Purpose. Albinism is associated with disrupted foveal development, though intersubject variability is becoming appreciated. We sought to quantify this variability, and examine the relationship between foveal cone specialization and pit morphology in patients with a clinical diagnosis of albinism.

Methods. We recruited 32 subjects with a clinical diagnosis of albinism. DNA was obtained from 25 subjects, and known albinism genes were analyzed for mutations. Relative inner and outer segment (IS and OS) lengthening (fovea-to-perifovea ratio) was determined from manually segmented spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) B-scans. Foveal pit morphology was quantified for eight subjects from macular SD-OCT volumes. Ten subjects …

The Evolving Approach To Ethical Issues In Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: A Review Based On Illustrative Case Vignettes, K. K. Venkat, Anne Eshelman Jul 2014

The Evolving Approach To Ethical Issues In Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: A Review Based On Illustrative Case Vignettes, K. K. Venkat, Anne Eshelman

Nephrology Articles

Living donor kidney transplantation which involves performing a major surgical procedure on a healthy person solely to benefit another person has always involved dealing with difficult ethical issues. Beneficence, non-maleficence, donor autonomy, altruistic donor motivation, coercion-free donation, fully informed consent and avoidance of medical paternalism have been the dominant ethical principles governing this field ever since the first successful living donor kidney transplant in 1954. The increasing reliance on living donors due to the rapidly growing disparity between the number of patients awaiting transplantation and the availability of deceased donor kidneys has brought with it a variety of new ethical …

The Saco River Plume: A Discussion Of The Near-Field Dynamics, Barbara A. Fortier Jul 2014

The Saco River Plume: A Discussion Of The Near-Field Dynamics, Barbara A. Fortier

All Theses And Dissertations

This study focused on the freshwater discharge plume from the Saco River in southwestern Maine to determine the mechanisms responsible for the largest impacts on the near-field dynamics in this region. We examined the forcing factors that tended to increase the plume's spatial extent upshelf of the river mouth. Salinity, temperature, and density data were collected during cruises from May through November 2010 and by two surface moorings deployed upshelf of the Saco River mouth. We found a distinct variation in the latitude of the upshelf boundary of the plume during and after periods of high discharge. Furthermore, we found …

Dynamic Forest Federalism, Blake Hudson Jul 2014

Dynamic Forest Federalism, Blake Hudson

Journal Articles

State and local governments have long maintained regulatory authority to manage natural resources, and most subnational governments have politically exercised that authority to some degree. Policy makers, however, have increasingly recognized that the dynamic attributes of natural resources make them difficult to manage on any one scale of government. As a result, the nation has shifted toward multilevel governance known as “dynamic federalism” for many if not most regulatory subject areas, especially in the context of the natural environment. The nation has done so both legally and politically — the constitutional validity of expanded federal regulatory authority over resources has …

Characterization Of Lipid-Anchored Inhibitor Rulers As A Measure Of Enzyme Topography In Coagulation Enzyme Factor Xa, Robin C. Conley Jul 2014

Characterization Of Lipid-Anchored Inhibitor Rulers As A Measure Of Enzyme Topography In Coagulation Enzyme Factor Xa, Robin C. Conley

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

The blood coagulation cascade is activated under various circumstances such as an injury. This system involves a tightly regulated series of events. The enzymes involved assemble with their respective cofactors on lipid membranes to reach their full procoagulant complex potential. The coagulation cascade is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic portions, both of which converge into a common pathway with the activation of factor X (FXa). FXa is a very important part of the blood coagulation cascade because its activation is primarily responsible for thrombin generation. Activation of FXa alone is, however, insufficient to produce a fully …

Extreme Value Analysis Of Rainfall Events Over The Kennedy Space Center Complex, Adam David Schnapp Jul 2014

Extreme Value Analysis Of Rainfall Events Over The Kennedy Space Center Complex, Adam David Schnapp

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The use of observational datasets to determine the occurrence frequencies of extreme weather events has gained a lot of recent interest due to concerns about the potential regional impacts from global climate change. Extreme-value theory can quantify the return frequency of the most extreme events, using climatologically short data sets and the assumption that such short climatological periods are stationary. However, the resulting analyses must be used with caution since they may not accurately reflect the potential of extreme events in the future due to climate change and variability. Accurately predicting extreme-event likelihood is important for building realistic long-range planning …

Faculty Publications

Aim

Scientific debate regarding the future trends, and subsequent ecological, biogeochemical and societal impacts, of gelatinous zooplankton (GZ) in a changing ocean is hampered by lack of a global baseline and an understanding of the causes of biogeographic patterns. We address this by using a new global database of GZ records to test hypotheses relating to environmental drivers of biogeographic variation in the multidecadal baseline of epipelagic GZ biomass in the world's oceans.

Location

Global oceans.

