Redefining Medical Necessity: A Consumer-Driven Solution To The U.S. Health Care Crisis, Ryan Abbott, Carl Stevens Jan 2014

Redefining Medical Necessity: A Consumer-Driven Solution To The U.S. Health Care Crisis, Ryan Abbott, Carl Stevens

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

The American health care system is plagued by high costs and poor public health outcomes, due in part to the overuse of costly diagnostic tests and treatments. In 2009, the Institute of Medicine estimated that unnecessary care wastes $750 billion, equivalent to about 30 percent of health care spending. Moreover, overtreatment can directly harm patients as a result of surgical complications, drug toxicity, and hospital-acquired infections. Yet while the problem of medical waste has long been recognized, solving the problem has proven elusive. In part, this difficulty is due to perverse economic incentives for physicians and hospitals, which still primarily …

The Genome Sequence Of A Widespread Apex Predator, The Golden Eagle (Aquila Chrysaetos), Jacqueline M. Doyle, Todd E. Katzner, Peter H. Bloom, Yanzhu Ji, Bhagya K. Wijayawardena, J Andrew Dewoody

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Biologists routinely use molecular markers to identify conservation units, to quantify genetic connectivity, to estimate population sizes, and to identify targets of selection. Many imperiled eagle populations require such efforts and would benefit from enhanced genomic resources. We sequenced, assembled, and annotated the first eagle genome using DNA from a male golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) captured in western North America. We constructed genomic libraries that were sequenced using Illumina technology and assembled the high-quality data to a depth of ∼40x coverage. The genome assembly includes 2,552 scaffolds >10 Kb and 415 scaffolds >1.2 Mb. We annotated 16,571 genes that are …

Matrix Models For Size-Structured Populations: Unrealistic Fast Growth Or Simply Diffusion?, Nicolas Picard, Jingjing Liang Jan 2014

Matrix Models For Size-Structured Populations: Unrealistic Fast Growth Or Simply Diffusion?, Nicolas Picard, Jingjing Liang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Matrix population models are widely used to study population dynamics but have been criticized because their outputs are sensitive to the dimension of the matrix (or, equivalently, to the class width). This sensitivity is concerning for the population growth rate () because this is an intrinsic characteristic of the population that should not depend on the model specification. It has been suggested that the sensitivity of to matrix dimension was linked to the existence of fast pathways (i.e. the fraction of individuals that systematically move up a class), whose proportion increases when class width increases. We showed that for matrix …

Should All Drugs Be Patentable?: A Comparative Perspective, Cynthia M. Ho Jan 2014

Should All Drugs Be Patentable?: A Comparative Perspective, Cynthia M. Ho

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Although there has been substantial discussion of the proper scope of patentable subject matter in recent years, drugs have been overlooked. This Article begins to address that gap with a comparative perspective. In particular, this Article considers what is permissible under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), as well as how India and Canada have utilized TRIPS flexibilities in different ways to properly reward developers of valuable new drugs, while also considering the social harm of higher prices beyond an initial patent term on drugs.

This Article brings valuable insight into this area at a critical …

A Mixed-Methods Comparison Of Standards-Based And Traditional Gradebooks In One High School, Kevin P. Mabie Jan 2014

A Mixed-Methods Comparison Of Standards-Based And Traditional Gradebooks In One High School, Kevin P. Mabie

Dissertations

Online gradebooks have gradually become a staple of schools in the 21st century. Students and parents have immediate access to grades, and the composition of these grades is transparent. While the purpose of the online gradebook may have initially been for the conveniences such systems offer the school and its stakeholders, it has also served as a catalyst for gradebook reform. Gradebook construction strategies have been called into question, and solutions which allow gradebooks to provide more accurate and specific information have been developed. This study explored student learning growth through the use of two different online gradebooks: a traditionally …

Biological Aging And Peer Victimization: The Role Of Social Support In Telomere Length And Health Outcomes, Maria Elizabeth Guarneri-White Jan 2014

Biological Aging And Peer Victimization: The Role Of Social Support In Telomere Length And Health Outcomes, Maria Elizabeth Guarneri-White

Psychology Theses - Archive

The health benefits of social support have been well documented in the literature (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Newman & Roberts, 2013), as have the somatic and psychological outcomes of being the victim of bullying (Wang, Nansel, & Iannotti, 2011; Knack, Jensen-Campbell, & Baum, 2011). Recent research has looked at the separate role each of these interpersonal processes play in cellular aging via the study of telomeres, which are the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division (Epel, 2009). Data indicate that stress can accelerate this shortening, leading to premature cell death and a shortened …

Abortion, Religion, And The Accusation Of Establishment: A Critique Of Justice Stevens’ Opinions In Thornburgh, Webster, And Casey, John M. Breen

Faculty Publications & Other Works

It is commonplace to characterize legal arguments in favor of protecting the human embryo or fetus as “inherently religious” such that laws embodying this point of view constitute an establishment of religion in violation of the First Amendment. The practical effect of this argumentative strategy is to foreclose substantive debate on the issue of the legal status of the unborn – to preclude from consideration an entire point of view and so win an argument without ever really having one.

