'Sophisticated Robots': Balancing Liability, Regulation, And Innovation, F. Patrick Hubbard

Faculty Publications

Our lives are being transformed by large mobile “sophisticated robots” with increasingly higher levels of autonomy, intelligence, and interconnectivity among themselves. For example, driverless automobiles are likely to become commercially available within a decade. Many people who suffer physical injuries from these robots will seek legal redress for their injury, and regulatory schemes are likely to impose requirements to reduce the number and severity of injuries.

This Article addresses the issue of whether the current liability and regulatory systems provide a fair, efficient method for balancing the concern for physical safety against the need to incentivize the innovation necessary to …

Center for Oral Health Research Faculty Publications

AIM: Variations in the expression of cytokines during the progression of periodontitis remain ill-defined. We evaluated the expression of 19 cytokine genes related to T-cell phenotype/function during initiation, progression and resolution of periodontitis, and related these to the expression of soft and bone tissue destruction genes (TDGs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A ligature-induced periodontitis model was used in rhesus monkeys (M. mulatta) (n = 18). Gingival tissues were taken at baseline pre-ligation, 2 weeks and 1 month (Initiation) and 3 months (progression) post ligation. Ligatures were removed and samples taken 2 months later (resolution). Total RNA was isolated and the Rhesus …

Alternative Control Measures For Tpb In Mississippi, M. Portilla Sep 2014

Alternative Control Measures For Tpb In Mississippi, M. Portilla

Midsouth Entomologist

Tarnished plant bug (TPB), Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), is a common pest of the main agricultural crops in Mississippi, particularly of cotton in the Mississippi Delta. Tarnished Plant Bug in cotton is economically important through reductions of crop yield. Losses may vary depending on TPB population levels, environmental conditions, or efficacy of insecticides. For more than 60 years numerous investigations on TPB control have been conducted based on biology, hosts, and distribution; however, more studies need to be conducted on ecology, behavior, and population dynamics to better understand its control. The experiences gained in the last 30 years of …

Molecular And Population Genetics Of The Tarnished Plant Bug: Current Status And Future Needs, O. P. Perera, G. L. Snodgrass, R. G. Luttrell

Midsouth Entomologist

Tarnished plant bug (TPB) continues to be the most important pest of cotton in the midsouth, but management of this insect has not been successful because of the development of resistance to insecticides. Although a large number of studies have been conducted on TPB ecology, host utilization, distribution, and insecticide resistance, there is a general paucity of data on genetics of TPB. A large array of nucleotide sequence data is available in public databases to facilitate studies on genetics, population genomics, and physiology of TPB. In this manuscript we present a brief review of past work on TPB, and discuss …

Life Table Parameters For Tarnished Plant Bug Models, K. C. Allen, M. A. Caprio, K. T. Edwards

Midsouth Entomologist

The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot De Beauvois) (TPB), is a highly polyphagous insect that feeds on numerous wild and cultivated host plants. Previous papers have reported the survival and developmental times of immature stages of TPB and the fecundity and longevity of adults on various host plants, but the majority of these studies have used the common green bean as the food source. The life history information reported in these previous studies can be used as parameter estimates in the construction of realistic models depicting the population dynamics of this important insect pest.

Why Do Mississippi Delta And Hills Populations Of Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus Lineolaris) (Hemiptera:Miridae) Impact Cotton Differently?, D. E. Fleming, F. R. Musser Sep 2014

Why Do Mississippi Delta And Hills Populations Of Tarnished Plant Bug (Lygus Lineolaris) (Hemiptera:Miridae) Impact Cotton Differently?, D. E. Fleming, F. R. Musser

Midsouth Entomologist

Tarnished Plant Bug, Lygus lineolaris, is a serious pest of cotton in Mississippi, but damage to cotton and costs for control are not the same in the two cotton growing regions of Mississippi. Economic losses to L. lineolaris are higher in the Delta region than in the Hills region. Reasons for the differences may be due to the differences in the landscape between the two regions. The Hills region is a more heterogeneous landscape than the Delta and this difference may affect insecticide resistance rates, levels of beneficial insects and pathogens, and movement of L. lineolaris. This report discusses these …

Artificial Diets For Life Tables Bioassays Of Tpb In Mississippi, M. Portilla, G. L. Snodgrass, R. G. Luttrell

Midsouth Entomologist

Two artificial diets for mass rearing and bioassay of the tarnished plant bug, (TPB), Lygus lineolaris Palisot de Beauvois, (Hemiptera: Miridae) were modified and developed, respectively. The first diet is a modification of a semisolid artificial diet (NI diet), which permits large scale rearing of omnivore insects such as TPB and the western tarnished plant bug, (WTPB), Lygus hesperus Knight. Both species can be produced with higher biological fitness values than those reported for both species using the existing standard NI diet. The modified artificial diet cut the coking component (NI carnivore diet), avoided antibiotics, acids, and formaldehyde, and changed …

Modeling Flightless Galapagos Seabirds As Impacted By El Nino And Climate Change, Brian Seth Putman Sep 2014

Modeling Flightless Galapagos Seabirds As Impacted By El Nino And Climate Change, Brian Seth Putman

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Noteworthy species endemic to the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador are two flightless birds, the Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) and Flightless Cormorant (Phalacrocrax harrisi). Both adapted increased swimming ability at the cost of flight. This however has limited their ability to find richer feeding grounds in times of low resource availability, or to escape potential predators. Their population numbers, though small, were stable. Stress on this stability has increased since human arrival. Various invasive species from pets, farm animals and rats to even mosquito vectors of avian disease accompanied humans. . El Nino Southern Oscillation or ENSO …

