Eating Attitudes And Reasons For Exercise Among Physically Active College Female Students, Ann Weber
Eating Attitudes And Reasons For Exercise Among Physically Active College Female Students, Ann Weber
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Disordered eating attitudes and exercise behaviors are important factors when studying the continuum of eating disorders. An individual's attitude toward eating may influence other behaviors and thoughts toward health and exercise. A convenience sample study was used to examine the relationship between eating attitudes, reasons for exercise, and age among 190 physically active female college students ages 18 to 57. Participants completed the Disordered Eating Attitude Scale (DEAS) and Reasons for Exercise Inventory (REI). Level of exercise was self-reported by the participants and categorized as low, moderate, or high according to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Pearson's Correlation determined …
Food Elimination Based On Alcat Testing And The Effect On Overall Body Inflammation, Dawn Michelle Herbig
Food Elimination Based On Alcat Testing And The Effect On Overall Body Inflammation, Dawn Michelle Herbig
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Background: Growing evidence suggests that obesity is associated with systemic inflammation. The level of inflammation can be exacerbated by one or more existing food intolerances. Furthermore, studies have shown that diet quality, not quantity, plays an important role in potential inflammation caused by foods. It is therefore, important to determine if dietary patterns alone or in combination with increased adiposity have a greater effect on systemic inflammation and body composition.||Objective: Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of food elimination using the ALCAT food elimination protocol, on body composition and overall body inflammatory markers.||Methods: One hundred …

Effects Of Urbanization On Sediment Microbial Communities In Lotic Ecosystems, Bradley Drury
Effects Of Urbanization On Sediment Microbial Communities In Lotic Ecosystems, Bradley Drury
Master's Theses
The world is becoming increasingly urbanized, with the majority of the world's population now living in urban areas. Urbanization has the potential to significantly alter lotic ecosystems and the services they provide. Benthic microbial communities are key components of lotic ecosystems due to their contributions to primary production and nutrient cycling. Two types of human inputs associated with urbanization that may impact benthic microbial communities in lotic ecosystems are the input of wastewater treatment effluent and the input of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products. This work examines the effects of treated WWTP effluent on benthic microbial communities …

Symposium: The Legal And Ethical Implications Of Posthumous Reproduction, Trent Stechschulte
Journal of Law and Health
On March 22, 2013, the Journal of Law and Health of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law hosted a symposium entitled the “Legal and Ethical Implications of Posthumous Reproduction” in response to the United States Supreme Court case Astrue v Capato. In Astrue, Karen Capato used Robert Capato’s sperm to successfully conceive twins by in vitro fertilization eighteen months after Robert Capato’s death. Karen then applied for Social Security Survivorship Benefits on behalf of the twins, but to her dismay the Social Security Administration denied her application, prompting litigation on the twins’ behalf. The Supreme Court held that the posthumously conceived children …
The Case For Flexible Intellectual Property Protections In The Trans-Pacific Partnership , Matthew E. Silverman
The Case For Flexible Intellectual Property Protections In The Trans-Pacific Partnership , Matthew E. Silverman
Journal of Law and Health
The United States and eleven other countries are currently in the end stages of negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)—the largest free trade agreement (FTA) in U.S. history—which incorporates a range of trade topics, including the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPRs). Although the negotiations have been highly secretive, negotiating texts of the agreement leaked as recently as November 2013 have suggested that the United States is proposing IPR provisions, specifically relating to patent protection, that are stronger and less flexible than IPR provisions included within three of the four most recent U.S. FTAs. This paper addresses and analyzes …

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Adolescents (ages 10 to 19) and young adults (ages 20 to 24) make up 21% of the population of the United States. Therefore, the topic of adolescent health is an important focus in Healthy People 2020.5 The HP 2020 initiative describes adolescent health as a fairly broad topical area that encompasses smaller subjects such as teen smoking, pregnancy, and suicide. Due to its recent decline, teen pregnancy is often overlooked as an epidemic problem in the United States. According to the CDC, “…the sexual and reproductive health of America’s young persons remains an important public health concern: a substantial number …
An Investigation Into The Marketing, Advertising And Labelling Of Processed Food In Ireland And Its Influences On Consumer Choice And Subsequent Health Issues, Jane Healy
Theses
Ireland has experienced much economic and social change in recent years, and as a result of this, many new food choices and commodities are on offer to the consumer. The simple diet of fresh, unprocessed foods that existed in Ireland in the past has for many consumers been replaced by processed, convenience food products. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects which the marketing, advertising and labelling of processed food in Ireland has on consumers, and how these strategies influence their choice of food. The advertising claims and the labelling of these processed foods is of interest …

