2 catalyst by a second metal for metathesis reaction of the mixture of cis/trans-2-butene and ethylene. The silica supported tungsten catalyst was used as the base catalyst and lanthanum, cerium, yttrium were used as the second metal in this study. It was found that the dispersion of the tungsten active phase would affect the catalytic performance of the WO3/SiO2 catalyst, when the mixture of cis/tran-2-butene was use as feed. The second metal was used to midify the dispersion …

Overhead High-Voltage Transmission-Line Current Monitoring By Magnetoresistive Sensors And Current Source Reconstruction At Transmission Tower, X. Sun, Q. Huang, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang, P. W.T. Pong Jan 2014

Overhead High-Voltage Transmission-Line Current Monitoring By Magnetoresistive Sensors And Current Source Reconstruction At Transmission Tower, X. Sun, Q. Huang, L. (Lijun) J. Jiang, P. W.T. Pong

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a novel current monitoring technology based on magnetic field sensing at a transmission tower for overhead high-voltage transmission lines (HVTLs), which can accurately measure phase current parameters in real time. This technology is based on the phenomenon that the magnetic field distribution at the top level of a transmission tower can reflect the operation states of the transmission lines including current amplitude and phase angle imbalances. A current source reconstruction method based on stochastic optimization strategy was developed to reconstruct the electrical parameters from the magnetic field emanated by the overhead transmission lines. This concept of current …
