Environmental Variability And Biodiversity Of Megabenthos On The Hebrides Terrace Seamount (Northeast Atlantic), Lea-Anne Henry, Johanne Vad, Helen S. Findlay, Javier Murillo, Rosanna Milligan, J. Murray Roberts Jul 2014

Environmental Variability And Biodiversity Of Megabenthos On The Hebrides Terrace Seamount (Northeast Atlantic), Lea-Anne Henry, Johanne Vad, Helen S. Findlay, Javier Murillo, Rosanna Milligan, J. Murray Roberts

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

We present the first remotely operated vehicle investigation of megabenthic communities (1004–1695 m water depth) on the Hebrides Terrace Seamount (Northeast Atlantic). Conductivity-temperature-depth casts showed rapid light attenuation below the summit and an oceanographic regime on the flanks consistent with an internal tide, and high short-term variability in water temperature, salinity, light attenuation, aragonite and oxygen down to 1500 m deep. Minor changes in species composition (3–14%) were explained by changes in depth, substratum and oceanographic stability, whereas environmental variability explained substantially more variation in species richness (40–56%). Two peaks in species richness occurred, the first at 1300–1400 m where …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: There are multiple ways to address the mental and behavioral health needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

METHOD: In this paper, we do not argue for a particular approach or set of approaches, but instead review the benefits of integrating mental and behavioral health supports with primary healthcare based primarily on our experience in and understanding of healthcare systems in the United States. It is estimated that between 35 and 40% of people with IDD also live with psychiatric disorders. NADD, an association for persons with developmental disabilities and mental health needs in the US holds …

4d Optimization Of Scanned Ion Beam Tracking Therapy For Moving Tumors, John Gordon Eley, Wayne David Newhauser, Robert Lüchtenborg, Christian Graeff, Christoph Bert

Faculty Publications

Motion mitigation strategies are needed to fully realize the theoretical advantages of scanned ion beam therapy for patients with moving tumors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a new four-dimensional (4D) optimization approach for scanned-ion-beam tracking could reduce dose to avoidance volumes near a moving target while maintaining target dose coverage, compared to an existing 3D-optimized beam tracking approach. We tested these approaches computationally using a simple 4D geometrical phantom and a complex anatomic phantom, that is, a 4D computed tomogram of the thorax of a lung cancer patient. We also validated our findings using measurements of …

Solving The Jigsaw Puzzle Of Wound-Healing Potato Cultivars: Metabolite Profiling And Antioxidant Activity Of Polar Extracts, Keyvan Dastmalchi, Qing Cai, Kevin Zhou, Wenlin Huang, Olga Serra, Ruth E. Stark

Publications and Research

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a worldwide food staple, but substantial waste accompanies the cultivation of this crop due to wounding of the outer skin and subsequent unfavorable healing conditions. Motivated by both economic and nutritional considerations, this metabolite profiling study aims to improve understanding of closing layer and wound periderm formation and guide the development of new methods to ensure faster and more complete healing after skin breakage. The polar metabolites of wound-healing tissues from four potato cultivars with differing patterns of tuber skin russeting (Norkotah Russet, Atlantic, Chipeta, and Yukon Gold) were analyzed at three and seven days …

31p Dynamic Nuclear Polarization Applied To Dimethyl Methyl Phphonate For Functional Imaging And Spectroscopic Studies, Roha Afzal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the recent years, Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) has emerged as a very promising technique for enhancing the sensitivity of the magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging (MRSI). A number of nuclei, namely 13C, 15N, 29Si, 89Y, and 129Xe, have been successfully polarized and a few of them have been employed in the in-vivo studies for functional imaging and metabolism. Hyperpolarized 13C-labeled compounds have wide applications in the metabolic and perfusion studies and can be used for early stage disease diagnosis, response to treatment, prognosis etc. DNP has been demonstrated in the 31P nucleus in nucleotides triphosphates as an application for …

The Effect Of Molybdenum On The Molecularcontrol Of Cold Tolerance In Cauliflower(Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis) Artificialseeds, Hail Z. Rihan, Mohammed Al-Issawi, Wondwossen Abate Woldie, Michele Kiernan, Michael P. Fuller Jul 2014

The Effect Of Molybdenum On The Molecularcontrol Of Cold Tolerance In Cauliflower(Brassica Oleracea Var. Botrytis) Artificialseeds, Hail Z. Rihan, Mohammed Al-Issawi, Wondwossen Abate Woldie, Michele Kiernan, Michael P. Fuller

