An Expanding Human Rights Corpus: Sexual Minority Rights As International Human Rights, Xavier B. Lutchmie Persad
An Expanding Human Rights Corpus: Sexual Minority Rights As International Human Rights, Xavier B. Lutchmie Persad
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that sexual minorities are entitled to equal rights under principles of human dignity, equality, and non-discrimination. While international human rights frameworks like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and regional systems, particularly the European Union’s Charter of Fundamental Rights, provide some protections, sexual minorities remain vulnerable due to the lack of explicit inclusion in most treaties. The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) have advanced protections through jurisprudence, but significant gaps persist, especially for transgender and intersex individuals. The article advocates for a specialized treaty to address these disparities …
Twilight: The Unveiling Of Victims, Stalking, And Domestic Violence, Susan L. Brody
Twilight: The Unveiling Of Victims, Stalking, And Domestic Violence, Susan L. Brody
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article critically examines the Twilight saga, arguing that it romanticizes stalking, domestic violence, and controlling relationships by framing them as acts of love. Bella, the protagonist, is portrayed as a victim who idealizes these harmful behaviors, making her a problematic role model for young women. The series, while a fantasy, perpetuates dangerous stereotypes and normalizes violence in relationships, influencing works like Fifty Shades of Grey and impacting young audiences' perceptions of love and control.
Structures And Strategies For Science Teacher Education In The 21st Century, Douglas Larkin
Structures And Strategies For Science Teacher Education In The 21st Century, Douglas Larkin
Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works
In order to determine the ways in which teacher preparation programs will need to change in order to meet the needs of preparing STEM teachers in the near future, it is necessary to ascertain what STEM teacher preparation programs are actually doing in the present. This article presents a comparative analysis of six different science teacher education pathways in order to portray, compare, and contrast the structures and strategies used by each. The central premise is that there is much to learn from what is already being done in this field from the different visions of science teacher education currently …

Importance Of Bacillithiol In The Oxidative Stress Response Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Ana C. Posada, Stacey L. Kolar, Renata G. Dusi, Patrica Francois
Dartmouth Scholarship
In Staphylococcus aureus, the low-molecular-weight thiol called bacillithiol (BSH), together with cognate S-transferases, is believed to be the counterpart to the glutathione system of other organisms. To explore the physiological role of BSH in S. aureus, we constructed mutants with the deletion of bshA (sa1291), which encodes the glycosyltransferase that catalyzes the first step of BSH biosynthesis, and fosB (sa2124), which encodes a BSH-S-transferase that confers fosfomycin resistance, in several S. aureus strains, including clinical isolates. Mutation of fosB or bshA caused a 16- to 60-fold reduction in fosfomycin resistance in these S. aureus strains. High-pressure liquid chromatography analysis, which …

In Vitro Culture Of Bovine Preantral Follicles: A Review, Valdevane R Araújo, Melba O Gastal, José R Figueiredo, Eduardo L Gastal
Peer-reviewed Articles
Preantral follicles are the majority of the ovarian follicle population and their use as a source of homogeneous oocytes for bovine reproductive biotechnologies could result in a substantial advance in this field. However, while in other species embryos and offspring have been produced, in bovine species the results have been limited to the follicular activation of small (primordial) preantral follicles and formation of early antral follicles from large (secondary) preantral follicles after in vitro culture. Therefore, this review will highlight the basic aspects of bovine folliculogenesis by focusing on preantral follicles, the methods of harvesting preantral follicles, the main results …

Simulating Univariate And Multivariate Tukey G-And-H Distributions Based On The Method Of Percentiles, Tzu Chun Kuo, Todd C. Headrick
Publications
This paper derives closed-form solutions for the 𝑔-and-ℎ shape parameters associated with the Tukey family of distributions based on the method of percentiles (MOP). A proposed MOP univariate procedure is described and compared with the method of moments (MOM) in the context of distribution fitting and estimating skew and kurtosis functions. The MOP methodology is also extended from univariate to multivariate data generation. A procedure is described for simulating nonnormal distributions with specified Spearman correlations. TheMOP procedure has an advantage over theMOMbecause it does not require numerical integration to compute intermediate correlations. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposedMOP procedure is …

Rafflesia is a genus of holoparasitic plants endemic to Southeast Asia that has lost the ability to undertake photosynthesis. With short-read sequencing technology, we assembled a draft sequence of the mitochondrial genome of Rafflesia lagascae Blanco, a species endemic to the Philippine island of Luzon, with ∼350× sequencing depth coverage. Using multiple approaches, however, we were only able to identify small fragments of plastid sequences at low coverage depth (

