International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Efforts to better understand the components of catchments’ water balance have traditionally been one of the objectives of the hydrological community. Very few hydrological models incorporate vegetation development as state variable. This is beginning to change with the recognition by the hydrological community that biological processes play a key role in catchment’s water balance. In addition, some studies confirm that vegetation density controls most of hydrological processes in semi-arid regions. However, the most of the dynamic vegetation models are too complex to be coupled with hydrological models and they incorporate variables and inputs which are difficult to be estimated across …

A New Alarm Generation Concept For Water Distribution Networks Based On Machine Learning Algorithms, Christian Kühnert, Thomas Bernard, Idel Montalvo Arango, Reik Nitsche
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) are critical infrastructures that are exposed to deliberate or accidental chemical, biological or radioactive contamination. A monitoring system capable of protecting a WDN against contamination events in real time is a big challenge needed to be accomplished. Powerful online sensor systems are currently developed and the prototypes are able to detect a small change in water quality. Consequently, the main objective of the project SMaRT-OnlineWDN is the development of an online security management toolkit for WDNs that is based on sensor measurements of water quality as well as water quantity. A new approach for the fast …

Accurate Prediction Of Ecological Quality Ratio With Product Unit Neural Networks, Arie De Niet, Erwin Meijers, Sebastiaan Schep
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This paper shows how to use product unit neural networks (punn's) to derive a data-driven model for the prediction of ecological quality in surface water. In a comparison with other approaches the punns provide by far the best prediction. Moreover they reveal the underlying relations between characteristics and ecological quality. Encouraged by the European Water Framework Directive many measures are taken by Dutch government to improve water quality en ecological quality of surface water. Although it is well known which type of measures are most effective in what cases, it is uncertain what the total effect of a measure is. …

Assessing Rehabilitation Strategies Of Urban Drainage Systems Based On Future Scenarios Of Urbanization, Arlex Sanchez-Torres, Zoran Vojinović, Roland K. Price
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Population growth and urbanisation are creating a big need to improve the planning processes and management of urban infrastructures. Urban drainage networks are one of the vital services needed for any urban area, modelling its growth and expansion is a challenge because of the dynamics of the system. This work describes the integration of a cellular automata model, to simulate urban land use changes, with algorithms to deduct the future layout of the drainage network and with SWMM 5.0 as the hydraulic engine to assess the performance of the drainage systems in the current condition and in the future. The …

The Benthic Geoecology Model Within The Modular System For Shelves And Coasts (Mossco), Mohammad Hassan Nasermoaddeli, Carsten Lemmen, Richard Hofmeister, Frank Koesters, Knut Klingbeil
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The Modular System for Shelves and Coasts (MOSSCO) integrates physical, biological, chemical and geological models of shelves and coasts for the North Sea and Baltic Sea in an exchangeable way. The MOSSCO software forms a coupling framework for exchanging data and models, which distinguishes between physical domains (Earth System compartments such as the benthic and pelagic zone) and processes (such as benthic geochemistry, physical erosion and biological stabilization). Information exchange across physical domains with different grids and time steps are managed using the ESMF (Earth System Modelling Framework), whereas coupling of processes within individual modules is achieved using FABM (Framework …

Stochastic Assessment Of Environmental Flows In Semiarid Environments, Cristina Aguilar, Marta Egüen, Jose María Perales, Miguel A. Losada, María José Polo
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The regimen of environmental flows (EF) must be included as terms of environmental demand in the management of water resources. Even though there are numerous methods for the computation of EF, the criteria applied at different steps in the calculation process are quite subjective whereas the results are fixed values that must be meet by water planners. This study presents a friendly-user tool for the assessment of the probability of compliance of a certain EF scenario with the natural regimen in a semiarid area in southern Spain. 250 replications of a 25-yr period of different hydrological variables (rainfall, minimum and …

The Potential Of Kohonen Method For Classifying Rivers Focused On Regional Environmental Flow Determination With Eloha, Federico Gonzalez Cuellar, Nelson Obregon Neira
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
This article highlights the potential benefits that the Kohonen method has for the classification of rivers with similar characteristics by determining regional ecological flows using the ELOHA (Ecological Limits of Hydrologic Alteration) methodology. Currently, there are many methodologies for the classification of rivers, however none of them include the characteristics found in Kohonen method such as (i) providing the number of groups that actually underlie the information presented, (ii) used to make variable importance analysis, (iii) which in any case can display two-dimensional classification process, and (iv) that regardless of the parameters used in the model the clustering structure remains. …

