Sabbatical Leave Proposal & Report, Heidi Leuszler

Sabbaticals

I propose moving to Costa Rica for the entirety of Spring 2014 and possibly Summer 2014 semesters in order to accomplish the following goals:

  1. Learn to live more sustainably by moving outside of my country into one in which a culture of sustainability inherently exists.
  2. Investigate what obstacles impede, and what drives people toward more sustainable behaviors.
  3. Work or volunteer with a humanitarian organization focused on the social equity aspect of maintaining ecological balance.
  4. Challenge myself personally to do three things:

a. Learn to speak Spanish.
b. Work with impoverished peoples.
c. Live in a foreign country.

Subcloning And Expression Of Recombinant Human Parathyroid Hormone Rhpth By Fusion Strategy In E.Coli, Sadegh Majdi, Elahe Esfahani, Hossein Amani, Ghasem Najaf Pour D, Majid Shahbazi

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease that over time, bone mass, and therefore bones strength, is decreased, due to depletion of calcium and bone protein. So, bones become fragile and break easily. The unique ability of human parathyroid hormone (hPTH) as a bone anabolic agent, to increase bone density makes it a promising anabolic agent in the treatment of osteoporosis. Parathyroid hormone secreted by parathyroid chief cells is composed of 84 amino acids act as one of the major hormones maintaining calcium homeostasis. Anabolic agents directly stimulate bone formation and improve the microarchitecture of bone. Hence, they have the potential …

Botanists In The Canyonlands Of The Colorado Plateau – 1950–1983 & Prior, Stanley L. Welsh, Glen Moore

Books by Faculty of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of botanical investigations in southeastern Utah, but is not so-restricted geographically. It grew out of the discovery of decades-old manuscripts on the flora of what became Canyonlands National Park in 1964, but from those typescript copies the coverage grew outward geographically and backward in time to the earliest inhabitants of what is today known as the Four Corners Region of the American Southwest. Reviewed is the account of utilization of the region and its natural resources by aboriginal inhabitants who were familiar with all of it. That early, and to an extent, continuous occupation …

Governing The Ungovernable: Integrating The Multimodal Approach To Keeping Agricultural Land Use From Swallowing Ecosystems, Kalyani Robbins Jan 2014

Governing The Ungovernable: Integrating The Multimodal Approach To Keeping Agricultural Land Use From Swallowing Ecosystems, Kalyani Robbins

Faculty Publications

As the population grows, so does the conflict between demand for agricultural productivity and the need to maintain healthy ecosystems. Unfortunately, this concern alone does not motivate the agricultural industry to operate in a more environmentally friendly manner, nor is it an industry that has proven amenable to strict regulation. Indeed, any such effort must face one of the mightiest lobbies of all time. As it functions today, agriculture is unsustainable and at risk of wiping out more than its fair share of our already dwindling biodiversity. As demand increases, there is the potential for it to get worse than …

The Noaa Nrda Gulf Of Mexico Offshore Fish And Nekton Program: Rationale, Design And Sampling/Sensing Synopsis, Tracey Sutton, K. M. Boswell

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was not only unique for its material volume but also for its depth, ~1500 m, necessitating a wholewater- column approach for assessment. Given the absence of data regarding the pelagic fauna at these depths, a large-scale program was developed that included at-sea sampling/sensing, sample analysis, and database management. A four-cruise survey aboard the NOAA ship Pisces was conducted to provide data on the pelagic nekton from the surface to 1600 m, with emphasis between 800-1400 m (subsurface plume depth). Multi-frequency acoustic data were collected simultaneously to further characterize the horizontal and vertical distribution of pelagic …

Gastrointestinal Problems In Children With Autism, Developmental Delays Or Typical Development, Virginia Chaidez, Robin L. Hansen, Irva Hertz-Picciotto Jan 2014

Gastrointestinal Problems In Children With Autism, Developmental Delays Or Typical Development, Virginia Chaidez, Robin L. Hansen, Irva Hertz-Picciotto

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Abstract To compare gastrointestinal (GI) problems among children with: (1) autism spectrum disorder (ASD), (2) developmental delay (DD) and (3) typical development (TD), GI symptom frequencies were obtained for 960 children from the CHildhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) study. We also examined scores on five Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) subscales comparing ASD children with high versus low frequency GI symptoms. Compared to TD children, those with ASD [aOR 7.92 (4.89–12.85)] and DD [aOR 4.55 (2.51–8.24)] were more likely to have at least one frequent GI symptom. Restricting to ASD children, those with frequent abdominal pain, gaseousness, diarrhea, …

Substance Use And Drug Distribution At The Individual Level: A Grounded Theory Approach, Evan Thomas Stanforth Jan 2014

Substance Use And Drug Distribution At The Individual Level: A Grounded Theory Approach, Evan Thomas Stanforth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Substance use regularly occurs among individuals that distribute drugs and there is a limited amount of research that has examined both use and distribution. A grounded theory approach was used to develop a framework for analyzing relationships between use and distribution behaviors. 15 participants (five female, 10 male) that had experience selling drugs and using drugs were recruited from a residential substance abuse treatment center. Each participant was interviewed for one hour with an interview protocol aligning with the stage of analysis. A model was developed to explain Involvement and Integration in a Drug World with the codes Substance Use, …

