Abstract

The detailed mechanisms associated with the influence of scattering and absorption properties on the fluorescence intensity sampled by a single optical fiber have recently been elucidated based on Monte Carlo simulated data. Here we develop an experimental single fiber fluorescence (SFF) spectroscopy setup and validate the Monte Carlo data and semi-empirical model equation that describes the SFF signal as a function of scattering. We present a calibration procedure that corrects the SFF signal for all system-related, wavelength dependent transmission efficiencies to yield an absolute value of intrinsic fluorescence. The validity of the Monte Carlo data and semi-empirical model is …

Constructive Vs. Destructive Anger: A Model And Three Pathways For The Expression Of Anger, Kierea Chanelle Meloy May 2014

Constructive Vs. Destructive Anger: A Model And Three Pathways For The Expression Of Anger, Kierea Chanelle Meloy

Theses and Dissertations

Anger is a significant human emotion, the management of which has far reaching implications for individual and relationship well-being. Yet there is a deficit in the clinical literature regarding the best ways to conceptualize and respond to anger (Saini, 2009). We offer a model of anger which therapists can use to help discriminate healing from harmful manifestations of anger, and which therapists can use in developing interventions for reshaping destructive anger toward constructive anger. We are specifically addressing anger in response to offense, or transactional anger which arises at points of friction in the interface between two people in a …

Rational Strategy For Shaped Nanomaterial Synthesis In Reverse Micelle Reactors, Zengyan Wei, Hiroshi Matsui May 2014

Rational Strategy For Shaped Nanomaterial Synthesis In Reverse Micelle Reactors, Zengyan Wei, Hiroshi Matsui

Publications and Research

The shape-controlled synthesis of nanoparticles was established in single-phase solutions by controlling growth directions of crystalline facets on seed nanocrystals kinetically; however, it was difficult to rationally predict and design nanoparticle shapes. Here we introduce a methodology to fabricate nanoparticles in smaller sizes by evolving shapes thermodynamically. This strategy enables a more rational approach to fabricate shaped nanoparticles by etching specific positions of atoms on facets of seed nanocrystals in reverse micelle reactors where the surface energy gradient induces desorption of atoms on specific locations on the seed surfaces. From seeds of 12 nm palladium nanocubes, the shape is evolved …

Vanishing Configurations In Network Dynamics With Asynchronous Updates, Ian H. Dinwoodie May 2014

Vanishing Configurations In Network Dynamics With Asynchronous Updates, Ian H. Dinwoodie

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We consider Boolean dynamics for biological networks where stochasticity is introduced through asynchronous updates. An exact method is given for finding states which can reach a steady state with positive probability, and a method is given for finding states which cannot reach other steady states. These methods are based on computational commutative algebra. The algorithms are applied to dynamics of a cell survival network to determine node assignments that exclude termination in a cancerous state

Energy-Efficient Stdp-Based Learning Circuits With Memristor Synapses, Xinyu Wu, Vishal Saxena, Kristy A. Campbell May 2014

Energy-Efficient Stdp-Based Learning Circuits With Memristor Synapses, Xinyu Wu, Vishal Saxena, Kristy A. Campbell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is now accepted that the traditional von Neumann architecture, with processor and memory separation, is ill suited to process parallel data streams which a mammalian brain can efficiently handle. Moreover, researchers now envision computing architectures which enable cognitive processing of massive amounts of data by identifying spatio-temporal relationships in real-time and solving complex pattern recognition problems. Memristor cross-point arrays, integrated with standard CMOS technology, are expected to result in massively parallel and low-power Neuromorphic computing architectures. Recently, significant progress has been made in spiking neural networks (SNN) which emulate data processing in the cortical brain. These architectures comprise of …

Eagles, Indian Tribes, And The Free Exercise Of Religion, Kathryn E. Kovacs May 2014