Does Hyporheic Intensity Explain Spawning Site Selection?, Rohan Benjankar, Daniele Tonina, Jim Mckean, Daniel J. Isaak
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Pool, riffle and runs are streambed features and important habitats for aquatic species. It is well-known that salmonid species utilize these streambed features as spawning site. Pools are characterized by deep water depth, low velocity and gentle water surface slope, whereas riffles are characterized by shallow depth, high velocity and steep slope. Past studies have used hydrodynamic model simulated hydraulic characteristics such as depth, velocity and shear stress to delineate these features. However, the magnitude of these hydraulic characteristics may vary significantly with the discharge and longitudinal slope of the stream. Additionally, these indexes still do not entirely explain the …

Considering The Effect Of Uncertainty And Variability In The Synthetic Generation Of Influent Wastewater Time Series, Mansour Talebizadehsardari, Evangelia Belia, Peter A. Vanrolleghem
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The availability of influent wastewater time series is crucial for assessing the performance of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) under dynamic flow and loading conditions. Given the difficulty of collecting sufficient data, synthetic generation may be the only option. Usually, the main constituents of the influent time series (e.g. flow, COD, TSS, TKN) show periodic, auto-correlation, and cross-correlation structures in time. Therefore researchers have used statistical models (e.g. auto-regressive time series models) for random generation of the influent time series. However, these regular patterns in time could be significantly distorted during rain events (wet weather flow (WWF) conditions) in which …

Response Of River Hydrological And Habitat Features To Water Supplement By Upstream Dam In Lijiang River, China, Ruonan Li, Qiuwen Chen, Duan Chen, Rui Han
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
River development has impact on river hydrology instantly, and then produces far-reaching influence on river ecology gradually. Research on hydrological and ecological response to river environmental variation has caught much attention for river sustainable exploitation. This research, takingLijiangRiveras a case, developed a river habitat model integrated with water environmental model, which used to analyze the relations of hydrological and habitat features to flow regime variation due to upstream reservoir operation. This paper analyzed the hydraulic and water quality variation under two different flow schemes, and assessed habitat evolution before and after implementation of water supplement project. Finally, the optimum objective …
Extending Occoquan Reservoir Water Quality Model For Stakeholder Involvement, Saurav Kumar, Adil Godrej, Thomas Grizzard
Extending Occoquan Reservoir Water Quality Model For Stakeholder Involvement, Saurav Kumar, Adil Godrej, Thomas Grizzard
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
There has been a paradigm change in water resource management as control of major point sources has improved, and recognition has grown of the importance of diffused pollution. Newer approaches, exemplified by watershed-scale management, emphasize stakeholder involvement to achieve better decision making through negotiation and compromise; and ultimately, better acceptance of final management solutions. Stakeholder participatory involvement in using complex water quality models to understand management scenarios and their impacts is, however, limited. Advanced receiving waterbody and watershed WQ models are complicated and require significant technical expertise in their understanding and use, which is a deterrent to non-expert stakeholder involvement. …
Predicting Iron And Manganese Accumulation Potential In Water Distribution Networks Using Artificial Neural Network, Prasad Devi Tumula, Ebenezer Danso-Amoako
Predicting Iron And Manganese Accumulation Potential In Water Distribution Networks Using Artificial Neural Network, Prasad Devi Tumula, Ebenezer Danso-Amoako
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
In April 2010 the Water Services Regulation Authority in England and Wales, OFWAT, introduced the Service Incentive Mechanism (SIM) which rates water companies on their performance based on customer satisfaction and either reward or penalise them. In view of this, it has become extremely important for water companies to lower customer complaints due to drinking water discolouration; which is approximately 34% of all customer complaints. Presently, most water companies identify high discolouration risk regions in water distribution networks (WDNs) by selecting areas in the network with high Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) concentrations from their random sampling. With about 315,000 …

An Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (Epr) Model For Prediction Of H2s Induced Corrosion In Concrete Sewer Pipes, Anna Romanova, Asaad Faramarzi, Mojtaba Mahmoodian, M. Amir Alani
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The sulphuric acid is a known growing threat to concrete sewer pipes. Acid production is dictated by rapid urbanisation, increased use of hot water and discharge of toxic metals and sulphate containing detergents into the wastewater. Concrete sewer pipe corrosion due to sulphuric attack is known to be the main contributory factor of pipe degradation. Very little tools are available to accurately predict the corrosion rate and most importantly the remaining safe life of the asset. This paper proposes a new robust model to predict the sewer pipe corrosion rate due to sulphuric acid. The model makes use of a …
Antimicrobial Nanoparticles: A Green And Novel Approach For Enhancing Bactericidal Efficacy Of Commercial Antibiotics, Monic Shah
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
On the verge of entering the post-antibiotic era, numerous efforts are in place to regain the waning charm of antibiotics which are proving ineffective against most “Superbugs”. Engineered nanomaterials, especially gold nanoparticles (GNPs) capped with antibacterial agents, are proving to be an effective and novel strategy against multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. In this study, we report a one-step synthesis of antibioticcapped GNPs (25 ± 5 nm) utilizing the combined reducing and capping ability of a cephalosporin antibiotic, ceftazidime. No signs of aggregation or leaching of ceftazidime from GNP surface was observed upon its storage. Antibacterial testing showed dosedependent broad spectrum …

Melanin As An Oto-Protective Pigment In Two Fish Species: Poecilia Latipinna And Cyprinus Carpio , Bethany N. Coffey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Melanin is the dark pigment found in most organisms that gives color to the skin, hair, feathers, and eyes of vertebrates. While melanin is known to also be present in the stria vascularis of the mammalian cochlea, its function in the inner ear is still unknown. Some previous studies have indicated that melanin may serve to protect the mammalian ear from hearing loss. Minimal previous research on melanin within the inner ears of fishes has been conducted. In this study, the melanin levels in the inner ears of different color morphs of two fish species (Poecilia latipinna and Cyprinus …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Regulatory Stormwater Monitoring Protocols On Groundwater Quality In Urbanized Karst Regions, Daniel C. Nedvidek
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Regulatory Stormwater Monitoring Protocols On Groundwater Quality In Urbanized Karst Regions, Daniel C. Nedvidek
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Non-point pollution from stormwater runoff is one of the greatest threats to water quality in the United States today, particularly in urban karst settings. In these settings, the use of karst features and injection wells for stormwater management results in virtually untreated water being directed into the karst aquifer. Currently, no policies exist specifically to provide water quality protections to karst environments. This study utilized a combination of karst stormwater quality data, along with survey data collected from MS4 Phase II communities, and an analysis of current federal, local, and state water quality regulations, to assess the need for karst-specific …

Examining Group Differences Between Suicidal Veterans Classified As Wish To Live, Ambivalent, Or Wish To Die Using The Suicide Index Score, Brittany D. Morris
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
A persistent difficulty in the field of psychology is identifying which individuals are at the greatest risk for suicide. Veterans of the US Military are at elevated risk for suicide as compared to the general population. One approach for designating tiers of risk is applying the “Suicide Index Score” to discriminate individuals based upon their reported wish to live (WTL) and wish to die (WTD; Kovacs & Beck, 1977). Brown, Steer, Henriques, and Beck (2005) demonstrated those who indicated a complete WTD and no WTL were at greatest risk to die. The current study expanded on previous research by using …

Study On Water Age In An Estuary Using Three-Dimensional Models, Yuheng Ren, Binliang Lin, Jian Sun
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The age of water (AW) concept is applied in the Pearl River Estuary to investigate the water exchange process in three-dimensional space and its seasonal variation. A three-dimensional AW model is built based on the advanced hydrodynamic model MIKE3, and the model has been verified against a field survey dataset in the Pearl River Estuary. Using this model, the spatio-temporal distributions of water age are numerically determined in response to hydrodynamic factors. The predictions indicate that the mean AW values inside the Pearl River Estuary during the wet season and the dry season are approximately 10 days and 25 days, …

Development And Testing Of Data Driven Nowcasting Models Of Beach Water Quality, Jainy Mavani, Lianghao Chen, Darko Joksimovic, Songnian Li
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Beach water issues are gaining worldwide attention due to their impact on health and other environmental problems. The Ontario beaches require beach managers to issue swimming advisories when water quality standards are exceeded since users of recreational waters may be exposed to elevated pathogen levels through various point and non-point sources. Typical daily notifications rely on microbial analysis of indicator organisms (e.g. Escherichia coli), which require 18-24 hours to provide an adequate response. This research evaluated the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR) for real time prediction of E.coli in the beach waters of Toronto …

