Gender Schemas, Parenting Styles, And Aggression, Juliet Janicik Dec 2014

Gender Schemas, Parenting Styles, And Aggression, Juliet Janicik

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph:

Many different facets shape gender roles during the development of a child into adolescence. From parenting styles to media influences, children learn by observation and are swayed by the plethora or lack of adults in their lives. This control is not only important for the healthy development of their social and emotional well-being, but also for the development of their cognitions and memory in difficult situations (Liben & Signorella, 1993). Though all humans have the ability to make their own decisions, they are haunted and pressured by the influence …

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a non-lymphomatous, squamous-cell carcinoma that occurs in the epithelial lining of the nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma has a geographically well-defined distribution worldwide, with the highest prevalence in China, Southeast Asia, and Northern Africa. Symptoms of nascent NPC may be unapparent or trivial, with diagnosis based on the histopathology of biopsied tissue following endoscopy of the nasopharynx. The tumor node metastasis (TNM) staging system is the benchmark for the prognosis of NPC and guides treatment strategy. However, there is a consensus that the TNM system is not sufficiently specific for the prognosis of NPC, as it does not …

Prognostic Value Of Lymphocyte Vascular Density And E-Cadherin In Inflammatory Breast Cancer, Paul H. Levine, Heather J. Hoffman, Audra Macneil, Salman Hashmi, Sherry X. Yang, Stephen Hewitt, Kenneth L. Van Golen, Sandra M. Swain

Epidemiology Faculty Publications

Background: We recently evaluated four laboratory assays, vascular endothelial growth factor D (VEGF-D), E-cadherin, lymphatic vessel density (LVD) measured by podoplanin, and intra-lymphatic tumor emboli (ILTE), which showed notable differences between inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and non-inflammatory locally advanced breast cancer (LABC). In this study we investigated the potential of the three most quantitatively measured markers, E-cadherin, LVD and VEGF-D, to predict survival in the IBC patients.

Materials and Methods: This study involved the 100 cases identified in the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Registry (IBCR) whose tumors were previously evaluated for the four assays noted above. Living patients were recontacted and …

Vol. 6 No. 1, Fall 2014; Protecting The Sanctity Of Family: An Argument For The Equitable Parent Doctrine, Kelli Schmidt

Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement

This Comment examines the rights of men who held themselves out as a child's father or who did not know they were the biological father with a focus on the equitable parent doctrine. Because the equitable parent doctrine has not been adopted in Illinois, the author proposes new legislation. The proposed legislation establishes factors to assist a court in determining when a man should be granted rights to a child with respect to two different scenarios: first, if he held himself out as the child's father, but ultimately found out he was not the biological father, or second, if the …

The Curious Incident Of The Supreme Court In Myriad Genetics, Dan L. Burk Dec 2014

The Curious Incident Of The Supreme Court In Myriad Genetics, Dan L. Burk

Notre Dame Law Review

Often what is not said is as significant as what is said. In its recent Myriad Genetics decision, the United States Supreme Court is curiously silent about the relationship between its holding in that case and the holding in its immediately previous patent subject matter case, Mayo v. Prometheus. This reticence is all the more puzzling given that the Court initially remanded Myriad to the lower courts for reconsideration in light of the Mayo holding. The Court’s silence regarding Mayo leaves uncertain the relationship between the “products of nature” doctrine that serves as the basis for the Myriad decision, and …

Circadian Rhythms Of Crawling And Swimming In The Nudibranch Mollusc Melibe Leonina, Winsor H. Watson Iii, James M. Newcomb, Lauren E. Kirouac, Amanda A. Naimie Dec 2014

Circadian Rhythms Of Crawling And Swimming In The Nudibranch Mollusc Melibe Leonina, Winsor H. Watson Iii, James M. Newcomb, Lauren E. Kirouac, Amanda A. Naimie