This claim has a long pedigree, tracing back to the founding of NARAL and Lawrence Lader’s “Catholic strategy.” Its most …

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoa Leishmania. These organisms secrete acid phosphatases during their growth cycle as an important part of cell targeting to host macrophage cells thus allowing for a successful infection. Secreted acid phosphatases (SAP) are reported to play a significant role in the survival of Leishmania cells, thus evaluation of these enzymes is of interest. The inhibition of SAP can be the focus of a new drug therapy. We tested for SAP activity from Leishmania tarentolae following the addition of a series of vanadium complexes including decavanadate. Cell cultures at different stages in their …

Influence Of Marianismo On Colorectal Cancer Screening Behavior Among Hispanic Women In The United States, Robin Thompson

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States (U.S).1 Although early detection and treatment can reduce CRC-related morbidity and mortality, almost twothirds of patients are diagnosed with advanced stage disease indicating non-adherence to recommended screening guidelines.1 Indeed, less than half of individuals over 50 years of age get screened at recommended intervals.2 More specifically, lower rates of CRC screening exist among these groups: those identifying as being of Hispanic origin, the uninsured, disabled individuals, and women.3 In a 2011 report from the National Center on Health …

Association Of Hiv Testing, Educational Attainment, And Age Among Black And Non-Black Men, Ashley N. Martell

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection can lead to a chronic condition, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), but can be well managed with a combination of medications, treatments, and remedies.1 The emergence of HIV in the United States in 1981 created an atmosphere unlike any other at that time. Overtime, the science community has worked diligently to combat this disease through research, practice, and intervention. Although many efforts have been put forth over the past thirty years, millions of Americans still remain infected with HIV.2 Among those who are infected with HIV/AIDS we see disproportionate rates among specific races and gender. Research …

Faults Identification In Three-Phase Induction Motors Using Support Vector Machines, Rama Hammo Jan 2014

Faults Identification In Three-Phase Induction Motors Using Support Vector Machines, Rama Hammo

Master of Technology Management Plan II Graduate Projects

Induction motor is one of the most important motors used in industrial applications. The operating conditions may sometime lead the machine into different fault situations. The main types of external faults experienced by these motors are over loading, single phasing, unbalanced supply voltage, locked rotor, phase reversal, ground fault, under voltage and over voltage. The machine should be shut down when a fault is experienced to avoid damage and for the safety of the workers. Computer based relays monitor the machine and disconnect it during the faults. The relay logic used to identify these faults requires sophisticated signal processing techniques …

What’S Love Got To Do With Lawyers? Thoughts On Relationality, Love, And Lawyers’ Work, Eli Wald, Russell G. Pearce Jan 2014

What’S Love Got To Do With Lawyers? Thoughts On Relationality, Love, And Lawyers’ Work, Eli Wald, Russell G. Pearce

Faculty Scholarship

In a new and provocative book, Rob Vischer has challenged the neutral partisan conception of the lawyer and the legal profession’s reductive presumption that all clients wish to pursue atomistic self-interest irrespective of the consequences to others. Vischer’s use of the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr. and of Christian theology as a foundation for an alternative, and richly relational, account of law practice is both inspiring and effective.

To debunk the presumption that clients seek narrow self-interest, which the book argues is a powerful component of the neutral partisan conception, Vischer compellingly asserts that clients are relational beings often …

Shadow Work In Support Of The Adult Developmental Journey, Robin Gregory Mclaughlin Jan 2014

Shadow Work In Support Of The Adult Developmental Journey, Robin Gregory Mclaughlin

Educational Studies Dissertations

In his book, In over our heads: the mental demands of modern life, Kegan (1994) has suggested that the average level of adults’ thinking is more complex today than at previous times in history. This is due, in part, to our increased lifespans, which have enabled complex thinking to evolve and emerge. However, Kegan has also suggested that the demands of the social environment are expanding much faster than the average complexity of adult thinking and learning. In Kegan’s terms, we are “in over our heads.” Using a semi-clinical, semi-structured, qualitative interview with twenty adult learners, this study investigated the …

Mechanomyographic Parameter Extraction Methods: An Appraisal For Clinical Applications, Morufu Olusola Ibitoye, Nur Azah Hamzaid, Jorge M. Zuniga, Nazirah Hasnan, Ahmad Khairi Abdul Wahab

Journal Articles

The research conducted in the last three decades has collectively demonstrated that the skeletal muscle performance can be alternatively assessed by mechanomyographic signal (MMG) parameters. Indices of muscle performance, not limited to force, power, work, endurance and the related physiological processes underlying muscle activities during contraction have been evaluated in the light of the signal features. As a non-stationary signal that reflects several distinctive patterns of muscle actions, the illustrations obtained from the literature support the reliability of MMG in the analysis of muscles under voluntary and stimulus evoked contractions. An appraisal of the standard practice including the measurement theories …

Identifying Aging-Related Genes In Mouse Hippocampus Using Gateway Nodes, Kathryn Dempsey Cooper, Hesham Ali Jan 2014

Identifying Aging-Related Genes In Mouse Hippocampus Using Gateway Nodes, Kathryn Dempsey Cooper, Hesham Ali

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications

Background: High-throughput studies continue to produce volumes of metadata representing valuable sources of information to better guide biological research. With a stronger focus on data generation, analysis models that can readily identify actual signals have not received the same level of attention. This is due in part to high levels of noise and data heterogeneity, along with a lack of sophisticated algorithms for mining useful information. Networks have emerged as a powerful tool for modeling high-throughput data because they are capable of representing not only individual biological elements but also different types of relationships en masse. Moreover, well-established graph …
