Effects Of Calcium Silicate Treatment On The Composition Of Forest Floor Organic Matter In A Northern Hardwood Forest Stand, Ankit Balaria, Chris E. Johnson, Peter M. Groffman, Melany C. Fisk

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Calcium amendment can help improve forest sustainability in stands that have been impacted by chronic acid deposition. An important component of this improvement is the stimulation of the microbial activity that supports ecosystem nutrient cycling processes. To test the hypothesis that Ca treatment alters the structure and solubility of organic matter substrates, an important driver of microbial activity, we investigated the effect of wollastonite (CaSiO3) treatment on soil organic matter (SOM) and hot-water-extractable organic matter (HWEOM). We found a decrease in the HWEOM content of forest floor soils within two years of treatment with a high dosage of …

Mechanisms Of Ash Resistance To Emerald Ash Borer: Progress And Gaps, Caterina Villari, Justin G.A. Whitehill, Don Cipollini, Daniel A. Herms, Pierluigi Bonello

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The emerald ash borer (EAB) invasion of North America has caused widespread mortality of native ash, and is threatening the native ash resources. As a consequence of its devastating impact, EAB has caught the attention of the scientific community, and several studies have focused on different aspects of the biology and behavior of this pest, including its interaction with host defenses. Here we present a review of the published literature on mechanisms of ash resistance to EAB, the understanding of which, despite starting from a tabula rasa, has achieved significant progress in the last few years.

Nucleolin (NCL) is a major nucleolar phosphoprotein that has pleiotropic effects on cell proliferation and is elevated in a variety of tumors. NCL is highly phosphorylated at the N-terminus by two major kinases: interphase casein kinase 2 (CK2) and mitotic cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1). Earlier we demonstrated that a NCL-mutant that is partly defective in undergoing phosphorylation by CK2 inhibits chromosomal replication through its interactions with Replication Protein A, mimicking the cellular response to DNA damage. We further delineated that the N-terminus of NCL associates with Hdm2, the most common E3 ubiquitin ligase of p53. We reported that NCL antagonizes …

Experimental Approaches To Study Plant Cell Walls During Plant-Microbe Interactions, Ye Xia, Carloalberto Petti, Mark A. Williams, Seth Debolt

Horticulture Faculty Publications

Plant cell walls provide physical strength, regulate the passage of bio-molecules, and act as the first barrier of defense against biotic and abiotic stress. In addition to providing structural integrity, plant cell walls serve an important function in connecting cells to their extracellular environment by sensing and transducing signals to activate cellular responses, such as those that occur during pathogen infection. This mini review will summarize current experimental approaches used to study cell wall functions during plant-pathogen interactions. Focus will be paid to cell imaging, spectroscopic analyses, and metabolic profiling techniques.

Bone fragility is a concern for aged and diseased bone. Measuring bone toughness and understanding fracture properties of the bone are critical for predicting fracture risk associated with age and disease and for preclinical testing of therapies. A reference point indentation technique (BioDent) has recently been developed to determine bone's resistance to fracture in a minimally invasive way by measuring the indentation distance increase (IDI) between the first and last indentations over cyclic indentations in the same position. In this study, we investigate the relationship between fracture toughness KC and reference point indentation parameters (i.e. IDI, total indentation distance (TID) …

Binary Probe System For Sensitive Detection Of Target Analytes, Dmitry Kolpashchikov, Yulia Gerasimova

UCF Patents

We suggest a novel PCR-free assay that allows fluorescent detection of specific nucleic acid sequences with high selectivity and sensitivity. The assay can discriminate signal nucleotide substitution in an analyzed nucleic acid with high accuracy even at ambient temperatures. The high sensitivity of the assay is predetermined by the possibility of fluorescent signal amplification due to the catalytic action of an enzyme, which recognizes only the complex of the probe with the analyte and not the probe itself. The assay is cost-efficient, which is especially beneficial for the analysis of multiple nucleic acid analytes: two short unmodified oligonucleotides need to …

Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh Oct 2014

Civilization And Self-Determination: Interpreting R.G. Collingwood For The Twenty-First Century - Part I, Gautam Ghosh

Comparative Civilizations Review

This article – the first of two – elaborates and endorses the understanding of civilization as advanced by R. G. Collingwood. Particular attention is given to two of his most neglected works, The New Leviathan and "What 'Civilization' Means." The New Leviathan in particular was written in the context of the rise of fascism and the prosecution of World War II. To support the war effort, Collingwood reconceptualized notions of civilization and linked it to a rationality of self-determination. Central to his argument are the distinctions he draws between civilization and barbarism, on the one hand, and between social, economic …

BACKGROUND: GPRC5A is a retinoic acid inducible gene that is preferentially expressed in lung tissue. Gprc5a- knockout mice develop spontaneous lung cancer, indicating Gprc5a is a lung tumor suppressor gene. GPRC5A expression is frequently suppressed in majority of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs), however, elevated GPRC5A is still observed in a small portion of NSCLC cell lines and tumors, suggesting that the tumor suppressive function of GPRC5A is inhibited in these tumors by an unknown mechanism.

