The Effect Of Student Gender On Secondary School Teacher Perceptions Of Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Concerns, Erin Ann Williams
The Effect Of Student Gender On Secondary School Teacher Perceptions Of Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Concerns, Erin Ann Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Students at risk for social, emotional and behavioral concerns (SEBC) are likely to experience a variety of negative outcomes if not identified and provided with appropriate interventions in a timely manner. Males tend to be identified more frequently than females for SEBC (Young, Sabbah, Young, Reiser, & Richardson, 2010), and there are many variables that may contribute to this disproportionate identification. This study specifically examined the influence of student gender on secondary education teachers’ referral decisions for students at risk for SEBC. This study additionally examined the influence of teachers’ prior referral experience, confidence in the mental health services available …

Literary Adaptations Of James In Roth's, Ozick's, And Franzen's Work, John Carlos Rowe
Literary Adaptations Of James In Roth's, Ozick's, And Franzen's Work, John Carlos Rowe
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Literary Adaptations of James in Roth's, Ozick's, and Franzen's Work" John Carlos Rowe posits that Henry James continues to exert a powerful influence on contemporary writers. Given the dramatic social, economic, and political changes from modern to postmodern eras, his continuing influence requires explanation. Rowe considers three US-American novelists—Philip Roth, Cynthia Ozick, and Jonathan Franzen—who are influenced by James and presents an interpretation of James's continuing impact. Despite James's reputation as a cosmopolitan modern who influenced global literature in significant ways, US-American writers attempt to "Americanize" him. Their effort expresses the problem of contemporary US-American literary practice …

Feeling Images: Subjectivities And Affective Experience In The Egyptian Revolution, Brice Woodcock
Feeling Images: Subjectivities And Affective Experience In The Egyptian Revolution, Brice Woodcock
Theses and Dissertations
During the Egyptian Revolution, beginning in 2011 and continuing throughout this project,, images were used to garner support for or against various movements. When viewers disagreed with the version of events suggested by the images, these viewers remained unmoved by them even if the image depicted violence or death. In order to understand how this is possible, this work undertakes a study of the intimate relationship between affect and the viewer's point-of view, also known as their “subjectivity" in the context of images from the Egyptian Revolution. The participants of this project were not passive observers, but rather almost instantaneously …
Transcriptomics Of Iron Limitation In Phaeocystis Antarctica, Mariam Reyad Rizkallah Issak
Transcriptomics Of Iron Limitation In Phaeocystis Antarctica, Mariam Reyad Rizkallah Issak
Theses and Dissertations
Phytoplankton, the hidden trees of the ocean, are responsible for nearly half of global oxygen production. Phytoplankton growth and productivity in high-nitrate low-chlorophyll (HNLC) regions have been demonstrated to be limited by iron availability. One of the most important HNLC regions is the Southern Ocean, as it regulates Earth system climate due to its unique hydrography and consequently its phytoplankton assemblage drives the global carbon cycle. Iron fertilization experiments were conducted to understand the response of its photosynthetic assemblage to iron addition, and the nanoflagellate Phaeocystis antarctica has been reported the first to bloom. P. antarctica is ecologically important due …

Polyketide Synthase Iii Isolated From Uncultured Deep-Sea Proteobacterium From The Red Sea- Functional And Evolutionary Characterization, Hadeel Mansour El Bardisy
Theses and Dissertations
Natural polyketide products are one of the major secondary metabolites produced among bacteria, fungi, and plants. They vary from flavonoids, pyrones, and stilbenes to phloroglucinols and resorcinols that are involved in important functions as antimicrobial activity, defense mechanisms and pigmentation. They are biosynthesized from acyl-CoA precursors by polyketides synthases (PKSs) that are categorized into 3 types: I, II and III. PKS type III is considered the simplest in its structure. It was believed that PKS type III was exclusively encoded by higher plants until the enduring efforts of bacterial genomes sequencing revealed the presence of more and more PKSs type …

Theses and Dissertations
Due to the crucial antioxidant role of Thioredoxin (Trx) system in various vital cellular processes; DNA synthesis, oxidative stress defense, protein folding, apoptosis and cell growth, this fundamental system is widely expressed in mostly all life's kingdoms. Thus using metagenomic approaches to characterize novel Trx system in unexplored harsh environment will open the window for understanding the evolution of Trx system and its unique adaptation in extreme habitations. One of the unexplored unique ecosystems is the Red Sea's Atalntis II brine pool, specifically, the lower convective layer (LCL). The exceptional harsh conditions of the LCL; anoxic condition, high temperature around …
The Impact Of Nutrition And Feeding Time On The Regulation Of Gene Expression In The Central Circadian Clock Of Drsosophila Melanogaster, Arwa Diab
Theses and Dissertations
The circadian clock plays an essential role in most organisms by allowing their adaptation to the daily environmental changes mainly light/dark cycles and also temperature. Circadian rhythms persist in constant conditions indicating an auto regulatory molecular circadian clock. Here, we investigated the possibility that the circadian clock of Drosophila can also be entrained by scheduled feeding. Cycles of 12 hours feeding and 12 hours starvation could entrain the molecular circadian oscillation in key pacemaker neurons of Drosophila. Clock proteins CLOCK (CLK) and PERIOD (PER) showed a 24 hour oscillation in the small and large ventral lateral neurons after entrainment by …
A Method Of Correction For The Effect Of Optical Traps In Equilibrium Microrheology Experiments, Elhassan Elsabry
A Method Of Correction For The Effect Of Optical Traps In Equilibrium Microrheology Experiments, Elhassan Elsabry
Theses and Dissertations
Optically trapped dielectric particles experience a linear restoring force due to the trapping laser beam for small displacements of the trapped beads from the center of the optical trap. The optical force adds an apparent contribution to the measured shear elastic modulus of the solution in microrheology experiments. Traditional methods of correcting for the effect of the trap and obtaining the true shear elastic modulus of the solution involved taking measurements in separate purely viscous solutions using similar but not identical trapped beads under the same experimental conditions. A new method is proposed in this research to do this correction. …