Eagles, Indian Tribes, And The Free Exercise Of Religion, Kathryn E. Kovacs

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act prohibits the taking or possession of eagles and eagle parts. Recognizing the centrality of eagles in many Native American religions, Congress carved out an exception to that prohibition for “the religious purposes of Indian tribes.” The problems with the administration of that exception are reaching crisis proportions. At the Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Eagle Repository, which collects dead eagles from around the country and distributes them to members of federally recognized Indian tribes, more than six thousand tribal members are on a waiting list for eagles. That list grows each year. Frustration …

Fluid Flow-Induced Mesenchymal Stem Cell Migration: Role Of Fak And Rock Mechanosensors, Brandon D. Riehl May 2014

Fluid Flow-Induced Mesenchymal Stem Cell Migration: Role Of Fak And Rock Mechanosensors, Brandon D. Riehl

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The study of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) migration under mechanical stimulation conditions with investigation of the underlying molecular mechanism could lead to a better understanding and outcomes in stem cell-based regenerative medicine. MSCs having multipotent regenerative capability exist in niches in the bone marrow, muscle, vasculature, and in other tissues throughout the body, and their migration through tissues and vasculature for the repair of damaged tissue is a key process of cell and tissue homeostasis, remodeling, and regeneration. While cell migration in response to cytokines and other chemo-attractants is relatively well understood, little is revealed in regard to the effect …

Numap: A Web Platform For Prediction Of Nucleosome Rotational And Translational Positioning At High Resolution, Bader Alharbi May 2014

Numap: A Web Platform For Prediction Of Nucleosome Rotational And Translational Positioning At High Resolution, Bader Alharbi

Theses

Nucleosome positioning is critical for gene expression and of major biological interest. The high cost of experimental mapping of nucleosomal arrangements signifies the need for computational approaches to predict nucleosome positioning at high resolution. Here, we present a web-based application to fulfill this need by implementing two models, W/S and YR schemes, for the rotational and translational positioning of nucleosomes respectively. Our methods are based on sequence-dependent anisotropic bending that dictates how DNA is wrapped around a histone octamer. This application allows users to specify a number of options such as schemes and parameters for threading calculation providemultiple layout options …

Temperature Dependent Transcription Initiation In Archaea: Interplay Between Transcription Factor B And Promoter Sequence, Ming-Hsiao Wu May 2014

Temperature Dependent Transcription Initiation In Archaea: Interplay Between Transcription Factor B And Promoter Sequence, Ming-Hsiao Wu

Dissertations and Theses

In Pyrococcus furiosus (Pfu), a hyperthermophile archaeon, two transcription factor Bs, TFB1 and TFB2 are encoded in the genomic DNA. TFB1 is the primary TFB in Pfu, and is homologous to transcription factor IIB (TFIIB) in eukaryotes. TFB2 is proposed to be a secondary TFB that is compared to TFB1, TFB2 lacks the conserved B-finger / B-reader / B-linker regions which assist RNA polymerase in transcription start site selection and promoter opening functions respectively. P. furiosus, like all Archaea, encodes a single transcription factor E (TFE), that is homologous to the N-terminus of transcription factor II …

Living In Limb/O: Reading Dismemberment And Orphanhood In Contemporary Spanish Caribbean Literature, Sara Jill Gusky

Open Access Dissertations

Seeking alternative metaphors for understanding the Caribbean experience as it is illustrated in contemporary Spanish Caribbean novels, this dissertation explores broken bodyscapes in order to approach the organizing metaphor of dismemberment. I establish a metaphorical connection between the body with missing limbs and the family tree with missing limbs in order to map the space of limb/o in which both allegorical and literal orphans are depicted in the following novels: La casa de la laguna (1997) by Rosario Ferré, Nuestra señora de la noche (2006) and Sirena Selena vestida de pena (2000) by Mayra Santos-Febres, El reino de este mundo …

Urinary Estrogen Metabolites And Self-Reported Infertility In Women Infected With Schistosoma Haematobium, Julio Santos, Maria Joao Gouveia, Nuno Vale, Maria De Lurdes Delgado, Ana Goncalves, Gabriel Rinaldi, Paul J. Brindley, +10 Additional Authors