Fertility is dependent on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Each component of this axis is essential for normal reproductive function. Mice with a mutation in the forkhead transcription factor gene, Foxp3, exhibit autoimmunity and infertility. We have previously shown that Foxp3 mutant mice have significantly reduced expression of pituitary gonadotropins. To address the role of Foxp3 in gonadal function, we examined the gonadal phenotype of these mice. Foxp3 mutant mice have significantly reduced seminal vesicle and testis weights compared with Foxp3(+/Y) littermates. Spermatogenesis in Foxp3 mutant males is arrested prior to spermatid elongation. Activation of luteinizing hormone signaling in Foxp3 mutant mice …

Quantitative Trait Loci Underlying Partial Resistance To Cercospora Sojina Race 2 Detected In Soybean Seedlings In Greenhouse Assays, Hemlata Sharma, David A. Lightfoot
Articles
Cercospora sojina (Hara), an air-borne pathogen, infects soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] leaves causing frog-eye leaf spot (FLS). Three major genes (Rcs1-3) underlie resistance to the major races of FLS but two were not yet mapped. In addition quantitative trait loci provide partial resistance to many strains. FLS race 2 was an isolate first collected in the 1950’s when damaging FLS first arose. ‘Essex’ was partially resistant while ‘Forrest’ was partially susceptible to mixed races of FLS. The objective here was to identify quantitative trait loci underlying resistance to FLS race 2 in the greenhouse using recombinant inbred lines (RILs) …
Designing And Constructing Commercial Agreements In The 21st Century, Jeffrey Ritter
Designing And Constructing Commercial Agreements In The 21st Century, Jeffrey Ritter
St. Thomas Law Review
In the 21s century, commercial agreements crafted by attorneys structure relationships in which the administration and execution of those relationships is largely, if not exclusively, governed through the use of digital technologies. These technologies communicate information, record and report activities taken by the parties in furtherance of their relationship, make payments of monies and other compensation, and provide the evidence with which disputes among the parties will be resolved. All of these functions are designed and executed through technology systems that monitor and record activities that are the basis for determining compliance with the requirements of those agreements at a …

The Creatures We “Assessinate”: Mental Testing As Science Fiction In Chicago Public High Schools In 1909, Clayton Funk
The Creatures We “Assessinate”: Mental Testing As Science Fiction In Chicago Public High Schools In 1909, Clayton Funk
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This article tracks the development of what educators and psychologists, in 1909, termed “mental testing” in relation to art education in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). According to CPS Superintendent Edwin G. Cooley (1857-1923) American civilization was in trouble due to the influx of Southern and Eastern European immigrants in Chicago. He and other educators sought to ward off the social collapse they feared with the efficiency of science. As part of what Sol Cohen termed the “medicalization of education,” Chicago’s Department of Child Study tested students for mental capacity and those considered less intelligence were placed in technical classes, while …

Energy Transfer In A Discrete, Soluble Heterobimetallic Complex Containing Tb3+ And Eu3+, Nikhil Kumar Barua
Energy Transfer In A Discrete, Soluble Heterobimetallic Complex Containing Tb3+ And Eu3+, Nikhil Kumar Barua
Wayne State University Theses
A discrete, heterobimetallic Tb3+-Eu3+ -containing complex has been synthesized, and energy transfer was observed in the complex without using an antenna. This result represents a new way of observing lanthanide emission using lanthanide excitation in discrete, soluble complex. The occurrence of energy transfer in the mixed heterobimetallic Tb3+-Eu3+ complex was characterized using steady state luminescence spectroscopy and luminescence-decay studies. These findings are likely to be useful for fundamental mechanistic studies of energy transfer in lanthanide-containing systems.

The Impact Of Down Syndrome And Folate Depletion On Genomic Stabilizing Pathways Of Lymphoblastoid Cells, Khadijah Ibrahim Alnabbat
Wayne State University Theses
Understanding the role of nutrition plays in Down syndrome (DS) could help in the development and implementation of strategies that help overcome the negative consequences phenotypes of Down syndrome. Conserving genome integrity is crucial for cells to survive, and thus understanding how genetic defects induce damage to genomic DNA and impair subsequent repair of this damage is important. Evidence accumulated points to increased DNA damage and mutation accumulation associated with a decline in DNA repair capacity, Base Excision Repair (BER) in particular. Thus, the successful clinical management of DS resides in understanding the metabolic imbalance provoked by overexpression of genes …

