Spatiotemporal Characterization Of Sclerotinia Crown Rot Epidemics In Pyrethrum, Jason B. Scott, David H. Gent, Sarah J. Pethybridge, Frank S. Hay Jan 2014

Spatiotemporal Characterization Of Sclerotinia Crown Rot Epidemics In Pyrethrum, Jason B. Scott, David H. Gent, Sarah J. Pethybridge, Frank S. Hay

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Sclerotinia crown rot, caused by Sclerotinia minor and S. sclerotiorum, is a disease of pyrethrum in Australia that may cause substantial decline in plant density. The spatiotemporal characteristics of the disease were quantified in 14 fields during three growing seasons. Fitting the binary power law to disease incidence provided slope (b = 1.063) and intercept (ln(Ap) = 0.669) estimates significantly (P ≤ 0.0001) greater than 1 and 0, respectively, indicating spatial aggregation at the sampling unit scale that was dependent upon disease incidence. Covariate analyses indicated that application of fungicides did not significantly influence these …

Microclimatic Performance Of A Free-Air Warming And Co2 Enrichment Experiment In Windy Wyoming, Usa, Daniel Lecain, David Smith, Jack Morgan, Bruce A. Kimball, Elise Pendall, Franco Miglietta

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In order to plan for global changing climate experiments are being conducted in many countries, but few have monitored the effects of the climate change treatments (warming, elevated CO2) on the experimental plot microclimate. During three years of an eight year study with year-round feedback-controlled infra-red heater warming (1.5/3.0°C day/night) and growing season free-air CO2 enrichment (600 ppm) in the mixed-grass prairie of Wyoming, USA, we monitored soil, leaf, canopy-air, above-canopy-air temperatures and relative humidity of control and treated experimental plots and evaluated ecologically important temperature differentials. Leaves were warmed somewhat less than the target settings (1.1 …

Elevated Co2 Further Lengthens Growing Season Under Warming Conditions, Melissa Reyes-Fox, Heidi Steltzer, M. J. Trlica, Gregory S. Mcmaster, Allan A. Andales, Dan R. Lecain, Jack A. Morgan

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Observations of a longer growing season through earlier plant growth in temperate to polar regions have been thought to be a response to climate warming. However, data from experimental warming studies indicate that many species that initiate leaf growth and flowering earlier also reach seed maturation and senesce earlier, shortening their active and reproductive periods. A conceptual model to explain this apparent contradiction, and an analysis of the effect of elevated CO2—which can delay annual life cycle events—on changing season length, have not been tested. Here we show that experimental warming in a temperate grassland led to a …

Climatic stress such as warming would alter physiological pathways in plants leading to changes in tissue chemistry. Elevated CO2 could partly mitigate warming induced moisture stress, and the degree of this mitigation may vary with plant functional types. We studied the composition of structural and non-structural metabolites in senesced tissues of Bouteloua gracilis (C4) and Pascopyrum smithii (C3) at the Prairie Heating and CO2 Enrichment experiment, Wyoming, USA. We hypothesized that P. smithii and B. gracilis would respond to unfavorable global change factors by producing structural metabolites and osmoregulatory compounds that are necessary to combat stress. However, due …

Long-Term Exposure To Elevated Co2 Enhances Plant Community Stability By Suppressing Dominant Plant Species In A Mixed-Grass Prairie, Tamara Jane Zelikova, Dana M. Blumenthal, David G. Williams, Lara Souza, Daniel R. Lecain, Jack Morgan, Elise Pendall Jan 2014

Long-Term Exposure To Elevated Co2 Enhances Plant Community Stability By Suppressing Dominant Plant Species In A Mixed-Grass Prairie, Tamara Jane Zelikova, Dana M. Blumenthal, David G. Williams, Lara Souza, Daniel R. Lecain, Jack Morgan, Elise Pendall