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Molybdenum (Mo) was used to improve the cold tolerance of cauliflower microshoots/artificial seeds. The optimal stage to introduce Mo to the micropropagation system was found to be the microshoots liquid culture stage, since its use within artificial seed capsules or conversion media had negative effects on conversion rate and viability. Mo was found to improve the cold tolerance of both acclimated and non-acclimated microshoots/artificial seeds. The capacity of Mo to up-regulate CBF/DREB1 in cauliflower microshoots was confirmed. Moreover, this study is the first to confirm the ability of this element to upregulate CBF/DREB1 without any low temperature treatment. Mo significantly …

Fundamental Motivation And Perception For A Systems-Level Cognitive Architecture, Ryan James Mccall Jul 2014

Fundamental Motivation And Perception For A Systems-Level Cognitive Architecture, Ryan James Mccall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A comprehensive systems-level cognitive architecture attempts to provide a blueprint for generally capable intelligent software agents or cognitive robots. While such architectures can be conceived and studied at a high level of abstraction, this work focuses primarily on some of the low-level algorithms underlying the architecture. For instance, one might study logical reasoning, decision-making, etc., ignoring or making simplifying assumptions about the perceptual processes producing the representations involved in the higher-level processes. In contrast, critical aspects of cognitive architectures lie in the low-level details of the traditionally identified, abstract modules and processes. Natural selection has imbued biological agents with motivations …

Bartonella Henselae Infection And Host Response In The Zebrafish Embryo Model, Amorce Lima Jul 2014

Bartonella Henselae Infection And Host Response In The Zebrafish Embryo Model, Amorce Lima

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Gram-negative bacterium Bartonella henselae (Bh) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that has been associated with a variety of human diseases including bacillary angiomatosis which is characterized by vasoproliferative tumor-like lesions on the skin and internal organs of some immunosuppressed individuals. Several virulence factors associated with Bartonella-induced pathogenesis have been characterized. However, the study of those virulence factors has been limited to in vitro cell culture systems due to the lack of a practical animal model. Therefore, we wanted to investigate whether the zebrafish embryo (Danio rerio) could be used to model human infection with Bh. We investigated …

Feeding Performance Of King Mackerel, Scomberomorus Cavalla, Amber Rose Ferguson Jul 2014

Feeding Performance Of King Mackerel, Scomberomorus Cavalla, Amber Rose Ferguson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although bite force is a commonly used metric of feeding performance, other factors such as bite pressure and strike speed are also likely to affect prey capture. Therefore, this study investigated static bite force, dynamic speeds, and predator and prey forces resulting from ram strikes, as well as bite pressure of the king mackerel, Scomberomorus cavalla, in order to examine their relative contributions to overall feeding performance. Theoretical posterior bite force ranged from 14.0-318.7 N. Ram speed, recorded with a rod and reel incorporated with a line counter and video camera, ranged from 3.3-15.8 BL/s. Impact forces on the …

Democratizing Public Health: Citizen Empowerment Through The Biothriller Genre, Robert A. Deleo Jul 2014

Democratizing Public Health: Citizen Empowerment Through The Biothriller Genre, Robert A. Deleo

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

Preparedness—the process of readying for emerging threats—is central to contemporary public health, which strives to anticipate potential problems instead of reacting to medical disasters. However, this concept resonates little outside of elite policymaker circles. Instead, many Americans assume policymaking is an inherently reactive process that rewards politicians for “fixing” existing problems. For example, while the prospect of a pandemic influenza outbreak represents one of American’s most pressing concerns, surveys report pervasive public ignorance about many aspects of preparedness and public health, including disease transmission, prevention practices, and the relationship between zoological and human diseases. For many Americans, it seems, exposure …

Effects Of Plant Virus And Its Insect Vector On Encarsia Formosa, A Biocontrol Agent Of Whiteflies, Xiaoyuan Liu, Wensheng Xiang, Xiaoguo Jiao, Youjun Zhang, Wen Xie, Qingjun Wu, Xuguo Zhou, Shaoli Wang

Entomology Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigated the tritrophic interactions among a persistently transmitted plant virus, Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), its insect vector, the sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci, and a parasitoid, Encarsia formosa Gahan, one of the most extensively used biological control agents. As an emerging invasive pest worldwide, the two most damaging whiteflies are B. tabaci B and Q cryptic species. On healthy tomato plants, parasitoid-induced mortality was significantly higher in B. tabaci B than in Q. In contrast, similar mortality levels of B and Q were observed on TYLCV-infected plants. A higher rate of parasitism was consistently observed …

