Scalable Tuning Of Building Models To Hourly Data, Aaron Garrett, Joshua New Oct 2014

Scalable Tuning Of Building Models To Hourly Data, Aaron Garrett, Joshua New

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Energy models of existing buildings are unreliable unless calibrated so that they correlate well with actual energy usage. Manual tuning requires a skilled professional and is prohibitively expensive for small projects, imperfect, nonrepeatable, and not scalable to the dozens of sensor channels that smart meters, smart appliances, and sensors are making available. A scalable, automated methodology is needed to quickly, intelligently calibrate building energy models to all available data, increase the usefulness of those models, and facilitate speed-and-scale penetration of simulation-based capabilities into the marketplace for actualized energy savings. The "Autotune" project is a novel, model-agnostic methodology that leverages supercomputing, …

Residency Time As An Indicator Of Reproductive Restraint In Male Burying Beetles, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk, J. Curtis Creighton Oct 2014

Residency Time As An Indicator Of Reproductive Restraint In Male Burying Beetles, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk, J. Curtis Creighton

Faculty Publications

The cost of reproduction theory posits that there are trade-offs between current and future reproduction because resources that are allocated to current offspring cannot be used for future reproductive opportunities. Two adaptive reproductive strategies have been hypothesized to offset the costs of reproduction and maximize lifetime fitness. The terminal investment hypothesis predicts that as individuals age they will allocate more resources to current reproduction as a response to decreasing residual reproductive value. The reproductive restraint hypotheses predicts that as individuals age they will allocate fewer resources to current reproduction to increase the chance of surviving for an additional reproductive opportunity. …

Breast Cancer Incidence And Mortality In A Transitioning Chinese Population: Current And Future Trends, O. L. Wong, Mary Schooling, Benjamin J. Cowling, Gabriel M. Leung

Publications and Research

Background Projections of future trends in cancer incidence and mortality are important for public health planning. Methods By using 1976–2010 data in Hong Kong, we fitted Poisson age-period-cohort models and made projections for future breast cancer incidence and mortality to 2025. Results Age-standardised breast cancer incidence (/mortality) is projected to increase (/decline) from 56.7 (/9.3) in 2011–2015 to 62.5 (/8.6) per 100 000 women in 2021–2025. Conclusions The incidence pattern may relate to Hong Kong’s socio-economic developmental history, while falling mortality trends are, most likely, due to improvements in survival from treatment advancement and improved health service delivery.

Methods To Impair Hematologic Cancer Progenitor Cells And Compounds Related Thereto, Craig T. Jordan Oct 2014

Methods To Impair Hematologic Cancer Progenitor Cells And Compounds Related Thereto, Craig T. Jordan

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Primitive or progenitor hematologic cancer cells have been implicated in the early stages and development of leukemia and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders, including acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic myelogenous leuke mia (CML) and chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL). Interleu kin-3 receptor alpha chain (IL-3Ra or CD123) is strongly expressed on progenitor hematologic cancer cells, but is vir tually undetectable on normal bone marrow cells. The present invention provides methods of impairing progenitor hemato logic cancer (e.g., leukemia and lymphomic) cells by selec tively targeting cells expressing CD123. These methods are useful in the detection and treatment of leukemias and malig nant lymphoproliferative …

Integrin Interaction Inhibitors For The Treatment Of Cancer, Lori Hazlehurst, Mark Mclaughlin, Priyesh Jain, William S. Dalton

USF Patents

Integrin interaction inhibitors using a beta-turn promoter are described herein. These peptides are useful in treating cancer, such as multiple myeloma, by administering a therapeutically effective amount of the integrin interaction inhibitor. Data show that integrin interaction inhibitors act synergistically or additively interact with anti-proliferative agents such as doxorubicin, SAHA, arsenic trioxide, and etoposide.

Collapse Of An Ecological Network In Ancient Egypt, Justin Yeakel, Mathias Pires, Lars Rudolf, Nathaniel Dominy Oct 2014

Collapse Of An Ecological Network In Ancient Egypt, Justin Yeakel, Mathias Pires, Lars Rudolf, Nathaniel Dominy

Dartmouth Scholarship

The dynamics of ecosystem collapse are fundamental to determining how and why biological communities change through time, as well as the potential effects of extinctions on ecosystems. Here, we integrate depictions of mammals from Egyptian antiquity with direct lines of paleontological and archeological evidence to infer local extinctions and community dynamics over a 6,000-y span. The unprecedented temporal resolution of this dataset enables examination of how the tandem effects of human population growth and climate change can disrupt mammalian communities. We show that the extinctions of mammals in Egypt were nonrandom and that destabilizing changes in community composition coincided with …