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Climate controls vegetation distribution across the globe, and some vegetation types are more vulnerable to climate change, whereas others are more resistant. Because resistance and resilience can influence ecosystem stability and determine how communities and ecosystems respond to climate change, we need to evaluate the potential for resistance as we predict future ecosystem function. In a mixed-grass prairie in the northern Great Plains, we used a large field experiment to test the effects of elevated CO2, warming, and summer irrigation on plant community structure and productivity, linking changes in both to stability in plant community composition and biomass …

It's Complicated: Age, Gender, And Lifetime Discrimination Against Working Women - The United States And The U.K. As Examples, Susan Bisom-Rapp, Malcolm Sargeant Jan 2014

It's Complicated: Age, Gender, And Lifetime Discrimination Against Working Women - The United States And The U.K. As Examples, Susan Bisom-Rapp, Malcolm Sargeant

Faculty Scholarship

This article considers the effect on women of a lifetime of discrimination using material from both the U.S. and the U.K. Government reports in both countries make clear that women workers suffer from multiple disadvantages during their working lives, which result in significantly poorer outcomes in old age when compared to men. Indeed, the numbers are stark. In the U.S., for example, the poverty rate of women 65 years old and up is nearly double that of their male counterparts. Older women of color are especially disadvantaged. The situation in the U.K. is comparable.

To capture the phenomenon, the article …

The Separation Of Politics And Science, Joanna K. Sax Jan 2014

The Separation Of Politics And Science, Joanna K. Sax

Faculty Scholarship

This article proposes that scientific inquiry regarding questions of fact should have an autonomous zone that is protected from politics. Although many scholars promote the idea that science is politicized, little empirical data exists to support this conclusion. This article contains an empirical study that demonstrates that the public received inaccurate information in the debate over a highly politicized and controversial area of scientific inquiry, embryonic stem cell research.

This article utilizes the data from the empirical study and public choice theory to explain that there are process defects; this economic model can help explain, but cannot be used to …

Marriage Equality Is Both Feminist And Progressive, Barbara Cox Jan 2014

Marriage Equality Is Both Feminist And Progressive, Barbara Cox

Faculty Scholarship

Marriage equality has the ability to lessen vulnerability for society’s most needy. This article discusses two aspects of marriage equality in particular. Part II discusses why marriage equality can be feminist in practice and why obtaining marriage equality for same-sex couples will advance feminist values within marriage. Part III discusses how marriage equality can be progressive and help those who are vulnerable in our society by providing numerous rights that are otherwise unavailable or expensive to replicate. While marriage equality cannot bring an end to the many problems caused by marriage’s privileged status in our society, it has the ability …

Convenient Synthesis Of 1,3-Dithiolane-2-Thiones: Cyclic Trithiocarbonates As Conformational Locks, Irina A. Dotsenko, Qinliang Zhao, Andreas H. Franz, Patrick Batoon, Nataliya M. Samoshina, Vyacheslav V. Samoshin

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

A series of novel 1,3-dithiolane-2-thiones, or cyclic trithiocarbonates, has been prepared by a new simple procedure: a treatment of the corresponding epoxides with the commercially available potassium ethyl xanthogenate, KSC(S)OEt. The stereochemistry of the products was determined by 1 H NMR and in some cases by single-crystal X-ray data. Cyclohexane-based 1,3- dithiolane-2-thiones revealed a trans-fusion of the carbo- and hetero-cycles. The products obtained from the mono-substituted cyclohexene oxides demonstrated an axial position of the substituents. Thus the epoxide transformation into trithiocarbonate can be used as a method for locking cyclic compounds in unstable conformations.

Distilling Americans: The Legacy Of Prohibition On U.S. Immigration Law, Jayesh Rathod Jan 2014

Distilling Americans: The Legacy Of Prohibition On U.S. Immigration Law, Jayesh Rathod

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Since the early twentieth century, federal immigration law has targeted noncitizens believed to engage in excessive alcohol consumption by prohibiting their entry or limiting their ability to obtain citizenship and other benefits. The first specific mention of alcohol-related behavior appeared in the Immigration Act of 1917, which called for the exclusion of "persons with chronic alcoholism" seeking to enter the United States. Several decades later, the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 specified that any noncitizen who "is or was ... a habitual drunkard" was per se lacking in good moral character, and hence ineligible for naturalization. Although the "chronic …