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

Daily rhythms of activity driven by circadian clocks are expressed by many organisms, including molluscs. We initiated this study, with the nudibranch Melibe leonina, with four goals in mind: (1) determine which behaviors are expressed with a daily rhythm; (2) investigate which of these rhythmic behaviors are controlled by a circadian clock; (3) determine if a circadian clock is associated with the eyes or optic ganglia of Melibe, as it is in several other gastropods; and (4) test the hypothesis that Melibe can use extraocular photoreceptors to synchronize its daily rhythms to natural light-dark cycles. To address these goals, we …

Protein-Coated Nanoparticles Are Internalized By The Epithelial Cells Of The Female Reproductive Tract And Induce Systemic And Mucosal Immune Responses, Savannah E Howe, Vjollca Konjufca Dec 2014

Protein-Coated Nanoparticles Are Internalized By The Epithelial Cells Of The Female Reproductive Tract And Induce Systemic And Mucosal Immune Responses, Savannah E Howe, Vjollca Konjufca

Publications

The female reproductive tract (FRT) includes the oviducts (fallopian tubes), uterus, cervix and vagina. A layer of columnar epithelium separates the endocervix and uterus from the outside environment, while the vagina is lined with stratified squamous epithelium. The mucosa of the FRT is exposed to antigens originating from microflora, and occasionally from infectious microorganisms. Whether epithelial cells (ECs) of the FRT take up (sample) the lumen antigens is not known. To address this question, we examined the uptake of 20-40 nm nanoparticles (NPs) applied vaginally to mice which were not treated with hormones, epithelial disruptors, or adjuvants. We found that …

Effect Of Predator Type, Season, Brood Size, And West Nile Virus Infection On The Nest Defense Behavior Of Male And Female Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia Sialis), Kayde L. Gilbert, Gary L. Ritchison Dec 2014

Effect Of Predator Type, Season, Brood Size, And West Nile Virus Infection On The Nest Defense Behavior Of Male And Female Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia Sialis), Kayde L. Gilbert, Gary L. Ritchison

Biological Sciences Faculty and Staff Research

Parent birds may benefit by defending nests from potential predators if such behavior increases the likelihood that their young will survive. However, such behavior may also be costly, with some risk of injury or even death. Thus, because birds seek to maximize life-time reproductive success rather than current reproductive success, parents must assess the danger posed by a potential nest predator and then choose appropriate responses (Radford and Blakey 2000)

Long Wavelength Analysis Of A Model For The Geographic Spread Of A Disease, Layachi Hadji Dec 2014

Long Wavelength Analysis Of A Model For The Geographic Spread Of A Disease, Layachi Hadji

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We investigate the temporal and spatial evolution of the spread of an infectious disease by performing a long-wavelength analysis of a classical model for the geographic spread of a rabies epidemic in a population of foxes subject to idealized boundary conditions. We consider twodimensional and three-dimensional landscapes consisting of an infinite horizontal strip bounded by two walls a finite distance apart and a horizontal region bounded above and below by horizontal walls, respectively. A nonlinear partial differential evolution Equation for the leading order of infectives is derived. The Equation captures the space and time variations of the spread of the …

A Semiparametric Estimation For Regression Functions In The Partially Linear Autoregressive Time Series Model, R. Farnoosh, M. Hajebi, S. J. Mortazavi Dec 2014

A Semiparametric Estimation For Regression Functions In The Partially Linear Autoregressive Time Series Model, R. Farnoosh, M. Hajebi, S. J. Mortazavi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a semiparametric method is proposed for estimating regression function in the partially linear autoregressive time series model . Here, we consider a combination of parametric forms and nonlinear functions, in which the errors are independent. Semiparametric and nonparametric curve estimation provides a useful tool for exploring and understanding the structure of a nonlinear time series data set to make for a more efficient study in the partially linear autoregressive model. The unknown parameters are estimated using the conditional nonlinear least squares method, and the nonparametric adjustment is also estimated by defining and minimizing the local L2 -fitting …

Modelling The Dynamics Of A Renewable Resource Under Harvesting With Taxation As A Control Variable, B. Dubey, Atasi Patra, S. K. Sahani

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The present paper describes a model of resource biomass and population with a non-linear catch rate function on resource biomass. The harvesting effort is assumed to be a dynamical variable. Tax on per unit harvested resource biomass is used as a tool to control exploitation of the resource. Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle is used to find the optimal control to maintain the resource biomass and population at an optimal level. A numerical simulation is also carried out to support the analytical results.