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease, endemic in 76 countries, that afflicts more than 240 million people. The impact of schistosomiasis on infertility may be underestimated according to recent literature. Extracts of Schistosoma haematobium include estrogen-like metabolites termed catechol-estrogens that down regulate estrogen receptors alpha and beta in estrogen responsive cells. In addition, schistosome derived catechol-estrogens induce genotoxicity that result in estrogen-DNA adducts. These catechol estrogens and the catechol-estrogen-DNA adducts can be isolated from sera of people infected with S. haematobium. The aim of this study was to study infertility in females infected with S. haematobium and its …

Increased Productivity Of A Cover Crop Mixture Is Not Associated With Enhanced Agroecosystem Services, Richard G. Smith, Lesley W. Atwood, Nicholas D. Warren

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Cover crops provide a variety of important agroecological services within cropping systems. Typically these crops are grown as monocultures or simple graminoid-legume bicultures; however, ecological theory and empirical evidence suggest that agroecosystem services could be enhanced by growing cover crops in species-rich mixtures. We examined cover crop productivity, weed suppression, stability, and carryover effects to a subsequent cash crop in an experiment involving a five-species annual cover crop mixture and the component species grown as monocultures in SE New Hampshire, USA in 2011 and 2012. The mean land equivalent ratio (LER) for the mixture exceeded 1.0 in both years, indicating …

Toward A Dynamical Theory Of Body Movement In Musical Performance, Roger Chaffin, Alexander P. Demos May 2014

Toward A Dynamical Theory Of Body Movement In Musical Performance, Roger Chaffin, Alexander P. Demos

Open Access Author Fund Awardees' Articles

Musicians sway expressively as they play in ways that seem clearly related to the music, but quantifying the relationship has been difficult. We suggest that a complex systems framework and its accompanying tools for analyzing non-linear dynamical systems can help identify the motor synergies involved. Synergies are temporary assemblies of parts that come together to accomplish specific goals. We assume that the goal of the performer is to convey musical structure and expression to the audience and to other performers. We provide examples of how dynamical systems tools, such as recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), can be used to examine performers' …

Alpine lakes receive a large fraction of their nutrients from atmospheric sources and are consequently sensitive to variations in both the amount and chemistry of atmospheric deposition. In this study we explored the spatial changes in lake water chemistry and biology along a gradient of dust deposition in the Wind River Range, Wyoming. Regional differences were explored using the variation in bulk deposition, lake water, sediment, and bedrock geochemistry and catchment characteristics. Dust deposition rates in the Southwestern region averaged 3.34 g m−2 year−1, approximately three times higher than deposition rates in the Northwestern region (average 1.06 g m−2 year−1). …

Amplification Of Angular Rotations Using Weak Measurements, Omar S. Magaña-Loaiza, Mohammad Mirhosseini, Brandon Rodenburg, Robert W. Boyd

Faculty Publications

We present a weak measurement protocol that permits a sensitive estimation of angular rotations based on the concept of weak-value amplification. The shift in the state of a pointer, in both angular position and the conjugate orbital angular momentum bases, is used to estimate angular rotations. This is done by an amplification of both the real and imaginary parts of the weak-value of a polarization operator that has been coupled to the pointer, which is a spatial mode, via a spin-orbit coupling. Our experiment demonstrates the first realization of weak-value amplification in the azimuthal degree of freedom. We have achieved …

Using Least Variance For Robust Extraction Of Systolic Time Intervals, Cody R. Cziesler May 2014

Using Least Variance For Robust Extraction Of Systolic Time Intervals, Cody R. Cziesler

Theses

Systolic time intervals (STI) are clinically used as non-invasive predictor of cardiovascular disease. However, algorithm accuracy generally suffers across subjects and physiological states, requiring parameter tuning for robust STI extraction. To address this challenge, an automated methodology of processing with varying tuning parameters was explored. In this work, two STIs were examined: the R-wave pulse transit time to the PPG foot at the ear (rPTT) and the left ventricular ejection time (LVET).

Historic feature detection algorithms were used with a range of tuning parameters over a 60 second interval, with least variance used to select the optimal parameter for robust …
