OEWRI Technical Reports

The Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District has implemented a Section 319 Grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency Region VII designed to reduce nonpoint source pollution in the Asher Creek Watershed in northern Greene and southern Polk Counties. In 1998, the Little Sac River was placed on the 303d list for bacterial contamination, for which a TMDL for Total Coliform was approved in 2006 (Baffaut 2006). Various studies have indicated Asher Creek has the highest level of E. Coli bacteria in the entire Little Sac River Watershed and the Upper Little Sac …

From Arrows To Bullets: Sustainable Hunting, Fishing, And Trapping, George S. Apostolopoulos May 2014

From Arrows To Bullets: Sustainable Hunting, Fishing, And Trapping, George S. Apostolopoulos

2014 Student Theses

My thesis paper is on hunting, fishing, and trapping in the state of New York. In this thesis I will go over months of my own personal research and experience on the topic. I will provide information on wildlife populations and biodiversity, as I have recorded it over the last two years.

When discussing the topics of hunting, fishing, and trapping in New York State the focus of conversation is often on the moral wrongness and negative impacts on wildlife that these disciplines have. However, those who oppose hunting, fishing, and trapping not only overlook their environmental educational value, environmental …

Water Water Everywhere: Analyzing Long Island's Water Issues And Finding Solutions For A Sustainable Future, Anthony T. Becker May 2014

Water Water Everywhere: Analyzing Long Island's Water Issues And Finding Solutions For A Sustainable Future, Anthony T. Becker

2014 Student Theses

Over three million people call Long Island their home. With access to beautiful landscapes, world-renowned beaches, and proximity to New York City, it is no wonder that so many proudly call this geographic stretch of glacial till their home. However, throughout the years our actions do not necessarily reflect this affection we have to our home. Years of sprawl and human infestation across the island have resulted in widespread environmental degradation. Specifically, the water we drink and the beaches we enjoy have become endangered. I plan on studying the urban ecology of how intensified population growth led to the eutrophication …

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2014, Dave Olson May 2014

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2014, Dave Olson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Observers counted 5,368 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during February 2014, which was a 16% decrease from the 6,425 counted during winter 2013. However, the long term trend from counts for total swans of the RMP suggested an increase (P<0.05) of 5.4% per year during 1972 – 2013. In the tri-state area, the number of total swans decreased for Montana (-17%), Idaho (-19%) and Wyoming (-10%) from counts in 2013. Weather may have contributed to the decrease in numbers. Weekly snow storms came through the area for the entire month of February making coordinated aerial surveys difficult. Despite the decrease in total swans from 2013, the long term trend from counts for total swans for Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming is increasing. The number of birds wintering in areas near restoration flocks increased by 38% from last winter. The numbers of birds at Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) (32) decreased by 14% while the birds at Summer Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) (141) increased 66% from 2013. There was no survey at Malheur NWR in Oregon for this year. Reservoir levels in early February were lower than during winter 2013 and 35% below the long term average. Temperatures in the tri-state area and in Yellowstone National Park during winter 2013-14 were below the long term average.

Structure Of A Mitochondrial Cytochrome C Conformer Competent For Peroxidase Activity, Levi J. Mcclelland, Tung-Chung Mou, Margaret E. Jeakins-Cooley, Stephen R. Sprang, Bruce E. Bowler

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

At the onset of apoptosis, the peroxidation of cardiolipin at the inner mitochondrial membrane by cytochrome c requires an open coordination site on the heme. We report a 1.45-Å resolution structure of yeast iso-1-cytochrome c with the Met80 heme ligand swung out of the heme crevice and replaced by a water molecule. This conformational change requires modest adjustments to the main chain of the heme crevice loop and is facilitated by a trimethyllysine 72-to-alanine mutation. This mutation also enhances the peroxidase activity of iso-1-cytochrome c. The structure shows a buried water channel capable of facilitating peroxide access to the active …

Ferns are well known for their shade-dwelling habits. Their ability to thrive under low-light conditions has been linked to the evolution of a novel chimeric photoreceptor-neochrome-that fuses red-sensing phytochrome and blue-sensing phototropin modules into a single gene, thereby optimizing phototropic responses. Despite being implicated in facilitating the diversification of modern ferns, the origin of neochrome has remained a mystery. We present evidence for neochrome in hornworts (a bryophyte lineage) and demonstrate that ferns acquired neochrome from hornworts via horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Fern neochromes are nested within hornwort neochromes in our large-scale phylogenetic reconstructions of phototropin and phytochrome gene families. …

Inhibiting Heat Shock Factor 1 In Human Cancer Cells With A Potent Rna Aptamer, Hua Shi, H. Hans Salamanca, Marc A. Antonyak, Richard A. Cerione, John T. Lis May 2014