Species-Level View Of Population Structure And Gene Flow For A Critically Endangered Primate (Varecia Variegata), Andrea L. Baden, Sheila M. Holmes, Steig E. Johnson, Shannon E. Engberg, Edward E. Louis, Brenda J. Bradley

Publications and Research

Lemurs are among the world's most threatened mammals. The critically endangered black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata), in particular, has recently experienced rapid population declines due to habitat loss, ecological sensitivities to habitat degradation, and extensive human hunting pressure. Despite this, a recent study indicates that ruffed lemurs retain among the highest levels of genetic diversity for primates. Identifying how this diversity is apportioned and whether gene flow is maintained among remnant populations will help to diagnose and target conservation priorities. We sampled 209 individuals from 19 sites throughout the remaining V. variegata range. We used 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci and …

Hydrodynamics Of Diatom Chains And Semiflexible Fibres, Hoa Nguyen, L. Fauci Jul 2014

Hydrodynamics Of Diatom Chains And Semiflexible Fibres, Hoa Nguyen, L. Fauci

Mathematics Faculty Research

Diatoms are non-motile, unicellular phytoplankton that have the ability to form colonies in the form of chains. Depending upon the species of diatoms and the linking structures that hold the cells together, these chains can be quite stiff or very flexible. Recently, the bending rigidities of some species of diatom chains have been quantified. In an effort to understand the role of flexibility in nutrient uptake and aggregate formation, we begin by developing a three-dimensional model of the coupled elastic-hydrodynamic system of a diatom chain moving in an incompressible fluid. We find that simple beam theory does a good job …

Localized Expansion Of Pedicle Screws For Increased Stability And Safety In The Osteoporotic Spine, Thomas Michael Shea Jul 2014

Localized Expansion Of Pedicle Screws For Increased Stability And Safety In The Osteoporotic Spine, Thomas Michael Shea

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When a patient is diagnosed with various spinal injuries, deformities, or advanced degeneration, it is commonly suggested that he/she undergoes surgery for spinal fusion. Most current procedures in spinal fusion restrict mobility in one or multiple levels of the spine so that, over time, new bone will grow between the levels creating a single motionless unit of bone. The bilateral pedicle screw system (BPSS) has long been considered to be the "gold standard" in spinal fusion. However, for patients with osteoporosis, adequate fixation within the bone-screw interface has continuously been difficult to achieve or has come with high risk of …

A Field Guide To Programming: A Tutorial For Learning Programming And Population Models, Christopher Stieha, Kathryn Montovan, Derik Castillo-Guajardo

CODEE Journal

Programming skills and concepts are best taught within an applied framework in the students' discipline. However, many tutorials teach the skills and concepts, but alienate the applications and usefulness. We have produced a Field Guide to Programming, a tutorial that uses the discrete time population growth model as a concrete example to introduce and explain programming concepts. We equate our Field Guide to the beginning chapters of any naturalist's field guide, where the use of the guide is explained. This Field Guide covers a range of topics from simple mathematical expressions and assigning variables to functions and solvers for ordinary …

Can Anyone With Low Income Be Food Secure?: Mitigating Food Insecurity Among Low Income Households With Children In The Tampa Bay Area, Edgar Allan Amador Jul 2014

Can Anyone With Low Income Be Food Secure?: Mitigating Food Insecurity Among Low Income Households With Children In The Tampa Bay Area, Edgar Allan Amador

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the US over the last few years, approximately 14.5% of households experience food insecurity at some point throughout the year. While studies on food insecurity in the US have determined that household income and specifically income available to spend on food is of critical importance to food security, it is still unclear why some households with low income are able to maintain food security while others experience food insecurity in a pattern characterized as not constant but recurrent. This dissertation compares households with children at different levels of food security and insecurity using the USDA Core Food Security Module …

New Isotopic Methods To Better Understand The Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Net Ecosystem Calcification And Coral Calcification Rates In Bermuda, Alyson M. Venti Jul 2014

New Isotopic Methods To Better Understand The Effects Of Ocean Acidification On Net Ecosystem Calcification And Coral Calcification Rates In Bermuda, Alyson M. Venti

Open Access Dissertations

The health and future of coral and coral reef ecosystems remains threatened by global climate change (GCC) and ocean acidification (OA). There is a need to better understand the current health of coral reef ecosystems, particularly those in threshold environments which will likely be affected first by pressures from GCC and OA. This need can be addressed by answering two critical questions: 1) what are the current net ecosystem calcification (NEC) rates in threshold environments? And 2) what physical, biological or chemical parameter is/are driving these calcification rates? Bermuda, located at the northern threshold to support tropical coral reefs, provides …
