Estimates Of Micro-, Nano-, And Picoplankton Contributions To Particle Export In The Northeast Pacific, B. L. Mackinson, S. Bradley Moran, M. W. Lomas, G. M. Stewart, R. P. Kelly

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The contributions of micro-, nano-, and picoplankton to particle export were estimated from measurements of size-fractionated particulate 234Th, organic carbon, and phytoplankton indicator pigments obtained during five cruises between 2010 and 2012 along Line P in the subarctic northeast Pacific Ocean. Sinking fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC) and indicator pigments were calculated from 234Th–238U disequilibria and, during two cruises, measured by sediment trap at Ocean Station Papa. POC fluxes at 100 m ranged from 0.65–7.95 mmol m−2 d−1, similar in magnitude to previous results at Line P. Microplankton pigments dominate indicator pigment …

Function Of The Insect Olfactory Receptor Co-Receptor Subunit And Its Interactions With Odorant-Binding Subunits, Sisi Chen Aug 2014

Function Of The Insect Olfactory Receptor Co-Receptor Subunit And Its Interactions With Odorant-Binding Subunits, Sisi Chen

Open Access Dissertations

Human health is threatened by insect borne diseases, such as dengue fever, malaria, yellow fever and epidemic typhus. Insects can also cause significant destruction of crops and food stores. Insects depend on olfaction to perceive their surroundings and guide activities; including feeding, mating and oviposition. Understanding the molecular structure and biological activities of insect odorant receptors (ORs) is paramount to developing novel and highly effective insect repellants. Each insect olfactory receptor is composed of two functionally essential parts: a highly conserved co-receptor subunit (Orco) and one of a large number of variable odorant-binding (or “tuning”) subunits. These subunits associate in …

Origin And Evolution Of European Community-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Marc Stegger, Thierry Wirth, Paal S. Andersen, Robert L. Skov, Anna De Grassi, Lance B. Price, +23 Additional Authors

Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) was recognized in Europe and worldwide in the late 1990s. Within a decade, several genetically and geographically distinct CA-MRSA lineages carrying the small SCCmec type IV and V genetic elements and the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) emerged around the world. In Europe, the predominant CA-MRSA strain belongs to clonal complex 80 (CC80) and is resistant to kanamycin/amikacin and fusidic acid. CC80 was first reported in 1993 but was relatively rare until the late 1990s. It has since been identified throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, with recent sporadic reports in sub-Saharan Africa. While …

Peer Reviewed Articles

Binge eating afflicts approximately 5% of US adults, though effective treatments are limited. Here, we showed that estrogen replacement substantially suppresses binge-like eating behavior in ovariectomized female mice. Estrogen-dependent inhibition of binge-like eating was blocked in female mice specifically lacking estrogen receptor-α (ERα) in serotonin (5-HT) neurons in the dorsal raphe nuclei (DRN). Administration of a recently developed glucagon-like peptide-1–estrogen (GLP-1–estrogen) conjugate designed to deliver estrogen to GLP1 receptor–enhanced regions effectively targeted bioactive estrogens to the DRN and substantially suppressed binge-like eating in ovariectomized female mice. Administration of GLP-1 alone reduced binge-like eating, but not to the same extent as …

Enzymatic Oxidation Of Cholesterol: Properties And Functional Effects Of Cholestenone In Cell Membranes, Maarit Neuvonen, Moutusi Manna, Sini Mokkila, Matti Javanainen, Tomasz Rog, Zheng Liu, Robert Bittman, Ilpo Vattulainen, Elina Ikonen

Publications and Research

Bacterial cholesterol oxidase is commonly used as an experimental tool to reduce cellular cholesterol content. That the treatment also generates the poorly degradable metabolite 4-cholesten-3-one (cholestenone) has received less attention. Here, we investigated the membrane partitioning of cholestenone using simulations and cell biological experiments and assessed the functional effects of cholestenone in human cells. Atomistic simulations predicted that cholestenone reduces membrane order, undergoes faster flip-flop and desorbs more readily from membranes than cholesterol. In primary human fibroblasts, cholestenone was released from membranes to physiological extracellular acceptors more avidly than cholesterol, but without acceptors it remained in cells over a day. …

Three young northern temperate forest communities in the north-central United States were exposed to factorial combinations of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and tropospheric ozone (O3) for 11 years. Here, we report results from an extensive sampling of plant biomass and soil conducted at the conclusion of the experiment that enabled us to estimate ecosystem carbon (C) content and cumulative net primary productivity (NPP). Elevated CO2 enhanced ecosystem C content by 11%, whereas elevated O3 decreased ecosystem C content by 9%. There was little variation in treatment effects on C content across communities and no meaningful interactions between CO2 and O3. …

