Negative political advertising has become commonplace for one simple reason it works Cognitive pyschologists attribute this to a phenomenon they call the brain's ÔÇ£negativity biasÔÇØ That is our brains are more apt to process and retain negative information as opposed to positive information As one neuropsychologist has put it ÔÇ£your brain is like Velcro for negative experiences and Teflon for positive onesÔÇØCognitive psychologists have concluded that bad stimuli have significantly more power across a broad range of psychological phenomena What are the implications of this finding for legal writing For example how do judges respond to negative themes in briefs …
Asperger's Disorder In Older Adulthood: The Unique Treatment Concerns And Implications For Applying Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Brian Beaumund
Asperger's Disorder In Older Adulthood: The Unique Treatment Concerns And Implications For Applying Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Brian Beaumund
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
This article provides a theoretical consideration for the problems faced by older adults diagnosed with Asperger’s Disorder as well as implications for applying Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with this distinct population. The author presents the relevant literature concerning the unique presentation and common problems of each, traditionally distinct population: (a) older adults and (b) Asperger’s Disorder. The author then extrapolates this data into a theoretical conceptualization of the unique clinical presentation and treatment considerations for the underrepresented population of older adults with Asperger’s Disorder. The author then presents a review of the relevant literature concerning the application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy …

Racial Disparities In Access To Community Water Supply Service In Wake County, North Carolina, Jacqueline Macdonald Gibson, Nicholas Defelice, Daniel Sebastian, Hannah Leker
Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research
Anecdotal evidence suggests that historically African American communities on the fringes of cities and towns in North Carolina have been systematically denied access to municipal drinking water service. This paper presents the first statistical analysis of the role of race in determining water access in these fringe areas, known as extraterritorial jurisdictions. Using publicly available property tax data, we quantified the percentage of residences with municipal water service in each census block in Wake County (the second-largest by population in North Carolina). Using the resulting water service maps plus 2010 U.S. Census data, we employed a logistic regression to assess …
The Role Of Metallothionein And Zinc Signaling In Cd4+ T Cell Activation And Differentiation, James M. Rice
The Role Of Metallothionein And Zinc Signaling In Cd4+ T Cell Activation And Differentiation, James M. Rice
Doctoral Dissertations
Metallothioneins (MTs) are small-molecular weight, high cysteine content proteins that bind and release zinc ions in response to redox signaling and oxidative stress. Although the precise cellular functions of MTs remain elusive, their upregulation in CD4+ T cells following activation and during inflammation implicates their role in modulating immune responses. To understand the role of MT in CD4+ T cells, MT expression and [Zn2+] were characterized under different cytokine environments during primary and secondary activation. Increased MT expression correlates with a higher intracellular [Zn2+] following activation, suggesting a potential mechanism of increased MT expression …

The Psychological Well-Being Of Divorced Fathers: A Theoretical Model And Projection, Todd Lawrence Bottom
The Psychological Well-Being Of Divorced Fathers: A Theoretical Model And Projection, Todd Lawrence Bottom
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. divorce rate increased substantially from WWII until the 1980's. Although the number of divorces decreased marginally in the past decade, the number of marriages also decreased, causing the divorce rate to remain nearly unchanged from 2000 to 2010. The most frequently cited negative effect of divorce and separation is perhaps the loss of father-child contact, although little research was dedicated to understanding the post-divorce outcomes of fathers - especially with regard to their long-term outcomes. The present study assessed how several factors (e.g. parenting decisions, custody status, parenting efficacy, and parenting encouragement) influenced divorced fathers' psychological well-being. Results …

Examining The Pathway From Maternal Criminal Involvement To Adolescent Delinquency, Dina Chavira
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
As incarceration rates across the United States have continued to rise, there has been growing concern with the unintended consequences that have resulted. This has prompted researchers across multiple disciplines to study the effects of incarceration at the individual, family, community, and societal levels. An important but overlooked factor pertains to extensive multiple social service agency involvement and missed opportunities for intervention. Families involved with the criminal justice system (CJS) are often at risk of involvement with other human service agencies, one agency being the child welfare system (CWS). Little is known about families who fall within these two systems, …