Continental-Scale Isotope Hydrology, Scott Jasechko Dec 2014

Continental-Scale Isotope Hydrology, Scott Jasechko

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Providing sustainable sources of fresh water for a growing population of 7 billion people is one of the grand challenges of the 21st century. This dissertation outlines several applications of isotope hydrology to address four previously unknown questions involving surface- and ground-water resources at regional- to continental-spatial scales over contemporary- to millennial-temporal scales. The four chapters in this dissertation investigate (1) the rate of plant transpiration, (2) the seasonality of groundwater recharge, (3) the climate of the last ice age, and (4) the chemistry of Ugandan waters. (1) Chapter one presents a new global compilation of lake water isotopic data, …

Effects Of Patient Factors On Implantation Rates In In Vitro Fertilization, Heidi Richardson, Sofia Soto Dec 2014

Effects Of Patient Factors On Implantation Rates In In Vitro Fertilization, Heidi Richardson, Sofia Soto

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The purpose of this report is to evaluate the effects of patient factors and embryo quality on the implantation rate in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). For this report, statistical methods are used to test the significance of several patient and embryo characteristics on embryo implantation rate. This project is an analysis of data collected from over 36,000 patients.

The analysis concluded several findings. There was enough statistical evidence to conclude that age was significant in regards to implantation rate and FSH levels. As the patient ages, the amount of FSH levels found in their blood increases. A patient with high …

Carbon Nanotube Sensors And Field Emitters, Ben Pound Dec 2014

Carbon Nanotube Sensors And Field Emitters, Ben Pound

Physics Capstone Projects

Carbon nanotube (CNT) forests are arrays of free-standing CNTs, as seen in Fig. 1a. The goal of this project was to deposit 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) evenly on each CNT. The motivation is that CNTs cannot effectively participate in chemical reactions by themselves. However, DAN can bind to the CNT surface in such a way that it can participate in chemical reactions while staying on the CNT side wall1. If DAN could be coated evenly on the CNTs throughout the forest, it could make a very sensitive biological sensor. A sensor is only as good as the number of detection …

The Drosophila T-Box Transcription Factor Midline Functions Within The Insulin/Akt And C-Jun-N-Terminal Kinase Signaling Pathways To Regulate Interomatidial Bristle Formation And Cell Survival, Qichuan Chen Dec 2014

The Drosophila T-Box Transcription Factor Midline Functions Within The Insulin/Akt And C-Jun-N-Terminal Kinase Signaling Pathways To Regulate Interomatidial Bristle Formation And Cell Survival, Qichuan Chen

Master's Theses

From a genetic and allelic modifier screen, we report that the Drosophila melanogaster T-box transcription factor midline (mid), a homolog to the human TBX20 gene, interacts with dFOXO within the insulin receptor (InR) and the c-Jun-N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathways to regulate interommatidial bristle (IOB) formation. Previous studies have identified mid’s role in cell fate specification of sensory organ precursor cells in conjunction with the Notch-Delta signaling pathway (Das et al., 2013). The Notch, InR, and JNK signaling pathways regulate dFOXO activity under conditions of stress. Thus, we determined the effects of oxidative stress and metabolic stress by …

Solution Of The Sir Models Of Epidemics Using Msgdtm, Asad A. Freihat, Ali H. Handam

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Stochastic compartmental (e.g., SIR) models have proven useful for studying the epidemics of childhood diseases while taking into account the variability of the epidemic dynamics. Here, we use the multi-step generalized differential transform method (MSGDTM) to approximate the numerical solution of the SIR model and numerical simulations are presented graphically.

