Making Sense Of Late Academic Careers: Stories, Images, And Reflections, Stephen Brown, John Ogilvie, Diana Stork, Jill Woodilla
Making Sense Of Late Academic Careers: Stories, Images, And Reflections, Stephen Brown, John Ogilvie, Diana Stork, Jill Woodilla
Organization Management Journal
Four late-career academics take a “first person” view of their careers over time, using written autobiographies. These stories were coded for common phases, themes, and tensions, retold as narratives, reimagined as metaphors, and recreated as visual stories. A brief overview of relevant career theory and identity theory is presented, and various activities undertaken during the self-discovery process are described and linked to storytelling or narrative theory. Interpretation focuses on similarities and differences in the four late academic careers and identity work during role transitions. Connections are made to career theory and identity theory. The authors believe this article might serve …

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
Cotton stalk bark fibers (CSBF) were extracted by steam flash explosion, completed within 0.09 s, and the extracted fibers were compared with those obtained by conventional alkaline treatment. Results indicate that the optimum steam pressure was 2.5 MP a when steaming time was set to 2 min for extracting CSBF. Under the optimized conditions, the obtained CBSF had a cellulose content of 72%, length of 48 mm, fineness of 45 dtex, crystallinity index of 68, moisture regain of 8%, water rention of 98%, and tensile strength of 2.4 cN/dtex, which were similar to results obtained by conventional alkaline treatment. Compared …

Stable Isotopes In Fish Eye Lenses As Potential Recorders Of Trophic And Geographic History, Amy A. Wallace, David J. Hollander, Ernst B. Peebles
Stable Isotopes In Fish Eye Lenses As Potential Recorders Of Trophic And Geographic History, Amy A. Wallace, David J. Hollander, Ernst B. Peebles
Marine Science Faculty Publications
We evaluated eye lenses as potential recorders of stable isotope histories in fish because they consist of metabolically inert optical proteins that are deposited in successive, concentric circles (laminae) much like otolith circuli and tree rings. We conducted four different tests on lenses from red snapper, red grouper, gag, and white grunt. The first test was a low-resolution screening of multiple individuals (4–5 radial groups of laminae per lens, all species except white grunt). Along the radial axis, all individuals exhibited substantial isotopic variability. Red snapper individuals separated into two groups based on δ15N and gag separated into …
Diversity In Human Behavioral Ecology, Raymond B. Hames
Diversity In Human Behavioral Ecology, Raymond B. Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
As befitting an evolutionary approach to the study of human behavior, the papers in this special issue of Human Nature cover a diversity of topics in modern and traditional societies. They include the goals of hunting in foraging societies, social bias, cooperative breeding, the impact of war on women, leadership, and social mobility. In combination these contributions demonstrate the utility of selectionist’s thinking on a wide variety of topics. While many of the contributions employ standard evolutionary biological approaches such as kin selection, cooperative breeding and the Trivers- Willard model, others examine important human issues such as the problems of …

Thermal Analysis Of The Operation Of Microscale Inorganic Light Emitting Diodes, Jizhou Song
Thermal Analysis Of The Operation Of Microscale Inorganic Light Emitting Diodes, Jizhou Song
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
An analytical model is developed to study the thermal properties of microscale inorganic light emitting diodes (μ-ILEDs) with ultra-thin geometries and layouts. The predicted surface and μ-ILED temperatures agree well with experiments and finite element simulations. A simple scaling law is obtained for the normalized μ-ILED temperature versus the normalized μ-ILED size. This study provides theory to guide the design of layouts that minimize adverse thermal effects not only on the performance of μ-ILEDs for solid state lighting, but also for applications integrating μ-ILED devices on complex/soft substrate as are currently of interest in optogenetics and other emerging areas in …
Stretchable Bioelectronics For Medical Devices And Systems, Roozbeh Ghaffari
Stretchable Bioelectronics For Medical Devices And Systems, Roozbeh Ghaffari
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Advances in the microelectronics and telecommunications industries have driven important breakthroughs in medical technologies and health diagnostics over the past decade. However, there are fundamental gaps in size, sensing modalities and mechanical properties between the standard rigid electronics, employed in medical devices today, and the signals emitted by soft biological structures. Here, the author describes novel materials, mechanics, and designs for emerging classes of health monitoring systems and invasive medical devices, including soft wearable patches and flexible catheter-based systems. These emerging devices incorporate microfabricated arrays of sensors (e.g., dry electrodes, temperature sensors, and accelerometers), actuators (e.g., micro-LEDs, piezo-electric ribbons, pacing …