A Mega-Diverse Water Beetle Genus (Coleoptera: Hydraenidae: Hydraena Kugelann) Commonly Overlooked In Southeast Asia And Its Potential Use For Environmental Biomonitoring, Hendrik Freitag

Biology Faculty Publications

This study summarizes the current knowledge of the water beetle genus Hydraena Kugelann in Southeast Asia. The surprising species diversity and endemism rates in Hydraenopsis Janssens, the only subgenus present in Southeast Asia, are discussed. Data of five published Hydraena surveys from the Philippines and Singapore are used to evaluate species richness and the occurrence of species assemblages that are subject to the presence and quality of forests. Species richness was found to be generally higher in old grown forests. Some species appeared to be confined to near-natural forests. The denomination of indicator species is impeded by adequate sampling data, …

The research study included a qualitative phenomenology research approach. Data were collected from multiple sources: observations, semi-structured individual interviews and …

Ipads For Students With Asd: Comparing Delivery Modes For Visual Activity Schedules, Jillian Gourwitz Jan 2014

Ipads For Students With Asd: Comparing Delivery Modes For Visual Activity Schedules, Jillian Gourwitz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Visual Activity Schedules (VAS) are tools that present an abstract concept, such as time, in a more concrete and manageable form. VAS allow students to anticipate upcoming events and activities, develop an understanding of time, and facilitate the ability to predict change. Prior investigations have used VAS to increase on-task behavior while enhancing the student's ability to independently make transitions from one activity to another and are particularly appropriate as they capitalize on the visual strengths exhibited by many students with autism. Mobile devices such as the iPad are becoming a tool for teaching students with disabilities, and research is …

Evaluation Of The Three-Dimensional Patterns And Ecological Impacts Of The Invasive Old World Climbing Fern (Lygodium Microphyllum), Alexis Maldonado Jan 2014

Evaluation Of The Three-Dimensional Patterns And Ecological Impacts Of The Invasive Old World Climbing Fern (Lygodium Microphyllum), Alexis Maldonado

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Invasion by non-native species has had significant ecological and economic impacts on a global scale. In the state of Florida, Old World climbing fern (Lygodium microphyllum) is an invasive plant listed by FLEPPC as a category one invader with significant ecological impacts that threaten native plant diversity. This species relies on existing vegetative structures for support to climb into the forest canopy and forms dense mats that cover tree crowns. This subsequently affects the resources available to other species present. Quantifying the structural changes due to the presence of this species has proved logistically difficult, especially on a large spatial …

Strategic Deployments Of ‘Sisterhood’ And Questions Of Solidarity At A Women’S Development Project In Janakpur, Nepal, Coralynn V. Davis Jan 2014

Strategic Deployments Of ‘Sisterhood’ And Questions Of Solidarity At A Women’S Development Project In Janakpur, Nepal, Coralynn V. Davis

Faculty Journal Articles

Linguistic uses of ‘sisterhood’ provide a window into disparate understandings of relationality among virtual and actual interlocutors in women’s development across vectors of caste, class, ethnicity and nationality. In this essay, I examine the trope of ‘sisterhood’ as it was employed at a women’s development project in Janakpur, Nepal, in the 1990s. I demonstrate that the use of this common signifier of kinship with culturally disparate ‘signifieds’ created a confusion of meaning, and differential readings of the politics of relationality. In my view, ‘sister,’ as used at this project, was a multivalent, strategically deployed, and divergently interpreted term. In particular, …

Vicarious Villainy: A Critical Literary Analysis Of Sympathetic Villainy In American Musical Theatre, Mary Christopher Grogan Jan 2014

Vicarious Villainy: A Critical Literary Analysis Of Sympathetic Villainy In American Musical Theatre, Mary Christopher Grogan