The KCNH2 gene encodes the Kv11.1 potassium channel that conducts the rapidly activating delayed rectifier current in the heart. KCNH2 pre-mRNA undergoes alternative processing; intron 9 splicing leads to the formation of a functional, full-length Kv11.1a isoform, while polyadenylationwithin intron 9 generates a non-functional, Cterminally truncated Kv11.1a-USO isoform. The relative expression of Kv11.1 isoforms plays an important role in the regulation of Kv11.1 channel function and the pathogenesis of long QT syndrome. In this study,we identified cis-acting elements that are required for KCNH2 intron 9 poly(A) signal activity. Mutation of these elements decreased Kv11.1a-USO expression and increased the expression of …

Antipredator Behavior In Desmognathus Ochrophaeus: Threat-Specific Responses To Chemical Stimuli In A Foraging Context, Elyse C. Johnson, Aaron M. Sullivan
Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science
Prey species may reduce the likelihood of injury or death by engaging in defensive behavior but often incur costs related to decreased foraging success or efficiency. To lessen these costs, prey may adjust the intensity or type of antipredator behavior according to the nature of the perceived threat. We evaluated the potential for threat-sensitive responses by Allegheny Mountain dusky salamanders (Desmognathus ochrophaeus) exposed to chemical stimuli associated with predation by asking three questions:(1) Do individual D. ochrophaeus respond to chemical cues in a threat-sensitive manner? (2) Do salamanders exhibit the same pattern of behavioral response while foraging? and (3) Is …

Prostate cancer is diagnosed in over 186,000 men in the United States and accounts for more than 28,000 deaths annually. Angiotensin II (AngII) is a major effector peptide of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), and is an important factor in hypertension. Correlations between ACE therapy and improved prostate cancer outcomes led to in vitro studies the action of AngII in cultured prostate cancer cell lines. Investigators have reported that exogenous application of Ang II to LNCaP cells results in the activation of Akt signaling, increased activity of SOD, and glutathione peroxidase. As the mitochondrion is a major contributor of total cellular …
The Effects Of Holistic Coping Strategies On Perceived Stress And Absenteeism In Hospital Nurses, Mary Alice Ayon
The Effects Of Holistic Coping Strategies On Perceived Stress And Absenteeism In Hospital Nurses, Mary Alice Ayon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The demanding work environments of professional nurses often contribute to high levels of stress that impact their professional practice and well-being. Although there is a significant amount of research regarding stress and absenteeism, a gap in the literature exists about the effects of holistic coping strategies on nurses' perceived stress and absenteeism. Based on the biopsychosocial model, the purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate effects of holistic coping strategies on perceived stress and absenteeism in 128 hospital nurses. An online cross-sectional survey design used the Perceived Stress Scale-10 to measure nurses' perceptions of stress. The independent grouping variable …
Adolescent And Community Adult Perceptions Of Adolescent Tobacco Use, Susan M. Franko
Adolescent And Community Adult Perceptions Of Adolescent Tobacco Use, Susan M. Franko
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 1964, the Surgeon General issued the first report that linked smoking cigarettes as a direct cause of emphysema, heart disease, and lung cancer. Despite this landmark publication, the primary cause of preventable deaths each year in the United States continues to be related to the use of tobacco. Regardless of decades of health education and resources available to inform society that the use of tobacco products can have deleterious effects on health, adolescents continue to experiment with them. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the influences of adolescent tobacco use. Based on the …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Dementia is a serious public health concern in the United States, with a prevalence of 5.2 million. There is currently no effective way to prevent or cure dementia, and the precise etiology is unknown, but it appears there are multiple risk factors. Prediabetes (PD) has been identified as a risk factor although the scientific evidence is conflicting. This study is important to those at high risk for dementia and to healthcare professionals who lack substantiated dementia prevention strategies. The purpose of this case control study was to determine whether PD is associated with dementia in adults aged 65-95 years and …

