Redox Chemistry In The Phosphorus Biogeochemical Cycle, Matthew A. Pasek, Jacqueline M. Sampson, Zachary Atlas Oct 2014

Redox Chemistry In The Phosphorus Biogeochemical Cycle, Matthew A. Pasek, Jacqueline M. Sampson, Zachary Atlas

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The element phosphorus (P) controls growth in many ecosystems as the limiting nutrient, where it is broadly considered to reside as pentavalent P in phosphate minerals and organic esters. Exceptions to pentavalent P include phosphine—PH3—a trace atmospheric gas, and phosphite and hypophosphite, P anions that have been detected recently in lightning strikes, eutrophic lakes, geothermal springs, and termite hindguts. Reduced oxidation state P compounds include the phosphonates, characterized by C−P bonds, which bear up to 25% of total organic dissolved phosphorus. Reduced P compounds have been considered to be rare; however, the microbial ability to use reduced P …

The roles of virus-derived small RNAs (vsRNAs) have been studied in plants and insects. However, the generation and function of small RNAs from cytoplasmic RNA viruses in mammalian cells remain unexplored. This study describes four vsRNAs that were detected in enterovirus 71-infected cells using next-generation sequencing and northern blots. Viral infection produced substantial levels (>105 copy numbers per cell) of vsRNA1, one of the four vsRNAs. We also demonstrated that Dicer is involved in vsRNA1 generation in infected cells. vsRNA1 overexpression inhibited viral translation and internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) activity in infected cells. Conversely, blocking vsRNA1 enhanced …

Misnomers: The Law And Practice Of Child Naming, Joanna L. Grossman Oct 2014

Misnomers: The Law And Practice Of Child Naming, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

What standard should be applied when unwed parents disagree about whether to change a child’s surname? In a recent ruling, Connor H. v. Blake G., the Nebraska Supreme Court held that a five-year-old boy should keep his original surname, his mother’s name at the time of his birth, rather than assuming the surname she later took upon marrying another man or switching to his biological father’s surname. A surname can be changed, this court held, only if doing so is in the child’s best interests, with no special deference to the wishes of the custodial parent. A child is …

Dead-Box Helicase Proteins Disrupt Rna Tertiary Structure Through Helix Capture, Cynthia Pan, Jeffrey P. Potratz, Brian Cannon, Zachary B. Simpson, Jessica L. Ziehr, Pilar Tijerina, Rick Russell Oct 2014

Dead-Box Helicase Proteins Disrupt Rna Tertiary Structure Through Helix Capture, Cynthia Pan, Jeffrey P. Potratz, Brian Cannon, Zachary B. Simpson, Jessica L. Ziehr, Pilar Tijerina, Rick Russell

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

DEAD-box helicase proteins accelerate folding and rearrangements of highly structured RNAs and RNA–protein complexes (RNPs) in many essential cellular processes. Although DEAD-box proteins have been shown to use ATP to unwind short RNA helices, it is not known how they disrupt RNA tertiary structure. Here, we use single molecule fluorescence to show that the DEAD-box protein CYT-19 disrupts tertiary structure in a group I intron using a helix capture mechanism. CYT-19 binds to a helix within the structured RNA only after the helix spontaneously loses its tertiary contacts, and then CYT-19 uses ATP to unwind the helix, liberating the product …

Dynamics And Survival Of Coral And Octocoral Juveniles Following Disturbance On Patch Reefs Of The Florida Reef Tract, Lucy Bartlett Oct 2014

Dynamics And Survival Of Coral And Octocoral Juveniles Following Disturbance On Patch Reefs Of The Florida Reef Tract, Lucy Bartlett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several decades, rapid decline in adult stony-coral (comprising the Orders Scleractinia and Anthomedusae, specifically Family Milleporidae) cover has occurred concurrent with an increase in adult octocoral (Octocorallia/gorgonian) cover along the Florida Reef Tract. In January 2010, the Florida Keys experienced extremely cold air and water temperatures, below the lethal threshold for many reef organisms including corals. Very high stony-coral mortality occurred on some patch reefs. The newly-available space created by this disturbance event provided the opportunity for recruitment and settlement of new coral larvae and other reef organisms.

The goal of this study was to examine post-disturbance …

An Exploration Of The Health Experiences Of Youth Who Were Trafficked For Sex, Christine Ann Meister

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This pilot study used photovoice methodology to explore the current health needs of youth who were trafficked for sex and are now living in an alternative family care setting. The goals of this study were to add to the current literature regarding the health needs of victims of domestic minor sex trafficking and to add a qualitative aspect to the evaluation of the Citrus Helping Adolescents Negatively Impacted by Commercial Exploitation (CHANCE) program. Disposable cameras were distributed to a group of adolescent girls enrolled in the program who were then tasked with taking pictures of things that made them feel …

Human Cytomegalovirus-Encoded Pul7 Is A Novel Ceacam1-Like Molecule Responsible For Promotion Of Angiogenesis., Jason D. Macmaniman, Andrew Meuser, Sara Botto, Patricia P. Smith, Fenyong Liu, Michael A. Jarvis, Jay A. Nelson, Patrizia Caposio

School of Biomedical Sciences

UNLABELLED: Persistent human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection has been linked to several diseases, including atherosclerosis, transplant vascular sclerosis (TVS), restenosis, and glioblastoma. We have previously shown that factors secreted from HCMV-infected cells induce angiogenesis and that this process is due, at least in part, to increased secretion of interleukin-6 (IL-6). In order to identify the HCMV gene(s) responsible for angiogenesis promotion, we constructed a large panel of replication-competent HCMV recombinants. One HCMV recombinant deleted for UL1 to UL10 was unable to induce secretion of factors necessary for angiogenesis. Fine mapping using additional HCMV recombinants identified UL7 as a viral gene required …

Outed At School: Student Privacy Rights And Preventing Unwanted Disclosures Of Sexual Orientation, Evan Ettinghoff

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals often identify their sexual orientation during their formative school years. During this time, they make important decisions about whether they will come out, to whom, and under what circumstances. However, some school officials have taken matters into their own hands, disclosing information about a student’s sexual orientation to parents or family members without the student’s permission, and without considering the student’s well-being and potential consequences at home. This Note explores a student’s constitutional right to privacy in their sexual orientation. It begins by examining the unique problems LGBTQ youth encounter while developing …

"Amorphous Federalism" And The Supreme Court's Marriage Cases, David B. Cruz Oct 2014

"Amorphous Federalism" And The Supreme Court's Marriage Cases, David B. Cruz

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Article addresses the U.S. Supreme Court’s decisions in Hollingsworth v. Perry and United States v. Windsor, the two cases in the October 2012 Term that took up issues of marriage rights of same-sex couples. After Part I of the Article provides a brief Introduction, Part II examines the Supreme Court’s opinion in Perry. It summarizes the litigation; teases out divergent views of the relevance of federalism for the Court’s standing ruling in the case; identifies the problematic constitutional underpinnings of the Perry dissenters’ views of federal court standing, which rely on an unjustified constitutional privileging of initiative lawmaking; and …

© 2014 Matasci et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd. The 1,000 plants (1KP) project is an international multi-disciplinary consortium that has generated transcriptome data from over 1,000 plant species, with exemplars for all of the major lineages across the Viridiplantae (green plants) clade. Here, we describe how to access the data used in a phylogenomics analysis of the first 85 species, and how to visualize our gene and species trees. Users can develop computational pipelines to analyse these data, in conjunction with data of their own that they can upload. Computationally estimated protein-protein interactions and biochemical pathways can be visualized …
