Engineering Design: A Cognitive Process Approach, Greg Joseph Strimel Oct 2014

Engineering Design: A Cognitive Process Approach, Greg Joseph Strimel

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this dissertation was to identify the cognitive processes used by advanced pre-engineering students to solve complex engineering design problems. Students in technology and engineering education classrooms are often taught to use an ideal engineering design process that has been generated mostly by educators and curriculum developers. However, the review of literature showed that it is unclear as to how advanced pre-engineering students cognitively navigate solving a complex and multifaceted problem from beginning to end. Additionally, it was unclear how a student thinks and acts throughout their design process and how this affects the viability of their solution. …

Training The Foot Soldiers Of Inquiry: Development And Evaluation Of A Graduate Teaching Assistant Learning Community, Kimberly Linenberger, Michael C. Slade, Elizabeth A. Addis, Emily R. Elliot

Faculty Articles

As part of a Howard Hughes Program for Innovation in Science Education grant at Iowa State University, a series of interdisciplinary graduate teaching assistant learning communities (TALC) were developed. The purpose of these communities was to create an environment to facilitate teaching assistants' pedagogical development and training to enhance the implementation of inquiry experiences in the undergraduate laboratories. The TALC evaluated in this study were held for two consecutive semesters and included teaching assistants who facilitated multi-week course-based research experiences in their respective STEM courses. Topics discussed during the TALC were based on the teaching assistants' concerns related to teaching …

Dipl 4277 Aa Global Health, Bioterrorism, And International Security, Yanzhong Huang Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

Health issues, including infectious diseases, have affected world history more extensively than most of us can imagine. In today’s world, international trade and travel threaten pandemics by transporting and spreading diseases globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious disease, coupled with the looming threat of bioterrorism, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels post-Cold War efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges. How did epidemics function as causal agents of historical change? What are the major linkages between health and …

Protective Effects Of Social Support And Self-Esteem On Sexual Minority Young Adults' Mental Health, Sara Bock Oct 2014

Protective Effects Of Social Support And Self-Esteem On Sexual Minority Young Adults' Mental Health, Sara Bock

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Existing research has established that lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) youths experience higher rates of mental illness. However, fewer studies have examined what influences these disparate outcomes. Meyer's (2003) minority stress theory suggests that social factors, such as social support, and internal resources, such as self-esteem, are important potential moderators that may buffer the detrimental effects of stigma-related stress for sexual minority individuals. This study examined the potential protective effects peer support, parent support, school support, and self-esteem in adolescence in explaining mental health disparities between sexual minority and heterosexual young adults. Mental health outcomes included alcohol consumption, depressive symptoms, …

The Role Of Chemical Attractants In The Use Of Tick Traps For Life Stages Of Tick Species Ixodes Scapularis, Dermacentor Variabilis And Amblyomma Maculatum, Pamela C. Kelman Oct 2014

The Role Of Chemical Attractants In The Use Of Tick Traps For Life Stages Of Tick Species Ixodes Scapularis, Dermacentor Variabilis And Amblyomma Maculatum, Pamela C. Kelman

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Amblyomma maculatum, Ixodes scapularis and Dermacentor variabilis are three of the hard-bodied ticks found in the United States. This study explored three aspects of the appetence process of these tick species: attraction, desiccation survival, and locomotive activity. The first portion of this work was to improve one of the standard methods used for collecting ticks from the environment, the tick trap. To determine the attractants needed to capture all life stages of the three chosen species of ticks in the field using tick traps, a series of experiments were conducted using laboratory-reared larval, nymphal and adult A. maculatum, I. scapularis …

Data Completion Methods For Improved Developmental Stage Annotation Of Drosophila Embryos In Images, Chitsanu Janyalikit Oct 2014

Data Completion Methods For Improved Developmental Stage Annotation Of Drosophila Embryos In Images, Chitsanu Janyalikit

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Drosophila melanogaster is a dominant model organism for studying the function of animal genes in initial stages of embryogenesis. Usually, images containing Drosophila gene expression patterns are captured at different developmental stages to study the interconnection of animal genes. To achieve most biologically meaningful results, gene expression images from a similar stage should be compared. Currently, biologists manually classify embryos in images into different stages, which is time intensive and infeasible for current massively produced gene expression images. Therefore, there is a need to develop an automatic system for the annotation.

