Journal Articles: Oncology and Hematology
BACKGROUND:
We observed a disproportional 18 F-fluorothymidine (F-FLT) uptake in follicular lymphoma (FL) relative to its low cell proliferation. We tested the hypothesis that the 'excess' uptake of 18 F-FLT in FL is related to error-prone DNA repair and investigated whether this also contributes to 18 F-FLT uptake in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL).
METHODS:
We performed immunohistochemical stainings to assess the pure DNA replication marker MIB-1 as well as markers of both DNA replication and repair like PCNA, TK-1 and RPA1 on lymph node biopsies of 27 FLs and 35 DLBCLs. In 7 FL and 15 DLBCL patients, …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The theory of change behind the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) posits that adolescent girls are empowered by acquiring social, health, and economic assets. Girls can draw on these assets to reduce vulnerabilities and expand opportunities, thereby increasing their likelihood of completing school, delaying sexual debut, and reducing the risk of early marriage, unintended pregnancy, acquisition of HIV, and so on. AGEP serves vulnerable adolescent girls in Zambia aged 10–19 in two age cohorts: 10–14-year-olds and 15–19-year-olds. AGEP operates in ten “master sites,” five urban and five rural, in four provinces of Zambia. The three core components of AGEP in …

Evaluation Of Health And Education Impacts Of A Girls’ Safe Spaces Program In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar, Girmay Medhin
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Approximately one in eight of the world’s population is a girl or young woman aged 10–24 and attention is increasingly focusing on the central role of adolescent girls in achieving global health and development goals. Areas of focus by the development field include girls’ education, health, child marriage, and the experience of violence. This study analyzes the educational and health impacts of a program for slum-dwelling girls, including child domestic workers and rural-urban migrants. Established in 2006, Biruh Tesfa (Bright Future) aimed to increase social networks and support for the most marginalized girls in the poorest urban areas of Ethiopia. …
Building The Assets To Thrive: Addressing The Hiv-Related Vulnerabilities Of Adolescent Girls In Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar
Building The Assets To Thrive: Addressing The Hiv-Related Vulnerabilities Of Adolescent Girls In Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Despite decades of investment and dramatic progress against HIV, adolescent girls remain at disproportionate risk of infection. Population Council research shows that the best way to protect girls and young women from HIV and other bad outcomes is to reach them early—before they experience irreversible events like HIV infection or unintended childbearing—and with enough health, social, and cognitive assets to make a measurable difference in their lives. This book is a comprehensive review of three programs launched by the Population Council and the Ethiopian government. Two of the programs work to reduce Ethiopian girls’ HIV risk by providing out-of-school adolescent …
Giving Power To The Powerless: Elizabeth Gaskell's Presentation Of Women In An Age Of Change, Charis Tobias
Giving Power To The Powerless: Elizabeth Gaskell's Presentation Of Women In An Age Of Change, Charis Tobias
Honors Projects
Elizabeth Gaskell takes advantage of the aura of change and ascribes a new vocabulary to Victorian womanhood, one that allows women to be active members of society as well as mothers. The topsy-turvy nature of Victorian society allowed for such changes to be instituted, and Gaskell challenges the female stereotypes of the day. Gaskell’s heroines must struggle with their preconceived, powerless notions of womanhood and the expectations placed upon them by society. This struggle often begins when patriarchal structures fail them and they are left to their own devices. Unlike in other Victorian novels, when women do become powerful, they …
Emergence, Scale, And The Layered Model Of Biological Systems, Katie Morrow
Emergence, Scale, And The Layered Model Of Biological Systems, Katie Morrow
Honors Projects
The layered model of the world—the view that the physical universe is in some important sense ontologically stratified into levels—has commonly been applied in a variety of philosophical contexts, particularly in discussions of reductionism about causation, properties, or theories in science. In this paper I question whether this model, as traditionally understood, adequately reflects a contemporary scientific understanding of the world. Utilizing the layered model, philosophers have tended to focus on composition as the salient interlevel relationship, and to describe systems at temporal instants; while biologists stress the importance of the spatiotemporal scale of description and the environment in governing …

"No Trespassing": Railroad Land Grants, The Right Of Exclusion, And The Origins Of Federal Forest Conservation, Sean Kammer
"No Trespassing": Railroad Land Grants, The Right Of Exclusion, And The Origins Of Federal Forest Conservation, Sean Kammer
Faculty Publications
The Forest Management Act of 1897 established a management model for public lands that, for the most part, remains intact. It embodies a balancing of control and conservation of forest resources such as timber, minerals, and forage with provisions for the exploitation of those resources for private gain. This article explores the historical context in which this landmark legislation arose. It examines the role of large railroad companies, particularly those that received extensive land subsidies, in first challenging the long-standing custom of timber as an open-access resource in the American West. By enforcing their right of exclusion against timber trespassers …