Grounded Labels From The Behavioral International Economic Development Growth Path Model On Economic Development Patterns From 2002-2012, Kenneth Thomas Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Economic models generally fail to adequately measure positive and negative growth paths in development through agrarian, industry, and service economies. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to design a new model that could accommodate both directions of growth and better measure development paths with particular attention to labors contributions. The theoretical foundation for this study was Walt Whitman Rostow's 5 economic stages of growth classifications. This Study attempted to find the most common economic growth path. While most development models use three to five classifications, this study used nine new classifications giving it a unique and specific look …

Novel Strategies For The Purification And Inhibition Of Protein-Tyrosine Kinases, Alexander Brown Iv
Open Access Dissertations
Protein-tyrosine kinases (PTKs) play essential roles in the cell signaling pathways of eukaryotes. However, since their discovery, PTKs have also been linked to cancer and it is now known that many of these enzymes actively promote oncogenic cell signal transduction in unregulated forms. Therefore, there has been a concerted effort on the part of researchers to identify the PTKs that potentiate such pathways, characterize their regulatory properties, and develop strategies to selectively disrupt these key elements of oncogenic signaling. Following this strategy, work described in this dissertation first focuses on the characterization of a relatively unstudied PTK, known as SRMS, …

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading cause of death in young adults and at least half of college students ages 18-24 have CHD risk factor. Unhealthy dietary choices made by college students contribute to the development of CHD risk factors. Eighty-percent of heart disease is preventable through diet and lifestyle and college students are ideal targets for prevention efforts since they are in the process of establishing lifestyle habits, which track forward into adulthood. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide evidence for the need to target this age group before disease progression occurs and to present the …

One of the most prominent biofuels today is ethanol. The production of ethanol from biomass, whether from sugar crops, starch crops, dairy products, or cellulosic materials, results in the production of a high-strength liquid waste called vinasse. Approximately 12 liters of vinasse are produced for every 1 liter of ethanol. Vinasse is high in solids and organic content, with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) ranging from 30 to 40 g/L, and a low pH, typically from 3-5. Traditionally, in countries such as India, Brazil, and other Latin American countries, vinasse has been disposed of by applying it as a fertilizer on …

This research work was aimed at finding novel approaches for early cancer detection. In cancer diagnosis, the candidate molecules largely include free DNA, related proteins and tumor cells, listed in increasing order of size. The list is also commonly accepted as early precursor of the disease where DNA and proteins are available in patients' blood earlier and the cell starts to appear in relatively later stage. The ratio of these molecules to the background matter is extremely small. To make detection more difficult, these molecules, once dislodged from their primary location, get cleared fast. These factors call for extremely sensitive …

Plants possess a highly sophisticated defense system to fight against pathogen infection. One of the components of this system, stomatal immunity, was studied here. Stomata, formed by a pair of epidermal guard cells, are tiny apertures on leaf surfaces that regulate exchange of gases and water loss in the plant. Apart from this function, stomata actively close in response to pathogens, thereby preventing entry of the pathogen in the plant. This constitutes stomatal immunity. However, in this study it was seen that stomatal immunity in Arabidopsis thaliana is suppressed when infection occurs in high relative humidity (RH). Now, opening and …

In sexually reproducing species, the decision to allocate resources towards male and female reproductive function is called sex allocation. Although theoretical and empirical work has been largely successful, the underlying mechanisms of sex allocation are not very well known. For instance, little is known about how the parents adjust the sex of the offspring in response to specific environmental conditions. According to Mendel's law of segregation, in species that have two genders, a cross between the male and the female should give an equal proportion of male and female progeny. However, there are some species that deviate from this genetic …

The bobcat (Lynx rufus) population in Big Bend National Park (BIBE) provides an excellent opportunity for study due to the varied arid habitat in which they exist, the dynamic nature of their environment, and the paucity of scientific documentation on this unexploited population. As an abundant carnivore, the bobcat is crucial to BIBE's community ecology and trophic structure, emphasizing the need to investigate, in depth food habits in relation to environmental factors. Bobcats feed on a variety of small vertebrates, primarily lagomorphs and rodents, and are also known to take down large prey, such as mule deer and white tailed …