Cancers are one of the leading causes of death in United States, effecting roughly 20% of the population. To develop effective anti-cancer agents, vast research is in progress that targets various factors leading to cancer. One such area of cancer research is developing drugs that inhibit histone deacetylase (HDAC) proteins. HDACs are histone modifying enzymes that regulate transcription of genes. Aberrant recruitment of HDACs to the transcription factors leads to tumor onset and growth. Because of their potential anti-cancer therapeutic interest, several HDAC inhibitors are in various stages of clinical trials. SAHA and Romidepsin are FDA-approved drugs for the treatment …

Hiv-1 Rna Dimerization At Single Molecule Level, Hansini R. Mundigala
Hiv-1 Rna Dimerization At Single Molecule Level, Hansini R. Mundigala
Wayne State University Dissertations
The Dimerization Initiation Sequence (DIS) is a conserved hairpin-loop motif on the 5' UTR of the HIV-1 genome. It plays an important role in genome dimerization through formation of a "kissing complex" intermediate between two homologous DIS sequences. This bimolecular kissing complex ultimately leads to the formation of an extended RNA duplex. Understanding the kinetics of this interaction is key to exploiting DIS as a possible drug target against HIV. We wish to report a novel study that makes an important contribution to understanding the dimerization mechanism of HIV-1 RNA in vitro. Our work has employed single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy …

The Movement Of Escherichia Coli And Enterococci Among Beach Sand, Lyngbya Wollei, And The Water Column: Implications For Human Health, Krystal Ann Bakkila
Wayne State University Theses
Occurrence of the filamentous cyanobacteria Lyngbya wollei has become an increasing concern in the Great Lakes region. Prior to the early 1900's, L. wollei had been occasionally documented in the Great Lakes region, but in the last decade it has been observed with increasing frequency. In the Great Lakes L. wollei has been proliferating, fragmenting, and accumulating ashore, where it decays forming thick detrital mats harboring potentially harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli and enterococci. While the filamentous green algae species Cladophora glomerata has been well studied in this region, very little research has been done on the cyanobacteria L. …

Species - Dependent Cardiac And Motor Responses To Cholinergic Stimulation In Daphnia Pulex And Daphnia Magna, Bryan James Hannan
Wayne State University Theses
The role of acetylcholine (ACh) in regulating the activity of the heart and `feeding current' driven by the beating thoracic appendages of Daphnia pulex and Daphnia magna was evaluated using acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChE-I) and muscarinic receptor agonists. Single animals, tethered to a stainless steel pin, were tested in a watertight aquatic chamber that allowed free movement of appendages and swimming antennae. Heart contraction rate and the rate of thoracic appendage beating were quantified optically by measuring fluctuating changes in light-intensity caused by movement. Physostigmine, neostigmine, oxotremorine, pilocarpine as well as nicotine were used to study ACh and AChE. Atropine was …
Effects Of Statin Drugs And Tocotrienol Rich Fraction Supplementation In Chronic Hemodialysis Patients And Metabolomic Profile, Eno Latifi
Wayne State University Theses
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is known as a heterogeneous disorder which currently is on the rise and lately has been classified as a public health issues in the United State and worldwide. CKD is an irreversible and progressive disease which can lead to kidney failure, and this is depicted by the advanced stage of the disorder when it reaches the point, that is classified as end stage of renal disease (ESRD) (Stage 5 of CKD) (eGRF <15 mL/min/ 1.73 m2 working capacity), where both organs are in a total or permanent kidney failure. End-Stage renal disease patients, on hemodialysis have been associated to experience an accelerated form of atherosclerosis, which is induced by inflammation, impairment of antioxidant system and elevated oxidative stress. Since the problem effecting ESRD patients is multifactorial, the objective of this investigation is to explore and look at the effects of supplementing with vitamin E-tocotrienol rich fraction (TRF), a micronutrient which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid lower capabilities into tackling these comorbid conditions experienced by this population. Therefore the aims of this investigation will be to explore changes in lipid profiles, inflammatory markers, and oxidative status, as well as look at any changes in metabolomic profiles. It was hypothesized that by supplementing with TRF a vitamin E, for 16 weeks in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis, it may help reverse and/or improve, oxidative status, inflammatory markers, increase antioxidants status and improve lipid profiles.
The study was double-blinded, randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled design trial, of 81 adult patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis at Great Lake Dialysis Clinic, Detroit MI, where …