Translation Initiation Rate Determines The Impact Of Ribosome Stalling On Bacterial Protein Synthesis, Steven J. Hersch, Sara Elgamal, Assaf Katz, Michael Ibba, William Wiley Navarre
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Ribosome stalling during translation can be caused by a number of characterized mechanisms. However, the impact of elongation stalls on protein levels is variable, and the reasons for this are often unclear. To investigate this relationship, we examined the bacterial translation elongation factor P (EF-P), which plays a critical role in rescuing ribosomes stalled at specific amino acid sequences including polyproline motifs. In previous proteomic analyses of both Salmonella and Escherichia coli efp mutants, it was evident that not all proteins containing a polyproline motif were dependent on EF-P for efficient expression in vivo . The α- and β-subunits of …
Tnf-Α And Mechanical Stretch: Synergistic Damage To Alveolar Epithelial Cells, Corey Garrett Holt
Tnf-Α And Mechanical Stretch: Synergistic Damage To Alveolar Epithelial Cells, Corey Garrett Holt

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is difficult to treat and has a mortalitly rate of 40-60%. During ARDS, cytokine levels in the lungs are elevated and patients are treated with hyperoxia and mechanical ventilaion. Alone, these three factors can cause lung injury but the combination is thought to worsen lung damage. Using an over-distension model of lung injury, I investigated the effect of excessive mechanical stretch on a monolayer of murine alveolar epithelial cells (MLE-12) treated with the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Results show that monolayer damage, i.e., formation of cell-free areas, may begin as early as 30 …

Post-Transplant High-Dose Cyclophosphamide For The Prevention Of Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Ahmad Samer Al-Homsi, Tara S. Roy, Kelli Cole, Benjamin Feng, Ulrich Duffner
Peer Reviewed Articles
Cyclophosphamide's lack of hematopoietic stem cell toxicity and its unique effects on the immune system have prompted several investigators to explore its potential for the prevention of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). In haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplants, post-transplant cyclophosphamide together with standard prophylaxis reduces the incidence of GVHD to acceptable rates without the need for T cell depletion. In matched related and unrelated donor settings, cyclophosphamide alone has produced encouraging results. In particular, the low incidence of chronic GVHD is noteworthy. Here, we present a review of the current understanding of the mechanism of action of post-transplant cyclophosphamide and summarize the …