Theses and Dissertations--Theatre and Dance

A disproportionate amount of research into musical theatre focuses on the positive and accessible nature of the books and librettos. Very little, if any, research into musical theatre explores its darker side, specifically the considerable amount of villainy (i.e., traditionally immoral and/or criminal behavior) practiced by some of its protagonists. Moreover, it is important to note that several of the most popular musicals contain villainous characters, and that many of these characters are highly popular and even sympathetic (i.e., understandable, pitiable, and deserving of compassion) to audiences. Therefore, this thesis explores sympathetic villainous personalities in popular American musicals, focusing on …

The Relationship Between Empathy And Attitudes Toward Government Intervention, M. Alex Wagaman, Elizabeth A. Segal Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Empathy And Attitudes Toward Government Intervention, M. Alex Wagaman, Elizabeth A. Segal

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Throughout history, government policy and programs have played integral roles in shaping social services. This article reports the findings of a study that explored the relationship between interpersonal empathy and attitudes toward government intervention among college students. Findings suggest that increased levels of empathy are associated with more positive attitudes toward government intervention. This relationship is even stronger for participants from marginalized identity groups. Nurturing empathy among those engaged in social welfare policy-making may support government efforts that are in the best interest of communities they are intended to help.

What’S Love Got To Do With It? Interest-Convergence As A Lens To View State Ratification Of Post Emancipation Slave Marriages, Danne L. Johnson

Western New England Law Review

This Article examines whether interest-convergence and/or critical legal theory more thoroughly explains post-emancipation state ratification of former Slave marriages. Section I discusses interest-convergence theory and critical legal theory. Section II discusses the disruption of the Civil War, Emancipation, and Reconstruction to the American South and its attempts to reestablish normalcy. Section III examines the contours of Pre-Civil War Marriage. Section IV discusses the competing interests of the Freedmen and whites, and the convergence of those interests resulting in post-emancipation state ratification of former Slave marriages.

The Dormant Commerce Clause—A Constitutional Barrier To Sustainable Agriculture And The Local Food Movement, Chris Erchull Jan 2014

The Dormant Commerce Clause—A Constitutional Barrier To Sustainable Agriculture And The Local Food Movement, Chris Erchull

Western New England Law Review

This Note examines one of the potential legal barriers to sustainable agriculture—the dormant Commerce Clause, the doctrine that the federal government’s power to regulate commerce prohibits the states from regulating in a way that interferes with interstate commerce. Part I of this Note discusses the goals of the sustainable agriculture movement and how they relate to federalism. It defines sustainable agriculture and shows how federal regulation and industrial agriculture are closely connected. It also discusses the relationship between small farms and sustainability. It then argues that many of the problems addressed by the sustainable agriculture movement fall within the police …

Family Law—The Rehabilitation Illusion: How Alimony Reform In Massachusetts Fails To Compensate For Caregiving, Julie-Anne G. Stebbins Jan 2014

Family Law—The Rehabilitation Illusion: How Alimony Reform In Massachusetts Fails To Compensate For Caregiving, Julie-Anne G. Stebbins

Western New England Law Review

When the Massachusetts Legislature unanimously passed the Alimony Reform Act of 2011, the bill was heralded as a “sweeping overhaul,” a long overdue change that would improve the predictability of divorce cases in the Commonwealth. This Note examines, from a feminist perspective, the failures of the Alimony Reform Act to fully consider and compensate women for unpaid contributions provided during the course of a marriage. It chronicles alimony’s long standing history in Massachusetts and details the changes the new statutes made, paying particular attention to the newly codified addition of rehabilitative alimony, which provides short term alimony to dependent spouses …

Keynote: Sustaining Society In The Anthropocene Epoch, Nicholas A. Robinson Jan 2014

Keynote: Sustaining Society In The Anthropocene Epoch, Nicholas A. Robinson

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This paper explores the argument that human transformation of Earth's systems is eclipsing the international law-making of nation states. Globally the processes of trade law or environmental law often progress transnationally, with little direction by national governments. Intergovernmental and non-governmental international organizations act with autonomy, apart from nations. To be clear, nation states still are the major players in world order, but trends of sustainable development or social networked communications transcend individual nations. Whether viewed as environmental law or sustainability law, this body of law exists at once globally and locally; it is different in kind from the Westphalia legacy …