Adolescent Reactions To Maternal Responsiveness And Internalizing Symptomatology: A Daily Diary Investigation, Lisa Jobe-Shields, Gilbert R. Parra, Kelly E. Buckholdt, Rachel N. Tillery
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
A daily diary methodology was employed to gather teens’ perceptions of maternal responsiveness to daily stressful events and teens’ reactions to maternal responsiveness in a diverse sample (792 entries from 104 teens; 81% African American, mean age 13.7 years). Additionally, parents and teens completed baseline reports of internalizing symptoms. Diary findings were congruent with prior studies employing self-report measures of global maternal responses to emotion (e.g., higher probability of Accepting reactions to supportive responses, higher probabilities of Attack, Avoid-Withdraw reactions to non-supportive responses). Elevated baseline internalizing symptoms were related to perception of elevated Punish and Magnify responses during the week, …

Theses and Dissertations
This study is meant to tell the story of the Muslim Brotherhood Sisters (Al-Akhawat Al-Muslimat) in urban Cairo, Egypt. It mainly attempts to answer two questions: (1) what motivates the Sisters’ Islamic activism within the Brotherhood and within the Egyptian society at large despite its huge risks? (2) how do they (re)construct, contest and relate to the gender ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood? Relying on ethnographic fieldwork, this study explores the ways through which the Sisters of the Muslim Brotherhood conceptualize their engagement in Islamist politics amid the crackdown of 2013. Through examining the Muslim Brotherhood’s contexts, contention repertoires and …
Divalent Copper Compounds As Inhibitory Agents Of Influenza A, Nathan Allan Gordon
Divalent Copper Compounds As Inhibitory Agents Of Influenza A, Nathan Allan Gordon
Theses and Dissertations
Influenza A virus (IAV) exhibits a high mutation frequency. Mutations in primary viral targets such as hemagglutinin, neuraminidase, and the proton channel M2 have afforded IAV with substantial drug resistance to previously effective drugs such as oseltamivir and amantadine (AMT) along with their analogs. One of the main drug-resistant alterations in the M2 protein that has become ubiquitous is the mutation S31N. Divalent copper has previously been suggested to have anti-IAV properties using in vitro assays involving Xenopus oocytes and SSNMR. In this work, the EC50 of AMT, two AMT analogs, CuCl2 · 2H2O, and four …
Analysis Of Nucleosome Mobility, Fragility, And Recovery: From Embryonic Stem Cells To Invitrosomes, Ashley Nicolle Wright
Analysis Of Nucleosome Mobility, Fragility, And Recovery: From Embryonic Stem Cells To Invitrosomes, Ashley Nicolle Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Several factors direct the placement of specific nucleosomes, which in turn have the ability to regulate DNA accessibility. These factors include, but are not limited to, nucleotide sequence preference, nucleotide modifications, the type of histones present within the nucleosome, and the presence of additional transcription factor or chromatin remodelers. A combination of these and other factors are responsible for tightly controlled efficient transcription within the eukaryotic cell. In order to contribute to the understanding of these complicated processes, three separate hypothesis-driven investigations were carried out. First, we looked into nucleosome positioning and phasing within closely related cells lines. Second, we …