Prediction Of Viscoelastic And Plastic Properties Of Polymers Using Indentation, Vineet Agarwal
Prediction Of Viscoelastic And Plastic Properties Of Polymers Using Indentation, Vineet Agarwal
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Indentation methodologies are gaining popularity as they provide means of local property estimation, utilize smaller sample sizes, and do not destroy specimens. Classically, indentation has been used to measure hardness and Young’s modulus [1], but researchers have also proposed ways of predicting stress–strain curves [2], yield strength [3], and fracture toughness [3]. Different indentation techniques are being used by researchers for different types of investigations. Nanoindentation is an indentation at very small scales to obtain local properties via single indent. Reference Point Indentation (RPI) is a technique wherein multiple indents are carried out at the same location and the material …
Kinematics-Based Tracking Of Cells And Fluorescent Beads Using Feature Vectors, Roger Rowe, Elliot Elson, Guy Genin
Kinematics-Based Tracking Of Cells And Fluorescent Beads Using Feature Vectors, Roger Rowe, Elliot Elson, Guy Genin
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Tracking of cells or fluorescent beads from images of deforming or developing biological systems is a central challenge in biomechanics. In the former case, the objective is often to find the same cell in a tissue or on a Petri dish that has been imaged before and after time in an incubator. In the latter case, the objective is often to estimate mechanical tractions based upon displacement of fluorescent beads embedded in a defined extracellular matrix. A great number of techniques exist for this purpose, and all face challenges in matching cells and beads from one image to the next …

Multiphase Elastic Homogenization, And The Mechanics Of Tendon-To-Bone Attachment, Guy Genin, F. Salimeh Saadat, Stavros Thomopoulos, Victor Birman
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Estimates of the effective stiffness of a composite containing multiple types of inclusions are needed for the design and study of functionally graded systems in engineering and biologic materials. One important stiffening mechanism in biologic systems is the accumulation of a high volume fraction of mineral inclusions within and upon collagen fibers. Modeling of this mechanism is critical for understanding how stresses are transmitted from tendon to bone and for designing improvements to surgical procedures for reattaching tendon to bone. The latter is a critical need because failure rates following surgical reattachment are as high as 94% in some populations. …

Sacrificial Templates For Manufacturing Multidimensional Vasculature, Ryan Gergely, Stephen Pety, Brett Krull, Jason Patrick, Thu Doan, Anthony Coppola, Jeffrey Moore, Nancy Sottos, Scott White
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
Biological systems employ complex, composite architectures that are intimately related to homeostatic functionality. A common necessity underlying many of these systems is the transport of fluids that distribute nutrients, remove waste, and provide thermal regulation. Parallels exist in engineered materials; however, the architectures are comparatively less complex. No single fabrication technique has emerged with the flexibility to create architectures of various size-scale and dimensionality. Esser-Kahn et al. introduced a technique referred to as vaporization of sacrificial components (VaSC) [1]. Poly(lactic acid) PLA fibers are first treated with a catalyst, tin oxalate (SnOx), to lower their depolymerization temperature. The fibers are …
Finite Element Analysis Of Thermomechanical Coupling, Jiaoyan Li
Finite Element Analysis Of Thermomechanical Coupling, Jiaoyan Li
Society of Engineering Science 51st Annual Technical Meeting Archive
In continuum mechanics, the number of balance laws in Lagrangian description can be condensed into two: balance of linear momentum and conservation of energy. In principle, one may perform a finite element analysis of any material provided that we have the constitutive equations of stress tensor, heat flux, and internal energy density. During the process of formulating a constitutive theory, if internal variables are introduced, then correspondingly for each internal variable a governing equation has to be derived. In this study, we formulate a set of generalized constitutive relations, including strain-based return mapping formula, for thermo-visco-elastic-plastic solid. In our formulation, …