Inhibiting Heat Shock Factor 1 In Human Cancer Cells With A Potent Rna Aptamer, Hua Shi, H. Hans Salamanca, Marc A. Antonyak, Richard A. Cerione, John T. Lis

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) is a master regulator that coordinates chaperone protein expression to enhance cellular survival in the face of heat stress. In cancer cells, HSF1 drives a transcriptional program distinct from heat shock to promote metastasis and cell survival. Its strong association with the malignant phenotype implies that HSF1 antagonists may have general and effective utilities in cancer therapy. For this purpose, we had identified an avid RNA aptamer for HSF1 that is portable among different model organisms. Extending our previous work in yeast and Drosophila, here we report the activity of this aptamer in human cancer …

Xiap-Targeted Prostate Cancer Therapy, Subhra Mohapatra, W. Jack Pledger

USF Patents

A treatment for prostate cancer using cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors is provided. The effects of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors on the survival of prostate cancer cells was examined. Roscovitine, R-roscovitine, and CGP74514A were shown to induce the apoptosis of LNCaP and LNCaP-Rf cells, both of which express wild-type p53. The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors of the present invention induce the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis of prostate cancer cells by a dual mechanism: p53 accumulation and XIAP depletion.

Gene Expression Profile Reveals The Novel Repression Of Heat Shock Protein Expression By Tnip1 In Keratinocytes, Vincent P. Ramirez May 2014

Gene Expression Profile Reveals The Novel Repression Of Heat Shock Protein Expression By Tnip1 In Keratinocytes, Vincent P. Ramirez

Doctoral Dissertations

The TNFα-induced protein 3-interacting protein 1 (TNIP1) protein, a repressor of transcription factor activation or activity, has been linked to chronic inflammatory diseases, including psoriasis. However, TNIP1’s exact role is not yet been determined. To examine the genes and biological functions regulated by TNIP1, we overexpressed TNIP1 in cultured keratinocytes and performed a gene expression microarray analysis. Reduced expression of most genes was observed, including several heat shock proteins (HSP). However, its exact role in this process and the mechanism of the TNIP1-mediated transcriptional repression is not yet characterized.

We examined the TNIP1 repression of HSPA6 (also named HSP70B’) to …

Artificial Dissemination, Brian Fleetwood May 2014

Artificial Dissemination, Brian Fleetwood

Theses and Dissertations

This writing is an experiment in combining the two most important frameworks through which I understand the world, the storytelling traditions of my people, the Mvskoke(Creek), and the rational tradition that began with European Enlightenment era thinking. By weaving allegorical narrative (much of it personal) into theoretical speculation, I draw connections between recollection, truth, and the act of making. This examination of the gaps and connections between seemingly disparate worldviews, runs in parallel to the purpose of my work, wherein I construct fictive symbiotic and parasitic relationships between jewelry and wearer. This work takes advantage of the wearer as environment, …

Signal-To-Noise Measurements And Particle Focusing In Liquid-Core Waveguides, Michael A. Olson May 2014

Signal-To-Noise Measurements And Particle Focusing In Liquid-Core Waveguides, Michael A. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio in liquid core anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs) and the application of hydrodynamic focusing to the waveguides. These concepts are presented as a method to improve the detection capabilities of the ARROW platform. The improvements are specifically targeted at achieving single molecule detection (SMD) with the devices. To analyze the SNR of the waveguides a test platform was designed and fabricated. This test platform was then used to examine relationship between the SNR and the location of the excitation region. It was determined that the excitation region should be moved closer …

Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke May 2014

Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke

Theses and Dissertations

The human subject is profoundly interdependent, in relation to other people and to the surrounding environment, both “natural” and technological. Western dualistic thinking creates bounded and oppositional categories and generates a conception of human subjects as autonomous, self-sufficient beings that are transparent to themselves and in control of self, other, and world. This contributes to the ongoing inequalities in society and supports normative hegemony. This dissertation argues that it is imperative to insist on the intersubjective, permeable, and contingent qualities of existence. While this project is preceded by a great deal of theoretical criticism of Western metaphysical dualism, we must …

Transcriptome Analysis Of Sea Lamprey Embryogenesis, Zakary Ilya Yermolenko May 2014

Transcriptome Analysis Of Sea Lamprey Embryogenesis, Zakary Ilya Yermolenko

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) has survived throughout evolution for hundreds of millions of years. It is considered an invasive species to the Great Lakes that has caused dramatic changes in the ecosystem for fish communities resulting in the collapse of a fishing industry that was previously valued at billions of dollars. Successful management of the sea lamprey is essential to a sustainable fishing industry and biodiversity. Therefore sea lamprey embryos were studied at various stages of development by growing them in a simulated habitat. RNAs from adult female ovaries and embryos at different time points during embryogenesis …