The Impact Of Foreign Postings On Accompanying Military Spouses: An Ethnographic Study, Gillian Blakely, Catherine Hennessy, Man C. Chung, Heather Skirton

All Works

As part of an ethnographic study, the impact of foreign postings on spouses who accompany military personnel was explored. Individual interviews and focus groups with 34 British military spouses based in one location in southern Europe were conducted. Key findings suggested that reaction to a foreign posting was a reflection of personal attitudes, prior experiences, support, ability to adjust to change and strength of relationship with the serving spouse and community. For many the experience was positive due to the increased opportunity for family time, for others this helped to compensate for the difficulties experienced. Some military spouses experienced significant …

Search For The Causative Organism Of Waterfowl Deaths At Lake Onalaska, Derek Skillings Aug 2014

Search For The Causative Organism Of Waterfowl Deaths At Lake Onalaska, Derek Skillings

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

American coots (Fulica americana) and diving ducks, including lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) and ring-necked ducks (Aythya collaris) have been dying in significant numbers on Lake Onalaska since 2001. Bird mortality is being attributed to parasitic infections from two intestinal trematodes, Cyathocotyle bushiensis and Sphaeridiotrema globulus. The birds begin dying in as little as two weeks of landing at this lake. Rapid mortality is not typically associated with trematode parasitism. Assuming these birds acquired their infections at Lake Onalaska, leads to the conclusion that our current understanding of the disease in this parasite-host system is lacking. Neorickettsiales are a group of …

Risk Factors Of Suicidal Phenomenon: Prevention And Intervention, Lisa M. Meyer Aug 2014

Risk Factors Of Suicidal Phenomenon: Prevention And Intervention, Lisa M. Meyer

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Around the world suicide has caused more deaths per year than homicide or war (World Health Organization, 2002). Suicidal attempts (the person survives) and suicidal ideation (thinking seriously about suicide) are others dimensions of the suicide phenomenon. A number of risk factors have been considered as factors contributing to the increased likelihood of suicidal ideation, attempts, and completions. Sociological (external) factors and psychological (internal) factors have been considered in increasing suicidal risk. Beyond the individual factors research has also explained the family, social, and community aspects of the suicidal phenomenon. Helping professionals planning suicide intervention and prevention strategies need to …

Identification Of Soybean Lipoxygenase Products By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Ge-Ms), Rehan Ahmad Malik Aug 2014

Identification Of Soybean Lipoxygenase Products By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (Ge-Ms), Rehan Ahmad Malik

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are enzymes which catalyze peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids containing at least one cis, cis 1, 4-pentadiene moiety to form conjugated diene-hydroperoxides. Soybean seeds contain three LOX isoenzymes while at least five different isoenzymes are in the vegetative tissue. Lipoxygenases have been related to several functions i.e. plant growth, defense mechanisms against pathogens and pests, and lipid metabolism. Given the proposed roles of LOX isoenzymes and the presence of multiple LOX isoenzymes in soybean vegetative tissue, it is likely that individual isoenzymes play specific functions. Do the isoenzymes show differences in which products they form? The basic goal …

Gendered Construction Of The Female Identity, Julie L. Lemley Aug 2014

Gendered Construction Of The Female Identity, Julie L. Lemley

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Since Garfinkle’s ground-breaking work on labeling in the 1950’s, the link between identity formation, specifically as constructed by external social messages intentionally directed by authority, and resultant behaviors has been well established. This research has extended upon this assumption, applying critical media and rhetorical methods to advertising aimed at adolescents, a particularly vulnerable group at a point of transition and identity formation. The adolescent negotiation of the transition from childhood (child identity) to adulthood (adult identity), has always been a uniquely critical stage of development. Moreover, the research has indicated that adolescents are particularly susceptible to influence by those in …

Applying Early Existential Critiques To Contemporary Themes In American Culture, Erik S. Berquist, Derek J. Skillings Aug 2014

Applying Early Existential Critiques To Contemporary Themes In American Culture, Erik S. Berquist, Derek J. Skillings

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Charles Taylor, Carl Elliot, Alexis De Tocqueville, and Lionel Trilling have presented and critically analyzed a number of ideals that animate currents in contemporary American Culture, which include authenticity, sincerity, pluralism, subjectivism, and self-actualization, but these ideals do not harmoniously coexist; rather, they inevitably conflict. These notions have been realized in a way that is unique in their current understandings. Though there is the appearance of some homogeneity amongst these themes, they inevitably clash and contain internal tensions. The philosophers Kierkegaard and Nietzsche respond to many of the ideas that underlie these modern notions. Though differing in degrees, these critiques …