Gene expression information in embryo images usually appears as …

The Transfenestrational Imaginary: Periodizing Vineland’S Sixties, Johanna Isaacson Oct 2014

The Transfenestrational Imaginary: Periodizing Vineland’S Sixties, Johanna Isaacson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

"The Transfenestrational Imaginary: Periodizing Vineland's Sixties" argues that the representational strategy in Vineland has much in common with Fredric Jameson's sixties periodization strategy, and offers a sustained analogy between narrative strategy and historiography. I suggest that Vineland is most productively seen as a continuation of the anti-literary genres of the sixties underground press and manifesto forms, genres that were necessarily temporary and politicized, and became opaque when separated from the context of active political social movements. The paper focuses on two key figures in the novel, Frenesi Gates and Zoyd Wheeler, and argues that the two are associated with …

Covington Is The Non-Place For Me: Walker Percy’S Topophilia In The Deserts Of Theory And Consumption, Chris Margrave Oct 2014

Covington Is The Non-Place For Me: Walker Percy’S Topophilia In The Deserts Of Theory And Consumption, Chris Margrave

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In a short, seemingly one-off essay, "Why I Live Where I Live," Walker Percy writes that particular cities can either aid or restrict a writer's ability to make sense of one's existence in the tumultuous twentieth century. For Percy, the ghosts of the past can inundate a place. He advised writers, especially Southern ones, to "avoid the horrors of total placement." In citing Charleston, South Carolina, and Mobile, Alabama, as places where a Southern writer's family has lived for 200 years, Percy remarks that such cities are prone to be haunted places where "ancestors perch on your shoulder" …

Review Of Eat It: Sex, Food And Women's Writing, Edited By Nicole Baute And Brianna Goldberg, Marc Ouellette Oct 2014

Review Of Eat It: Sex, Food And Women's Writing, Edited By Nicole Baute And Brianna Goldberg, Marc Ouellette

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Simply put, Eat It: Sex, Food and Women's Writing surpasses its rather immodest claims. This is no mean feat, for the editors allow that they have collected short stories, non-fiction shorts and poetry that, as the back claims offers, hinge "on the carnal." More than that, the gathered works purportedly address the ways in which experiencing food entails nothing short of "power, biology, social obligation, experimentation, nourishment, pain and pleasure." The authors treat the topics, ranging from the politics of potatoes to tricks for field dressing deer, with a blend of seriousness and humour befitting the material. What …

Development Of Ultrasound Sensitive Eliposomes Containing Doxorubicin For Drug Delivery, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt, Kuo-Chen Wei

Faculty Publications

Aims: A novel nanocarrier was formulated by remote loading of doxorubicin (Dox) into a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) liposome that also contains various perfluorocarbon (PFC) droplets within its aqueous interior. It was shown that Dox can be loaded to a level of up to 67% into these large unilamellar vesicles composed of DPPC and cholesterol by employing a transmembrane pH gradient technique.

Methods: The different encapsulation efficiencies for these eLipoDox constructs of differing PFC composition are 45.5% (PFC5), 31.5% (PFC6) and 66.7% (PFC5/PFC6 mixture, PFCm). At 30 seconds of insonation, the eLipoDox formulation with PFCm droplets appeared to release more Dox than …

Vocal Fold Epithelial Barrier In Health And Injury: A Research Review., Elizabeth E. Levendoski, Ciara Leydon, Susan L. Thibeault Oct 2014

Vocal Fold Epithelial Barrier In Health And Injury: A Research Review., Elizabeth E. Levendoski, Ciara Leydon, Susan L. Thibeault

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Purpose: Vocal fold epithelium is composed of layers of individual epithelial cells joined by junctional complexes constituting a unique interface with the external environment. This barrier provides structural stability to the vocal folds and protects underlying connective tissue from injury while being nearly continuously exposed to potentially hazardous insults, including environmental or systemic-based irritants such as pollutants and reflux, surgical procedures, and vibratory trauma. Small disruptions in the epithelial barrier may have a large impact on susceptibility to injury and overall vocal health. The purpose of this article is to provide a broad-based review of current knowledge of the vocal …