METHODS: In this study, we examined EGF receptor (EGFR)-mediated interaction and tyrosine phosphorylation of GPRC5A by immunoprecipitation (IP)-Westernblot. Tyrosine phosphorylation of GPRC5A by EGFR …

The Effects Of Student Involvement In Afterschool Activities On Childhood Obesity, Lauren E. Van Derzee Oct 2014

The Effects Of Student Involvement In Afterschool Activities On Childhood Obesity, Lauren E. Van Derzee

Master's Theses

Childhood obesity has been a significant health issue in the United States since the 1970s. In an effort to combat this issue, children are encouraged to be physically active and maintain a nutritional diet. Previous sociological literature has analyzed the effects of the family and neighborhood environment in an effort to understand the socioeconomic forces influencing obesity. This study extends this literature by analyzing the effects of how children spend their time in structured, semi-structured, and unstructured afterschool activities. Building upon Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and concept of cultural capital, I argue that afterschool activities present a particular structured …

We examined the relationships between Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy—the three traits of the Dark Triad (DT)—and the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality. The review identified 310 independent samples drawn from 215 sources and yielded information pertaining to global trait relationships and facet-level relationships. We used meta-analysis to examine (a) the bivariate relations between the DT and the five global traits and 30 facets of the FFM; (b) the relative importance of each of the FFM global traits in predicting DT; and (c) the relationship between the DT and FFM facets identified in translational models of narcissism and psychopathy. These …

Traditional Surrogacy In Tennessee: Strange Statute Begets Strange Judicial Ruling, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

According to a recent article in the New York Times by Tamar Lewin, the United States has become – or is in the process of becoming – a mecca for foreign couples seeking the services of a surrogate to gestate a child for them. Theories differ as to the draw, but the lack of national policy or strict regulation is among the most likely suspects.

Family Of Flp Peptides In Caenorhabditis Elegans And Related Nematodes, Chris Li, Kyuhyung Kim

Publications and Research

Neuropeptides regulate all aspects of behavior in multicellular organisms. Because of their ability to act at long distances, neuropeptides can exert their effects beyond the conventional synaptic connections, thereby adding an intricate layer of complexity to the activity of neural networks. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a large number of neuropeptide genes that are expressed throughout the nervous system have been identified. The actions of these peptides supplement the synaptic connections of the 302 neurons, allowing for fine tuning of neural networks and increasing the ways in which behaviors can be regulated. In this review, we focus on a large …

Combining crop plants with other plant species in agro-ecosystems is one way to enhance ecological pest and disease regulation mechanisms. Resource availability and microclimatic variation mechanisms affect processes related to pest and pathogen life cycles. These mechanisms are supported both by empirical research and by epidemiological models, yet their relative importance in a real complex agro-ecosystem is still not known. Our aim was thus to assess the independent effects and the relative importance of different variables related to resource availability and microclimatic variation that explain pest and disease occurrence at the plot scale in real complex agro-ecosystems. The study was …

Investigation Of Enhanced Titanium And Zinc Oxide Semiconductors For The Photodegradation Of Aqueous Organic Compounds, Innocent Udom

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Growing demand and shortages of potable water sources due to industrialization have become a great concern worldwide. Various approaches and solutions have been adopted to provide cleaner and quality water. In a preliminary study, a method of treating wastewater was investigated in which algae were used to remove nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) from wastewater and then the algae were harvested for use as a biofuel. The results from this investigation are included in the Appendix B. Employing traditional oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, and ozone, for treatment of recalcitrant organic compounds have achieved less promising results. However, photocatalysis, an …

Mmu-Mir-615-3p Regulates Lipoapoptosis By Inhibiting C/Ebp Homologous Protein., Yasuhiro Miyamoto, Amy S Mauer, Swarup Kumar, Justin L. Mott, Harmeet Malhi

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Lipoapoptosis occurring due to an excess of saturated free fatty acids such as palmitate is a key pathogenic event in the initiation of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Palmitate loading of cells activates the endoplasmic reticulum stress response, including induction of the proapoptotic transcription factor C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP). Furthermore, the loss of microRNAs is implicated in regulating apoptosis under conditions of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. The aim of this study was to identify specific microRNAs regulating CHOP expression during palmitate-induced ER stress. Five microRNAs were repressed under palmitate-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress conditions in hepatocyte cell lines (miR-92b-3p, miR-328-3p, miR-484, miR-574-5p, …