Implementation Of A Segmented, Transactional Database Caching System, Benjamin J. Sandmann Aug 2014

Implementation Of A Segmented, Transactional Database Caching System, Benjamin J. Sandmann

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Research on algorithms and concepts regarding memory-based data caching can help solve the performance bottleneck in current Database Management Systems. Problems such as data concurrency, persistent storage, and transaction management have limited most memory cache’s capabilities. It has also been tough to develop a proper user- oriented and business friendly way of implementing such a system. The research of this project focused on code implementation, abstract methodologies and how to best prepare such an application for common business usage.

Effect Of Conditioned Medium On The Recovery Of Dormant Mycobacteria In Culture, Kelly E. Rock Aug 2014

Effect Of Conditioned Medium On The Recovery Of Dormant Mycobacteria In Culture, Kelly E. Rock

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Mpt) is the etiologic agent of Johne’s disease, a chronic intestinal disease in cattle that threatens the economic viability of dairy farming. Diagnostic culture is typically unrewarding until several years after infection when clinical signs can be observed. This leads to widespread infection within the herd. Difficulty in culturing Mpt may be a result of oxidative damage due to the increased metabolic rate when dormant organisms are recovered in a nutrient rich medium. In order to improve recovery it is believed that some organisms secrete a growth factor in times of environmental stress which enables them …

The Basis Of Self And Other In Gender Constructed Identity, Julie L. Lemley Aug 2014

The Basis Of Self And Other In Gender Constructed Identity, Julie L. Lemley

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

This paper is an extension of previous research projects wherein I applied theories of identity and labeling (Garfinkle), power (French and Raven) and gender (Pearson, West and Turner) to adolescent girls’ identity construction. Using methods of textual criticism, I argued then that the advertising targeting adolescent girls at the crucial transitional period between child identity and adult identity was dominated by patriarchal imagery, the implications of which are sexual violence, low-self esteem and self-objectification by young women. This paper applies the same methodology but to identity formation of adolescent boys, arguing on the basis of Hegel’s master-slave dialectic that adolescent …

The Prevention Of Inflammatory-Related Liver Damage By Tamoxifen In Rats Given Fish Oil, Renae Haycraft Aug 2014

The Prevention Of Inflammatory-Related Liver Damage By Tamoxifen In Rats Given Fish Oil, Renae Haycraft

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

The focus of this research was to decrease inflammatory-related liver damage from tamoxifen in rats by adding fish oil to the diet. Tamoxifen causes a significant increase in inflammation of the liver. Inflammation increases with the production of prostaglandins by a metabolic pathway involving arachidonic acid. The metabolism of tamoxifen by the enzyme cytochrome P450 leads to an increase in the production of prostaglandins. The increased inflammation is proportional to lipid accumulation and ultimately lipid peroxidation in the liver. Resulting damage in humans includes hepatic steatosis (fatty liver), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and cirrhosis. Fish oils rich in omega-3 fatty acids, …

Assessment Of The Mankato Area's Young Adult Population's Knowledge Of Mall Video Mining For Marketing Research, Tyler S. Goodmanson, Brett E. Fleck, Emily A. Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

The most modern form of gathering marketing information is not as new as many people believe. The trepidation of Big Brother’s cameras watching down on us puts a chill down most peoples’ backs. In numerous mall stores, cameras are located in each store and are examining you. Most believe that the cameras are positioned for the purpose of shoplifting and crime, but the truth is many are also used for the purpose of marketing. Video mining as it is known has emerged as the latest method of conducting market research. The stores that are participating in this study are diligently …

Characterizations Of Proteins Interacting With The Alpha Subunit Of Actin Capping Protein, Angelique Ducharme, Charity Zabel

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Actin, a filamentous component of all cells, contributes to cell shape, cell motility and force transmission. Actin assembly and dynamics are regulated by a diverse array of regulatory proteins, including actin capping protein (CP). CP is a heterodimeric protein composed of two subunits, alpha (a) and beta (ß). Three isoforms of each subunit exist in eukaryotes. The ß isoforms have been shown to have distinct functions in vivo. The functions of the specific a isoforms have yet to be determined. Overall, the amino acid sequence of the a isoforms are highly conserved, sharing approximately 90% sequence identity. The region of …