Causes And Consequences Of Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.) Invasion In Hydrologically Altered Forested Wetlands, Meghan Beth Foard Oct 2014

Causes And Consequences Of Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.) Invasion In Hydrologically Altered Forested Wetlands, Meghan Beth Foard

Student Theses and Dissertations

What drives invasive species success? My research consists of four studies aiming to answer this question for Ligustrum sinense. The four projects are: (1) Synthesis of invasion literature within passenger-driver-backseat driver frameworks; (2) hydrochory investigation of water as a dispersal mechanism for invasion; (3) ecohydrology investigation of inundation effects on seed viability of L. sinense; (4) dendrochronology study of the effects of stream channelization and L. sinense invasion on bottomland oak tree growth. Results suggest that L. sinense initially invaded habitats that were hydrologically altered, resulting in drier conditions and a "novel niche." Dispersal via hydrochory allowed L. sinense to …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE: We assessed salience of subjective memory complaints (SMCs) by older individuals as a predictor of subsequent cognitive impairment while accounting for risk factors and eventual neuropathologies.

METHODS: Subjects (n = 531) enrolled while cognitively intact at the University of Kentucky were asked annually if they perceived changes in memory since their last visit. A multistate model estimated when transition to impairment occurred while adjusting for intervening death. Risk factors affecting the timing and probability of an impairment were identified. The association between SMCs and Alzheimer-type neuropathology was assessed from autopsies (n = 243).

RESULTS: SMCs were …

The Legacy Of Alexander Bain, Stephen Lindsay Satterfield Oct 2014

The Legacy Of Alexander Bain, Stephen Lindsay Satterfield

Theses and Dissertations

Alexander Bain's key works are reviewed once again from a rhetorical and historical perspective. Bain was a Scottish empiricist who lived during the Industrial Revolution and contributed to rhetoric, psychology, education, and logic. Bain's emphasis on contiguity, modes of discourse, and grammar are explained. A brief Bain biography is provided along with Bain's interactions with notable friends. Researching Bain again from an interdisciplinary perspective is undertaken to avoid the usual problems with simply repeating prior academic findings and set opinions. However, the way in which Bain was accepted and then discredited is also discussed.

Fluid circulation in the Earth's crust plays an essential role in surface, near surface, and deep crustal processes. Flow pathways are driven by hydraulic gradients but controlled by material permeability, which varies over many orders of magnitude and changes over time. Although millions of measurements of crustal properties have been made, including geophysical imaging and borehole tests, this vast amount of data and information has not been integrated into a comprehensive knowledge system. A community data infrastructure is needed to improve data access, enable large‐scale synthetic analyses, and support representations of the subsurface in Earth system models. Here, we describe …

Ironic Simplicity: Why Shaken Baby Syndrome Misdiagnoses Should Result In Automatic Reimbursement For The Wrongly Accused, Jay Simmons Oct 2014

Ironic Simplicity: Why Shaken Baby Syndrome Misdiagnoses Should Result In Automatic Reimbursement For The Wrongly Accused, Jay Simmons

Seattle University Law Review

Shaken baby syndrome (SBS)’s shortcomings include the debatable science behind SBS theory and diagnosis—the questioning of which has grown more vociferous—and the arguably biased, discriminatory treatment of the accused. Professor Deborah Tuerkheimer notes that the evolving SBS skepticism and contentious debate has resulted in "chaos" in many SBS adjudications and within the medical and biomechanical fields, with the same SBS proponents and opponents continually crusading for and clashing over their beliefs. The issues surrounding the medical and biomechanical components of SBS diagnoses have been repeatedly examined and discussed, and are not the focus of this Note. This Note recounts those …

Genetic Analysis Of Ton2 Dependent Processes In Microtubule Organization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Samantha Nicole Atkinson Oct 2014

Genetic Analysis Of Ton2 Dependent Processes In Microtubule Organization In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Samantha Nicole Atkinson

Theses and Dissertations

Microtubules carry out many functions within the cell. They're used during mitosis and meiosis to move chromosomes to opposite sides of the cell so that cell division can occur. They're also used as structural support for the cell and are involved in establishing the cell shape. Microtubules are also able to reorient from a longitudinal orientation to a transverse orientation in response to gibberellic acid and auxin (two hormones that are involved in cell elongation). The mechanism for how this reorientation occurs is unknown. The TONNEAU2 (TON2) protein is necessary for proper microtubule organization. We looked at how TON2 affects …