Gender Reversals And Intertextuality In Tibullus, Erika Zimmerman Damer
Gender Reversals And Intertextuality In Tibullus, Erika Zimmerman Damer
Classical Studies Faculty Publications
This paper argues that Tibullus’ practice of altering the gender of his intertextual references destabilizes gender as a biological, social, and even grammatical category in his elegies. In 1.8, Tibullus draws on images of women’s adornment from Callimachus, Philitas, and Propertius to create the opening image of the puer Marathus. In 2.6, Tibullus draws from Catullus’ lament for his brother in carmen 101 as he describes Nemesis’ dead young sister and demonstrates his technical skill in manipulating the flexibility of grammatical gender in Latin.

Search Queries In An Information Retrieval System For Arabic-Language Texts, Zainab Majeed Albujasim
Search Queries In An Information Retrieval System For Arabic-Language Texts, Zainab Majeed Albujasim
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Information retrieval aims to extract from a large collection of data a subset of information that is relevant to user’s needs. In this study, we are interested in information retrieval in Arabic-Language text documents. We focus on the Arabic language, its morphological features that potentially impact the implementation and performance of an information retrieval system and its unique characters that are absent in the Latin alphabet and require specialized approaches. Specifically, we report on the design, implementation and evaluation of the search functionality using the Vector Space Model with several weighting schemes. Our implementation uses the ISRI stemming algorithms as …
Nuclei/Cell Detection In Microscopic Skeletal Muscle Fiber Images And Histopathological Brain Tumor Images Using Sparse Optimizations, Hai Su
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Nuclei/Cell detection is usually a prerequisite procedure in many computer-aided biomedical image analysis tasks. In this thesis we propose two automatic nuclei/cell detection frameworks. One is for nuclei detection in skeletal muscle fiber images and the other is for brain tumor histopathological images.
For skeletal muscle fiber images, the major challenges include: i) shape and size variations of the nuclei, ii) overlapping nuclear clumps, and iii) a series of z-stack images with out-of-focus regions. We propose a novel automatic detection algorithm consisting of the following components: 1) The original z-stack images are first converted into one all-in-focus image. 2) A …
Childhood Trauma, Self-Esteem, And Helping Behaviors: Does History Of Trauma Predict Helping?, Adriana B. Joseph
Childhood Trauma, Self-Esteem, And Helping Behaviors: Does History Of Trauma Predict Helping?, Adriana B. Joseph
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
There is insufficient evidence from the available research to fully determine the relationship between self-esteem and helping behaviors. Specifically, some findings indicate that those with lower self-esteem are less likely to help others than those with higher self-esteem (Michelini, Wilson, & Messe, 1975), while others show the opposite trend (Briggs, Landry, & Wood, 2007). Individuals with a history of childhood trauma are more likely to report low self-esteem than those with no history of childhood trauma (Valerio & Lepper, 2009); also, those with a history of trauma are more likely to help others (Frazier, Greer, Gabrielsen, Tennen, Park, & Tomlich, …

Articles
Twelve novel β-lactams were synthesised and their antiproliferative effects and binding affinity for the predominant isoforms of the estrogen receptor (ER), ERα and ERβ, were determined. β-Lactams 23 and 26 had the strongest binding affinities for ERα (IC50 values: 40 and 8 nM respectively) and ERβ (IC50 values: 19 and 15 nM). β-Lactam 26 was the most potent in antiproliferative assays using MCF-7 breast cancer cells, and further biochemical analysis showed that it caused accumulation of cells in G2/M phase (mitotic blockade) and depolymerisation of tubulin in MCF-7 cells. Compound 26 also induced apoptosis and downregulation …

In Vitro Oxygen Availability Modulates The Effect Of Artesunate On Hela Cells, James Murray, Sandra Gannan, Sarah Rawe, James Murphy
Articles
Background/Aim: Hypoxia can affect chemo - therapeutic drug efficacy in cancer patients, yet related in vitro assays in oxygen-rich environment remain the norm. Such levels are well beyond normoxic/hypoxic levels typically experienced by normal tissues/tumor masses. The present study evaluated how artesunate anti-tumor efficacy is modulated by oxygen availability in HeLa cells and its implications for future in vitro analyses. Materials and Methods: Real-time cell analysis was employed to evaluate HeLa cell toxicity to artesunate at 21%, 4% or 1% oxygen. Cell count analysis was performed to validate real-time data. Results: An increase in artesunate efficacy was observed when oxygen …
Warmikuna Juyayay! Ecuadorian And Latin American Indigenous Women Gaining Spaces In Ethnic Politics, Maria S. Moreno Parra