Virulence of infectious pathogens can be unstable and evolve rapidly depending on the evolutionary dynamics of the organism. Experimental evolution can be used to characterize pathogen evolution, often with the underlying objective of understanding evolution of virulence. We used experimental evolution techniques (serial transfer experiments) to investigate differential growth and virulence of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a fungal pathogen that causes amphibian chytridiomycosis. We tested two lineages of Bd that were derived from a single cryo-archived isolate; one lineage (P10) was passaged 10 times, whereas the second lineage (P50) was passaged 50 times. We quantified time to …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

MutS Homolog 1 (MSH1) encodes a plant-specific protein that functions in mitochondria and chloroplasts. We showed previously that disruption or suppression of the MSH1 gene results in a process of developmental reprogramming that is heritable and non-genetic in subsequent generations. In Arabidopsis, this developmental reprogramming process is accompanied by striking changes in gene expression of organellar and stress response genes. This developmentally reprogrammed state, when used in crossing, results in a range of variation for plant growth potential. Here we investigate the implications of MSH1 modulation in a crop species. We found that MSH1-mediated phenotypic variation in Sorghum bicolor …

Effect Of Soil Sampling Density And Landscape Features On Soil Test Phosphorus, Donald J. Stamper, Carmen T. Agouridis, Dwayne R. Edwards, Mark A. Purschwitz

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Organic and/or inorganic fertilizers are used to promote crop growth yet the rate of fertilizer application is often based on the nitrogen needs of the crop and not the phosphorus needs, especially when utilizing animal manures with low N-to-P ratios as compared to plant N:P uptake. Because of this, soil phosphorus levels in many areas of the world are in excess of crop needs. Excessive levels of phosphorus in water bodies such as streams and lakes can result in a condition known as eutrophication. With eutrophication, nutrients promote algal growth which in turn decreases dissolved oxygen levels in receiving water …

Diesel use on farms in the United States has remained relatively constant since 1985, decreasing slightly in 2009, which may be attributed to price increases and the economic recession. During this time, the United States’ harvested area also has remained relatively constant at roughly 300 million acres. In 2010, farm diesel use was 5.4% of the total United States diesel use. Crops accounting for an estimated 65% of United States farm diesel use include corn, soybean, wheat, hay, and alfalfa, respectively, based on harvested crop area and a recent analysis of estimated fuel use by crop. Diesel use in these …

Dna Real Estate: The Myriad Genetics Case And The Implications Of Granting Patent Eligibility To Complimentary Dna, Sarah Elizabeth Hagan

Northern Illinois University Law Review

In June 2013, in Ass'n for Molecular Pathology et. al., v. Myriad Genetics, Inc., the Supreme Court examined the patent eligibility of isolated (human) DNA and its components. This was in response to advances in breast cancer prescreening surrounding mutations associated with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. In accordance with 35 U.S.C. §101, the Court evaluated whether naturally occurring segments of DNA and synthetically created segments of v DNA were patent eligible. The Court found that while isolated natural DNA segments were patent ineligible, synthetically created DNA segments were not precluded. This Note examines the potential economic and ethical implications …

The Fourth Trimester, Saru M. Matambanadzo Sep 2014

The Fourth Trimester, Saru M. Matambanadzo

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article introduces a new conceptual framework to the legal literature on pregnancy and pregnancy discrimination: the fourth trimester. The concept of a fourth trimester, drawn from maternal nursing and midwifery, refers to the crucial three to six month period after birth when many of the physical, psychological, emotional, and social effects of pregnancy continue. Giving this concept legal relevance extends the scope of pregnancy beyond the narrow period defined by conception, gestation, and birth and acknowledges that pregnancy is a relational process, not an individual event. In the United States, however, antidiscrimination law has failed to acknowledge the demands …

Selective Phosphorylation Modulates The Pip2 Sensitivity Of The Cam-Sk Channel Complex, Miao Zhang, Xuan-Yu Meng, Meng Cui, John M. Pascal, Diomedes E. Logothetis, Ji-Fang Zhang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP2) regulates the activities of many membrane proteins including ion channels through direct interactions. However, the affinity of PIP2 is so high for some channel proteins that its physiological role as a modulator has been questioned. Here we show that PIP2 is an important cofactor for activation of small conductance Ca2+-activated potassium channels (SK) by Ca2+-bound calmodulin (CaM). Removal of the endogenous PIP2 inhibits SK channels. The PIP2-binding site resides at the interface of CaM and the SK C-terminus. We further demonstrate that the affinity of PIP2 for its target proteins can be regulated by cellular signaling. Phosphorylation …

Education Transformation In Malaysia Through Spiritual Intelligence: Perspective Of Imam Al Ghazzali, S.B. Hanefar, Saedah Siraj, C.Z. Sa’Ari

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Education in Malaysia is going through a transformation period from knowledge based education to value based (holistic) education which is being clearly objectified in the National Education Philosophy. But somehow rather the implementation of this holistic education seems to be vague across many stages of education in Malaysia especially the implementation of spiritual intelligence. There is a gap between the current practices in our education industry with the National Education Philosophy. Many social problems among students and adolescents are being reported that are very alarming and could be the hindrance factor for Malaysia to achieve its Vision 2020. To achieve …

A Preliminary Report On The Contact-Independent Antagonism Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans By Rhodococcus Rhodochrous Strain Dap96253., Christopher T. Cornelison, M. Kevin Keel, Kyle T. Gabriel

KIP Articles

The recently identified causative agent of White-Nose Syndrome (WNS), Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has been responsible for the mortality of an estimated 5.5 million North American bats since its emergence in 2006. A primary focus of the National Response Plan, established by multiple state, federal and tribal agencies in 2011, was the identification of biological control options for WNS. In an effort to identify potential biological control options for WNS, multiple induced Rhodococcus rhodochrous strain DAP96253 was screened for anti-P. destructans activity.
