Feeding Ecology Of The Sandbar Shark In South Carolina Estuaries Revealed Through Δ13c And Δ15n Stable Isotope Analysis, David S. Shiffman, Bryan S. Frazier, John R. Kucklick, Daniel Abel, Jay Brandes, Gorka Sancho
Marine Science
Abstract: Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) from muscle samples were used to examine the feeding ecology of a heavily exploited shark species, the Sandbar Shark Carcharhinus plumbeus. Two hundred and sixty two Sandbar Sharks were sampled in five South Carolina estuaries. There were no significant differences in average δ13C or δ15N signatures between estuaries, between sampling years, or between male and female Sandbar Sharks, suggesting that these variables do not affect diet. A potential ontogenetic diet shift between young-of-year and juvenile Sandbar Sharks in South Carolina, similar …

Brownfield Action (BA) is a web-based environmental site assessment (ESA) simulation in which students form geotechnical consulting companies and work together to solve problems in environmental forensics. Developed at Barnard College with the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning, BA has been disseminated to ten colleges, universities, and high schools, resulting in a collaborative network of educators. The experiences of current users are presented describing how they have incorporated the BA curriculum into their courses, as well as how BA affected teaching and learning. The experiences demonstrate that BA can be used in whole or in part, is …
Communicative Universal Convertibility Matter-Energy-Information, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu
Communicative Universal Convertibility Matter-Energy-Information, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The research aims to reveal and prove the thesis of the neutral and convertibility relationship between constituent constructive elements of the universe: matter, energy and information. The approach perspective is a computationally-communicative-neutrosophic one. We configure a coherent and cohesive ideation line. Matter, energy and information are fundamental elements of the world. Among them, there is an inextricable multiple, elastic and evolutionary connection. The elements are defined by the connections between them. Our hypothesis is that the relationship between matter, energy and information is a neutral one. This relationship is not required by the evidence. At this level, it does not …

The Law Of War And The Responsibility To Protect Civilians: A Reinterpretation, Thomas H. Lee
The Law Of War And The Responsibility To Protect Civilians: A Reinterpretation, Thomas H. Lee
Faculty Scholarship
Two seemingly unrelated crises implicating the law of war and the responsibility to protect civilians have arisen in recent years. In 2013, the United States considered military intervention without United Nations (“U.N.”) Security Council preapproval in Syria after discovering that the government had exterminated its own people with chemical agents. In 2014, Russia sent troops into Crimea, a part of Ukraine, to protect ethnic Russians that Russia claimed were in danger after a political coup in the country. In both cases, the military acts contemplated or undertaken were of dubious legality, albeit under different rubrics. This Article aims to show …

The Role Of Gene Regulation In Cancer: Studies Of Cancer-Related Phenotypes Mediated By Mex3d And By Microrna-618 Implicate Their Potential Oncogenic Role, Travis Whitfill
Public Health Theses
The control of gene expression is pivotal in the context of molecular pathogenesis of a number of diseases, and thus is of critical relevance to public health. An array of cellular tools exist in controlling gene expression, including epigenetic effects, non-coding RNAs, and RNA-binding proteins. These tools are critical to the modern study of public health, and are used in tandem with population-based studies. This work focuses on specific examples of non-coding RNAs and RNA-binding proteins, describing the effects of microRNA-618, a non-coding RNA, and MEX3D, a post-transcriptional regulator, in cancer.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) form a class of highly conserved endogenous …

Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen
Evidence For Selection Acting On Immune-Related Iron Transport Genes In Wild Rodents, Dylan Adam Duchen
Public Health Theses
Every organism requires certain resources that they cannot endogenously produce; one such dietary component, iron, is essential for many basic cellular functions and the host-immune response. By studying patterns of genetic diversity within the genes involved in immune-related iron transport we can achieve a greater understanding of the evolutionary mechanisms which drive these processes, including those underlying host-pathogen interactions.
This thesis describes further evidence of patterns indicative of positive selection within apical regions of the transferrin receptor complex (Tfr1), sites known to be involved in an evolutionary arms race with pathogens, within two rodent species endemic to Europe and Asia, …
Variations In Semen Sample Parameters Among Men In A Fertility Clinic: Implications For Reproducibility In Epidemiologic Studies, Regina Esenam Edifor
Variations In Semen Sample Parameters Among Men In A Fertility Clinic: Implications For Reproducibility In Epidemiologic Studies, Regina Esenam Edifor
Public Health Theses
BACKGROUND: In population studies, one semen sample is usually collected per individual but in clinical settings it is recommended that multiple semen samples are collected per individual for analysis. The goal of this study is to estimate the size of within-person variability in semen quality parameters with the ultimate goal of figuring out how many repeat samples are needed in a semen quality study to represent this. We will also investigate how accurately one can predict semen parameter values for an individual using the long-term average as a standard.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that a maximum of 2 semen samples has …
Between Saviors And Savages: The Effect Of Turkey's Revised Penal Code On The Transformation Of Honor Killings Into Honor Suicides And Why Community Discourse Is Necessary For Honor Crime Education, Bethany A. Corbin
Emory International Law Review
Honor killings and honor suicides are culturally motivated causes of deaths of women in Turkey. These honor crimes occur after a family member violates a social or moral norm, such as premarital relationship, that brings shame and dishonor to the family. Both the Turkish media and general scholarship on honor killings argue that due to the revised Turkish Penal Code of 2004, which increased sentences for honor killing perpetrators and their family members, families have shifted from honor killings to honor suicides, encouraging the females to take their own lives as to minimize the penalization. This article seeks to rebut …

