The Taxonomy Of Brain Cancer Stem Cells: What's In A Name?, David H. Gutmann

Open Access Publications

With the increasing recognition that stem cells play vital roles in the formation, maintenance, and potential targeted treatment of brain tumors, there has been an exponential increase in basic laboratory and translational research on these cell types. However, there are several different classes of stem cells germane to brain cancer, each with distinct capabilities and functions. In this perspective, we discuss the types of stem cells relevant to brain tumor pathogenesis, and suggest a nomenclature for future preclinical and clinical investigation.

A Process Model For Eliciting Requirements Of Socio-Technical Systems, Surendra Sarnikar, Omar F. El-Gayar, Abdullah Hamdi Saleh Wahbeh Jan 2014

A Process Model For Eliciting Requirements Of Socio-Technical Systems, Surendra Sarnikar, Omar F. El-Gayar, Abdullah Hamdi Saleh Wahbeh

Research & Publications

Designing Socio-Technical (ST) systems requires the designer to account for the intrinsic and interrelated characteristics of the tasks, actors, technologies, and environment. Requirements analysis informs the design of information systems. However, few approaches have emerged to analyze requirements for ST systems, which is considered complex, time consuming, and requires a large body of knowledge. In this paper we present a process model that aims to help identifying ST systems requirements. The process model assumes that ST systems characteristics of tasks, actors, technologies, and environment can help identifying a set of ST imbalances that in turn helps in the identification process …

Opportunities For Business Intelligence And Big Data Analytics In Evidence Based Medicine, Omar F. El-Gayar, Prem Timsina, Surendra Sarnikar

Research & Publications

Evidence based medicine (EBM) is the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. Each year, a significant number of research studies (potentially serving as evidence) are reported in the literature at an ever-increasing rate outpacing the translation of research findings into practice. Coupled with the proliferation of electronic health records, and consumer health information, researchers and practitioners are challenged to leverage the full potential of EBM. In this paper we present a research agenda for leveraging business intelligence and big data analytics in evidence based medicine, and illustrate how …

Leveraging Advanced Analytics To Generate Dynamic Medical Systematic Reviews, Prem Timsina, Omar F. El-Gayar, Nevine Nawar

Research & Publications

According to Khan et al, “a review earns the adjective systematic if it is based on a clearly formulated question, identifies relevant studies, appraises their quality and summarizes the evidence by use of explicit methodology”. Conducting systematic reviews tend to be resource intensive and may suffer from problems such as publication bias, time-lag bias, duplicate bias, citation bias, and outcome reporting bias. This research aims to develop a system to facilitate the creation of systematic reviews. Starting with a clinical question, the proposed system will query ClinicalTrial.gov to search published RCTs. The system will exploit advanced data analytics techniques to …

Meaningful Use Of Electronic Health Records For Physician Collaboration: A Patient Centered Health Care Perspective, Cherie Noteboom, Sergey Motorny, Sajda Qureshi, Surendra Sarnikar

Research & Publications

EHRs (Electronic Health Records), can contribute greatly to improving care and managing the rising costs of healthcare. The use and the integration of EHRs (Electronic Health Records) in supporting collaboration to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare remains a challenge. It appears that the physicians are at the center of this bottleneck. As healthcare is provided by interdisciplinary teams of clinicians and collaboration and coordination are key to success. Literature suggests reasons for the limited use relate to policy, financial and usability considerations, but it does not provide an understanding of reasons for physicians' limited interaction and adaptation of …

An Ontology-Based Information Extraction (Obie) Framework For Analyzing Initial Public Offering (Ipo) Prospectus, Jie Tao, Amit Deokar, Omar F. El-Gayar

Research & Publications

With the large amounts of information associated with the Initial Public Offering (IPO) process, an intelligent tool is needed for assisting the decision-making activities for both the investors and the underwriters. Even though a large body of related studies exists in extant literature, minimum attention has been devoted to the aspect of understanding hidden semantics within the informative contents of IPO prospectus. In this paper, we present a framework for processing the textual content of IPO prospectus based on an emerging technique named Ontology Based Information Extraction (OBIE). Preliminary results indicates that the framework is capable of meeting the design …

Biology Faculty Research

In their 2012 report, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology advocated "replacing standard science laboratory courses with discovery-based research courses"-a challenging proposition that presents practical and pedagogical difficulties. In this paper, we describe our collective experiences working with the Genomics Education Partnership, a nationwide faculty consortium that aims to provide undergraduates with a research experience in genomics through a scheduled course (a classroom-based undergraduate research experience, or CURE). We examine the common barriers encountered in implementing a CURE, program elements of most value to faculty, ways in which a shared core support system can help, and the …

Biomechanical Analysis Of Concealed Pack Load Influences On Terrorist Gait Signatures Derived From Gröbner Basis Theory, Sean S. Kohles, Anum Barki, Kimberly D. Kendricks, Ronald F. Tuttle

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This project examines kinematic gait parameters as forensic predictors of the influence associated with individuals carrying concealed weighted packs up to 20% of their body weight. An initial inverse dynamics approach combined with computational algebra provided lower limb joint angles during the stance phase of gait as measured from 12 human subjects during normal walking. The following paper describes the additional biomechanical analysis of the joint angle data to produce kinetic and kinematic parameters further characterizing human motion. Results include the rotational velocities and accelerations of the hip, knee, and ankle as well as inertial moments and kinetic energies produced …

Predictors Of Hiv Testing Among Individuals Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder, Marie Denise Decoline Jan 2014

Predictors Of Hiv Testing Among Individuals Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder, Marie Denise Decoline

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research on rates of HIV testing among individuals diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BPD) is limited, while HIV infection continues to rise among BPD individuals. The problem is that BPD individuals are at high risk for HIV infection due to non-adherence to treatment for bipolar disorder and manic episodes that can lead to high-risk behaviors. The goal of the study was to examine the association between selected demographic variables, having a bipolar diagnosis, engaging in high-risk behaviors, inability to afford treatment for bipolar disorder, non-adherence to treatment for bipolar disorder, and substance abuse, and their relationship to obtaining an HIV test …