Methods

Over 476,000 global GZ data and metadata items were assembled from a variety of published and unpublished sources. From this, a total of …

Control Of Light Diffusion In A Disordered Photonic Waveguide, Raktim Sarma, Timofey Golubev, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao Jul 2014

Control Of Light Diffusion In A Disordered Photonic Waveguide, Raktim Sarma, Timofey Golubev, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We control the diffusion of light in a disordered photonic waveguide by modulating the waveguide geometry. In a single waveguide of varying cross-section, the diffusion coefficient changes spatially in two dimensions due to localization effects. The intensity distribution inside the waveguide agrees with the prediction of the self-consistent theory of localization. Our work shows that wave diffusion can be efficiently manipulated without modifying the structural disorder.

To Make Freedom Happen: Shelby County V. Holder, The Supreme Court, And The Creation Myth Of American Voting Rights, Aderson Bellegarde Francois Jul 2014

To Make Freedom Happen: Shelby County V. Holder, The Supreme Court, And The Creation Myth Of American Voting Rights, Aderson Bellegarde Francois

Northern Illinois University Law Review

There has never been a moment in American history when federal intervention, supervision, or enforcement was not necessary to guarantee full and meaningful voting rights for African Americans. Yet, since ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment, providing that states shall not deny the right to vote on the basis of race, the United States Supreme Court, when deciding questions of the legitimacy of federal enforcement of voting rights, has always reached for a narrative of federalism that cast federal intervention as a historical aberration at best and a constitutional perversion at worst. Since passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 …

Improved Sonothrombolysis From A Modified Diagnostic Transducer Delivering Impulses Containing A Longer Pulse Duration, J. Wu, X. Feng, T. Kumar, J. Liu, J. Lof, W. Shi, E. Carr Everbach, T. R. Porter

Engineering Faculty Works

Although guided high-mechanical-index (MI) impulses from a diagnostic ultrasound transducer have been used in preclinical studies to dissolve coronary arterial and microvascular thrombi in the presence of intravenously infused microbubbles, it is possible that pulse durations (PDs) longer than that used for diagnostic imaging may further improve the effectiveness of this approach. By use of an established in vitro model flow system, a total of 90 occlusive porcine arterial thrombi (thrombus age: 3-4 h) within a vascular mimicking system were randomized to 10-min treatments with two different PDs (5 and 20 mu s) using a Philips S5-1 transducer (1.6-MHz center …

The Role Of Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase 4 In Flower Color Of The Allopolyploid Brassica Napus, Leanne Denice Fogg Jul 2014

The Role Of Carotenoid Cleavage Dioxygenase 4 In Flower Color Of The Allopolyploid Brassica Napus, Leanne Denice Fogg

Master's Theses

Allopolyploids are formed by interspecific hybridization and whole genome duplication, with the resulting organism contains multiple distinct subgenomes in one nucleus. Subgenomic interactions result in massive genetic and epigenetic reconstruction, contributing to variable phenotypic traits noted in newly formed allopolyploids. To better understand these mechanisms in the context of molecular biology, evolution, and plant breeding, plant biologists study the model organism Brassica napus (farmed as canola or oilseed rape). With white-flowering and yellow-flowering progenitors, flower color phenotype of B. napus presents an opportunity to examine subgenomic interactions. CAROTENOID CLEAVAGE DIOXYGENASE 4 (CCD4) is known to play a major …

Affluent Populations And Their Effect On Biological Diversity Through The Consumption Of Meat, Electronics, And Motor Vehicles, Melody Flores

Honors College Theses

The human has caused a far greater impact on the planet's biodiversity than any other species in existence, due to the impact of population, afflluence, and technology. This thesis will argue the importance of biological diversity and how affluent populations are reducing biodiversity through the consumption of meat, electronics, and motor vehicles. Aldo Leopold's "The Land Ethic" and Herman Daly's "The Impossibility Theorem", among others, create a rubric evaluating human activities and provide alternative views on economic impossibilities. Consumption is reviewed from an ecocentric perspective, a holistic outlook placing emphasis on the ecosystem. The reader will become cognizant of their …

The Role Of Prka-Mediated Stimulation Of Fatty Acid Oxidation In The Regulation Of Meiotic Maturation In Mouse Oocytes, Deepa Valsangkar Jul 2014

The Role Of Prka-Mediated Stimulation Of Fatty Acid Oxidation In The Regulation Of Meiotic Maturation In Mouse Oocytes, Deepa Valsangkar

Dissertations (1934 -)

Meiosis is a defining aspect of sexual reproduction and its outcome often determines reproductive success. In mammalian females, oocytes initiate meiosis in early embryonic stages but arrest in the late prophase of meiosis-I around the time of birth. They remain arrested until hormonal induction during reproductive cycles after puberty, and then resume meiosis until a second arrest at metaphase-II. The process of oocyte meiosis from the release of prophase arrest till the metaphase-II arrest is known as oocyte maturation. Meiotic arrest is a result of maintenance of elevated cAMP levels within the oocyte by its continuous production as well as …

The Role Of Friendships Among Latino Male Adolescent Immigrants Who Are Unauthorized, Marcel Hernani Tassara Jul 2014

