The Contributions Of Leo Cardinal Scheffczyk To Mariology After Vatican Ii, Emery De Gaál
The Contributions Of Leo Cardinal Scheffczyk To Mariology After Vatican Ii, Emery De Gaál
Marian Studies
The shortest way to introduce Leo Scheffczyk (1920–2005) to an American theological audience is probably to state that he is “the European Avery Dulles.” Such a generalization is incorrect and yet contains a kernel of truth. At the same consistory in 2001, both master theologians were created cardinals by St. John Paul II. It is also most indicative of their contributions to theology that this date coincided with the 200th birthday of Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801–90), who informed their thinking in central ways. Incidentally, this was also Scheffczyk’s eighty-first birthday. In addition, both were prolific writers. Scheffczyk’s motto …
Anthropological Aspects Of Marian Devotion For The Formation Of The 'Feminine Genius', Danielle Peters
Anthropological Aspects Of Marian Devotion For The Formation Of The 'Feminine Genius', Danielle Peters
Marian Studies
It is commonly accepted that devotio, as an act of virtue of religion and distinguished from devotional practices, implies a stable interior disposition and readiness to serve God joyfully and generously. Accordingly, authentic Marian devotion equips heart, mind and will to be receptive for a deeper understanding and fulfillment of God’s ways in imitation and through the intercession of Our Lady. Marialis Cultus, 34, denotes that “Devotion to the Blessed Virgin must also pay close attention to certain findings of the human sciences.”
Forty years after Marialis Cultus (MC) and twenty-five years after St. John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter Mulieris …

Structural Similarity Between Β3-Peptides Synthesized From Β3-Homo-Amino Acids Or L-Aspartic Acid Monomers, Sahar Ahmed, Tara Sprules, Kamaljit Kaur
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Formation of stable secondary structures by oligomers that mimic natural peptides is a key asset for enhanced biological response. Here we show that oligomeric β3‐hexapeptides synthesized from l‐aspartic acid monomers (β3‐peptides 1, 5a, and 6) or homologated β3‐amino acids (β3‐peptide 2), fold into similar stable 14‐helical secondary structures in solution, except that the former form right‐handed 14‐helix and the later form left‐handed 14‐helix. β3‐Peptides from l‐Asp monomers contain an additional amide bond in the side chains that provides opportunities for more hydrogen bonding. However, based on the …

Wendy Harmon grew up with the mountains, rivers, lakes, and streams of western North Carolina at her back door. Born and raised in Rutherfordton, N.C., some of her fondest memories are of outdoor exploratory excursions with her parents, Tommy and Darlene Harmon, where she literally first got her feet wet in ecology—the study of how organisms interact with their environments. When Harmon began looking at colleges, she wanted to find a place where she could further develop her love for science, biology, and ecology.
Identification Of Potential Fish Hosts From Wild Populations Of State-Threatened East Texas Freshwater Mussels Using A Molecular Identification Dataset, Nathaniel T. Marshall
Identification Of Potential Fish Hosts From Wild Populations Of State-Threatened East Texas Freshwater Mussels Using A Molecular Identification Dataset, Nathaniel T. Marshall
Biology Theses
Six species of freshwater mussel are of conservation concern throughout their range in East Texas, (Texas pigtoe (Fusconaia askewi), triangle pigtoe (Fusconaia lananensis), southern hickorynut (Obovaria jacksoniana), sandbank pocketbook (Lampsilis satura), Louisiana pigtoe (Pleurobema riddellii), and Texas heelsplitter (Potamilus amphichaenus)). These species warranted listing in Texas due, in part, to their restricted distributions and low abundances. These mussels, like most unionids, exhibit an unusual life cycle, unique to Unionidae, in which their larvae, called glochidia, are obligate ectoparasites on fish. Knowledge of host fish species is severally lacking for many mussels, as many hosts are unknown or have not been …

Midrange Magnetically-Coupled Resonant Circuit Wireless Power Transfer, Varun Nagoorkar
Electrical Engineering Theses
Recent years have seen numerous efforts to make wireless power transfer (WPT) feasible for application in diverse fields, from low-power domestic applications and medical applications to high-power industrial applications and electrical vehicles (EVs). As a result, it has been found that WPT by means of non-radiative magnetically-coupled resonant circuits is an optimum method for mid-range applications where the separation of source and receiver is in the range of 1-2m.This thesis investigates various aspects of the design of magnetically-coupled resonant circuits for non-radiative WPT. Firstly, a basic four-coil network for a mid-range (1-2m gap) WPT system with a single power source …