Gender-Responsive Policy Development In Corrections: What We Know And Roadmaps For Change, Erica King Msw, Jillian Foley Mppm Oct 2014

Gender-Responsive Policy Development In Corrections: What We Know And Roadmaps For Change, Erica King Msw, Jillian Foley Mppm

Justice Policy

Lack of gender-informed policy creates challenges for correctional practitioners. When there is a gap between training that is evidence-based and gender-informed and what is written in policy, staff may find themselves hindered in their attempts to work toward establishing a gender-responsive environment. This policy bulletin, released in February 2015 and based on survey data and focus groups with women, is an initial step to determine the existence of gender-informed policy within correctional agencies. The findings of this bulletin provide an overview of the current state of gender-responsive policies for women and define a focus for future research, training and technical …

Roma And Czechs: Mindful Of Difference, Matthew Richard Oct 2014

Roma And Czechs: Mindful Of Difference, Matthew Richard

Southern Anthropologist

This essay applies theory and method developed over the past two decades by a number of cognitively- and psychologically-oriented social scientists to explore antipathy between Czechs and Roma in the present-day Czech Republic. It investigates how Czech understandings of personhood and otherness are variously organized, acquired, and practiced. Although ethnic hatred continues to be a problem in the Czech Republic, recent findings in psychological anthropology advise against assuming that it is reproduced wholesale from one generation to the next—nor even one instant to the next. The main source of data is the narratives of twenty-five young Czechs, who recall their …

Attitudes Toward Motherhood Among Sexual Minority Women In The United States, Emily Kazyak, Nicholas Park, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil Oct 2014

Attitudes Toward Motherhood Among Sexual Minority Women In The United States, Emily Kazyak, Nicholas Park, Julia Mcquillan, Arthur L. Greil

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

In this article, we use data from the National Survey of Fertility Barriers—a national, population-based telephone survey—to examine how sexual minority women construct and value motherhood. We analyze the small (N = 43) random sample of self-identified sexual minority women using “survey-driven narrative construction,” which entails converting the structured answers and open-ended responses for each respondent into narratives and identifying themes. We focused on both sexual minority women’s desires and intentions to parent and on the importance they place on motherhood. We found that there is considerable variation in this population. Many sexual minority women distinguish between having and raising …

Dynamics Of Alpha Control: Preparatory Suppression Of Posterior Alpha Oscillations By Frontal Modulators Revealed With Combined Eeg And Event-Related Optical Signal, Kyle E. Mathewson, Diane M. Beck, Tony Ro, Edward L. Maclin, Kathy A. Low, Monica Fabiani, Gabriele Gratton Oct 2014

Dynamics Of Alpha Control: Preparatory Suppression Of Posterior Alpha Oscillations By Frontal Modulators Revealed With Combined Eeg And Event-Related Optical Signal, Kyle E. Mathewson, Diane M. Beck, Tony Ro, Edward L. Maclin, Kathy A. Low, Monica Fabiani, Gabriele Gratton

Publications and Research

We investigated the dynamics of brain processes facilitating conscious experience of external stimuli. Previously, we proposed that alpha (8–12 Hz) oscillations, which fluctuate with both sustained and directed attention, represent a pulsed inhibition of ongoing sensory brain activity. Here we tested the prediction that inhibitory alpha oscillations in visual cortex are modulated by top–down signals from frontoparietal attention networks. We measured modulations in phase-coherent alpha oscillations from superficial frontal, parietal, and occipital cortices using the event-related optical signal (EROS), a measure of neuronal activity affording high spatiotemporal resolution, along with concurrently recorded EEG, while participants performed a visual target detection …

First Record Of The Tropical House Gecko Hemidactylus Mabouia (Moreau De Jonnès, 1818) In Texas, Alejandro Fierro-Cabo, August Rentfro Oct 2014

First Record Of The Tropical House Gecko Hemidactylus Mabouia (Moreau De Jonnès, 1818) In Texas, Alejandro Fierro-Cabo, August Rentfro