Issues With The Uses Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Fmri) In Education, Burhanettin Keskin Dec 2014

Issues With The Uses Of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Fmri) In Education, Burhanettin Keskin

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

This paper is aimed at addressing some of the main issues with regard to use of neuroimaging (i.e., fMRI) in educational settings; such as the issue of equating structure with function; the issue of finding an accurate reference point for normal brain structure and function; issues due to brain plasticity; and issues related to the interpretation of neuroimaging findings. In addition, the implications of such concerns were addressed. It was concluded that the lack of research on the issues regarding the use of neuroimaging jeopardizes the possible use of such unique technology and any educational practice based on neuroimaging would …

Achievement Gaps And The Doubly Disadvantaged: The Intersection Of Socioeconomic Status And Race/Ethnicity On Math And Reading Trajectories, Littisha A. Bates Dec 2014

Achievement Gaps And The Doubly Disadvantaged: The Intersection Of Socioeconomic Status And Race/Ethnicity On Math And Reading Trajectories, Littisha A. Bates

Journal of Contemporary Research in Education

Numerous studies have examined both the income and race/ethnic achievement gaps. These gaps are particularly striking in the case of minority children, who are more likely than their non- Hispanic white counterparts to be living in poverty. This overlap in achievement gaps makes it difficult to clearly identify the most disadvantaged children. Using two designations in No Child Left Behind (NCLB), socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity, this study examines math and reading trajectories as children move through elementary school. Applying multilevel growth curves to four waves of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99, I examine the intersection of …

A Mitochondrial Haplogroup Is Associated With Decreased Longevity In A Historic New World Population, Loredana Castri, Donata Luiselli, Davide Pettener, Mauricio Melendez-Obando, Ramón Villegas-Palma, Ramiro Barrantes, Lorena Madrigal

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Interest in mitochondrial influences on extended longevity has been mounting, as demonstrated by a growing literature. Such work has demonstrated that some haplogroups are associated with increased longevity and that such associations are population-specific. Most previous work however, suffers from the methodological shortcoming that long-lived individuals are compared with “controls” who are born decades after the aged individuals were. The only true controls of the elderly are people who were born on the same time period, but who did not have extended longevity. Here we present results of a study in which we are able to test if longevity is …

Book Review Of 'Evolutionary And Interpretive Archaeologies' Edited By Ethan E. Cochrane And Andrew Gardner, Liane Gabora, Carl P. Lipo

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Evolutionary and Interpretive Archaeologies, edited by Ethan E. Cochrane and
Andrew Gardner, grew out of a seminar at the Institute for Archaeology at
University College London in 2007. It consists of 15 chapters by archaeologists
who self-identify themselves as practitioners who emphasize the benefits of
evolutionary or interpretive approaches to the study of the archaeological
record. While the authors' theoretical views are dichotomous, the editors' aim
for the book as a whole is not to expound on the differences between these two
kinds of archaeology but to bring forward a richer understanding of the
discipline and to highlight areas of …

The Importance Of Maintaining Upland Forest Habitat Surrounding Salamander Breeding Ponds: Case Study Of The Eastern Tiger Salamander In New York, Usa, Valorie Titus, Dale Madison, Timothy Green Dec 2014

The Importance Of Maintaining Upland Forest Habitat Surrounding Salamander Breeding Ponds: Case Study Of The Eastern Tiger Salamander In New York, Usa, Valorie Titus, Dale Madison, Timothy Green

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Most amphibians use both wetland and upland habitats, but the extent of their movement in forested habitats is poorly known. We used radiotelemetry to observe the movements of adult and juvenile eastern tiger salamanders over a 4-year period. Females tended to move farther from the breeding ponds into upland forested habitat than males, while the distance a juvenile moved appeared to be related to body size, with the largest individuals moving as far as the adult females. Individuals chose refugia in native pitch pine-oak forested habitat and avoided open fields, roads, and developed areas. We also observed a difference in …