Background: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast is a precursor of invasive breast carcinoma. DNA methylation alterations are thought to be an early event in progression of cancer, and may prove valuable as a tool in clinical decision making and for understanding neoplastic development. Results: We generate genome-wide DNA methylation profiles of 285 breast tissue samples representing progression of cancer, and validate methylation changes between normal and DCIS in an independent dataset of 15 normal and 40 DCIS samples. We also validate a prognostic signature on 583 breast cancer samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas. Our analysis reveals …
Transplantation Of Neurospheres Derived From Genetically Modified Adult Bone Marrow Stromal Cells Following A Controlled Cortical Impact (Cci): Effects On Transplant Survival And Behavioral Recovery, Austin M. Favory
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects thousands of individuals annually who have limited options for treatment. The use of mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow (BMSC) has therapeutic potential, free from ethical ramifications. Previous transplant studies have grafted naive BMSCs into injured brain tissue or infused them intraventricularly (i.v.) with varying results (Bonilla 2012, Osani 2012, Bakhitany 2010, Li 2009).. In this study, we transplanted Notch-induced rat BMSCs (BMSC-NICD) with properties of neuroprogenitor-like cells, into the rat controlled cortical impact (CCI) model of TBI. Adult rat BMSC were harvested from femur and tibia of adult Fischer 344 rats. These cells …
Sexy But Not Sexual: An Examination Of The Sexual Narratives Of African American Adolescent Females, April Timmons
Sexy But Not Sexual: An Examination Of The Sexual Narratives Of African American Adolescent Females, April Timmons
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Much of the research on sexuality during adolescence has focused on the potential negative sequelae of adolescent sexual behavior such as STI acquisition or teenage pregnancy. Researchers have begun to advocate for examining adolescent sexuality as a normative aspect of adolescent development. One aspect of this examination would be to form a more complete understanding of how adolescents develop their sexual identity – their conceptualization of themselves as a sexual being. Erickson’s (1968) identity development theory asserts that identity is developed internally and shaped by the social environment.
Development of a healthy sexual identity may be particularly difficult for African …
Examination Of Herpesvirus Entry Glycoprotein Interactions Using Proximity Biotinylation, Michelle Lajko
Examination Of Herpesvirus Entry Glycoprotein Interactions Using Proximity Biotinylation, Michelle Lajko
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Herpesvirus entry into cells begins when viral membrane glycoproteins bind to cellular receptors. This receptor binding elicits a cascade of interactions among conserved viral membrane glycoproteins that triggers virus-cell membrane fusion. Details of the viral protein interactions are not well understood because they are likely transient and/or low affinity. Proximity biotinylation (ProB) is a promising technique for dissecting the glycoprotein interactions required for entry. In ProB, one protein is linked to a bacterial biotin ligase and a second protein is linked to a target 15 amino acid acceptor peptide (AP). If the proteins interact, the ligase on the first protein …
The Effect Of Cyclophilin A On Vaccinia Virus Replication In Vitro, Kathryn Korhonen
The Effect Of Cyclophilin A On Vaccinia Virus Replication In Vitro, Kathryn Korhonen
Master's Theses
The host protein cyclophilin A (CypA) has been shown to be necessary for viral replication of several viruses, including human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus. Previous research done in the Geary laboratory, in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, reported that cyclophilin A remains highly associated with vaccinia virus virions even after successive rounds of purification. The goal of this research is to further investigate how cyclophilin A affects vaccinia virus replication in vitro using primary tissues harvested from CypA (-/-) knockout mice to determine the difference in viral growth kinetics. Results showed different viral growth kinetics in …
Reduction Of Obesity-Associated Oxidative Stress By Low-Fat Yogurt Consumption, Diana M. Dimarco
Reduction Of Obesity-Associated Oxidative Stress By Low-Fat Yogurt Consumption, Diana M. Dimarco
Master's Theses
Excess macronutrient intake leads to an increase in formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This causes an imbalance between ROS generation and the ability of the body to neutralize these radicals, a state known as oxidative stress. Previous research suggests the ability of dairy products to attenuate the postprandial response, which may reduce ROS formation. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the impact of low-fat yogurt consumption on fasting and postprandial oxidative stress in obese women.
We hypothesized that co-consumption of low-fat yogurt and a high-calorie, high-fat meal would reduce postprandial elevations in oxidative stress in obese women. To test …
An Insight To Psychological Health, Health Behaviors, And Bodyweight Among Correctional Employees, Christina Mignano
An Insight To Psychological Health, Health Behaviors, And Bodyweight Among Correctional Employees, Christina Mignano
Master's Theses
Background: Correctional employees present a poor physical and mental health profile including high rates of overweight/obesity, poor health behaviors (diet, exercise, and sleep quality), high stress levels, and poor psychological health (e.g. high rates of depression, suicide, and divorce). Worse, correctional employees deny their stress and negative emotions as their occupational culture discourages expressing negative characteristics that would make one appear weak and deters seeking psychiatric help. Correctional employees are in need of effective health promotion efforts that address determinants of employee health with an all-inclusive view (mental/emotional/behavioral). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess if stress and/or …
The Effect Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy On Strengthening The Attachment Relationship With Foster Parents And Children In Foster Care, Christina Marie Danko
The Effect Of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy On Strengthening The Attachment Relationship With Foster Parents And Children In Foster Care, Christina Marie Danko
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Children in foster care are more likely to face difficulties in forming a secure attachment relationship and to have problem behaviors than children not in foster care (Dozier & Rutter, 2008). Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment that focuses on strengthening the attachment relationship between the child and the caregiver, as well as reducing the number and intensity of behavior problems. Although PCIT is based on attachment theory, very few studies have examined the effect of PCIT on child-parent attachment or examined the effect of PCIT on attachment in foster care families. This study extends prior work and …
Roles Of Retinoic Acid And Cyp26 Inhibitors In Ovarian Follicle Development, Shruti M. Kamath
Roles Of Retinoic Acid And Cyp26 Inhibitors In Ovarian Follicle Development, Shruti M. Kamath
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The ovaries are the female reproductive organs that are located on either side of the uterus. They contain eggs and secrete hormones that are critical for female reproduction. Each follicle consists of an egg at the center, surrounded by multiple layers of somatic cells. These eggs undergo various stages of development wherein the follicular structure matures as a whole; the hormones and growth factors secreted by the somatic cells are essential for the maturation of the egg while the signaling molecules produced by the egg are crucial for somatic cell proliferation and follicle maturation and development.
Thus, mammalian ovarian follicle …
Proximal Aberrant Crypt Foci As A Surrogate Marker Of Colorectal Cancer Risk, David Alden Drew
Proximal Aberrant Crypt Foci As A Surrogate Marker Of Colorectal Cancer Risk, David Alden Drew
Doctoral Dissertations
Colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention using screening colonoscopy relies upon the identification and removal of precancerous polyps or adenomas. Recently, an increase in CRC cases has been observed in individuals who have undergone screening colonoscopy before their next prescribed screening or surveillance interval, underscoring inherent limitations of routine colonoscopy as a complete preventive measure. Increasing evidence suggests that these “interval cancers” are most likely the product of missed or overlooked precancerous lesions. Specifically, interval cancers have a predilection for the proximal colon and their molecular features are associated with serrated polyps, lesions that due to their endoscopic morphology are difficult to …