High Ionic Strength Narrows The Population Of Sites Participating In Protein Ion-Exchange Adsorption: A Single-Molecule Study, Lydia Kisley
High Ionic Strength Narrows The Population Of Sites Participating In Protein Ion-Exchange Adsorption: A Single-Molecule Study, Lydia Kisley
Faculty Scholarship
The retention and elution of proteins in ion-exchange chromatography is routinely controlled by adjusting the mobile phase salt concentration. It has repeatedly been observed, as judged from adsorption isotherms, that the apparent heterogeneity of adsorption is lower at more-eluting, higher ionic strength. Here, we present an investigation into the mechanism of this phenomenon using a single-molecule, super-resolution imaging technique called motion-blur Points Accumulation for Imaging in Nanoscale Topography (mbPAINT). We observed that the number of functional adsorption sites was smaller at high ionic strength and that these sites had reduced desorption kinetic heterogeneity, and thus narrower predicted elution profiles, for …
Bedbugs Biting Back? A Multifactorial Consideration Of Bedbug Resurgence, Vanessa L. Abejuela-Matt
Bedbugs Biting Back? A Multifactorial Consideration Of Bedbug Resurgence, Vanessa L. Abejuela-Matt
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Bedbugs, previously thought to be eradicated during the mid-20th century, have reemerged in the new millennium with unforeseen furor. Affected patients and families frequently present in primary care settings, not only with complaints of pruritus or rash, but with anxiety and shame regarding the condition. Changes in eradication techniques and resistance, as well as lack of reporting – from both patients and lodging institutions – have hindered control. The increased mobility of goods and the human population has provided further avenues for bedbug spread. While current literature thoroughly describes the clinical presentation of bedbugs and the increasingly problematic effects on …

The Influence Of Breeding Experience On Nest Success In Red-Winged Blackbird, George M. Linz, Richard S. Sawin, Mark W. Lutman
Western North American Naturalist
The Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) is a polygynous species, and females are typically responsible for the majority of parental care. Despite their limited involvement, males can contribute to reproduction through nest defense and the feeding of nestlings. Some aspects of nest defense may be learned, and older males are more likely to feed young, suggesting that males with previous breeding experience may enjoy higher nest success than their naïve counterparts. We manipulated territory ownership on 10 wetlands in central North Dakota in order to examine the influence of breeding experience on reproductive success. We found no evidence that …

Cave-Dwelling Arthropods And Vertebrates Of North Rim Grand Canyon, With Notes On Ecology And Management, J. Judson Wynne, Kyle D. Voyles
Western North American Naturalist
Prior to this study, there was no information on arthropods, bats, and other vertebrates of caves in northwesternmost Arizona. Based on invertebrate and vertebrate inventory work conducted during 2005 and 2006, we provide future directions for conservation and management for caves on Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument, northwestern Arizona. Baseline investigations to find and identify arthropods, bats, and other vertebrates were conducted at 7 of the largest known caves on the monument. We identified 52 morphospecies including 44 arthropods, 4 bats, and 4 other vertebrates. Of the cave-dwelling arthropods, we found 10 eisodophiles, 6 troglophiles, 8 questionable troglophiles, 7 trogloxenes, 8 …

Phylogeography Of The Scaled Quail In The American Southwest, Damon Williford, Randy W. Deyoung, Rodney L. Honeycutt, Leonard A. Brennan, Fidel Hernández
Western North American Naturalist
We used sequences from the mitochondrial control region to examine the phylogeography and historical demography of the Scaled Quail and to determine whether the geographic distributions of mtDNA genealogy were concordant with the distribution of the subspecies. Overall, the Scaled Quail exhibited lower haplotype and nucleotide diversity than other quail species. The highest levels of haplotype diversity were found in 3 Texas counties: Dimmit, La Salle, and Hudspeth. The Scaled Quail exhibited no phylogeographic structure among its 16 haplotypes, and the patterns of genetic variation were not congruent with potential geographic barriers or current subspecies taxonomy. The geographic distribution of …

Successfully managing wetlands requires monitoring changes in plant community composition. We used remote sensing techniques to document the replacement of desirable native wetland vegetation with invasive species in response to catastrophic flood disturbance in the 1980s and to evaluate wetland vegetation management between 1998 and 2010. We conducted our study at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge wetlands, which are located on the northeastern arm of the Great Salt Lake in northern Utah. We acquired high-resolution airborne multispectral imagery of the refuge in 1992 and 2010 to quantify changes in vegetation cover over time. We produced classified vegetation maps for …

New Species And Records Of Chihuahuan Desert Springsnails, With A New Combination For Tryonia Brunei, Robert Hershler, J. Jerry Landye, Hsiu-Ping Liu, Mauricio De La Maza–Benignos, Pavel Ornelas, Evan W. Carson
Western North American Naturalist
This is the last in a series of papers clarifying the taxonomy of a critically imperiled assemblage of cochliopid gastropods (Tryonia sensu lato) that inhibit thermal springs in the Chihuahuan Desert (Mexico and United States). We describe 2 new narrowly endemic species of Tryonia from Chihuahua, both of which appear to have been recently extirpated, and we provide new records for 4 congeners (also from Chihuahua) and for a species of Pseudotryonia (from Durango). The 2 new species of Tryonia differ from closely similar regional congeners in shell and penial characters. On the basis of new anatomical data, we …

Temperature Does Not Affect The Timing Of First Nest Departure In Orange-Crowned Warblers, Jessica J. Ims, Helen R. Sofaer, T. Scott Sillett, Cameron K. Ghalambor
Western North American Naturalist
Organisms often respond to variation in temperature by altering their behavior, but the sensitivity of each behavioral trait depends on the degree to which temperature affects its costs and benefits. Here, we tested whether a little-studied trait, the timing of the first nest departure in the morning, varied in response to ambient temperature at sunrise, sunrise time, and nesting stage (incubation vs. nestling) in female Orange-crowned Warblers breeding on Santa Catalina Island, California. We found that the time of first nest departure was significantly correlated with sunrise time but was not affected by ambient temperature at sunrise. Compared with the …