For organisms with complex life cycles, larval environments can modify adult phenotypes. For mosquitoes and other vectors, when physiological impacts of stressors acting on larvae carry over into the adult stage they may interact with infectious dose of a vector-borne pathogen, producing a range of phenotypes for vector potential. Investigation of impacts of a common source of stress, larval crowding and intraspecific competition, on adult vector interactions with pathogens may increase our understanding of the dynamics of pathogen transmission by mosquito vectors. Using Aedes aegypti and the nematode parasite Brugia pahangi, we demonstrate dose dependency of fitness effects of …

Phylogenomic Analyses Support The Bifurcation Of Ciliates Into Two Major Clades That Differ In Properties Of Nuclear Division, Feng Gao, Laura A. Katz
Phylogenomic Analyses Support The Bifurcation Of Ciliates Into Two Major Clades That Differ In Properties Of Nuclear Division, Feng Gao, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Ciliates are a diverse assemblage of eukaryotes that have been the source of many discoveries including self-splicing RNAs, telomeres and trans-splicing. While analyses of ciliate morphology have given rise to robust hypotheses on relatively shallow level relationships, the deeper evolutionary history of ciliates is largely unknown. This is in part because studies to date have focused on only a single locus, small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU-rDNA). In the present study, we use a taxon-rich strategy based on multiple loci from GenBank and recently completed transcriptomes to assess deep phylogenetic relationships among ciliates. Our phylogenomic data set includes up to 537 …
Genome Structure Drives Patterns Of Gene Family Evolution In Ciliates, A Case Study Using Chilodonella Uncinata (Protista, Ciliophora, Phyllopharyngea), Feng Gao, Weibo Song, Laura A. Katz
Genome Structure Drives Patterns Of Gene Family Evolution In Ciliates, A Case Study Using Chilodonella Uncinata (Protista, Ciliophora, Phyllopharyngea), Feng Gao, Weibo Song, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
In most lineages, diversity among gene family members results from gene duplication followed by sequence divergence. Because of the genome rearrangements during the development of somatic nuclei, gene family evolution in ciliates involves more complex processes. Previous work on the ciliate Chilodonella uncinata revealed that macronuclear β-tubulin gene family members are generated by alternative processing, in which germline regions are alternatively used in multiple macronuclear chromosomes. To further study genome evolution in this ciliate, we analyzed its transcriptome and found that (1) alternative processing is extensive among gene families; and (2) such gene families are likely to be C. uncinata …
The Dynamic Nature Of Genomes Across The Tree Of Life, Angela M. Oliverio, Laura A. Katz
The Dynamic Nature Of Genomes Across The Tree Of Life, Angela M. Oliverio, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Genomes are dynamic in lineages across the tree of life. Among bacteria and archaea, for example, DNA content varies through out life cycles, and nonbinary cell division in diverse lineages indicates the need for coordination of the inheritance of genomes. These observations contrast with the textbook view that bacterial and archaeal genomes are monoploid (i.e., single copied) and fixed both within species and throughout an individual's lifetime. Here, we synthesize information on three aspects of dynamic genomes from exemplars representing a diverse array of bacterial and archaeal lineages: 1) ploidy level variation, 2) epigenetic mechanisms, and 3) life cycle variation. …
Characterization Of The Life Cycle And Heteromeric Nature Of The Macronucleus Of The Ciliate Chilodonella Uncinata Using Fuorescence Microscopy, Laure Bellec, Xyrus X. Maurer-Alcala, Laura A. Katz
Characterization Of The Life Cycle And Heteromeric Nature Of The Macronucleus Of The Ciliate Chilodonella Uncinata Using Fuorescence Microscopy, Laure Bellec, Xyrus X. Maurer-Alcala, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Only a limited number of studies exist on the life cycles of nonmodel ciliates such as Chilodonella uncinata (Cl: Phyllopharyngea). The handful of papers on this taxon indicate the presence of a heteromeric macronucleus, marked by separate DNA-rich and DNA-poor regions. Here, we study the life cycle of C. uncinata using confocal laser scanning microscopy with 4′,6-diamidino-2- phenylindole staining, which allows us to differentiate nuclear dynamics of the micronucleus and the macronucleus during life-cycle stages. We photo-documented various stages and confirmed aspects of the development of the new macronucleus previously characterized by electron microscopy. We further reveal the heteromeric structure …