Theoretical Triple-Differential Cross Sections Of A Methane Molecule By A Proper-Average Method, Hari Chaluvadi, C. G. Ning, Don H. Madison
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
For the last few years, our group has calculated cross sections for electron-impact ionization of molecules using the molecular three-body distorted-wave approximation coupled with the orientation-averaged molecular orbital (OAMO) approximation. This approximation was very successful for calculating ionization cross sections for hydrogen molecules and to a lesser extent nitrogen molecules. Recently we used the approximation to calculate single ionization cross sections for the 1t2 state of methane (CH4) and we found major discrepancies with the experimental data. Here we investigate the validity of the OAMO approximation by calculating cross sections that have been properly averaged over all …
Idealism And Pragmatism In The Rhetoric Of John Boehner: A Weaverian Analysis Of Congressional Discourse, Cody Hawley
Idealism And Pragmatism In The Rhetoric Of John Boehner: A Weaverian Analysis Of Congressional Discourse, Cody Hawley
Masters Theses
American political rhetoric is characterized by a synthesis of contradictory idealistic and pragmatic elements, both of which are necessary if there is to be convincing persuasion. The way in which politicians rhetorically approach this dichotomy is significant, however, current studies on the topic are limited to presidential discourse. There is little research on this topic in other settings such the United States House of Representatives. This criticism analyzes John Boehner's congressional rhetoric in the idealistic-pragmatic dichotomy. The critical method utilized is Richard Weaver's four forms of argument-genus, similitude, consequence, and circumstance. Eight speeches of John Boehner, four from his position …
Geochemical Effect And Fate Of Gold Nanoparticles (Aunps) In Saturated Soil Matrices, Theodore D. Williams
Geochemical Effect And Fate Of Gold Nanoparticles (Aunps) In Saturated Soil Matrices, Theodore D. Williams
Theses - ALL
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are extensively used in a number of applications including molecular detection through surface-enhanced Raman scattering, multifunctional nanocarriers for drug delivery, cancer diagnosis and treatment, catalysis and photonic/plasmonic devices. However, environmental fate and toxicity of AuNPs are not well understood or characterized. In this work, AuNPs of different concentrations were introduced and allowed to filter through various soil matrices in an effort to determine the physico-chemical interactions between the AuNPs and the aqueous porous soil medium. AuNPs deposition onto the soil particles and the mechanisms of their transport and release into the soil matrix are key factors that …
Isolation Of Polyacetylene: Exploring The Properties Of Isolated, Oriented, And Insulated Polyacetylene Utilizing Inclusion Crystal Chemistry, Amanda F. Lashua
Isolation Of Polyacetylene: Exploring The Properties Of Isolated, Oriented, And Insulated Polyacetylene Utilizing Inclusion Crystal Chemistry, Amanda F. Lashua
Dissertations - ALL
The creation of isolated, oriented and insulated polyacetylene (PA) chains was assisted by utilizing the favorable features of self assembling inclusion compounds to form inclusion complexes (IC). Calculations suggesting that conducting or even superconducting behavior is anticipated for a one-dimensional, "infinite", isolated PA chain led to the desire to experimentally synthesize this polymer in a manner consistent with the model underlying the theoretical treatment. A two-pronged approach was taken to accomplish this objective. The first method proposed was to isolate a small molecule PA precursor, with terminal end groups that are favorable to cleavage with UV irradiation, in an IC. …

Cooperative Construction in Schools in California
John M. Donley
The construction industry has lost efficiency since 1964, while becoming increasingly more litigious. Schools in California can ill afford the time to allow the construction industry time to fully evolve. It may take years or decades to fully improve the efficiency of, and reduce the conflict within the construction industry.
At the same time, the construction industry has developed new processes to improve efficiency and reduce conflict. These processes are beginning to be broadly embraced by the industry. They all contain cooperative elements. Taken together they represent a new organizing principle …

The Impacts Of Triclosan On Anaerobic Community Structures, Function, And Antimicrobial Resistance, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Timothy M. Lapara, Paige J. Novak
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Triclosan is a widespread antimicrobial agent that accumulates in anaerobic digesters used to treat the residual solids generated at municipal wastewater treatment plants; there is very little information, however, about how triclosan impacts microbial communities in anaerobic digesters. We investigated how triclosan impacts the community structure, function and antimicrobial resistance genes in lab-scale anaerobic digesters. Previously exposed (to triclosan) communities were amended with 5, 50, and 500 mg/kg of triclosan, corresponding to the median, 95th percentile, and 4-fold higher than maximum triclosan concentration that has been detected in U.S. biosolids. Triclosan amendment caused all of the Bacteria and Archaea communities …

Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infects 170 million individuals worldwide. Although several newly FDA approved drugs targeting the HCV serine protease and polymerase have shown promising results, there is a need for better drugs that are effective in treating all HCV genotypes and subtypes to be used in an interferon-free regimen. On the other hand, malaria is another public health burden that causes 219 million clinical episodes, and 660,000 deaths per year. In addition, 3.3 billion people live in areas at risk of malaria transmission in 106 countries. It is alarming that 86% of deaths caused by malaria globally were in …
Beyond The Rhetoric Promises Of The Egyptian Sexual Harassment Law: A Study Of The Relationship Between Law And Domination, Nihal Mostafa Abdel Akher
Beyond The Rhetoric Promises Of The Egyptian Sexual Harassment Law: A Study Of The Relationship Between Law And Domination, Nihal Mostafa Abdel Akher
Theses and Dissertations
After decades of male supremacy, it is not surprising to find that social institutions, including the government and the legal system, have a role in maintaining and reproducing the established order of domination. This study seeks to understand the relationship of law to domination. It argues that law serves the dominant society in two ways. The first is that law legitimates power of the established order, relations of domination, and itself. This happens when the practice of law reinforces the established order of domination while maintaining its own principle of fairness. This means that law proclaims a deceitful image of …