The Role Of Friendships Among Latino Male Adolescent Immigrants Who Are Unauthorized, Marcel Hernani Tassara

Dissertations (1934 -)

It is estimated that the United States is home to three-quarters of a million immigrant Latina/o youth who do not have proper authorization to be in the country (Passell, 2011). Given their unauthorized status these youth face a bevy of constraining factors, both proximal and distal. Furthermore, migration is typically characterized by a loss of social networks and cultural practices in exchange for disorienting social and cultural changes in a new land (Hernandez & McGoldrick, 1999). The importance of friendships during adolescence, has been well documented across cultures (Hartup, 1996). While a few studies have demonstrated the positive role friendships …

Structural And Functional Studies Of Urea Amidolyase, Yi Lin Jul 2014

Structural And Functional Studies Of Urea Amidolyase, Yi Lin

Dissertations (1934 -)

Urea amidolyase (UAL) is a key virulence factor that regulates the yeast to hyphae switch in the opportunistic pathogen, Candida albicans. UAL is a multi-domain enzyme with two enzyme activities: urea carboxylase (UC) and allophanate hydrolase (AH). UC is a biotin-dependent carboxylase that adds a carboxyl group to urea to make allophanate by the coordinated action of three domains. Allophanate is subsequently hydrolyzed into NH3 and CO2 in the AH domain. Studies on the structure and function of UAL may lead to treatments for systemic candidiasis and can serve to clarify the molecular basis for multi-functional swinging arm enzymes. In …

Mechanisms Of Isometric Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia In Young And Older Adults, Kathy J. Lemley Jul 2014

Mechanisms Of Isometric Exercise-Induced Hypoalgesia In Young And Older Adults, Kathy J. Lemley

Dissertations (1934 -)

Pain reduction following exercise (exercise-induced hypoalgesia; EIH) is well-established in young adults. Specific to isometric exercise, the greatest EIH follows low intensity contractions held for long duration. The EIH response of older adults is not known; and the mechanisms for EIH are unclear at any age. This dissertation aimed to address these unknowns through a series of three studies. In study one, repeatability of pressure pain reports (pain threshold and pain ratings) was assessed in healthy older adults, including the impact of psychological factors. Pain reports, measured before and after quiet rest, did not change following quiet rest. Higher state …

Coordination Of Primer Sugar Synthesis With O-Antigen Initiation In Rhizobium Etli Ce3, Tiezheng Li Jul 2014

Coordination Of Primer Sugar Synthesis With O-Antigen Initiation In Rhizobium Etli Ce3, Tiezheng Li

Dissertations (1934 -)

All organisms synthesize amidosugars, such as N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), and deoxysugars, such as fucose. They are found in important polysaccharides and glycoconjugates such as glycoproteins. N-acetylquinovosamine (QuiNAc) is both an amido- and a deoxy-sugar. It is found in many examples of an important prokaryotic glycoconjugate, the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) that coats the surface of Gram-negative bacteria. Like N-glycosylation of glycoproteins, LPS has a portion that is synthesized first on a polyprenyl lipid carrier and then transferred to the rest of the molecule. QuiNAc is believed to initiate the O-antigen portion of LPS of Rhizobium etli CE3. Genetic studies identified three genes, wreV, …

Improving Fmri Analysis And Mr Reconstruction With The Incorporation Of Mr Relaxivities And Correlation Effect Examination, Meryem Muge Karaman Jul 2014

Improving Fmri Analysis And Mr Reconstruction With The Incorporation Of Mr Relaxivities And Correlation Effect Examination, Meryem Muge Karaman

Dissertations (1934 -)

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) use the physical principles of nuclear MR to provide high resolution representations of brain activity and connectivity. As the fMRI and fcMRI signals are detected from the excited hydrogen atoms in a magnetic field, the acquired data is determined by the underlying physical processes, such as the MR relaxivities. In fMRI and fcMRI, the Fourier encoded frequency space measurements are reconstructed into brain images, then spatiotemporal processing operations are applied before computing the brain activation and connectivity statistics. This dissertation seeks to utilize the magnetic resonance (MR) relaxivities at different …

Screening Out Innovation: The Merits Of Meritless Litigation, Alexander A. Reinert Jul 2014

Screening Out Innovation: The Merits Of Meritless Litigation, Alexander A. Reinert

Indiana Law Journal

Courts and legislatures often conflate meritless and frivolous cases when balancing the desire to keep courthouse doors open to novel or unlikely claims against the concern that entertaining ultimately unsuccessful litigation will prove too costly for courts and defendants. Recently, significant procedural and substantive barriers to civil litigation have been informed by judicial and legislative assumptions about the costs of entertaining meritless and frivolous litigation. The prevailing wisdom is that eliminating meritless and frivolous claims as early in a case’s trajectory as possible will focus scarce resources on the truly meritorious cases, thereby ensuring that available remedies are properly distributed …