Dynamic Condition Approach To Study The Self-Purification Capacity Of Colombian Water Bodies Case: Cauca River And Salvajina Dam, Alberto Galvis, Isabel Cristina Hurtado, Carlos Martínez-Cano, Juan Gabriel Urrego
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
The impact on water resources caused by municipal wastewater discharge has become a critical and ever-growing environmental and public health problem. In order to be able to efficiently address this problem, it is important to adopt an integrated approach that includes a decrease in and control of contamination at its source. These principles have been successfully applied in the industrial sector and now these concepts are also being applied to integrated water resources management. In this context the conceptual model of the Three Steps Strategic Approach (3-SSA) was developed, consisting of: 1) minimization and prevention, 2) treatment for reuse and …
Developing An Integrated Modelling System For Blue-Green Solutions, Christos Makropoulos, Evangelos Rozos, Cedo Maksimovic
Developing An Integrated Modelling System For Blue-Green Solutions, Christos Makropoulos, Evangelos Rozos, Cedo Maksimovic
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Blue-green interventions represent the next level of integration for sustainable cities: that of an integrated urban water and urban green design, operation and management. The key concept is that a more holistic approach would present a win-win scenario, in which urban green would be utilized as infrastructure for water services (e.g. mitigating urban floods) while urban water infrastructure would be used as a source of irrigation for urban green, increasing their performance in a range of services including amenities, reducing heat island effects and increasing ecosystem services. However, this focus on integration brings into sharp relief another need: that of …

Lake George is located about 80 km north of Albany in upstate New York and is known internationally for its water clarity. Understanding the hydrodynamics of the lake is fundamental for creation and maintenance of a research and monitoring program for the early detection of and response to adverse environmental and biological change. In this work a 3D circulation model of the lake …
Application Of Real-Time Control Strategy To Improve Nitrogen Removal In Wastewater Treatment, Qibin Wang, Qiuwen Chen, Jinfeng Ma, Qiang Xu
Application Of Real-Time Control Strategy To Improve Nitrogen Removal In Wastewater Treatment, Qibin Wang, Qiuwen Chen, Jinfeng Ma, Qiang Xu
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Biological nitrogen removal is an important task in the wastewater treatment. However, the actual removal of total nitrogen (TN) in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is often unsatisfactory due to several causes, one of which is the insufficient availability of carbon source. One possible approach to improve the nitrogen removal therefore is addition of external carbon source, while the amount of which is directly related to operation cost of a WWTP. It is obviously necessary to determine the accurate amount of addition of external carbon source according to the demand depending on the influent wastewater quality. This study focused on …
A Harmonized Vocabulary For Water Quality, Simon J.D. Cox, Bruce A. Simons, Jonathan Yu
A Harmonized Vocabulary For Water Quality, Simon J.D. Cox, Bruce A. Simons, Jonathan Yu
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Interoperability of water quality data depends on the use of common models, schemas and vocabularies. However, terms are usually collected during different activities and projects in isolation of one another, resulting in vocabularies that have the same scope being represented with different terms, using different formats and formalisms, and published in various access methods. Significantly, most water quality vocabularies conflate multiple concepts in a single term, e.g. quantity kind, units of measure, substance or taxon, medium and procedure. This bundles information associated with separate elements from the OGC Observations and Measurements (O&M) model into a single slot. We have developed …

In-Situ Algae Control Using Water-Lifting Aerators In A Eutrophicated Source Water Reservoir, Xin Sun, Xue Wang, Tinglin Huang, Haibing Cong
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
Algal pollution is a common water quality problem in many source water reservoirs worldwide and directly threatens the safety of drinking water. Water-lifting aeration has been recently developed to improve the source water quality and to control the excessive algae growth by transporting algae from the surface water to the bottom water of the reservoir. Taking the Shibianyu Reservoir supplying 20% source water to Xi’an, China, as a study case, the effect of in-situ algae control using water-lifting aerators was numerically investigated with Fluent. Two submerged water-lifting aerators with different circulation flow rates were installed with different local water depths …
Propagation Characteristics Of Density Currents And Implications To Pollutant Transport In A Stratified Reservoir, Xin Sun, Yan Xu, Tinglin Huang, Xiao Tang
Propagation Characteristics Of Density Currents And Implications To Pollutant Transport In A Stratified Reservoir, Xin Sun, Yan Xu, Tinglin Huang, Xiao Tang
International Conference on Hydroinformatics
With global warming, the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events were predicted to change more dramatically in the near future while the amount of total precipitation will change slightly. Large volume of turbid inflow will enter the source water reservoir after a heavy rainfall, and evolve in various types of density currents depending on the density difference between the inflow and background water. Density currents play an important role in the thermal structure and pollutant transport in the reservoir. Understanding the behaviors of density current is fundamental to study the changes of source water quality during the flooding season. …