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
This research utilizes an agency framework to examine the complexities of the participation of indigenous women in local, national, and global spaces of activism. By examining the connections between processes of globalization of indigenous and women’s rights, development agendas, local politics, and gender dynamics in indigenous organizations, this research highlights the connection of ethnicity, gender, and power in an indigenous organization of Cotacachi, Ecuador, and for Ecuadorian and Latin American indigenous leaders and professionals working in national and global arenas.
Four interconnected topics are explored: (1) the understanding of indigenous women’s participation in the history of their organization within a …
Doc Of Bacteriophage P1 Is An Enzyme That Inhibits Translation And Phosphorylates A Protein Target, Stephanie Cale
Doc Of Bacteriophage P1 Is An Enzyme That Inhibits Translation And Phosphorylates A Protein Target, Stephanie Cale
Theses
Doc induces cell death by inhibiting translation; however, the mechanism of Doc-induced cell death and the cellular target of the toxin were unknown. One theory suggested that Doc inhibits translation elongation by binding directly to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Later evidence showed catalytic activity in distant homologs of Doc. These homologs contain a Fic-domain that has been shown to modify target GTPases by AMPylation and phosphocholination. Therefore, [35S] - Met, á[32P] - ATP, and ã[32P] - ATP were used in conjunction with an S30 extract to confirm that Doc inhibits translation, to assess the mechanism of modification, and to identify …
The Role Of The L4 Ribosomal Protein In The Expression Regulation Of Escherichia Coli Genes, Prativa Sharma
The Role Of The L4 Ribosomal Protein In The Expression Regulation Of Escherichia Coli Genes, Prativa Sharma
Theses
In bacterial cells, ribosomes synthesize proteins by translating messenger RNAs. Newly synthesized proteins travel out of translating ribosomes through a channel named peptide exit tunnel. Nucleotides of the 23S ribosomal RNA and amino acids residues of several ribosomal proteins are in the peptide exit tunnel. Regulatory nascent peptides interact with the components of the peptide exit tunnel affecting their own synthesis. These nascent peptides interact with a narrow region of the peptide exit tunnel, which is mostly comprised of amino acid residues of the L4 r-protein. The results of this study show that the L4 ribosomal protein is important in …
Literacy, Poverty, And Brain Development: Toward A New, Place-Based Educational Intervention, Michael R. Hilton
Literacy, Poverty, And Brain Development: Toward A New, Place-Based Educational Intervention, Michael R. Hilton
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
This paper provides an overview of emerging research focused on how living in an area of concentrated poverty can impact brain development and explores some possible applications of this research to education policy. One of the key findings is that state and federal policy-makers may need to adopt programs that integrate educational policy with housing and planning policy in order to protect and fulfill each child's educational rights. In order to impress upon readers the scale of the nation's current educational failures and the need for a significant change in policy, this paper first addresses adult illiteracy in the United …
Factors That Contribute To The Establishment Of Marine Protected Areas In Western Australia, Andrew Hill
Factors That Contribute To The Establishment Of Marine Protected Areas In Western Australia, Andrew Hill
Theses
Five Marine Protected Area (MPA) establishment processes undertaken between 1998 and 2012 in Western Australia were reviewed using a case study approach to identify factors affecting establishment. While three MPAs were legally created, two were not, despite significant investment in planning, research and public participation. Processes were generally influenced by complex local and strategic planning issues that were significant barriers to legal establishment.
Planning and public participation processes were generally successful at addressing local concerns, deriving consensus and building ownership but ineffectual at addressing key strategic issues. MPA establishment was primarily influenced by the social, economic and political influences rather …
The Psychology Of Groups, Donelson R. Forsyth
The Psychology Of Groups, Donelson R. Forsyth
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
This module assumes that a thorough understanding of people requires a thorough understanding of groups. Each of us is an autonomous individual seeking our own objectives, yet we are also members of groups—groups that constrain us, guide us, and sustain us. Just as each of us influences the group and the people in the group, so, too, do groups change each one of us. Joining groups satisfies our need to belong, gain information and understanding through social comparison, define our sense of self and social identity, and achieve goals that might elude us if we worked alone. Groups are also …