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Invasions of the tropical house gecko Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnes, 1818) in the tropical Americas are well documented. While this gecko has been reported as well established and expanding its range in Florida, here we document the first record in the United States outside of this state. We detected a small reproducing population in Cameron County, Brownsville, Texas. We expect a rapid colonization of buildings by this species in southern Texas. We consider that this potential invasion poses novel obstacles to the continued presence of the earlier invasive Mediterranean gecko Hemidactylus turcicus (Linnaeus, 1758) across Texas

Role Of The Serotonin Transporter Gene In Resilience To Stress And Trauma: An Integrative Review, Kosuke Niitsu Oct 2014

Role Of The Serotonin Transporter Gene In Resilience To Stress And Trauma: An Integrative Review, Kosuke Niitsu

Posters and Presentations: College of Nursing

Resilience is defined as a multi-dimensional dynamic concept of positive adaptation to stress and trauma. It is estimated that 38 - 52% of phenotypic variation in resilience among Americans is due to genetic variance. Among nine candidate genes associated with resilience, the promoter region of serotonin transporter gene (5- HTTLPR) is of increasing clinical interest. Accumulating evidence suggests those who carry the Short (S) allele of 5-HTTLPR may be at increased risk of developing psychopathology such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, little is known about whether S allele carriers are less resilient to stress and trauma compared to Long …

Striving For Integration: Referential Activity And Object Relational Level In A Sample Of Bisexual Women, Lauren Demille Oct 2014

Striving For Integration: Referential Activity And Object Relational Level In A Sample Of Bisexual Women, Lauren Demille

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Sexuality has been theorized as a particular human experience that is driven, unmirrored in development, and enigmatic, not reaching what Fonagy describes as "second order representation." Yet, as a social being, one is expected to declare and publically live out a sexual identity. This study is situated within this point of contact between the visceral and the sociolinguistic, with particular attention paid to the experiences of bisexual women, whose potential challenges in articulating a sexual identity are considered. The study sample was comprised of forty bisexual women participating in the Dually Attracted Women's Narratives study (Levy-Warren, 2013) returning for the …

When Wives Migrate And Leave Husbands Behind: A Jamaican Marriage Pattern, Elaine B. Douglas-Harrison Oct 2014

When Wives Migrate And Leave Husbands Behind: A Jamaican Marriage Pattern, Elaine B. Douglas-Harrison

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For over a hundred years Jamaicans have been migrating to make the proverbial `better life' for themselves and their families. In the early 20th century husbands migrated, leaving wives behind. As economies of the United States and Canada have become more service-oriented, wives migrate leaving husbands behind. The experiences of Jamaican immigrant women are documented in Caribbean migration studies, but the marriages of Jamaican legally-married immigrant wives and their husbands left behind in Jamaica are so far unstudied. The main research question of this study is what maintains these transnational marriages over time, sometimes for decades, when spouses see each …

Climate Change, Technology Transfer And Intellectual Property: Options For Action At The Unfccc, Dalindyebo Shabalala

School of Law Faculty Publications

In his dissertation, the author examines the issue of whether intellectual property poses a barrier to technology transfer to address climate change and if so, what policymakers should do at the multilateral level. The book refocuses the question away from empirical approaches toward the key question of the legal capacity of developing countries to prospectively restructure their economies to access technologies and move up the technology value chain. It concludes with a set of recommendations for action at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The author defended his dissertation Oct. 15, 2014, at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. …

The biological diversity of arid and semi-arid ecosystems is threatened by exploitation of water resources for agricultural and economic development. As demand for the scarce water supplies of these regions has increased in recent decades in North America, efforts to moderate consumptive water use generally have been unsuccessful. This problem is highlighted in Mexico, where arid and semi-arid regions represent approximately 65% of the land area and are home to over 46% of the populace. The Chihuahuan Desert is the largest and most biodiverse desert in Mexico, and also is one of the more degraded by unsustainable use of water …

Variability Of Fev And Criterion For Acute Pulmonary Exacerbation, Bradlee A. Jenkins, L. Lee Glenn

ETSU Faculty Works

Excerpt: Morgan et al. (1) concluded that cystic fibrosis (CF) in children and adolescents with a high baseline forced expiratory volume (FEV1) were less likely to have a therapeutic intervention or slower rate of FEV1 decline after a single acute decline in FEV1 of 10%. This conclusion is not well supported due to the arbitrary criteria used for defining a pulmonary exacerbation, as explained below.