Antennal Lobe Representations Are Optimized When Olfactory Stimuli Are Periodically Structured To Simulate Natural Wing Beat Effects, Benjamin Houot, Rex Burkland, Shreejoy Tripathy, Kevin C. Daly Jan 2014

Antennal Lobe Representations Are Optimized When Olfactory Stimuli Are Periodically Structured To Simulate Natural Wing Beat Effects, Benjamin Houot, Rex Burkland, Shreejoy Tripathy, Kevin C. Daly

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Animals use behaviors to actively sample the environment across a broad spectrum of sensory domains. These behaviors discretize the sensory experience into unique spatiotemporal moments, minimize sensory adaptation, and enhance perception. In olfaction, behaviors such as sniffing, antennal flicking, and wing beating all act to periodically expose olfactory epithelium. In mammals, it is thought that sniffing enhances neural representations; however, the effects of insect wing beating on representations remain unknown. To determine how well the antennal lobe (AL) produces odor dependent representations when wing beating effects are simulated, we used extracellular methods to record neural units and local field potentials …

Assessment Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury By Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Mary Lou Garey

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the knowledge about assessing mild traumatic brain injured patient by the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) as reflected in the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Acute Concussion Evaluation (ACE) Tool Kit. A descriptive cross-sectional survey research design was used to assess knowledge about the evidenced based assessment of APRNs practicing in an urgent care setting as established by the CDC for the evaluation of acute concussion. Specifically the history and physical assessment practices of the APRNs for the mild traumatic brain injured patient (MTBI) were evaluated in relationship to the CDC / …

A Socio-Marketing Analysis Of The Concept Of Cute And Its Consumer Culture Implications, Elad Granot, Thomas Brashear Alejandro, La Toya M. Russell Jan 2014

A Socio-Marketing Analysis Of The Concept Of Cute And Its Consumer Culture Implications, Elad Granot, Thomas Brashear Alejandro, La Toya M. Russell

Business Faculty Publications

Cute has become the favored language of (the predominantly female) popular consumer culture. This paper examines the roots of “cute” and its evolution with reference to its relevance to marketers. We follow the cultural appropriation of Japan’s “Kawaii” by the Western “cute”, and introduce a social, marketing-oriented description and analysis of the concept. We present its socio-cultural, experiential, symbolic, and ideological relevance to consumption in general, and to consumer culture theory in particular. This examination steers clear of scientific generalizations prevalent in consumer behavior research and aims, instead, to illuminate the cultural dimensions of the consumption cycle, and allow a …

Attachment Style And Psychological Sense Of Community In The Context Of 12-Step Recovery, Amy Elizabeth Ellis Jan 2014

Attachment Style And Psychological Sense Of Community In The Context Of 12-Step Recovery, Amy Elizabeth Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 10% of adults living in the United States meet criteria for a Substance Use Disorder. Although 12-step groups are considered evidence-based practices for substance use problems, an understanding of the underlying mechanisms by which they facilitate recovery practices remains in its infancy. The purpose of the current study was to explore whether attachment could be considered a possible mediator of the effects of recovery practices on positive psychosocial outcomes. Participants (N = 112) were self-identified NA members from 26 U.S. states who completed an online survey assessing attachment style, psychosocial sense of community, psychological well-being, and various other recovery …

In Vitro Comparison Of Force Decay Between Three Orthodontic Sliding Retraction Methods, Pamela Steiger Jan 2014

In Vitro Comparison Of Force Decay Between Three Orthodontic Sliding Retraction Methods, Pamela Steiger

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Objective: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine if there is a difference in force decay between three sliding retraction methods under a standardized force delivery system (200 gm at 25 mm stretch) at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Background: In order to achieve proper esthetics, occlusion and stability, orthodontic treatment may require extractions. Elastomeric chains, Nickel Titanium (NiTi) coils, and active ligatures are commonly used to close these extraction spaces. Methods: Twenty samples of each retraction method (elastomeric chains, NiTi Coils and active ligatures) were evaluated under standardized conditions (200 gm at 25 mm). The …

Influence Of Immediate Dentin Sealing On The Bond Strength Of Indirect Bonded Restorations, Alexander Duque Jan 2014

Influence Of Immediate Dentin Sealing On The Bond Strength Of Indirect Bonded Restorations, Alexander Duque

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: A critical issue and concern that has been documented in dentistry is the complexity of bonding to dentin, a fact that has been referred to as a less reliable technique due to the intrinsic characteristics of the dentin substrate. Effectiveness on dentin bonding is a clinical important approach for indirect bonded restorations in order to achieve a good adhesion that can surpass the test of time. Long-term clinical trials have shown that indirect bonded restorations have an increased risk of failure when using dentin as the major substrate. Consequently, an effort should be made to improve techniques and materials …
