Excellence and Equity
As I write this letter I have now been at IMSA for nine days, though by the time you are reading this I will have been here for almost 90 days. I am excited about what I feel I can offer, and of course a bit anxious about the many things I have yet to learn. But leadership and risk taking are necessary at every great organization and I am confident that the fine people of the IMSA community will work with me to achieve continued excellence for our students and programs on the Aurora campus, across …

Watts Cooking: Using A Microwave To Prepare Bacterial Media For Inquiry-Based Experiments, Judith A. Scheppler
Staff Publications & Research
Microbiology provides an excellent opportunity to capture student interest, encourage exploration, and to begin the development of research skills. With a low power microwave, similar to the type found in homes, and a short list of materials easily obtainable and/or found in many biology laboratories, you can begin to open this exciting world to your life science and biology classes. Microwaves are available at very reasonable prices, and can substitute for a much more expensive laboratory autoclave. Your students can choose and design inquiry investigations as well as learn basic laboratory techniques.

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Background: It has long been suggested that feedback signals from facial muscles influence emotional experience. The recent surge in use of botulinum toxin (BTX) to induce temporary muscle paralysis offers a unique opportunity to directly test this “facial feedback hypothesis.” Previous research shows that the lack of facial muscle feedback due to BTX-induced paralysis influences subjective reports of emotional experience, as well as brain activity associated with the imitation of emotional facial expressions. However, it remains to be seen whether facial muscle paralysis affects brain activity, especially the amygdala, which is known to be responsive to the perception of …

Neonatal Nmda Receptor Blockade Disrupts Spike Timing And Glutamatergic Synapses In Fast Spiking Interneurons In A Nmda Receptor Hypofunction Model Of Schizophrenia, Kevin S. Jones, Joshua G. Corbin, Molly M. Huntsman
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
The dysfunction of parvalbumin-positive, fast-spiking interneurons (FSI) is considered a primary contributor to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SZ), but deficits in FSI physiology have not been explicitly characterized. We show for the first time, that a widely-employed model of schizophrenia minimizes first spike latency and increases GluN2B-mediated current in neocortical FSIs. The reduction in FSI first-spike latency coincides with reduced expression of the Kv1.1 potassium channel subunit which provides a biophysical explanation for the abnormal spiking behavior. Similarly, the increase in NMDA current coincides with enhanced expression of the GluN2B NMDA receptor subunit, specifically in FSIs. In this study mice …

A Joyful Heart Is Good Medicine: Sexuality Conversion Bans In The Courts, Wyatt Fore
A Joyful Heart Is Good Medicine: Sexuality Conversion Bans In The Courts, Wyatt Fore
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Led by California and New Jersey, states have begun to ban Sexual Orientation Change Efforts (SOCE) for minors. States have targeted SOCE, also called ‘gay conversion therapy,’ by regulating state licensure requirements for mental health professionals. Conservative legal groups have challenged these bans in federal court, alleging a variety of constitutional violations sounding in the First and Fourteenth Amendments. More specifically, these legal groups propose theories claiming that the bans infringe upon individuals’ freedom of speech, free exercise, and parental rights. In this Note, I survey the history of these bans, as well as court decisions that have rejected constitutional …

Noise-Enhanced Information Systems, Hao Chen, Lav R. Varshney, Pramod K. Varshney
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Noise, traditionally defined as an unwanted signal or disturbance, has been shown to play an important constructive role in many information processing systems and algorithms. This noise enhancement has been observed and employed in many physical, biological, and engineered systems. Indeed stochastic facilitation (SF) has been found critical for certain biological information functions such as detection of weak, subthreshold stimuli or suprathreshold signals through both experimental verification and analytical model simulations. In this paper, we present a systematic noise-enhanced information processing framework to analyze and optimize the performance of engineered systems. System performance is evaluated not only in terms of …

Effects Of Altered Expression Of The Sumo Conjugating Enzyme, Ubc9 On Mitosis, Meiosis And Conjugation In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Qianyi Yang
Open Access Dissertations
SUMOylation is a critical posttranslational modification in eukaryotic species. Ubc9p is the E2-conjugating enzyme for SUMOylation and consequently it influences multiple cellular pathways. Nuclear proteins are common targets of SUMOylation and regulate nuclear events such as transcription, DNA repair and mitosis. The segregation of the Tetrahymena thermophila genome into two different nuclear compartments provides an unusual context for the analysis of SUMOylation. Each cell contains a transcriptionally silent, diploid germ line micronucleus (MIC) that divides by mitosis and a polyploid transcriptionally active somatic macronucleus (MAC) that divides by an amitotic mechanism. With the long-term goal to exploit these opportunities we …

The Evil Waiter Case, Luis E. Chiesa
The Evil Waiter Case, Luis E. Chiesa
University of Miami Law Review
This essay discusses the “Evil Waiter Case,” a famous hypothetical fact pattern that has been the subject of much debate in the German, Spanish, and Latin American criminal law literature, but that unfortunately has not found its way into Anglo-American scholarly writings. The case presents us with a waiter who notices that the filet mignon she is taking to her assigned table is covered in a poisoned mushroom wine sauce. She nevertheless takes the dish to the table. The patron eats the poisoned filet mignon and dies several minutes later. Did the evil waiter kill the hungry patron or did …

Effect Of Age On Uterine And Ovarian Morphology With Polycystic Ovaries, Ambreen Usmani, Rehana Rehman, Aisha Qamar
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Abstract
Objective: To measure the outcome of age on ovarian and uterine morphology in primary infertile women with
polycystic ovaries.
Methods: The observational cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2009 to March 2010, and the
subjects were recruited from Ziauddin Hospital, Nazimabad, Karachi. The primary infertile subjects with polycystic
ovaries were subdivided into two age groups:20-30 years (group I), and 31-40 years (group II). Both groups had equal
number of subjects. The ovarian volume, follicles count and size, uterine area and endometrial thickness were
determined by transabdominal and transvaginal scans. Shapiro-Wilk's test and Mann-Whitney test were applied,
with p<0.05 being significant.
